I am not liking how they handled Amber in ep 7. She already knew weeks ago? Then what was the point of that last fight in ep 6? She knew that he ran off for crime fighting and she made up a whole thing about him ditching them? Well, she was very convincing then.
For real though, it doesn't add up. She knew for several weeks but then what was the reason she broke up with him in ep 6? For one thing, why was that the last straw? He didn't miss anything important. If he missed some important date, then fine, I get it, just say you don't want to date someone who has to miss so much. Simple as that.
But was it really because he lied and made her feel stupid and unimportant and doesn't trust her? That's the reason? I get that the lying and silly excuses might make her feel like her intelligence is being insulted but if she knows about heroes and secret identities then I think she should be smart enough to know why Mark would keep this whole thing a secret if he's only known her for a few months. And about the unimportant part, that seems a little self centered. Like of she was dating a fireman or whatever and he had to go put out a fire and missed a date, would she really hold that against him. Like I feel keeping people alive is just a bit higher of a priority. It doesn't mean he doesn't give a crap about you. It means he's got responsibilities. Seriously, does Amber really expect him to choose her over saving lives?
This is show is great at subverting expectations but they bit off more than they could chew. They should not have tried to show off so much.
This is could've just been done in a less confusing way.
Say in ep 6, after the fight with the first robot is over and Mark comes back. She could've have made it as vague as possible when confronting Mark and made him realize she already knew and said they needed to talk later. Amber has known for several weeks but here she's been thinking what this whole means to her and whether or not she wants this life. Not mad over missed dates because he had save lives. Just coming to a conclusion about if she wants to be dating someone that needs to risk his life everyday. They talk, she tells him she doesn't want to wonder if he's gonna make it alive the next time, that she doesn't want that kind of stress, they break up. Only here, Amber's thinking would actually make more sense. Ep 6 fight could be the final straw because he was seriously struggling with the robot and he only won that fight because the poor guy killed himself (seriously, even if he is a douche, nobody deserves shot like that. And at least he took no for an answer with those 3 girls so that's a plus ) and it would echo back what Nolan said at the guardian's funeral about difficulty finding people that would accept their way of life.
Or they could actually have Amber not know if they want the invincible reveal so bad and Amber just comes to that conclusion right there. Always late, missed dates, too many close calls. Says she doesn't want that life, break up, done.
You can subvert expectations by having the love interest not want that stuff in her life. You don't need to make such an illogical turn.
