While Valentine didn’t think Morena as slow or ignorant as the family thought her to be, Valentine was grateful that she was so innocent. She always took things at face value and didn’t question much. It made hiding her secret that much easier when she didn’t have to always choose her words so precisely. “We should. Do you think they have their heads so far up-” Valentine paused thinking it best to not insult Morena’s family. “-in the gossip that they wouldn’t notice us slip into the gardens?”

Morena glanced over to where her parents were sitting with a few other purebloods, studying them for a few seconds. She liked to think that she had enough experience in these situations that she could judge pretty well how much notice they would take of her. “I don’t think so. They look pretty absorbed in whatever it is they’re talking about, they might not even look around for another hour, much less notice if we’re gone.”

Rose smiled a bit as she prepared herself to hear what was no doubt going to be another terrible pick up line. She played with the edges of the book in front of her as she waited. As the Quidditch reference left Morena’s mouth, Rose couldn’t help the small groan that slipped past her lips. She’d heard this one one too many times being a Chaser for the Slytherin team. “Worse… but only because I’ve heard it so many times. You’d be surprised how many boys think that pick up line works on Chasers.” Rose responded with a playful roll of her eyes, the corners of her lips quirking upwards.

“Gosh, I really thought that was the one.” Morena giggled, only half meaning her words. “Really? I thought it was very original, but I guess Witch Weekly was just stealing pick up lines from strangers in a bar. I thought they would be above that.” Morena said earnestly, but then she sparked up again. “Hey, at least the guys using that line on you are showing that they care about your interests. That’s a good sign at least, right?”

Valentine softened slightly as she looked at her sister-in-law. She always had to be so on guard when it came to the family she married into but Morena was different. She was a ray of sunshine in an otherwise dull and drab family. “No, Dorian did not. We didn’t really-” She paused realising she almost gave away too much information about her and Dorian’s arrangement. She cleared her throat before taking another drink. “Well at least they’re not turning their chatter towards us.”

If Morena had been a bit more attentive, she might have noticed how Valentine and her brother never talked long about their marriage, but Morena could only think dreamily of some distant day where she had someone to share her life with. “That’s always something to be grateful for.” Morena replied with a small smile. “We should make the most of it.”

Rose softened a little bit when she put a face to the voice that had spoken around her shoulder. Though it didn’t stop her from rolling her eyes a bit at the mention of Witch Weekly. Her mother wasn’t the biggest fan of Witch Weekly so Rose had hardly been a fan of the magazine either. Morena was so cheerful though that Rose returned the smile and motioned for Morena to try again. “One more. Though before you do, please sit. Join me. Stop making me look like an angry, rude person.”

Morena smiled brightly at Rose’s response, happy to have been invited to stay rather than being shooed away, since she didn’t want to be forced to find a table on her own. “Okay, are you ready for this?” Morena tried to remember the article she’d read. “Are you a snitch...” She let out a small giggle before continuing. “Because you’re everything I’ve been searching for. Is that better or worse?”

Of course I got on the team! Kingsley’s selfish, heated thoughts went to immediately. Yet he masked it all with a smile and nod. “Well it’ certainly much larger and more fulfilling than doing it for a school; and getting to watch all of the massive crowds as you fly around.” He then arched a brow, “More fun, eh? Not as many dodgy customers as it’s known for?”

Morena listened to Kingsley talk, enchanted, she hadn’t been a part of the school team but just watching from the stands had been thrilling, she couldn’t begin to imagine how it would feel actually playing for a professional team. “That sounds amazing. You’re so lucky!” Morena laughed and shook her head, “no there’s plenty of dodgy customers, but they’re not so bad once you get used to them. We have a couple of regulars who are actually really friendly... If you ignore their interest in dead bodies and all that.”

“You know pick up lines like that make me wish I was still quarantined back at home.” Rose said running a hand through her hair before looking up from the Prophet to see who it was that had taken the seat opposite her.

“Really?” Morena replied with a pout. “I read it in Witch Weekly. They said it would work for sure.” Granted, Morena probably should have known better than to take advice for making new friends from a magazine but at least no one could say she wasn’t trying. “Okay, can I try a different one then?” Morena asked, giving the other girl a bright, hopeful smile.

“Merlin everyone is so dull lately. It’s like someone died or something.” Valentine mused before taking a drink from her glass. Being stuck in side the Avery manor had made the blonde notoriously grumpy. She was looking for either some fun or to ruin someone else’s day.

“Welcome to life as an Avery.” Morena said, biting her lip to suppress a cheeky giggle. “Didn’t Dorian warn you that our lives are mostly full of sitting around and gossiping about which pureblood is marrying which.” Morena didn’t much mind the lifestyle, she certainly preferred it her parents gossiping about pureblood marriages than giving her a hard time about her grades or her friends or whatever else it was she’d done to disappoint them.

Once he turned around and saw Morena’s kind features, a smile took his own. Those damn Hufflepuffs just always had such contagious smiles and laughs. As she greeted him, Kingsley stepped over to Morena, “Indeed it has been,” and leaned on the wall once more, “Pretty great considering I’m off playing Quidditch now. How about yourself, Morena?”

“Wait, seriously? You got on the team? I had no idea! That is so so cool,” Morena said, her smile growing even more. Recently Morena had felt like there was only ever bad news, so hearing just a bit of good news was a welcome change for her. “Merlin, it really has been forever. I’ve been pretty good too,” she didn’t even think about whether that was a lie or not. “I’ve been working at Borgin and Burkes since school finished, which isn’t half as exciting as playing quidditch, but it’s actually more fun that you’d think.”

Looking for Trouble

For one reason or another, there was always some sort of social encounter that got Kingsley into trouble whenever he visited London. Especially if he went to the Leaky Cauldron. With that in mind, he had left Quidditch practice to go find some entertainment for the night, waiting to visit the establishment last. For now, he leaned on a wall in an alleyway, grinning as though he was better than everyone else; because, well, in Kingsley’s eyes, he was. Although he soon grew bored, and walked a bit down the pavement. A voice then caught his attention, turning around.

Morena had been looking for an excuse not to head home straight away after she’d finished her shift, her parents had been arguing more than usual lately and the girl had no desire to get caught in the middle of that. She’d stopped to pick up a new quill and a few potion ingredients she’d noticed they’d been running low on, but Morena still wasn’t ready to head home and she felt a bit of relief when she noticed a familiar figure outside the pub. “Hey Kingsley!” She greeted, all smiles. “Long time, no see. How’ve you been?”

“Probably not as fun as one might think,” Lily said, pulling out her wand, “I mean, think about it, I could only venture out into the Muggle world when it was actually snowing outside.” With a quick wave of her wand, the redhead performed a quick general counter spell, which seemed to stop the fall of snow from around the two girls.

“Right.” Morena said, nodding although she wasn’t sure how much she agreed. She had hardly anything to do with the muggle world, and she’d been raised not to worry about what they thought. It always came as a surprise to Morena when she remembered how different her life was from so many of her peers. “It worked!” She marveled, easily distracted from her thoughts. “I wish I could do spells like that.”

“Fine. You tell me after we’ve both had a few drinks, and I can pretend to forget about it.’ he laughed at his own joke, taking a drink. He was just starting to feel warm, just starting to feel that certain bravado. “We can talk about other things. How are…things? Aren’t you working? Borgin’s, right?”

Morena chewed on her lip, as if she was thinking hard about it, but it was mostly just for show. She knew she’d give up her story eventually. “Uh huh.” Morena nodded enthusiastically, thrilled just to know that Dorian had remembered the small fact. “Mr. Borgin was nice enough to let me start working there permanently after the school closed.”

“Entertaining is one word for it,” Lily replied with a single giggle and a shake of her head, before glancing up at the falling snow once more, “Do you think a simple finite incantatem would work to stop it? I really can’t live like this forever, Morena.”

“It’s worth a try.” Morena nodded, stretching out her arms to enjoy the snow for a few more moments before her roommate could manage to stop the spell. “What do you think it would be like though? To just live your life being followed around by a snowstorm.”

Valentine didn’t like that Morena was so down on herself. Though if the months of abuse she’d seen spewn at the girl were any indication of the past couple of years she could understand why here sister-in-law had such a poor self image. She smiled a bit as the brunette said crime books. She’d seen a handful of them around their library, maybe the young Avery did know more than she let on. “See that’s more than I could have ever gotten on my own. I suppose I’ll have to give reading one of his crime books a try and see where it leads me.”

“I’m sure that’s not true.” Morena replied in an animated tone, halfway between being pleased at the small compliment and surprised at the suggestion that Valentine wouldn’t have been able to figure out the small detail on her own. She was so accustomed to her family letting her think she was useless that hearing genuine thanks from her new sister-in-law made her do a double take. “Don’t get too discouraged by that sort of thing though. If there’s one thing I know about my brother it’s that he’s good at hiding things. You might not be able to figure out small things like what books he likes at first but...” She shrugged her shoulders. “It’ll come. Eventually.” That was practically Morena’s motto.

“Are you speaking from experience?” He asked, chuckling. “Merlin, I hope not. I don’t want to hear any horror stories.” He paused, his face humoring her. “Unless you have them.”

Morena could feel her cheeks burning in embarrassment at his question, she’d learned her about her alcohol tolerance levels the hard way, but luckily none of her family had witnessed that ordeal. “Unfortunately, I am. But I’ve gone this long without sharing my horror stories and I’d like to continue with that.”

She wondered idly how far Morena would take this need to help her. It was tempting to press her luck. Could she get the other girl to break into her father’s office with her? It seemed like quite a line to cross so she kept it simple. Moving from one room to another, she located the bar that had been set up for the adults who preferred something less celebratory. She glanced at Morena as they drew closer. “Do you think you can be enough of a distraction to help me get back there?" 

Morena followed Mariela into the next room eagerly, but as her eyes slid to the bar she felt doubt bubbling up in her. She took a deep breath, nervous at what Mariela was suggesting. The brunette looked at Mariela, reminding herself of her decision to make this at the very least not the absolute worst night of her life. She nodded decisively, glancing from the bar then back to Mariela determination shining in her eyes. “I’ve got this. Go for it.” She gave her an excited grin before falling to the floor in an overly dramatic fashion, clutching her hands to her side and sobbing loudly, all the while keeping an eye on Mariela as people moved away from the bar.

She could see the shift in the other girl and she was almost grateful for the reprieve from feeling like she wasn’t living up to Morena’s silver lining standards. They simply operated on different levels. “It’s not exactly my favorite thing,” she admitted calmly, her tone holding an indifference that was entirely made up. The offer was sweet, though Mariela was sure she’d never accept it. “That’s kind of you. I’m not sure how you could change it but I appreciate the thought.” For once, her words rang true. It wasn’t often anyone gave Mariela something without wanting anything in return. She looked at the empty glass in her hand and nodded. “I do.” She paused, glancing around. “Let’s go get something a little stronger, though." 

“I know, but the offer still stands.” Morena shrugged, she didn’t really know what she could ever offer Mariela to help her, she’d always seemed so independent to her, but if there was ever something she could do, Morena would do it. She bit her lip nervously, a few glasses of champagne was one thing but something stronger sounded extremely sounded extremely intimidating to Morena. She could already see her parents’ disappointed looks. But disappointing her family wasn’t something new to Morena and she’d promised to do whatever Mariela needed to help her get through the night. “Okay.” She said with a firm nod and a giddy smile. “What do you suggest?”
