Hi, I'm in currently in grade 10 and I'm applying to UWC this year through the Canadian national committee. I've always wanted to go to a UWC college, but I heard that its harder to get in if you apply in grade 10 instead of 11. I go to an IB school and we start DP1 in grade 11 and my parents won't let me repeat first year of IB somewhere else, which means I won't be able to go unless I'm accepted in grade 10. I was wondering if you had applied in grade 10 or have any advice for applying.

Hi, sorry if I didn’t answer right away, life’s been pretty busy here but I’m always glad to answer questions! Personally, I didn’t have the option to apply in grade 10 as Québec’s school system is slightly different from the rest of Canada. We graduate in grade 11 instead of 12 but have two extra years in Cégep before university (which fits perfectly with UWC). 

As far as I understand, it is possible to apply in grade 10 if you’re from any other province than Québec (and you can even apply again in grade 11). Although it may seem like the “norm” to apply in grade 11, a lot of people don’t fit into it here. It’s not so rare to be either a year younger or older (sometimes more) and it really doesn’t change anything. So if I was you, I would totally give it a try this year! Yet, if you feel worried about applying a year “earlier”, I would try to talk to your parents about applying in grade 11 as well. I know that a few people come to Pearson having done a year of IB already and that would probably lessen your stress about the application. As for the application itself, I know that it’s one advice that you’ll hear rather often but try to be yourself as much as possible. It’s such a common advice for UWC but also such an important one because even if you successfully get in without being yourself, you won’t be as successful trying to fit into the environment. So really, if there’s one thing you need to keep in mind it’s to be yourself. On the more practical side, I would suggest to work on your application early because it can be very stressful otherwise (honestly, my most stressful moment in life was trying to submit my application at 2:58 am - the deadline being 3:00 am - and having a technical issue). Also, try to seek help around you if you feel like it could be helpful. I remember that my school’s guidance counselor and a few teachers gave me some good advices when applying (there’s even one that had applied to UWC!)I really hope that this can help you somehow and please keep my updated on your process! Une introduction

Comme tous ou presque le savent déjà (il y en a toujours des surpris), j’ai été acceptée dans le programme des Collèges du Monde Uni (mieux connus en anglais comme UWC ou United World Colleges). En très très bref, ce programme regroupe quinze collèges à travers le monde dans lesquels des étudiants de multiples origines se rassemblent pour étudier le baccalauréat international pendant 2 ans (oui oui, ça va me faire 7 ans d’ib). Dans mon cas, j’ai été choisie pour aller au Collège Lester B. Pearson du Pacifique - Pearson pour les intimes - qui se trouve sur l’île de Vancouver en Colombie-Britannique.

Avoir un blogue est pratiquement une tradition à UWC et les nombreux qui existent m’ont beaucoup aidé lors du long et rigoureux processus d’application. Que ce soit pour répondre à mes nombreuses questions et inquiétudes ou tout simplement encore pour démontrer à mes parents que ceci n’est pas une secte (malgré ce qu’on en dit). Justement, les blogues de voyages sont devenus une tradition dans ma famille et ils sont un moyen efficace de laisser savoir aux parents poules qu’on est toujours vivants, voire entrain d’avoir du fun. 

Donc, c’est ici que pour les deux prochaines années (ça fait bizarre à dire), je vais partager mon expérience à “l’étranger”. Ceci n’est pas mon échappatoire pour ne plus avoir de contact avec le Québec, loin de là. Ça sera juste ma façon de partager ma vie quotidienne sans “gosser” tout le monde sur Facebook. Comme j’ai dit, je compte aussi partager plus d’informations sur UWC, Pearson et le processus d’application pour aider les autres comme on m’a aidé. Et puis, soyons honnêtes, je veux le tumblr fame. 

Pour me garder saine d’esprit, ce blogue sera majoritairement en français. Par contre, en véritable Canadienne, il y aura quelques trucs bilingues.
