Harry Potter Meme: ♕ Four Locations
4/4 The Whomping Willow
Things in Harry Potter that will never make sense
wizard children need their parents signed permission to go to perfectly safe village full of candy shops next to the school but not to enter a tournament in which you can most definitely die
it’s very similar to how kids can join the military without a parent’s permission once they’re 18, but (at least at my high school) they need it for a student to check out of school if they’re sick or for certain field trips
the tournament is dangerous, yes, but there’s a lot of respect for those involved and quite a prideful hysteria surrounding it (sound familiar?). I’ve never heard of a kid wanting to join the military who wasn’t bombarded with praise.
I guess the only difference is that in the Wizarding World the age of Majority is 17 instead of 18
It is the quality of one’s convictions that determines success, not the number of followers.
“Look what he asked from me, Hermione! Risk your life, Harry! And again! And again! And don’t expect me to explain everything, just trust me blindly, trust that I know what I’m doing, trust me even though I don’t trust you!”
Voldemort: *is rebirthed* Voldemort: Robe me. Voldemort is Coldemort.
Personally I’m kind of upset that the Weasley twins weren’t Slytherins. It fits perfectly. Cunning, ambitious, charming. Not to say that they weren’t brave and daring too but they fit the profile of a Slytherin perfectly. They were even pureblood.
Like imagine how differently the books would have gone if they’d shown non “evil” Slytherins running around. And the twins could have made Malfoy’s life a living hell for Harry. And just… idk. I just have a lot of feelings about this.
I had never considered this and now I’m kind of upset
Flourish
Just a short drabble for Jily Valentineâs Week. It only veryloosely fits the Bookstore AU requirements but I donât really care. Because sometimes I like to pretend my cuties never died and Harry lived a normal, happy life.
âOh, for Circeâs sake, Harry. Keep up,â Lily demanded as they navigated through the crowded street of Diagon Alley. She had never seen the place so crowded before and it was starting to make her nervous.
âYou better listen to you mother,â James said and although she couldnât see his face, Lily knew he was smirking. The git. âYou wouldnât want her to hold your hand, would you?â
Harry, who had been too busy searching for his best friend, Ron Weasley, snapped his gaze to the back of his motherâs head. He wouldnât put it past the woman to humiliate him like that so he hastened to catch up to her.
âThereâs a good lad,â James said, slapping his sonâs back.
âWhyâs it so crowded,â Harry asked as he dodged another giggling teenage girl.
âIâm not sure,â Lily said. She looped her arm through Jamesâ, feeling much more relaxed now that she had an eye on her entire family. âMaybe thereâsâ¦â she trailed off when they reached Flourish and Blottâs. Grinning and winking down at them was a giant poster of Gilderoy Lockhart.
âYouâve got to be kidding me,â Lily said flatly.
âAw, did we really go school shopping the same day that ponce decided to have a book signing?â James whined as they pushed through the busy bookstore.
âMrs. Weasley fancies him,â Harry said. The corners of his mouth twitched upwards, trying his best to keep his teasing off his face.
The three of them watched as Lockhart strutted around the back of the building, making extravagant flourishes with his arms as he posed for the cameras. Lily and James were horrified when the man made the announcement that he would be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
Ignoring the comically large peacock quill Lockhart pulled out of his robes, James turned to Harry and said, âHarry, your mother and I will not hold you accountable for any detentions you get for tormenting your Defense professor this year.â
âStop it, James,â Lily scolded, lightly hitting her husbandâs shoulder. Her eyes flashed dangerously. âOur son knows better than to get caught.â
The book version always gave me goosebumps..
WOULD IT HAVE BEEN SO FUCKING HARD TO HAVE RUPERT DO THIS SCENE THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED? EVEN JUST A LITTLE BIT? AT LEAST ONE SHOUT OF HER FUCKING NAME WOULD’VE BEEN NICE. LITERALLY MY #1 PROBLEM WITH ALL THE MOVIES IS THIS SCENE RIGHT HERE.
I just wrote an essay in response to this, posted it… and my tumblr app ate it. I almost cried. Let’s try this again..
Ok, so, honestly… these films left out so much emotional weight, it is crazy. Now, I love me an HP film. Like, I really, really love them. But wow.
Reading Deathly Hallows was an experience I can’t even really properly describe. The missing!Ron section before The Silver Doe just about killed me. I literally felt like… a tightness in my chest, waiting for him to come back. It was actually physically difficult for me to concentrate and read the story in between his leaving and returning. “Are - you - mental?” was the greatest chunk of text I had ever seen. I literally started screaming and probably sobbing. It was all a blur.
Then, Malfoy Manor.
Let me just tell you. That chapter DESTROYED me. Yes, the circumstances at the manor were terrifying. Yes, the bit where Draco gets wishy-washy on Harry’s identity was INTENSE. But then, Hermione is separated from them and Ron shouts (without stopping to think about it) to take her place. He knows she’s about to be in for some legit hell. He doesn’t give a shit. He’s ready to take it. By the time he gets to the dungeon (honestly, I think it’s even before she’s screaming), he’s basically lost all control. He gives exactly zero fucks who hears him sobbing her name. He doesn’t care about his safety, sanity, or even effing physics. He literally tries to teleport himself out of the room… without magic.
That is clearly the most badass, unbelievable, two-billion-teaspoon-range-of-emotion thing I’ve ever heard…
Not to mention how much he obviously loves her. And you know what I’ve just realized? Everybody who heard him screaming like that knows he loves her. He doesn’t even need to tell her that. Dude, I’ve actually got to stop writing about him saying it after the war, in fanfic, because if she heard him screaming, she knows.
But guys, breaking it down, I think anything said about Ron is too short. I could write a thesis paper on how I feel about him…
Rupert is amazing, and I love him so much, but somebody should have given him Ron to play. I don’t understand why someone didn’t pause and go “wait, we’ve left out ‘you can have me, keep me!’ and ‘I get it. You choose him.’ is way better dialogue and way less immature than ‘I saw you the other night’… and Harry’s got to say ‘I thought you knew,’ so that Ron will know!”
I know it’s a translation from page to screen, and of course you can’t expect a 2.5 hour film adaptation (or even two of them) to deliver the emotional heft of a 700 page novel. But I honestly feel like they could have added 60% more accurate Ron to Deathly Hallows by letting him scream, by making Harry assure him that the locket nightmare was bogus, and by letting him apparate away from the manor with Hermione… ALONE.
That last one is weird, but I have been thinking about it a lot. He finally gets to her, and she’s basically half-dead in his arms. Honestly? He’s getting the hell out of there. He’s not going to wait around. I understand they probably wanted Dobby to have a nice moment, in the film, but Ron and Hermione should have been gone for it. From the moment she left his sight, he had one goal in mind, and that was to get her out of there, at all costs. Not to mention the slight undermining I feel in the way Ron’s got to hold onto Dobby when they leave. Apparating is really hard, right? People splinch all the time and lose legs and shit. But Ron does it (successfully), with Hermione, WITH SOMEONE ELSE’S WAND, while he’s rolling at about 11/10 emotional distress.
Badass.
Thinking on the books gets my heart racing, for real. It really, honestly, distresses me when people watch the films and haven’t read the books. They don’t know Ron. I wish they understood - I need them to understand.
There is a beautiful, whole person in those books, and he has my soul.
