Johnny -- no, Jim --- fuck, what was this guy’s name? --- her date, who online had referred to himself as Buster (that should’ve been a red flag, honestly) was now exchanging looks between her and Charlie, seemingly offended he’d been both ignored and cut off. His eyes seemed expectant, like he was waiting for an explanation, or an introduction, but she could give neither. “Hey, Charlie. You, uh. Got some...” reaching for Charlie’s hair, she pulled out a piece of lettuce and flicked it onto her tray. “There ya go. Uh, yeah, Charlie, this is...” wincing, she willed desperately for a name to appear in her mind so she wouldn’t have to say my friend. Luckily, good ole Buster was reliably egotistical and insisted on introducing himself with a handshake. “...James.” He nodded, and Jess felt her cheeks flare up. “Yeah, James. And James, this is Charlie. You here to grab a burrito bowl to go or something?” Back when they were dating, this used to be one of their favorite places to grab takeout. It was close to campus, but not so close that they ate there too much out of convenience and got sick of the place. And the food was pretty good, too.
