day 1, november 1st - hello, november!

i’m starting off the first crisp morning of november with a salted caramel mocha and an interview with one of my professors for my research paper! i’m like, a real College Adult

the verse of the day today is 2 Corinthians 10:5, which says ‘casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought captive into the obedience of Christ’, and when i read that this morning, i got so happy because that’s exactly what i’m doing with this paper! if you’re ever lost, remember that God will guide you in everything! i really think that He’s been leading me to this paper since last semester and now i’m beginning to see it into fruition and i’m loving every second of the research and writing!

At some point growing stopped being painful and started to become interesting. I’m so curious about the girl punching her way out of me: dirt under her fingernails, lightning in her eyes. St. Jude has never been called upon to save her.  She looks like she has smashed into starlight and I am probably in love with her. I have always avoided knowledge of myself, documentation of my growth. I am not accomplished   at looking back over myself like a sprawling landscape. There are certain things that I am aware I must have lived through but I don’t remember the emergence of this girl.   I couldn’t tell you what circumstances shaped her. Maybe none. Maybe she was just biding her time, like people so often do. I never know what she is going to do next; the hair she will cut off without a moment’s thought, the notes she will leave behind in coffee shops wishing the barista a lovely day. She wants to read everything, know the story of how her parents fell in love, follow the lines of her blood back to the other side of the continent. She holds certain convictions firmly in her hand, like religion: you must always have a fresh bunch of flowers in your bedroom, you must allow yourself to outgrow and depart from certain eras of your life with a gentle sort of ruthlessness, you must learn to recognise important poetry. I follow her rules. I find that I like them. This girl of the earth, with her knowledge of full moons and fists full of survival stories, is going to change everything.  ‘Don’t go,’ I tell her. ‘I will follow you anywhere.’

good morning ☀️ here’s an example of how I colour code notes: pink for key information, yellow for citations and references and blue for case studies. 📓 I used this method for all of my uni notes (which I always highlighted after class, I NEVER re-write notes). This makes it so easy for you know exactly what information you have in your notes! #theorganisedstudent

Did anyone ever call you a tenderfoot and you got this weird feeling inside knowing that you’re actually hiding the fact that you’re a chicken tenderfoot?

All his young life, Jason was teased on the playground. The kids would inevitably ask, “So Jason, do you have an innie, or an outtie?” His face would turn bright red, his eyes would swell with tears, and he’d pull his shirt as far down as possible so they couldn’t lift it up on him, and he’d run away sobbing. It was torment. Until one day, years later, in high school, and after a bunch of Kyle XY episodes to help him get there, he decided enough was enough. Those same bullies still hung out together 10 years later, so Jason walked up to their little group at lunch time. One of them laughed and said, “If it isn’t little Jason No-Belly-Button. What’s the matter weirdo? Afraid of your stomach again?” Jason just stood their quietly. Then smiled. Then slowly pulled his shirt up to reveal the pancake goblin that protruded from his abdomen. The kids were mostly confused at first. But then the pancakes spoke: “No. But you should be,” and then began to maniacally laugh. They all ran as quick as they could, dropping their book bags and lunches, crying for years to come, haunted by the sight. Jason chuckled, pulled out a tiny bottle of syrup and fed his parasitic friend, and walked away satisfied. Revenge is a meal best served on the abs.
