âIâm not your love, Valentine.â Leviâs voice was quiet, resigned. He hadnât expected anything else from her response but her constant attempts to worm herself back into his good graces were growing downright exhausting. âAre you offering to host? Iâm sure that would really impress the society women youâre attempting to suck up to.â
âPlease, Leviticus, youâll always be my first. No matter how you wish you werenât or try to forget.â She smiled up at him before considering his question. âThatâs a perfect plan. Look at you still helping me out after all of these years. You do still care donât you?â
Morena glanced over to where her parents were sitting with a few other purebloods, studying them for a few seconds. She liked to think that she had enough experience in these situations that she could judge pretty well how much notice they would take of her. âI donât think so. They look pretty absorbed in whatever it is theyâre talking about, they might not even look around for another hour, much less notice if weâre gone.â
Valentine smiled a bit more at Morenaâs response. She looked around and motioned the closest house elf before demanding that a bottle of champagne be taken out to the gardens. âLetâs go to the gardens then.â She smiled grabbing her champagne glass and motioning towards the door. âIâm sure weâll have a nicer time out there than we are currently having.â
If Morena had been a bit more attentive, she might have noticed how Valentine and her brother never talked long about their marriage, but Morena could only think dreamily of some distant day where she had someone to share her life with. âThatâs always something to be grateful for.â Morena replied with a small smile. âWe should make the most of it.â
While Valentine didnât think Morena as slow or ignorant as the family thought her to be, Valentine was grateful that she was so innocent. She always took things at face value and didnât question much. It made hiding her secret that much easier when she didnât have to always choose her words so precisely. âWe should. Do you think they have their heads so far up-â Valentine paused thinking it best to not insult Morenaâs family. â-in the gossip that they wouldnât notice us slip into the gardens?â
âOr maybe itâs a refreshing break from all the tragedy thatâs been occurring lately. I, for one, am relieved things are relatively quiet.â Levi knew that answer Valentine would lead to no good and that this time it would be entirely his own fault. But the liquor in his glass loosened his tongue and Atalia was not there to stop him.
Valentine smiled a bit at the familiar voice that responded to her. They were like moths drawn to a flame- Levi and Valentine never able to stay apart. âThatâs exactly what I mean love.â She turned to him and tilted her head a bit. âItâs been quiet. No oneâs tried to kill anyone in weeks, if that isnât cause for a party I donât know what is.â
âWelcome to life as an Avery.â Morena said, biting her lip to suppress a cheeky giggle. âDidnât Dorian warn you that our lives are mostly full of sitting around and gossiping about which pureblood is marrying which.â Morena didnât much mind the lifestyle, she certainly preferred it her parents gossiping about pureblood marriages than giving her a hard time about her grades or her friends or whatever else it was sheâd done to disappoint them.
Valentine softened slightly as she looked at her sister-in-law. She always had to be so on guard when it came to the family she married into but Morena was different. She was a ray of sunshine in an otherwise dull and drab family. âNo, Dorian did not. We didnât really-â She paused realising she almost gave away too much information about her and Dorianâs arrangement. She cleared her throat before taking another drink. âWell at least theyâre not turning their chatter towards us.â
âMerlin everyone is so dull lately. Itâs like someone died or something.â Valentine mused before taking a drink from her glass. Being stuck in side the Avery manor had made the blonde notoriously grumpy. She was looking for either some fun or to ruin someone elseâs day.
âMaybe.â Morena said thoughtfully, shrugging her shoulders to dismiss the doubtful thoughts that began to pool. She chewed on her lip, trying to think back to the last time sheâd seen her brother reading, but she could hardly even remember the last time Dorian had been at the house. âI think he used to read crime novels when I was a kid. I would sneak into his room sometimes and steal them, but I never enjoyed them as much as he seemed to.â
Valentine didnât like that Morena was so down on herself. Though if the months of abuse sheâd seen spewn at the girl were any indication of the past couple of years she could understand why here sister-in-law had such a poor self image. She smiled a bit as the brunette said crime books. Sheâd seen a handful of them around their library, maybe the young Avery did know more than she let on. âSee thatâs more than I could have ever gotten on my own. I suppose Iâll have to give reading one of his crime books a try and see where it leads me.â
She knew she wouldnât have to hide it - not with the right person. But sheâd found the right person already. Theyâd just up and disappeared for work and hadnât come back. So her nose crinkled slightly at the idea, eyes flickering to her drink. âI know. Iâve met a handful like that before. I just - I think with everything going on out - out there⊠I wouldnât want to drag them into it, you know? Iâd worry too much that I couldnât protect them.â It was a valid reason sheâd avoided wandering to deeply into the muggle world upon her return to England.
Chuckling softly, Persephone rose her glass to her lips. âVery well then. Catch me up on what Iâve missed in my travels? I seem to ask everyone this question and I learn something new every time I hear an answer.â
Valentine watched Persephone for a moment before taking a drink from her glass. âThe only muggles I know are my parents. They werenât exactly open to the idea of anyone finding out their daughters were abnormal. Though I suppose with all the halfbloods there have to be some muggles who donât frighten to hear that witches and wizards do exist.â Valentine shrugged not that she or Haven much cared for the company of any muggles they did happen to run into on accident. Even before they started showing magic the two girls knew they had been destined for more than just the rich social life their parents were molding them for. âThat is very true. Though the heart wants what it wants when it wants. You donât particularly get to dictate what or when the heart dictates is the right time.â
âWell when did you leave so that I know Iâm not starting with something you already know.â She smiled a little. Truthfully she didnât much pay attention to what was going on outside of her home and her family unless a certain Nott heir was involved.
Yana sighed, taking a small sip of the drink someone had handed her. â Explain it to me again? â she said slowly. The cultural differences between her home and here were glaringly obvious sometimes. â Iâm still not really sure I understand. Why is it called a pub crawl? No one is crawling anywhere. â
Valentine smiled a little at the girl that stood slightly off to her side. âItâs called a pub crawl because for some the whole purpose is to end the night crawling home.â She smiled before raising her glass and taking a drink. âThough for others the enjoyment comes in watching those idiots.â
Rhea immediately regretted taking part in this stupid thing the moment she walked into the bar, already overflowing with all sorts of people drunk out of their minds. She had to make a considered effort to keep from rolling her eyes, bristling every time someoneâs arms brushed hers and bumped into as she made her way to the bar. âDammit.â She muttered, realizing sheâd left all her money back at her apartment, and she had not come all this way to go leave without having had a single drink. She turned to the person beside her, batting her eyelashes and said in sugary sweet voice that made her queasy, âWhatâs a girl gotta do to get a drink around here?âÂ
Valentine had opted out of joining her husband at the Flint-Rosier engagement party. Theyâd both agreed that her presence would be less than welcomed. Plus this gave Valentine an opportunity to go out and actually enjoy her evening. She wasnât much of a beer drinker but they seemed to be the only drinks on special and itâd be strange to drink a glass of wine while everyone else was drinking beer. She held her mug tentatively before taking a small sip, almost choking when she heard a familiar voice beside her. âWell you could always just ask...â She smiled motioning for the bartender to come over. âDid you not receive an invitation to the engagement party either?âÂ
9. Your character walking in on mine in bed with someone.
Valentine never regretting giving Avalon the password to the Slytherin common room. Ever since Haven had graduated, Valentine found herself craving her sisterâs company more and more. Normally, Avalon would find her way down to the dungeons when Valentine was feeling particularly bored or in need of talking to someone who understood the kind of life the Lexington sisters had growing up in. This one particular time though, Avalon managed to find herself waltzing into Valentineâs dormitory at just the wrong moment.
Valentine had been curled into Chrysonâs side and theyâd been slowly exchanging kisses when Avalon threw the door open. Squeaking, Valentine had quickly pulled the covers over herself and her boyfriend before slowly peaking out to look at her sister who was thankfully still oblivious to what sheâd just walked in on.
âCan I help you with something my dear?â Valentine asked pulling the covers up over her naked torso as she sat up. Avalon stopped just at the end of the bed finally realising what sheâd walked in on.
âoh... I just wanted to talk to you about my problems Iâd been having with...â She trailed off as her eyes moved to Chryson, who was also now sitting up in Valentineâs bed. âNever mind youâre busy. We can talk about everything later.â Avalon smiled before turning on her heel and waving over her shoulder before exiting the room.
âMy former stepfather⊠was not a fan of anything out of the ordinary. I was just determined to not give him any reasons not to dislike me any more than he already did.â Alix raised her glass to her lips and emptied half the glass. âMy little brother didnât start showing magic until late either. When his Hogwarts letter came he got kicked out too. So we had a lot of motivation to hide things.â She finished off her glass and set it to the side. âMama moved to London when Quinn started school but I insisted on staying at Beauxbatons.â
After she ended things with Wyatt, there had been reminders of him everywhere. Any motorcycle, leather jacket, even tattoos were enough to trigger nostalgia. More than once sheâd wondered if sheâd made the right decision. With a sigh she rolled the empty glass between her fingers. âAt least this time I donât have tattoos on my body courtesy of my ex.âÂ
âThat sounds horrid. Your stepfather sounds like an ass... Iâm glad you, your mother, and your brother got out of that.â Valentine smiled at the other girl watching as she drained her glass. A different house elf than the first appeared just as Valentine thought about calling one to refill Alixâs glass. âWould you like more wine or would you prefer something else to drink? Iâm sure your burger is almost ready. You could eat her or we could move into the dining room.â
Valentine scanned the other girl discreetly not seeing any tattoos but the other witch could have been hiding them or they were just somewhere she couldnât see. âYes. I suppose a reminder that permanent would be difficult to escape.â She smiled a little thinking of how after sheâd ended things with Chryson how Theodore seemed to be everywhere she was. She saw more of the elder Nott after ending her relationship with his son than the entirety of their year long relationship. âI could lie and say it gets easier but when you love someone- truly love someone you donât ever get over it.â
5. Your character walking in on mine waking from a nightmare.
This got really fucking long I apologise for nothing
Valentine hated falling asleep in strange places. She couldnât always guarantee that she wasnât going to have a nightmare- something that seemed to happen with more and more regularity since the war began. She didnât really have a choice but to join her darling husband at the Yaxley Manor, though she was more than certain everyone would have preferred if the mudblood had stayed home. Several hours of forced polite conversation later and Valentine found herself excusing herself from her husbandâs side.
It was incredible how she practically became invisible once she was no longer on Dorianâs arm. As if being out of sight of her husband suddenly made her Valentine Lexington and not Valentine Avery. Just this once though, Valentine didnât mind. The fewer people who looked at her or got into a forced polite conversation the better. She was drained from pretending to smile, pretending that she didnât hear the whispers or see the looks people threw her way when they thought she wasnât paying attention. She saw and heard everything though and while she kept her head up high the words and looks cut deeper than they would ever know.
Almost as if her feet had a mind of their own, Valentine found herself in a part of the house she was almost certain no one was supposed to be in. Hesitantly, Valentine reached forward and turned the handle to Leviâs bedroom finding it thankfully empty. Sheâd been in here once before sheâd just disappeared from Leviâs life but it looked exactly the same as she remembered. Crossing the room, Valentine sat on the edge of Leviâs bed trying to remember a time when sheâd been happier. When sheâd so naively believed that marrying into a Pureblood family didnât mean making herself miserable every day- every moment -of her life. Sighing she let herself fall back and before she knew it she was a sleep.
It started like it always did. Valentine was standing in the middle of Knockturn Alley. The streets were empty but since the attack there the streets were always empty now. It was disconcerting seeing the terror behind the eyes of the family sheâd married into. Theyâd always been so strong, so sure of their path, but since Averyâs attack they were all too keen to keep their cards close to their chest and be wary of everyone. It made trying to get close to them difficult. They looked at her as if sheâd had something to do with the attack. As if she would have sided with the Blood Thieves. No. Not after they almost took Chryson away from her. She wanted the Blood Thieves gone almost as badly is they did.Â
Sheâd blink and then the scenery would change. Sheâd be hidden in an alcove down the Alley her heart beating far too loudly as spells and hexes few around her. Sheâd close her eyes wishing to wake up. It was a dream. It couldnât be a memory because Valentine had been safe at home during the time of the attack. She had been berating house elves and planning dinners and book club menus and meetings while Chryson and Avery were being attacked, and tortured, and forever changed just because they were purebloods.
Like always though instead of waking up when she opened her eyes sheâd still be in the dream. This was the part she dreaded. The part where the only man sheâd ever loved would be standing in front of her and sheâd have no control over what happened next. Her body would move, in her right hand sheâd raise her wand to Chryson. Sheâd be screaming at herself to not do it but her own dead eyes would stare back at her and once the wand was level with Chrysonâs chest the dream would change again and sheâd be holding a gun. Sheâd beg and scream and cry but nothing would stop the bullet from leaving the gun and striking Chryson. Sheâd watch him fall and gasp for help, his blood staining the cobblestones. Then sheâd raise her hand again, a wand this time, and the killing curse would leave her lips-âNO!â Sheâd shoot up screaming, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her chest heaving as she felt the soft comforter under her fingertips. Even in the dark she knew she was not at home in her bed. Before her mind could stop racing with the nightmare that plagued her sleep the door to the room slammed open and the lights came on too quickly.
âWhat the fuck are you doing here?â
She knew that voice. Brushing the tears off her cheeks and composing herself as much as she could Valentine looked in the doorway to see the first boy whoâs heart sheâd broken. âWhat does it look like Iâm doing?â She asked with none of the usual biting sarcasm in her voice. It was difficult to conjure that up when she was still so shaken from her nightmare.
âYou know what I donât even fucking care. Just get out. Now.â
Sliding off the bed Valentine rolled her eyes a little bit, feeling her heartbeat return to normal, feeling herself able to build up her walls again be the bitch Levi thought she was. She fixed her hair and straightened out her dress before looking at Levi who had crossed to the opposite end of the room and was pointedly not looking at her. Smirking a little she walked to the doorway and paused, looking over her shoulder at Levi. âCould you imagine what people would say if they knew Iâd been in your bed? That weâd been alone together in your room?â She asked with a lilt to her voice before giggling and walking back towards the party. It was better if Levi hated her. He deserved to be happy.

âI grew up with a single mum. Never even met my dad. My mum married an Irish prick when I was four, but he never really treated me like I was his kid. My magic showed up when I was eleven and when he found out about magic he kicked us out.â Alix fidgeted with her hands, dropping her gaze down to her lap. While Brennan knew the general gist of her life, sheâd never really spoken to him about it. Or to anyone for that matter. It was just what happened, nothing more, nothing less. âIn Ireland we lived in a nice house, though not as nice as this one. When we moved back to France we moved into a little one room apartment. When I was home on breaks I slept in the bedroom while Mama slept on a little sleeper couch. It wasnât much, but it was a home.â
She shrugged, looking back up at Valentine. âI donât know how much there is to talk about. He had a nightmare. I pushed him to find out what it was about and in pushing learned some nasty things about him. And I realized that even though I love Brennan, I donât want any part in the mess heâs gotten himself involved in.â
Valentine kept her face as neutral as possible while Alix told her about her childhood. While she didnât know the other girl very well but she did know that she probably didnât want any pity. âHow did you get your magic to suppress itself for so long?â Valentine asked before she could stop herself. She was genuinely curious since Haven showed her magic at seven, Valentine a year later and Avalon shortly after. For Alix to go so long without showing her magic was an oddity. âI started showing magic when I was seven. Haven, my older sister, had already been showing magic too by this point. My parents were afraid of what everyone would say so one night they packed up all of our things and moved us to London. Far from anyone who knew them or us. Where they could home school us and give us private tutors who wouldnât breathe a word of the things we could do. My parents did the best they could but theyâre muggles.â She shrugged.
âIâm sorry to hear that. Leaving the person you love is never easy... trust me. You get reminded of what you lost every day.â She said her voice soft. She wanted to help Alix. She didnât want the brunette to make the same mistake she had. She didnât want Alix to lose love. She didnât want Alix to be as miserable as she was. Though she doubted anyone could be as miserable as she was. No one else chose to lose the only person they loved and then turned around to marry someone they could never love. Someone who was everything she thought she wanted until Chryson changed everything she thought she wanted.
Persephoneâs eyes flicked over the edge of her glass to look at the blond, eyebrow arching slightly at the sight of her observing the bartender. If she were honest, Persephone could see what Valentine had meant about him earlier - he probably didnât know better. And while the thought was irritating, she simply stored it away for late - for when she could warn her father or brother.
Though she was grateful at the idea, she still found her nose crinkling. âAdmittedly, I did have a few flings with muggles while traveling. Donât get me wrong - theyâre wonderful but when it comes to shagging you always run the risk of⊠liking someone more then you intend and I donât think I could hide such a big part of me from someone.â Magic meant everything to her. âUnless you plan on spilling some dark secrets, I canât see us needed to relocate - if anything the⊠vibrant scenery will give us all the more to talk about, no?â
Valentine tore her eyes away from the bartender. If she stared at him for any longer sheâd wind up hexing him in front of the entire bar and that wouldnât do well at all. Plus when she had such an ally as Persephone sat across from her, her attention should be divided. Turning her head towards Persephone, Valentine smiled at the brunette before taking a drink from her glass.
âDepending on the muggle you wouldnât have to hide your magic.â Valentine smiled a bit thinking of how her parents loved their daughters despite living in a completely different world than them. How they supported their daughters even though the eldest two pushed them away in search of what they thought they wanted. Something Valentine wasnât so certain she wanted anymore. âDark secrets arenât a thing I keep my dear. So yes I suppose we can have a colourful conversation here.â
rhea looked at valentine, surprise lining her face. it dawned on her that she hadnât learned everything there was to know about the other girl in the single conversation. rhea hadnât expected her to drop their formalities so quickly, but she didnât miss a beat, giving her a rueful smile. âsorry. iâm not really used to people just talking like normal people.â she explained with an innocent smile.
Valentine smiled before motioning for Rhea to follow her into the parlour. If the two girls were going to be friends they had to stop acting so formal with each other. âNo I donât suppose either of us are used to speaking with anyone who didnât have ulterior motives or to whom we didnât have ulterior motives towards.â She smiled before taking a seat. âDid you want anything to drink Rhea?â
