Ethel Cain being accused of "flashing" people for posting (very tasteful) nude pictures of herself is such silly transmisogyny. This isn't the first time I've seen this happen to a transfem musician. When Patricia Taxxon was being harassed off the site, she was accused by her harassers/stalkers of "e-flashing" for posting nudes of herself on her twitter. One woman's music is more popular than the other, but same transmisogynistic tactics is used against both.

It's such a ridiculous argument. It's clearly rooted in transmisogyny, painting transfems as predatory for actions that clearly aren't. And it's based in the idea that transfem bodies are so disgusting that cis people just seeing them uncovered is a violation, which is common to the changing room "debate."

Also calling posting nudes to your own social media account "flashing" for this frankly minimizes the actual act of sexual harassment that word refers to. When a man actually flashes a woman in meatspace, it's a serious, frightening situation for the woman where the man being a creep constitutes an actual physical threat. Comparing that to a woman posting a nude picture of herself on her own social media account is an absurd and deeply offensive comparison.

I think something missing in the wider discussion about the disproportionate banning and flagging of transfem blogs on this website is the economic incentive. Usually, these discussions are framed as the personal bigotry of staff, of rogue tumblr employees getting a carte blanche to go after trans women they dislike. And to be sure, that is at play! But it’s not the whole story.

Every time tumblr implements some wildly unpopular and unnecessary update to make the website function more like twitter, they do so with the justification that they need to attract new users to the website to stay financially viable. To that end, they make changes that are unwanted by the existing user base to try and emulate the features of other, more financially successful social media platforms. They do this routinely without much regard for how it disrupts the existing functionality and culture of the platform.

I think we need to look at the targeting of transfems through this same lens. Despite all the animosity we face here from users and staff alike, tumblr is one of the few public forums around with this many open and proud transfem users, and it is genuinely a center of transfem culture on the internet. That is something that cannot be said of more financially solvent platforms like twitter and instagram (at least in proportion to the platforms’ overall user bases), whose success tumblr wants to chase. Here, we get into some really uncomfortable economics. There are far more people on the open internet (that tumblr might consider potential new users) who are disgusted by transfems and our culture than there are transfems. Many advertisers see a large presence of transfems as a liability and a risk that they don’t want to associate with their brands. These are the people tumblr wants to attract to the site regardless of how it impacts current users and communities. It’s not just staff being bigoted — it is a company trying to cater to the bigotry of society on a much larger level.

In short, we keep the rent low. Of course tumblr, a company trying to become profitable, wants to evict us.
