spoiler review/rant of “tall girl” (2019)
Jodi, the tallest girl in her high school, has always felt uncomfortable in her own skin. But after years of slouching, being made fun of, and avoiding attention at all costs, Jodi finally decides to find the confidence to stand tall.
I believe the movie only works in America, since everyone is seemingly so short there, because a girl that’s 6′1 isn’t odd. At all. Go to western Europe and legit every fucking girl is tall and white - you’re not special, sister. She acts like it’s this world stopping problem but… it’s not. I’m not saying her insecurities are invalid, but it would’ve been a more interesting story if it revolved around a girl with actual adversities, like a blind or deaf girl, or a girl in a wheelchair. Being tall means shit.
Secondly, I’m glad that Stig and Jodi didn’t end up together in the end, but I also think that Jodi didn’t deserve Jack (Dunkleman). Like yeah, he stood on his crate in the end to kiss her properly, but he’s still short, and that clearly wasn’t her thing. Also a bad look if she only gains interest after he proves himself worthy of her attention by physically fighting for her. He shouldn’t have to do that. I had hoped he would’ve lost interest because she’s a bad friend and stayed with Liz (or just alone, if needed. Liz and him were adorable though - they’d make a better movie too. Better actors in my opinion.).
Thirdly, to continue what I wrote in parentheses: everyone was far more interesting than Tall Blond Viking and Tall Blonde Special Snowflake. Liz actually building a connection with Jack, Fareeka and her aspiration to become a fashion designer and, incidentally, hurting her parents with that dream. Harper and her pageant lifestyle. Her father’s devotion to make Jodi’s life better.
I hated how one dimensional our villain was. Kimmy’s personality is just: Insecure Mean Girl. That’s it. That’s everything you need to know.
Also, that fucking speech at the end… no one would care. No one would give a single fuck about how she likes herself now and that she can play the piano. The “be yourself” speech has been played a hundred times, we didn’t need number hundred and one.
What I liked was: the use of colour, when Jack gave Jodi the shoes and told this whole story around it, any Jack x Liz scenes, Fareeka’s introduction (albeit a little stereotypical to make her the black best friend that for some reason no one is interested in even though she’s awesome and knows it), the tall woman saying “being tall sucks” and any scene with Sabrina Carpenter.
If you want to take anything from this movie, is that you should keep an eye out for Anjelika Washington (Fareeka) because I’m certain she’ll become a star! Also Griffin Gluck (Dunkleman) was an amazing actor too.
