šš¶ššµ : clover + reyan !
monthsĀ hadĀ passedĀ sinceĀ thatĀ firstĀ dreadfulĀ dayĀ atĀ theĀ hospital.Ā monthsĀ ofĀ earlyĀ mornings,Ā sharedĀ coffeeĀ runs,Ā dinnersĀ eatenĀ atĀ herĀ kitchenĀ table,Ā andĀ quietĀ visitsĀ spentĀ sittingĀ besideĀ herĀ father'sĀ hospitalĀ bedĀ together.Ā somewhereĀ alongĀ theĀ way,Ā theĀ linesĀ hadĀ blurred.Ā whatĀ hadĀ begunĀ asĀ gratitudeĀ hadĀ slowlyĀ becomeĀ comfort,Ā andĀ whatĀ hadĀ becomeĀ comfortĀ hadĀ somehowĀ transformedĀ intoĀ somethingĀ farĀ moreĀ dangerous.Ā cloverĀ hadĀ triedĀ notĀ toĀ examineĀ itĀ tooĀ closely.Ā sheĀ toldĀ herselfĀ itĀ wasĀ admiration.Ā respect.Ā fondness.Ā anythingĀ otherĀ thanĀ whatĀ itĀ actuallyĀ was.Ā becauseĀ acknowledgingĀ itĀ meantĀ acknowledgingĀ theĀ impossibleĀ realityĀ thatĀ sheĀ hadĀ developedĀ feelingsĀ forĀ herĀ father'sĀ bestĀ friend.Ā feelingsĀ forĀ theĀ manĀ whoĀ hadĀ patientlyĀ heldĀ herĀ togetherĀ duringĀ oneĀ ofĀ theĀ hardestĀ periodsĀ ofĀ herĀ life.
unfortunatelyĀ forĀ her,Ā alcoholĀ hadĀ neverĀ caredĀ muchĀ forĀ denial.
theĀ eveningĀ hadĀ startedĀ innocentlyĀ enough.Ā oneĀ ofĀ theĀ seniorĀ associatesĀ atĀ theĀ firmĀ hadĀ successfullyĀ closedĀ aĀ particularlyĀ difficultĀ case,Ā whichĀ naturallyĀ turnedĀ intoĀ aĀ celebrationĀ dinner,Ā whichĀ naturallyĀ turnedĀ intoĀ drinks,Ā whichĀ somehowĀ turnedĀ intoĀ many,Ā manyĀ drinks.Ā byĀ theĀ timeĀ theĀ barbecueĀ grillsĀ hadĀ goneĀ coldĀ andĀ theĀ serversĀ wereĀ politelyĀ tryingĀ toĀ encourageĀ patronsĀ toĀ headĀ home,Ā clover'sĀ cheeksĀ wereĀ warm,Ā herĀ laughterĀ cameĀ tooĀ easily,Ā andĀ herĀ abilityĀ toĀ filterĀ herĀ thoughtsĀ hadĀ completelyĀ abandonedĀ her.Ā itĀ onlyĀ tookĀ oneĀ coworkerĀ teasingĀ herĀ aboutĀ neverĀ datingĀ forĀ theĀ conversationĀ toĀ spiralĀ completelyĀ outĀ ofĀ control.Ā suddenlyĀ sheĀ wasĀ confessingĀ thingsĀ sheĀ hadĀ neverĀ admittedĀ aloudĀ before.Ā howĀ kindĀ heĀ was.Ā howĀ thoughtfulĀ heĀ was.Ā howĀ heĀ rememberedĀ theĀ smallestĀ detailsĀ aboutĀ people.Ā howĀ everyĀ mealĀ somehowĀ tastedĀ betterĀ whenĀ heĀ madeĀ it.Ā howĀ sheĀ lookedĀ forwardĀ toĀ seeingĀ hisĀ nameĀ appearĀ onĀ herĀ phoneĀ moreĀ thanĀ sheĀ probablyĀ should.Ā everyĀ sentenceĀ wasĀ metĀ withĀ increasinglyĀ dramaticĀ reactionsĀ fromĀ herĀ equallyĀ intoxicatedĀ coworkersĀ untilĀ theĀ entireĀ tableĀ hadĀ collectivelyĀ decidedĀ thatĀ sheĀ wasĀ hopelessly,Ā embarrassinglyĀ inĀ love.
theirĀ solutionĀ wasĀ immediateĀ and,Ā underĀ absolutelyĀ noĀ circumstances,Ā aĀ goodĀ idea.
somehow,Ā despiteĀ everyĀ rationalĀ thoughtĀ tryingĀ toĀ fightĀ throughĀ theĀ hazeĀ inĀ herĀ mind,Ā cloverĀ foundĀ herselfĀ beingĀ shepherdedĀ throughĀ theĀ lateĀ nightĀ streetsĀ byĀ aĀ smallĀ flockĀ ofĀ drunkenĀ lawyersĀ whoĀ hadĀ unanimouslyĀ appointedĀ themselvesĀ herĀ personalĀ relationshipĀ consultants.Ā theirĀ loudĀ encouragementĀ echoedĀ downĀ theĀ sidewalkĀ asĀ theyĀ stumbledĀ forwardĀ together,Ā armsĀ linkedĀ andĀ balanceĀ questionable.Ā somewhereĀ alongĀ theĀ journey,Ā cloverĀ hadĀ spottedĀ aĀ clusterĀ ofĀ redĀ tulipsĀ growingĀ nearĀ aĀ publicĀ flowerĀ bedĀ andĀ hadĀ becomeĀ absolutelyĀ convincedĀ thatĀ theyĀ wereĀ aĀ signĀ fromĀ theĀ universe.Ā afterĀ aĀ briefĀ andĀ entirelyĀ unsuccessfulĀ debateĀ withĀ aĀ streetlampĀ sheĀ hadĀ mistakenĀ forĀ aĀ person,Ā sheĀ proudlyĀ gatheredĀ aĀ smallĀ handfulĀ ofĀ themĀ andĀ carriedĀ themĀ carefullyĀ againstĀ herĀ chestĀ forĀ theĀ remainderĀ ofĀ theĀ walk.Ā byĀ theĀ timeĀ theyĀ reachedĀ theĀ familiarĀ house,Ā herĀ heartĀ wasĀ racingĀ forĀ reasonsĀ thatĀ hadĀ veryĀ littleĀ toĀ doĀ withĀ alcohol.
āĀ okay,Ā okay,Ā everyoneĀ beĀ quiet!!Ā āĀ cloverĀ whisperedĀ loudly,Ā whichĀ wasĀ notĀ aĀ whisperĀ atĀ all.Ā sheĀ smoothedĀ downĀ herĀ slightlyĀ disheveledĀ coat,Ā adjustedĀ herĀ gripĀ onĀ theĀ tulips,Ā andĀ staredĀ upĀ atĀ theĀ frontĀ doorĀ asĀ thoughĀ preparingĀ forĀ battle.Ā behindĀ her,Ā severalĀ coworkersĀ immediatelyĀ scatteredĀ intoĀ theĀ frontĀ yard,Ā crouchingĀ behindĀ bushesĀ andĀ decorativeĀ shrubsĀ withĀ allĀ theĀ subtletyĀ ofĀ aĀ marchingĀ band.Ā oneĀ nearlyĀ fellĀ over.Ā anotherĀ gaveĀ herĀ aĀ dramaticĀ thumbsĀ upĀ fromĀ behindĀ aĀ hedge.Ā cloverĀ noddedĀ seriouslyĀ inĀ returnĀ asĀ ifĀ receivingĀ instructionsĀ fromĀ aĀ militaryĀ commander.Ā then,Ā takingĀ oneĀ finalĀ breathĀ andĀ completelyĀ unawareĀ ofĀ howĀ brightĀ herĀ smileĀ hadĀ become,Ā sheĀ marchedĀ upĀ toĀ theĀ frontĀ porch,Ā raisedĀ herĀ hand,Ā andĀ excitedlyĀ knockedĀ onĀ reyan'sĀ frontĀ doorĀ withĀ theĀ tulipsĀ clutchedĀ tightlyĀ inĀ herĀ otherĀ hand.
It was an evening bake day. Baking had been one of those few aspects of the kitchen he still did not feel quite as confident in, though he tried here and there to build those skills up. Baking was a bit more technical than he liked as someone who liked to just throw things together. The precision in quantities was important or else everything would go wrong. But it had its perks and a nice fudgey brownie to start off the evening was never a bad one in his book. The recipe he was referencing was from a friend from culinary school who had gone on to be a pastry chef.
The brownies had been a mix of their own grandmother's recipe and something he needed to pass for class. As well as being a college kid and liking a certain type of brownie.
Reyan had been in the middle of sifting some flour when the sound of knocking had pulled him from his focus. White dust flew everywhere- though most landed on his apron thankfully.
"Ah-? Coming!" He called out, looking for a towel to wipe himself down quickly as he made his way over to the door. Was he expecting guests? He couldn't remember inviting anyone over.
Dusty apron and all he opened the door expecting- not Clover?
"Clover?" Reyan blinked, slightly startled at seeing her. It wasn't unpleasant to see her, just unexpected. He opened his mouth to say more when he noticed the tightly clutched flowers and blinked yet again. "Those are... daisies?"
lanceĀ didnātĀ evenĀ flinchĀ whenĀ theĀ satchelĀ hitĀ theĀ chair.Ā itĀ barelyĀ earnedĀ moreĀ thanĀ aĀ lazyĀ glanceĀ upĀ fromĀ hisĀ containerĀ ofĀ noodles,Ā forkĀ pausedĀ midĀ airĀ likeĀ heādĀ beenĀ expectingĀ theĀ impact.Ā honestly,Ā joshĀ collapsingĀ intoĀ theĀ seatĀ acrossĀ fromĀ himĀ likeĀ theĀ weightĀ ofĀ theĀ worldĀ hadĀ finallyĀ wonĀ wasĀ becomingĀ routine.Ā predictable,Ā even.Ā comforting,Ā inĀ aĀ way.Ā heĀ watchedĀ himĀ foldĀ inĀ onĀ himself,Ā fingersĀ buriedĀ inĀ hisĀ hairĀ withĀ thatĀ stupidĀ littleĀ clipĀ stillĀ hangingĀ onĀ forĀ dearĀ life,Ā andĀ foughtĀ theĀ instinctĀ toĀ smile.
heĀ hummedĀ thoughtfully,Ā eyesĀ trackingĀ joshĀ overĀ theĀ rimĀ ofĀ hisĀ glassesĀ asĀ theĀ groanĀ filteredĀ outĀ betweenĀ hisĀ palms.Ā āĀ youĀ know.Ā .Ā .Ā āĀ lanceĀ saidĀ mildly,Ā āĀ ifĀ beingĀ dramaticĀ burnedĀ calories,Ā youādĀ beĀ aĀ runwayĀ modelĀ byĀ now.Ā āĀ whenĀ joshĀ slammedĀ hisĀ handsĀ onĀ theĀ tableĀ andĀ glaredĀ atĀ him,Ā lanceĀ finallyĀ tookĀ aĀ bite,Ā unbothered,Ā chewingĀ slowly.Ā āĀ youāreĀ notĀ ugly.Ā āĀ heĀ addedĀ easily,Ā likeĀ itĀ wasnātĀ evenĀ worthĀ debating.Ā āĀ andĀ youĀ definitelyĀ donātĀ smell.Ā āĀ hisĀ gazeĀ flickedĀ brieflyĀ toĀ theĀ fistfulĀ ofĀ shirtĀ beforeĀ driftingĀ backĀ up.Ā āĀ ifĀ anything,Ā youĀ smellĀ likeĀ someoneĀ whoĀ ownsĀ tooĀ manyĀ sketchĀ pencilsĀ andĀ notĀ enoughĀ selfĀ esteem.Ā ā
heĀ swallowed,Ā setĀ theĀ forkĀ down,Ā andĀ leanedĀ backĀ inĀ hisĀ chair.Ā oneĀ armĀ drapedĀ overĀ theĀ back,Ā postureĀ looseĀ inĀ thatĀ infuriatinglyĀ composedĀ wayĀ thatĀ madeĀ peopleĀ lingerĀ aĀ littleĀ tooĀ longĀ aroundĀ him.Ā āĀ thirdĀ blindĀ date,Ā hm?Ā āĀ lanceĀ repeated,Ā browsĀ liftingĀ asĀ ifĀ surprised.Ā āĀ wow.Ā thatāsāĀ rough.Ā āĀ hisĀ eyesĀ slidĀ overĀ joshĀ deliberatelyĀ now,Ā slowĀ andĀ assessing.Ā āĀ areĀ youĀ sureĀ theyĀ didnātĀ justĀ getĀ intimidated?Ā quiet.Ā artsy.Ā bigĀ sadĀ eyes.Ā someĀ peopleĀ donātĀ knowĀ whatĀ toĀ doĀ withĀ that.Ā ā
lanceĀ leanedĀ forwardĀ again,Ā loweringĀ hisĀ voiceĀ likeĀ heĀ wasĀ lettingĀ joshĀ inĀ onĀ aĀ secret.Ā āĀ honestly?Ā soundsĀ likeĀ youĀ dodgedĀ aĀ bullet.Ā anyoneĀ whoādĀ ghostĀ youĀ afterĀ twoĀ weeksĀ ofĀ planningĀ isnātĀ worthĀ yourĀ time.Ā āĀ hisĀ gazeĀ softenedĀ then,Ā lingeringĀ onĀ theĀ creaseĀ betweenĀ joshāsĀ brows.Ā āĀ besides,Ā youāreĀ runningĀ outĀ ofĀ badĀ dates,Ā right?Ā statisticallyĀ speaking.Ā āĀ aĀ faintĀ smirkĀ tuggedĀ atĀ hisĀ lips.Ā āĀ eventually,Ā youāllĀ endĀ upĀ exactlyĀ whereĀ youāreĀ supposedĀ to.Ā ā
āI have plenty of self esteem,ā he retorted, the beginnings of a pout on his lips. Leaning against hand on the table, he idly stared at the food in front of him. He wasnāt particularly hungry, but the last instance of when he actually sat down to have a meal was escaping him. The young man let out a quiet sigh as he responded to the otherās inquiries, āi donāt own enough pencils thank you very much.āĀ
āI canāt see why they would get intimidated. Our mutual friends were the ones who tried to set us up, we talked back and forth a bit and things seemed okay.ā thinking back on their interactions, nothing particularly stood out to him. They had texted each other here and there to get a vibe of one another before settling on trying out a single date to see if it would go anywhere. They had even called each other for a few hours to get an idea of preferences. Nothing so over the top, but it was not as if josh wanted to be tossed into some rave as a first date- so out of his element.Ā
His fingers tapped the table lightly, his nails painted a light sky blue this month. He had the nasty habit of biting his nails growing up, so he had resorted to painting them to deter it. It had been years since then, so it was hardly a worry of picking it up again, but one could never be too careful. Josh turned his attention to lance. The other looking as if he were the very definition of āiām too cool to have problems like that.ā a stark difference from how josh presented himself.
Whereas lance was all confidence and charm with movement that screamed of ease and certainty. He hardly ever appeared thrown off or having a terrible hair day. Josh walked around with tense shoulders, often trying to make himself smaller to the wandering eye. Though his movements were coordinated, they were often jilted- laced with niblets of generalized anxiety and shyness that he had carried throughout his life. Lance could smile and the sun would shine brighter, josh often hid his smiles behind oversized sleeves.Ā
Even today with his half finished noodles, lance looked like something out of a vogue magazine.
part of him was infuriated at the decorum, the other was soothed knowing that while that was the image of lance many had witnessed. His own cherished memories involved the other sobbing over sad puppy movies. Fair, but you know. Equality somehow, someway he supposed.
āIf i get through enough bad dates, i have to eventually find the good ones-ā he mumbled, thinking over the otherās words. āActually you know what, you have a point! I just have to sort out all the bad eggs from the good ones. This isnāt a curse, but a blessing!ā the smile that burst from his face could put the sun to shame. It lightened whatever gloominess the other had, and added a bit of pep into his spirit that wasnāt there before. āI just have to go on enough bad dates to find a really good one.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā dowonĀ couldnātĀ helpĀ butĀ laughĀ again,Ā softerĀ thisĀ time,Ā theĀ kindĀ ofĀ laughĀ thatĀ carriedĀ warmthĀ ratherĀ thanĀ amusement.Ā āĀ onlyĀ forty?Ā āĀ heĀ echoed,Ā hisĀ smileĀ tuggingĀ widerĀ asĀ heĀ restedĀ hisĀ chinĀ inĀ hisĀ palm,Ā elbowĀ proppedĀ lazilyĀ onĀ theĀ table.Ā āĀ youĀ reallyĀ donātĀ holdĀ back,Ā doĀ you?Ā atĀ thisĀ rate,Ā grannyĀ andĀ iĀ mightĀ endĀ upĀ fightingĀ forĀ yourĀ approvalĀ insteadĀ ofĀ eachĀ otherāsĀ company.Ā āĀ hisĀ toneĀ wasĀ light,Ā butĀ thereĀ wasĀ somethingĀ tenderĀ hiddenĀ beneathĀ it.Ā heĀ likedĀ seeingĀ herĀ likeĀ this.Ā unguarded.Ā teasing.Ā aliveĀ inĀ aĀ wayĀ heĀ hadnātĀ seenĀ before.
herĀ attemptĀ atĀ humorĀ wasnātĀ perfect.Ā herĀ timingĀ wasĀ aĀ bitĀ stilted,Ā herĀ deliveryĀ aĀ littleĀ tooĀ straightforwardā¦Ā butĀ thatĀ wasĀ exactlyĀ whatĀ madeĀ itĀ endearing.Ā sheĀ wasnātĀ performing,Ā sheĀ wasnātĀ tryingĀ toĀ charmĀ him;Ā sheĀ wasĀ simplyĀ beingĀ herself,Ā andĀ thatĀ wasĀ somethingĀ dowonĀ didnātĀ takeĀ lightly.Ā heĀ watchedĀ herĀ inĀ theĀ dimĀ lightĀ ofĀ theĀ shop,Ā flourĀ dustĀ clingingĀ toĀ herĀ apronĀ andĀ strandsĀ ofĀ hairĀ fallingĀ looseĀ nearĀ herĀ face,Ā andĀ heĀ thoughtĀ sheĀ lookedĀ moreĀ humanĀ thanĀ sheĀ everĀ hadĀ before.Ā āĀ iĀ guessĀ thatĀ makesĀ meĀ theĀ luckyĀ oneĀ then.Ā āĀ heĀ said,Ā voiceĀ gentlerĀ now.Ā āĀ gettingĀ toĀ seeĀ thisĀ sideĀ ofĀ you.Ā iĀ didnātĀ thinkĀ iādĀ everĀ getĀ moreĀ thanĀ yourĀ suspiciousĀ staresĀ andĀ dryĀ oneĀ liners.Ā ā
heĀ leanedĀ backĀ inĀ hisĀ seat,Ā fingersĀ idlyĀ tracingĀ theĀ rimĀ ofĀ theĀ cookieĀ plateĀ sheādĀ leftĀ him,Ā aĀ softĀ humĀ escapingĀ hisĀ throat.Ā āĀ iāllĀ makeĀ sureĀ toĀ bringĀ aĀ biggerĀ allowanceĀ nextĀ time,Ā justĀ soĀ iĀ canĀ makeĀ upĀ forĀ allĀ thoseĀ missedĀ birthdays.Ā maybeĀ evenĀ throwĀ inĀ aĀ bonusĀ ifĀ youĀ keepĀ smilingĀ likeĀ that.Ā āĀ heĀ added,Ā glancingĀ atĀ herĀ fromĀ beneathĀ hisĀ lashes.Ā theĀ jokeĀ wasĀ there,Ā playfulĀ andĀ easy,Ā butĀ itĀ wasĀ shadowedĀ byĀ somethingĀ genuine.Ā anĀ undercurrentĀ ofĀ admirationĀ thatĀ heĀ didnātĀ botherĀ toĀ hide.
forĀ aĀ briefĀ moment,Ā heĀ fellĀ quiet,Ā hisĀ usualĀ teasingĀ replacedĀ byĀ somethingĀ moreĀ contemplative.Ā āĀ yourĀ grandmotherāsĀ aĀ remarkableĀ woman.Ā āĀ heĀ saidĀ finally.Ā āĀ iĀ canĀ seeĀ whereĀ youĀ getĀ itĀ from.Ā youāveĀ bothĀ gotĀ thatĀ sameĀ strengthĀ aboutĀ youāĀ differentĀ kinds,Ā butĀ theĀ sameĀ heart.Ā āĀ hisĀ gazeĀ lingeredĀ onĀ herĀ aĀ littleĀ longerĀ beforeĀ heĀ pushedĀ himselfĀ upĀ fromĀ theĀ chair,Ā handsĀ slidingĀ intoĀ hisĀ pockets.Ā āĀ iāmĀ gladĀ youāreĀ gettingĀ usedĀ toĀ seeingĀ meĀ around,Ā carmine.Ā because,Ā forĀ whatĀ itāsĀ worthā¦Ā iĀ thinkĀ iāmĀ gettingĀ usedĀ toĀ beingĀ hereĀ too.Ā ā
āGranny said you were good practice for learning how to do quips. Canāt be her granddaughter without learning how to have the last word in.ā Carmine added after a moment's hesitation. She did not need to explain herself to him, but⦠she was trying to be honest. And if honesty let her have the last word as her grandmother wanted, then she was fine with that. On a more selfish note, she just did not want dowon to have any more wins against her.Ā
Not that anyone else was really keeping track. Her granny likely didnāt care, and dowon seemed to be fine with whatever losses she handed him. But Carmine was, and that mattered to her.Ā
It may have been a one-sided competition, but it was a competition where for once the stakes didnāt feel so dire.Ā
Her eyes drifted away from him, her lips pursed in thought as she rotated his statement in her head. Dowon still felt⦠uncertain in many ways. A lot of uncertainty and unfamiliarity, but with each passing encounter he started to become something- someone- more and more recognizable. Before anything else, he was starting to become something consistent in her life. And consistency had always been a luxury more than a certainty. Lithe, thin fingers fiddled with the knot at her apron before she turned to face him fully.Ā
Carmine Shroud was no coward. Much less in the face of someone like Dowon.Ā
āI⦠donāt know yet if I can call you a friend right now.ā She spoke clearly, her tone even, āButā¦. it would be nice if one day I could. I suppose.ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā atlasĀ didnātĀ answerĀ rightĀ away.Ā herĀ wordsĀ landedĀ inĀ theĀ quietĀ placesĀ betweenĀ them,Ā theĀ kindĀ ofĀ truthĀ thatĀ didnātĀ demandĀ anĀ argumentĀ butĀ insteadĀ satĀ heavyĀ inĀ theĀ chest.Ā heĀ watchedĀ herĀ asĀ theyĀ walked.Ā theĀ wayĀ herĀ shouldersĀ softenedĀ asĀ sheĀ spoke,Ā theĀ wayĀ herĀ voice,Ā thoughĀ gentle,Ā carriedĀ conviction.Ā ellanaĀ hadĀ thatĀ effectĀ onĀ him.Ā sheĀ couldĀ sayĀ theĀ simplestĀ thingsĀ andĀ somehowĀ makeĀ himĀ feelĀ seen,Ā evenĀ whenĀ heĀ wasnātĀ sureĀ heĀ deservedĀ it.
heĀ exhaledĀ slowly,Ā aĀ softĀ cloudĀ ofĀ breathĀ escapingĀ intoĀ theĀ coolĀ air.Ā āĀ iĀ knowā¦Ā āĀ heĀ murmured,Ā hisĀ toneĀ quieterĀ thanĀ before,Ā roughĀ aroundĀ theĀ edges.Ā āĀ itāsĀ notĀ aboutĀ thinkingĀ youĀ canātĀ handleĀ it.Ā iĀ justāĀ āĀ heĀ paused,Ā hisĀ browsĀ knittingĀ asĀ heĀ searchedĀ forĀ theĀ rightĀ words.Ā āĀ iĀ spendĀ allĀ dayĀ tryingĀ toĀ keepĀ control.Ā onĀ theĀ court,Ā itāsĀ allĀ aboutĀ discipline.Ā oneĀ mistakeĀ andĀ youĀ loseĀ theĀ game.Ā oneĀ wrongĀ moveĀ andĀ theĀ coachĀ isĀ onĀ you.Ā andĀ whenĀ iĀ comeĀ homeĀ toĀ you,Ā iĀ donātĀ wantĀ toĀ bringĀ thatĀ sameĀ chaosĀ here.Ā iĀ donātĀ wantĀ to...Ā turnĀ thisĀ intoĀ anotherĀ placeĀ whereĀ iĀ haveĀ toĀ fixĀ things.Ā ā
heĀ glancedĀ downĀ atĀ herĀ handĀ stillĀ tuckedĀ intoĀ hisĀ pocket,Ā hisĀ thumbĀ brushingĀ softlyĀ againstĀ herĀ fingers,Ā groundingĀ himself.Ā āĀ butĀ maybeĀ youāreĀ right.Ā āĀ heĀ addedĀ afterĀ aĀ beat,Ā theĀ hintĀ ofĀ aĀ smallĀ smileĀ ghostingĀ overĀ hisĀ lips.Ā āĀ maybeĀ iāveĀ beenĀ tryingĀ tooĀ hardĀ toĀ makeĀ everythingĀ perfect.Ā paintingĀ walls,Ā buyingĀ knives,Ā bookingĀ massages.Ā iĀ justĀ wantedĀ toĀ giveĀ youĀ somethingĀ easy,Ā somethingĀ good.Ā iĀ didnātĀ wantĀ youĀ toĀ everĀ feelĀ likeĀ beingĀ withĀ meĀ cameĀ withĀ tooĀ muchĀ weight.Ā āĀ thereĀ wasĀ anĀ edgeĀ ofĀ vulnerabilityĀ inĀ hisĀ voiceĀ now,Ā somethingĀ rawĀ thatĀ heĀ didnātĀ oftenĀ show.Ā āĀ youāreĀ rightĀ though.Ā thatāsĀ notĀ whatĀ weĀ promised.Ā andĀ iĀ guess...Ā maybeĀ iĀ forgetĀ sometimesĀ thatĀ youĀ meantĀ thatĀ vowĀ asĀ muchĀ asĀ iĀ did.Ā ā
asĀ theyĀ reachedĀ theĀ corner,Ā theĀ goldenĀ lightsĀ ofĀ theĀ restaurantĀ spillingĀ faintlyĀ ontoĀ theĀ pavement,Ā atlasĀ slowedĀ hisĀ steps,Ā lettingĀ hisĀ shoulderĀ brushĀ againstĀ hers.Ā āĀ iāllĀ talkĀ toĀ them.Ā āĀ heĀ saidĀ softly,Ā sincerityĀ threadingĀ throughĀ everyĀ word.Ā āĀ toĀ coach,Ā toĀ theĀ team.Ā iĀ knowĀ theyāreĀ feelingĀ itĀ too.Ā itāsĀ beenĀ harderĀ thisĀ seasonĀ thanĀ most.Ā butĀ iāllĀ doĀ it.Ā notĀ justĀ forĀ me,Ā butĀ forĀ us.Ā youāreĀ right,Ā iĀ canātĀ keepĀ everythingĀ bottledĀ upĀ andĀ pretendĀ itāsĀ fine.Ā ā
heĀ turnedĀ toĀ faceĀ herĀ then,Ā theĀ lamplightĀ catchingĀ theĀ warmthĀ inĀ hisĀ eyes.Ā āĀ thankĀ you,Ā myĀ love.Ā āĀ heĀ saidĀ simply,Ā hisĀ voiceĀ quietĀ butĀ steady.Ā āĀ forĀ remindingĀ meĀ thatĀ thisĀ isnātĀ justĀ mineĀ toĀ carry.Ā thatĀ iĀ donātĀ haveĀ toĀ protectĀ youĀ fromĀ theĀ partsĀ ofĀ meĀ thatĀ arenātĀ calmĀ orĀ collected.Ā iĀ knowĀ iĀ donātĀ alwaysĀ sayĀ itĀ right,Ā butĀ youāreĀ whatĀ keepsĀ meĀ grounded.Ā evenĀ whenĀ iĀ donātĀ deserveĀ it.Ā āĀ hisĀ handĀ tightenedĀ gentlyĀ aroundĀ hers,Ā hisĀ thumbĀ tracingĀ slowĀ circlesĀ overĀ herĀ skinĀ asĀ ifĀ memorizingĀ theĀ shapeĀ ofĀ herĀ reassurance.Ā āĀ iāllĀ tryĀ toĀ letĀ youĀ inĀ more.Ā iĀ promise.Ā ā
her thumb brushed over the back of his hand as they took forward steps together. he was the faster one of the two. always moving forward, always looking to the finish line and what to anticipate next. there was a certain impulsiveness in atlas that always caught ellana off guard- the kind of impatience that wouldn't wait for life, because what if they missed something too soon. she'd always taken her time with things- all she had was time. her steps while not cautious, carried a certain level of certainty. whatever would happen would find them, there wasn't any need to rush.
to her, maybe this situation was her seeing the finish line and atlas already looking for the next race.
"do you remember the first time i yelled at you? properly yelled at you?" she asked softly.
ellana was never one to raise her voice, even in her excitement she tended to make herself more quiet. a silent type of happiness that was felt more than heard. it took a while to get her worked up, much less to the point of actually yelling. but atlas, ever the exception, had managed it.
"you got injured during one of your seasons and you chose not to tell anyone for weeks and we found out about it after you had collapsed during one of your final games," she recalled. thankfully the injury had not ruined his chances at being scouted, though he was benched afterwards to allow him time to heal. but she recalled marching up to him right on the court and screaming at him through her concern and frustration. atlas never liked others, herself included, seeing the sides of himself that he couldn't handle.
the memory forced a smile out of her, "people thought i was your psycho girlfriend for a while because i was angry and 'who would yell at their injured boyfriend right in public.' but my gosh, you made me so mad that evening, because you spent weeks telling me you were okay. you never let me share some of the weight you carry. i admire your want to be reliable to others, but sometimes i wish you'd afford yourself the same kindness."
the young woman gave him a side eye, squeezing his hand, "please let me in sometimes, atlas."
"table for one" ; - @dystincts
the satchel landed onto the chair with a resounding thud. josh paid it no mind as he practically threw himself in it. gathering his head up into his hands, he spent a moment or two just groaning defeat into his palms. it wasn't the oddest thing for anyone to see. as of late, it has become more and more of a happenstance.
slamming his palms down onto the table, the young man gave the stink eye to the other seated across from him. was the other in the middle of their lunch? yes. did josh care? not really. besides, they still had another 45 minutes to their break, they could spend five just listening to him complain if they really cared.
"i have to be ugly, i just have to be." he spoke, confusion lacing his town. "that or i'm smelly?" grabbing a fistful of his shirt, he took a whiff and shook his head. he just did laundry yesterday and switched out the detergent it could not have been that. was it the scent of graphite that seemed to stick with him? he was an artist, it couldn't be helped.
"tell me why my third blind date this month is a no show! we spent the last two weeks sorting out the details, and suddenly they're a no show last night." josh did not consider himself the worst partner by miles, but something had to be wrong if his dating history was something to go off of.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā cloverĀ blinkedĀ atĀ hisĀ laughter,Ā aĀ flickerĀ ofĀ surpriseĀ crossingĀ herĀ featuresĀ beforeĀ itĀ softenedĀ intoĀ somethingĀ fonder,Ā almostĀ nostalgic.Ā āĀ itāsĀ hardĀ toĀ imagineĀ youĀ beingĀ moody~Ā āĀ sheĀ teasedĀ lightly,Ā restingĀ herĀ elbowĀ againstĀ theĀ tableĀ andĀ proppingĀ herĀ chinĀ onĀ herĀ palm.Ā theĀ faintĀ steamĀ fromĀ herĀ curryĀ curledĀ upĀ betweenĀ them,Ā carryingĀ theĀ warmthĀ ofĀ turmericĀ andĀ chili.Ā āĀ youĀ seemĀ tooĀ calmĀ forĀ thatĀ now.Ā thoughā¦Ā iĀ guessĀ peopleĀ donātĀ reallyĀ growĀ outĀ ofĀ thingsĀ likeĀ thatĀ unlessĀ theyāreĀ forcedĀ to.Ā āĀ herĀ eyesĀ flickeredĀ toĀ hisĀ handsĀ asĀ heĀ spoke.Ā steady,Ā deliberateĀ hands,Ā onesĀ thatĀ hadĀ clearlyĀ learnedĀ howĀ toĀ buildĀ andĀ create,Ā notĀ destroy.Ā theĀ wayĀ heĀ spokeĀ aboutĀ hisĀ pastĀ wasĀ easy,Ā unguardedĀ inĀ aĀ wayĀ thatĀ madeĀ herĀ chestĀ acheĀ aĀ little.Ā thereĀ wasĀ somethingĀ groundingĀ aboutĀ it.Ā likeĀ heĀ hadĀ learnedĀ theĀ artĀ ofĀ movingĀ forwardĀ evenĀ whenĀ theĀ worldĀ hadnātĀ madeĀ itĀ easyĀ forĀ him.
sheĀ letĀ outĀ aĀ quietĀ laughĀ atĀ hisĀ recountingĀ ofĀ herĀ father,Ā shakingĀ herĀ headĀ slowly.Ā āĀ no,Ā heĀ convenientlyĀ leftĀ thatĀ storyĀ out.Ā āĀ sheĀ said,Ā thoughĀ herĀ lipsĀ curvedĀ despiteĀ herself.Ā theĀ thoughtĀ ofĀ casimirĀ standingĀ inĀ theĀ kitchen,Ā lookingĀ proudĀ andĀ baffledĀ inĀ equalĀ measureĀ asĀ riceĀ burnedĀ inĀ theĀ microwave,Ā broughtĀ anĀ unexpectedĀ stingĀ toĀ herĀ eyes.Ā āĀ thatĀ soundsĀ exactlyĀ likeĀ him,Ā though.Ā heĀ usedĀ toĀ thinkĀ heĀ couldĀ fixĀ anythingĀ ifĀ heĀ justĀ triedĀ hardĀ enough.Ā āĀ herĀ forkĀ pausedĀ overĀ herĀ foodĀ asĀ herĀ voiceĀ softened.Ā āĀ heĀ usedĀ toĀ sayĀ thatĀ aboutĀ me,Ā too.Ā thatĀ ifĀ iĀ justĀ keptĀ going,Ā iĀ couldĀ makeĀ anythingĀ rightĀ again.Ā āĀ sheĀ blinkedĀ aĀ fewĀ times,Ā tryingĀ toĀ forceĀ theĀ emotionĀ downĀ beforeĀ itĀ showed,Ā focusingĀ insteadĀ onĀ herĀ plate.Ā āĀ iāmā¦Ā gladĀ youāreĀ here,Ā reyan.Ā really.Ā youāveĀ beenĀ goodĀ forĀ bothĀ ofĀ us.Ā ā
whenĀ heĀ askedĀ aboutĀ herĀ work,Ā sheĀ straightenedĀ aĀ little,Ā gratefulĀ forĀ theĀ shiftĀ inĀ topic.Ā āĀ ohāĀ yeah,Ā no,Ā thatāsĀ fine!Ā iĀ justĀ canātĀ shareĀ anyĀ namesĀ or,Ā youĀ know,Ā detailsĀ thatĀ wouldĀ violateĀ confidentiality.Ā butā¦Ā thereĀ wasĀ oneĀ caseĀ thatĀ stuckĀ withĀ me.Ā āĀ sheĀ toyedĀ absentlyĀ withĀ herĀ spoon,Ā theĀ softĀ scrapeĀ ofĀ metalĀ againstĀ porcelainĀ fillingĀ theĀ quiet.Ā āĀ itĀ wasĀ aĀ custodyĀ case,Ā actually.Ā theĀ motherĀ wasĀ workingĀ twoĀ jobs,Ā barelyĀ scrapingĀ by,Ā andĀ theĀ fatherāsĀ familyĀ hadĀ money.Ā enoughĀ toĀ makeĀ everyoneĀ believeĀ heādĀ beĀ theĀ betterĀ parentĀ justĀ byĀ existingĀ inĀ aĀ biggerĀ house.Ā itĀ wasnātĀ easyĀ convincingĀ theĀ judgeĀ otherwise,Ā butĀ weĀ did.Ā sheĀ won!Ā āĀ aĀ faintĀ smileĀ tuggedĀ atĀ herĀ lips,Ā proudĀ butĀ tempered.Ā āĀ iĀ thinkĀ thatĀ wasĀ theĀ firstĀ timeĀ iĀ feltĀ likeĀ iĀ wasĀ doingĀ somethingĀ thatĀ actuallyĀ mattered.Ā ā
sheĀ lookedĀ upĀ then,Ā meetingĀ hisĀ gazeĀ fullyĀ forĀ theĀ firstĀ timeĀ sinceĀ heādĀ startedĀ talkingĀ aboutĀ herĀ dad.Ā thereĀ wasĀ somethingĀ steadyĀ aboutĀ theĀ wayĀ heĀ listened,Ā theĀ wayĀ heĀ madeĀ spaceĀ forĀ silenceĀ toĀ sitĀ withoutĀ itĀ feelingĀ heavy.Ā āĀ honestly,Ā itāsĀ exhaustingĀ mostĀ ofĀ theĀ time.Ā āĀ sheĀ admitted,Ā voiceĀ quieterĀ now,Ā āĀ butĀ momentsĀ likeĀ thatā¦Ā theyĀ makeĀ allĀ theĀ lateĀ nightsĀ worthĀ it.Ā āĀ sheĀ gaveĀ aĀ smallĀ shrug,Ā thenĀ addedĀ withĀ aĀ faintĀ smile,Ā āĀ kindĀ ofĀ likeĀ howĀ iĀ imagineĀ cookingĀ feelsĀ forĀ you.Ā longĀ hours,Ā aĀ lotĀ ofĀ mess,Ā butĀ worthĀ itĀ whenĀ itāsĀ doneĀ right.Ā āĀ sheĀ spearedĀ anotherĀ biteĀ ofĀ curry,Ā savoringĀ theĀ warmthĀ beforeĀ noddingĀ slightly.Ā āĀ andĀ forĀ theĀ record,Ā thisĀ oneāsĀ definitelyĀ doneĀ right.Ā ā
"i was..." reyan trailed off for a moment, thinking about himself in his youth. all the confidence with no life experience to back it up. the arrogance of youth that thought they knew it all. it all caught up to him quicker than he thought, but if he tried to think on it deeper- it was harder to imagine learning the lessons he did at a later age. "i got into trouble a lot. barely got into college and made it through my first year somehow. i didn't party, but i did get into fights a lot. you should've seen how stressed my mom was. she was constantly on me to fix my attitude and everything."
he often attributed to her greying as early as she did, because of how much he really valued his freedom. "i was something to be as brave as i was infront of her," he told clover with a genuine laugh on his lips. his mom scared him more nowadays, but that was a good thing she would say. his life experiences weren't unique by any standards, but still those were his and there was something worth it there. reyan never considered himself very wise, though he tried to be, but if someone found anything learned in his stories he would consider it a win.
casimir had always been more of the idealist between the two. it was something he greatly envied and respected in the other. reyan wasn't much of a risk taker nowadays, but the other took enough risks for both of them it probably evened out. "visionary is the word i'd use, though sometimes he reached for too high of stars in the kitchen." his chest warmed at the thought of being something meaningful to the two. it was silly and undeserving in some aspects, but it was nice to know he offered something to others. "well, thanks for putting up with all my silliness so far. i'm great with my hands, and i've been known to say an awful dad joke or two."
"you remind me of a knight." reyan told her, genuinely. his tone was soft, and a bit in awe. though his gaze held nothing, but warmth for her. "in my head, lawyers are the ones who make the rules and here you are defending people who really need it. a real life super hero if you will. you know the laws well enough to use them to help others and you genuinely want to help. it's not about the money for you.... i like that."
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā dowonĀ blinkedĀ atĀ herĀ quip,Ā caughtĀ offĀ guardĀ forĀ justĀ aĀ momentĀ beforeĀ aĀ laughĀ brokeĀ freeĀ fromĀ him.Ā low,Ā warm,Ā andĀ unrestrained.Ā heĀ hadnātĀ expectedĀ herĀ toĀ biteĀ back,Ā letĀ aloneĀ withĀ somethingĀ soĀ bold,Ā butĀ theĀ wayĀ sheĀ deliveredĀ itĀ withĀ thatĀ mock-innocenceĀ hadĀ himĀ shakingĀ hisĀ head.Ā āĀ grandfather?Ā āĀ heĀ repeated,Ā hisĀ grinĀ wideningĀ asĀ heĀ leanedĀ forwardĀ slightlyĀ inĀ hisĀ seat.Ā āĀ thatāsĀ cruel,Ā carmine.Ā iĀ wasĀ preparedĀ forĀ aĀ lotĀ ofĀ things,Ā butĀ notĀ youĀ shavingĀ twentyĀ yearsĀ offĀ myĀ lifeĀ inĀ oneĀ sentence.Ā āĀ heĀ pressedĀ aĀ handĀ toĀ hisĀ chestĀ inĀ mockĀ offense,Ā thoughĀ theĀ amusementĀ glimmeringĀ inĀ hisĀ eyesĀ betrayedĀ justĀ howĀ muchĀ heĀ enjoyedĀ herĀ attemptĀ atĀ humor.
restingĀ hisĀ elbowĀ onĀ theĀ table,Ā heĀ tiltedĀ hisĀ head,Ā gazeĀ fixedĀ onĀ herĀ withĀ aĀ teasingĀ sharpness.Ā āĀ though,Ā ifĀ youĀ wantĀ anĀ allowance,Ā iĀ supposeĀ iĀ couldĀ spareĀ someĀ pocketĀ changeĀ forĀ myĀ favoriteĀ granddaughter.Ā āĀ theĀ wordsĀ cameĀ withĀ aĀ playfulĀ lilt,Ā theĀ kindĀ thatĀ invitedĀ herĀ toĀ rollĀ herĀ eyesĀ orĀ swatĀ atĀ him,Ā butĀ underneathĀ itĀ wasĀ aĀ quietĀ satisfaction.Ā heĀ likedĀ seeingĀ herĀ pushĀ back,Ā evenĀ inĀ jest.Ā itĀ madeĀ herĀ feelĀ lessĀ distant,Ā lessĀ unreachable,Ā andĀ thatĀ wasĀ somethingĀ heĀ hadnātĀ realizedĀ heādĀ beenĀ cravingĀ untilĀ now.
herĀ genuineĀ smile,Ā thoughā¦Ā itĀ threwĀ himĀ offĀ balance.Ā itĀ wasnātĀ oneĀ ofĀ herĀ guardedĀ expressions,Ā norĀ oneĀ ofĀ theĀ tight,Ā politeĀ gesturesĀ sheĀ woreĀ whenĀ forcedĀ intoĀ pleasantries.Ā itĀ wasĀ real,Ā uncalculated,Ā andĀ forĀ theĀ firstĀ timeĀ heĀ feltĀ likeĀ heādĀ peeledĀ backĀ aĀ layerĀ sheĀ usuallyĀ keptĀ hidden.Ā hisĀ teasingĀ softenedĀ intoĀ somethingĀ gentler,Ā hisĀ voiceĀ loweringĀ almostĀ unconsciously.Ā āĀ see?Ā iĀ knewĀ youĀ hadĀ thatĀ inĀ you.Ā andĀ iāllĀ takeĀ thatĀ asĀ proofĀ iāmĀ doingĀ somethingĀ rightĀ byĀ stickingĀ around.Ā āĀ heĀ didnātĀ lookĀ away,Ā notĀ immediatelyĀ atĀ least,Ā lettingĀ herĀ seeĀ thatĀ heĀ meantĀ it.
eventually,Ā heĀ leanedĀ backĀ inĀ hisĀ chairĀ again,Ā lipsĀ tuggingĀ intoĀ aĀ crookedĀ smile.Ā āĀ donātĀ worry,Ā iāmĀ smartĀ enoughĀ toĀ knowĀ itāsĀ betterĀ toĀ beĀ onĀ yourĀ goodĀ sideĀ thanĀ theĀ bad.Ā iāveĀ gotĀ noĀ interestĀ inĀ makingĀ anĀ enemyĀ outĀ ofĀ you,Ā carmine.Ā especiallyĀ notĀ whenĀ youāreĀ finallyĀ admittingĀ howĀ muchĀ youādĀ missĀ meĀ ifĀ iĀ wasnātĀ around.Ā āĀ theĀ lastĀ lineĀ wasĀ pureĀ provocation,Ā threadedĀ withĀ humor,Ā butĀ hisĀ eyesĀ carriedĀ aĀ weightĀ thatĀ undercutĀ theĀ joke.Ā aĀ steadyĀ kindĀ ofĀ sincerityĀ thatĀ hintedĀ heĀ wasnātĀ justĀ hereĀ forĀ theĀ cookies,Ā theĀ airĀ conditioning,Ā orĀ evenĀ granny.Ā heĀ wasĀ hereĀ forĀ her.
"only twenty?" carmine rose an eyebrow, her lips still quirked in that rare genuine smile, "i should've tried harder. i wanted to get rid of 40. atleast give granny a fighting chance." it wasn't like her to be playful. she found it more... confusing to be purposefully playful. some customers found her dry humor endearing, but she wasn't trying to be funny in those moments. though, if the shoe landed then she couldn't complain. truthfully, she wasn't sure if this conversation with dowon would be considered playful- but it was the more lighthearted conversation the two could have together.
carmine wasn't entirely sure how to feel getting more familiar with dowon. he was the most familiar stranger she had ever met, and now he was starting to become a face she genuinely knew. now he was learning aspects to her from both past and present, and that was something that weighed heavy on her. the uncertainty left her agitated, but the familiarity did the same.
in this game between the two of them he was winning.
"well, i suppose i'll accept the allowance for all the birthdays you've missed."
humming underneath her breath, she decided to leave things be for now. this was the closest to camaraderie she had ever felt with him- admittedly, it was easier than being on edge all the time too. "you make my grandma happy," carmine admitted, "so you make me happy, i suppose... and you're less rude than other customers who keep coming back. i think i'm getting used to seeing you around."

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā atlasĀ tiltedĀ hisĀ headĀ slightlyĀ atĀ herĀ words,Ā herĀ confusionĀ asĀ naturalĀ asĀ breathing,Ā andĀ heĀ realizedĀ heĀ wasnātĀ usedĀ toĀ beingĀ onĀ theĀ receivingĀ endĀ ofĀ suchĀ simpleĀ honesty.Ā mostĀ peopleĀ inĀ hisĀ worldĀ askedĀ aboutĀ numbers,Ā stats,Ā wins,Ā andĀ lossesā¦Ā ifĀ theyĀ askedĀ atĀ all.Ā ellanaāsĀ questionĀ carriedĀ noĀ ulteriorĀ motive,Ā noĀ expectationĀ ofĀ performance,Ā justĀ theĀ quietĀ insistenceĀ thatĀ sheĀ wantedĀ toĀ beĀ presentĀ withĀ him.Ā theĀ thoughtĀ sankĀ deepĀ intoĀ him,Ā stirringĀ aĀ warmthĀ thatĀ hadĀ littleĀ toĀ doĀ withĀ theĀ coolĀ nightĀ airĀ brushingĀ alongĀ theirĀ cheeks.Ā herĀ handĀ slippedĀ intoĀ theĀ pocketĀ ofĀ hisĀ coat,Ā tentativeĀ andĀ cautious,Ā likeĀ sheĀ wasĀ testingĀ theĀ weightĀ ofĀ closenessĀ itself.Ā atlasĀ feltĀ theĀ faintĀ brushĀ ofĀ herĀ fingersĀ againstĀ hisĀ and,Ā withoutĀ thinking,Ā heĀ turnedĀ hisĀ handĀ palmĀ downĀ soĀ thatĀ hisĀ thumbĀ couldĀ sweepĀ slowlyĀ acrossĀ herĀ knucklesĀ throughĀ theĀ fabric.Ā itĀ wasĀ aĀ smallĀ movement,Ā butĀ intentional.Ā anĀ unspokenĀ reassuranceĀ thatĀ sheĀ wasnātĀ intruding,Ā thatĀ heĀ wantedĀ herĀ there.Ā itĀ struckĀ himĀ then,Ā theĀ ironyĀ ofĀ herĀ hesitations:Ā sheĀ thoughtĀ sheĀ wasnātĀ enough,Ā whenĀ allĀ heĀ everĀ foundĀ himselfĀ doingĀ wasĀ lookingĀ forĀ waysĀ toĀ keepĀ herĀ tetheredĀ close.
āĀ noĀ oneĀ gaveĀ meĀ aĀ hardĀ time.Ā āĀ heĀ finallyĀ answered,Ā hisĀ voiceĀ low,Ā thoughtful,Ā carefulĀ notĀ toĀ fractureĀ theĀ fragileĀ momentĀ betweenĀ them.Ā āĀ practiceĀ wasĀ justā¦Ā hard.Ā itĀ alwaysĀ is.Ā endlessĀ laps,Ā drillsĀ untilĀ yourĀ chestĀ feelsĀ likeĀ itāsĀ goingĀ toĀ collapse,Ā legsĀ burningĀ soĀ badĀ youĀ donātĀ knowĀ ifĀ youāllĀ standĀ theĀ nextĀ morning.Ā coachĀ callsĀ itĀ tearingĀ usĀ downĀ soĀ weĀ canĀ comeĀ backĀ sharper.Ā āĀ aĀ faintĀ laughĀ caughtĀ inĀ hisĀ throat,Ā bitterĀ andĀ fondĀ allĀ atĀ once.Ā āĀ maybeĀ heāsĀ right.Ā iĀ didĀ signĀ upĀ forĀ it,Ā afterĀ all.Ā āĀ hisĀ eyesĀ driftedĀ upĀ toĀ theĀ moonĀ aboveĀ them,Ā aĀ paleĀ sliverĀ againstĀ theĀ dark,Ā andĀ forĀ aĀ momentĀ heĀ letĀ himselfĀ wonderĀ ifĀ sheĀ wasĀ rightĀ aboutĀ dreamsĀ meaningĀ something.Ā heĀ wasnātĀ aĀ manĀ whoĀ clungĀ toĀ superstition,Ā butĀ heĀ couldnātĀ ignoreĀ theĀ wayĀ sheĀ carriedĀ herself.Ā tornĀ betweenĀ wantingĀ toĀ reachĀ forĀ himĀ andĀ holdingĀ herselfĀ back.Ā andĀ yet,Ā evenĀ now,Ā sheĀ leanedĀ againstĀ himĀ likeĀ heĀ wasĀ herĀ anchor.
āĀ itāsĀ notĀ thatĀ iĀ donātĀ wantĀ toĀ tellĀ you,Ā myĀ loveā¦Ā āĀ heĀ continued,Ā voiceĀ gentlerĀ now,Ā likeĀ theĀ confessionĀ wasĀ carvedĀ fromĀ someplaceĀ deeper.Ā āĀ itāsĀ justĀ thatĀ sometimesĀ itĀ feelsĀ likeĀ iāmĀ nothingĀ butĀ basketball.Ā everyĀ conversationĀ iĀ haveĀ withĀ teammates,Ā withĀ coaches,Ā evenĀ peopleĀ outsideĀ ofĀ itāĀ itāsĀ alwaysĀ theĀ same.Ā iĀ donātĀ wantĀ toĀ boreĀ youĀ withĀ theĀ playĀ byĀ plays.Ā āĀ hisĀ lipsĀ quirkedĀ intoĀ aĀ softerĀ smile,Ā hisĀ gazeĀ slidingĀ downĀ toĀ catchĀ hersĀ evenĀ asĀ sheĀ avoidedĀ it.Ā āĀ butĀ youĀ asking?Ā youĀ wantingĀ toĀ know?Ā thatāsĀ different.Ā itāsĀ notĀ aboutĀ theĀ gameĀ withĀ you,Ā itāsĀ aboutā¦Ā me.Ā āĀ atlasĀ slowedĀ hisĀ paceĀ deliberately,Ā lettingĀ theirĀ stepsĀ echoĀ againstĀ theĀ emptyĀ street,Ā savoringĀ theĀ strangeĀ privacyĀ ofĀ itĀ all.Ā heĀ angledĀ hisĀ bodyĀ closerĀ toĀ hers,Ā hisĀ handĀ stillĀ brushingĀ hersĀ inĀ theĀ pocketĀ ofĀ hisĀ coat,Ā keepingĀ herĀ tethered.Ā āĀ youĀ donātĀ haveĀ toĀ fightĀ forĀ spaceĀ atĀ myĀ side,Ā ellana.Ā youĀ alreadyĀ takeĀ upĀ moreĀ ofĀ meĀ thanĀ theĀ gameĀ everĀ could.Ā āĀ hisĀ wordsĀ hungĀ inĀ theĀ quietĀ night,Ā heavyĀ withĀ sincerity,Ā andĀ heĀ hopedĀ sheĀ wouldĀ hearĀ themĀ forĀ whatĀ theyĀ were:Ā notĀ justĀ reassurance,Ā butĀ truth.
Ellana kept silent, listening to his words. Listening to him vent for once. She had noticed this small tendency of his as of late- a new development in their relationship? Marriage? A small little quirk where if something caused a bit of discomfort, he would remove it. When they moved into their house together, she had said off handedly that maybe painting the walls would brighten things up more. The next day she was presented with new color palettes to pick from. She had complained slightly that the knives in the kitchen were too dull? Instead of buying a knife sharpener, he got an entirely new set. A small ache in her shoulders resulted in a full blown body massage. It was as if any sort of misstep had to be removed, distanced away from the two of them or else it would break something. She wasnāt sure what or if her impressions were even correct, but that was the nagging feeling she got in the back of her head.Ā
It reminded her of her children at the schools. How playtime was a sacred thing and any mishap would ruin the entirety of some of the kids' day. She always found it funny how intensely those little beings became over the things they viewed with such sentimental value. Here and now, atlas was like a child and their marriage was play time.Ā
āYou know,ā she whispered, looking up at him with a quiet consideration, āi did say for better and for worse remember? When we took our vows, we swore to be there for each other no matter what. Youāre allowed to take up whatever spaces you want, even if it is just to complain about practice. I donāt think anyone would think training for professionals would be easy, but if it is taxing on you, itās taxing on you. I donāt want you trying to protect me from your bad days when that isnāt what i signed up for- what we promised each other, atlas.ā
Ellana looked at him with no ill will, no anger or frustration. Just genuine consideration and patience- the same thing she has afforded him each and every time they started this relationship. Their wasnāt perfect, but it was perfect for him. They had their highs and lows like any couple- atlas always felt more intensely than she did. He was the one more likely to explode, while she weathered the storm. But his care had always been more expressive than hers too in that way. Whereas atlas made outright efforts to show you his care, she was more subtle that often went unnoticed by others. They had their balance.Ā
āI wouldnāt ask you to lean on me, if i wasnāt prepared to fall with you.ā she reminded him kindly. Moving her gaze away from him, she continued their walk to the restaurant. āMaybe itās worth talking to your coach about how practice is going? Or talking to your teammates to see if anyone else is feeling the same? And thereās always other teams- i know more than one team wanted to recruit you.ā
Oh, brother of mine. It's been a long, long time since I've seen my face in your eyes.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā cloverāsĀ forkĀ stilledĀ overĀ herĀ plateĀ asĀ sheĀ listened,Ā watchingĀ theĀ wayĀ reyanĀ choseĀ hisĀ wordsĀ carefully,Ā almostĀ tenderly,Ā evenĀ whenĀ speakingĀ ofĀ peopleĀ whoĀ clearlyĀ didnātĀ deserveĀ theĀ effort.Ā sheĀ wonderedĀ howĀ heĀ managedĀ it.Ā howĀ heĀ couldĀ turnĀ irritationĀ intoĀ patience,Ā andĀ crueltyĀ intoĀ somethingĀ softĀ enoughĀ toĀ excuse.Ā āĀ thatāsā¦Ā nicerĀ thanĀ mostĀ peopleĀ wouldĀ botherĀ toĀ be.Ā āĀ sheĀ admittedĀ atĀ last,Ā herĀ voiceĀ quieterĀ thanĀ intended.Ā sheĀ shiftedĀ inĀ herĀ seat,Ā leaningĀ backĀ slightly,Ā asĀ thoughĀ distanceĀ mightĀ makeĀ herĀ wordsĀ lessĀ vulnerable.Ā āĀ iĀ thinkĀ ifĀ iĀ triedĀ that,Ā iādĀ justĀ getĀ moreĀ frustrated.Ā butĀ youā¦Ā youĀ makeĀ itĀ soundĀ likeĀ forgivingĀ peopleĀ beforeĀ theyāveĀ evenĀ apologizedĀ isĀ theĀ mostĀ naturalĀ thingĀ inĀ theĀ world.Ā ā
hisĀ mentionĀ ofĀ herĀ fatherĀ drewĀ aĀ huffĀ ofĀ reluctantĀ laughterĀ fromĀ her,Ā theĀ soundĀ breakingĀ theĀ heavinessĀ thatĀ hadĀ settledĀ overĀ them.Ā āĀ youĀ wereĀ rightĀ notĀ toĀ trustĀ him.Ā āĀ sheĀ said,Ā shakingĀ herĀ headĀ asĀ memoriesĀ ofĀ charredĀ edgesĀ andĀ smokeĀ detectorsĀ flashedĀ throughĀ herĀ mind.Ā āĀ heĀ nearlyĀ setĀ theĀ toasterĀ onĀ fireĀ once.Ā ifĀ itĀ werenātĀ forĀ you,Ā weādĀ probablyĀ beĀ livingĀ offĀ takeoutĀ andĀ scorchedĀ bread.Ā āĀ sheĀ reachedĀ forĀ theĀ jarĀ ofĀ chiliĀ oilĀ heādĀ slidĀ acrossĀ theĀ table,Ā addingĀ aĀ carefulĀ drizzleĀ toĀ herĀ curry.Ā theĀ rich,Ā fragrantĀ scentĀ roseĀ instantly,Ā groundingĀ herĀ inĀ theĀ moment.Ā āĀ stillā¦Ā iĀ thinkĀ heĀ appreciatesĀ thatĀ youĀ triedĀ toĀ teachĀ him.Ā evenĀ ifĀ heādĀ neverĀ admitĀ itĀ outĀ loud.Ā āĀ herĀ chestĀ tightenedĀ atĀ theĀ thoughtĀ ofĀ casimirĀ lyingĀ inĀ thatĀ hospitalĀ bed,Ā andĀ sheĀ foundĀ herselfĀ clingingĀ toĀ theĀ warmthĀ ofĀ theĀ foodĀ inĀ frontĀ ofĀ herĀ asĀ thoughĀ itĀ wereĀ anĀ anchor.
sheĀ tiltedĀ herĀ head,Ā studyingĀ reyanĀ asĀ heĀ layeredĀ yogurtĀ sauceĀ overĀ hisĀ ownĀ plate,Ā speakingĀ aboutĀ possibilitiesĀ withĀ theĀ kindĀ ofĀ cautionĀ sheĀ recognizedĀ tooĀ well.Ā hisĀ wordsĀ wereĀ careful,Ā butĀ theĀ weightĀ ofĀ hisĀ intentĀ wasnātĀ lostĀ onĀ her.Ā āĀ youĀ donātĀ haveĀ toĀ defendĀ wantingĀ theĀ best.Ā āĀ sheĀ saidĀ gently,Ā restingĀ herĀ cheekĀ againstĀ herĀ handĀ asĀ sheĀ leanedĀ intoĀ theĀ tableāsĀ edge.Ā āĀ youāreĀ allowedĀ toĀ thinkĀ ahead.Ā moreĀ peopleĀ should.Ā halfĀ theĀ peopleĀ iĀ seeĀ atĀ workĀ areĀ tooĀ distractedĀ orĀ selfishĀ toĀ evenĀ try,Ā andĀ itĀ showsĀ inĀ theirĀ behaviour.Ā you'reĀ aĀ dedicatedĀ andĀ hardworkingĀ man,Ā andĀ that'sĀ somethingĀ toĀ admire.Ā āĀ theĀ convictionĀ inĀ herĀ voiceĀ surprisedĀ evenĀ her,Ā butĀ itĀ feltĀ necessary,Ā asĀ thoughĀ heĀ neededĀ toĀ hearĀ itĀ fromĀ someoneĀ otherĀ thanĀ himself.
herĀ gazeĀ lingeredĀ onĀ himĀ aĀ momentĀ longer,Ā thenĀ softenedĀ withĀ aĀ teasingĀ glintĀ toĀ dispelĀ theĀ weightĀ ofĀ herĀ honesty.Ā āĀ andĀ forĀ theĀ record,Ā itāsĀ aĀ lotĀ harderĀ thanĀ justĀ pushingĀ paperĀ around.Ā āĀ sheĀ added,Ā swirlingĀ herĀ forkĀ throughĀ herĀ riceĀ again.Ā ā deadlines,Ā clients,Ā courtĀ dates,Ā endlessĀ stressāĀ itāsĀ moreĀ thanĀ enoughĀ toĀ driveĀ mostĀ peopleĀ mad.Ā āĀ aĀ smallĀ smirkĀ curvedĀ herĀ lips,Ā lightĀ butĀ pointed.Ā āĀ thoughĀ betweenĀ youĀ andĀ me,Ā iĀ thinkĀ theĀ paperĀ cutsĀ mightĀ beĀ theĀ leastĀ ofĀ yourĀ worries.Ā ā
his eyes crinkle as he smiles wider. "don't get me wrong it's definitely a learned skill. i did not have any of this patience when i was younger. you should've seen me, i was short tempered and moody. it's surreal in some ways how much i've matured." the thought of himself in his youth brings a laugh out of him. he was a reckless youth that nothing but reckless pride. the sudden announcement of his son had forcibly put him on the path of maturity- well, his son and his girlfriend at the time.
"i got into cooking because it was an easy job to get at the time, and just... eventually learned my way through the industry. dish washer, butcher, sous chef- you name it, i've probably done it. you meet a lot of people- terrible customers, terrible coworkers, terrible bosses." the redhead gave her a knowing look, "you eventually learn to pick which battles you want to attempt." he wondered if it was the same for lawyers. a lot of their jobs were based on arguments and winning. it wasn't necessarily about picking and choosing battles, but ensuring each battle you were in won. rubbing the bridge of his nose shyly, he moved onto other topics to pardon himself from looking any sillier than attempting to part some words of wisdom.
"your dad burned pre-cooked rice in the microwave once, i don't know if he ever told you that story." the image was burned into his brain as it always managed to bring a laugh out of him. even now, his lips quirked upward. "i think his argument was if he heats it up at a higher temperature for a shorter period it should even out.... well, you can probably imagine what happened."
it was easier to the soothe the ache in his chest when it was a happier memory to think back on. his friend was someone who was always smiling, trying to brighten up your day. reyan tried his best to carry that torch with him throughout this journey. especially in making sure clover remembered him with brightness, not the dour image of him resting in a bed trying to recover.
he kept his eyes on her plate, mindful of her reactions to the food. he was always... anticipating clover's reaction to his cooking. he wanted her to like it! he also found joy in learning what she liked and what she didn't like. something about making a meal that was so specifically catered to the person struck intimate with him.
"what's been your most exciting case?" reyan asked gently, before pausing, "is that something i can ask? can you share?"
