For the next time we’re in NYC....
Today we went on an adventure to Dead Horse Bay, just before the bridge to Fort Tilden. It's known as the weirdest beach in Brooklyn, but I found it quite magical. It's where trash goes to be fabulous -- just glass bottles and beautiful ceramic pieces. People come here to collect treasures. I love the natural/post-natural intersection of this place. This is the kind of stuff that New Yorker articles are made of.

Startups are ruthless and leaderless and unrestrained, and they seem so tiny and powerless, until you realize, but only after it’s too late, that they’re devastatingly dangerous: Bang! Ka-boom! Think of it this way: the Times is a nation-state; BuzzFeed is stateless. Disruptive innovation is competitive strategy for an age seized by terror.

Powershift: Knowledge, Wealth, and Violence at the Edge of the 21st Century
Alvin Toffler
A visionary lens on how social, political, and economic power structures are changing at the dawn of the information age, presaging many of today’s cultural paradigms and touching on other timely topics like networked knowledge, the role of intuition, and the value of adding context.
"Make bombs... Please stop driving taxis."
I like seeing social media used for good to make powerful statements. Not to mention that this is also awesome marketing.
Found this on Dezeen.
When I lived in Hanoi, Vietnam, I would spend most evenings catching up with friends at a bar called Tadioto. More than a bar, Taditoto was a feeling and Nguyen Qui Duc was at the heart of it. He’s an amazing friend, journalist, creator, thinker and tastemaker. Taditoto, which means “we go by car” in Vietnamese has closed and opened many times, but it will always remain at the center of my Hanoi memories.
I love all the design press that Hanoi is getting right now and think I might have to book a trip back soon….
Presenting my life system for Ayse Birsel's Deconstruction:Reconstruction Class. We were tasked with creating a system and a language.
Empathy research is thriving these days. Several new books enthusiastically champion an increase in empathy as a cure for humanity’s ills. This enthusiasm may be misplaced, however. Empathy has some unfortunate features; it is parochial, narrow-minded, and innumerate. We’re often at our best when we’re smart enough not to rely on it.
Gillian demonstrates the power of the light at the Paul Cocksedge opening. This was my first Thursday night out in Chelsea. All the galleries are open and fabulous people amble about.
Mike came out to SF to help me move to NYC. I only had a few suitcases so the help was mostly moral support, which I needed. While I know there are so many NYC adventures ahead, I know I belong in San Francisco.
We started out the weekend with an Orioles vs. Giants game on Friday night, then went on an epic run through the Presidio and hosted about 50 people for my goodbye party on Saturday. We biked to OutsideLands on Sunday and saw some awesome acts -- Hall & Oates and Red Hot Chili Peppers rocked. But the best part? The secret Head and The Heart concert in the woods. Can't wait to see them in NYC this fall!
