✯ “Urrrrrgh, and then there’s that! You never remember the previous times that happens! It’s… it’s so gosh dang frustrating!” She kicks a small rock to the side. Tears are starting to form at her eyes, and not exactly from a happy place. She’d rather Mia didn’t look at her like this, so she turns her face away.

✯ “By the way…” Once she starts calming herself down, she returns to talking to Mia. “Yes and no. There are difficulties for channeling spirits here, both because we’re stripped of our powers upon arrival here and because death is not permanent in this city, so there’re almost no spirits to channel to begin with.”

✯ “However…” She takes a deep breath. “You’re not being channeled right now, Mia. The scientists… t-they can bring people back to life. …You’re alive, Sis.”

Mia could see that Maya was frustrated, but she didn’t have an answer- and she couldn’t really think of one either. However, none of that could’ve prepared her for the pure shock that she felt when Maya continued to speak.

“I’m.... alive?”

That wasn’t possible- she had died. She could remember her own death quite clearly, actually- and yet, Maya had no reason to lie. And she didn’t think that she would lie, certainly not about this.

“But- that isn’t possible, is it? What about Pearl, then?” Was she actually alive right now? This was... her? It was a complicated thing to react to- the knowledge that she had more time to exist was something good, but... surely, something like this wouldn’t last forever. And coming back to life would only hold people back from being able to move on... what a difficult thing to react to, indeed.

While Mia hadn’t ever formally finished her training as a spirit medium, that didn’t mean she was unfamiliar with the traditions and culture of her hometown, and subsequently the kingdom of Khura’in from which their abilities of channeling had originated. As such, she couldn’t help but wonder when she saw the other’s style of dress- were they Khura’inese? Or, perhaps there were other places that had cultures similar to that kingdom’s. It was always possible, and she knew better than to presume what was or wasn’t possible. After all- she was technically dead.

“Oh- I’m sorry, I was staring, wasn’t I?” She realized she’d caught their eye by accident, apologizing quickly for the rudeness. “My name is Mia Fey- your clothing reminded me somewhat of a country from where I’m from.”

Dhurke is at a complete loss now. His time here is quickly coming to an end, he’s sure; it won’t be long before the Twilight Realm beckons him back. And he has accomplished absolutely nothing in the past two days, aside from discovering Nahyuta’s resentment (but really, that doesn’t count).

His eye catches on a passerby as they pass each other on the street, and he recognizes the item around her neck. It’s enough to make him turn in place and seek her attention. “Excuse me, miss–” he calls out to her with his hand slightly raised, displaying the dragon upon his palm. Dhurke places his fingers on top of the attorney’s badge he wears at the base of his neck, to indicate what he wishes to ask her about. “That’s a Magatama around your neck, isn’t it? Are you… a spirit medium?” He really hopes the answer is yes; maybe she’ll be able to help him unravel his own situation with its mystery channeler and the anonymous requester.

Now, that wasn’t something Mia had expected to be recognized for. It was true she wore her magatama- even after leaving her home, Kurain village was still important to her. She’d found she couldn’t just leave that behind- so instead she’d removed the beads that she’d used to wear with the magatama. A little thing, but it’d held a meaning enough to her.

“Yes, I suppose by training- but by profession, I’m a lawyer.” Mia smiled lightly, a little curious about why he’d be asking. Although... would she even really be able to channel a spirit anymore, if she was technically dead? There was a question she really didn’t know if she could answer. “Why did you want to know?”

“What the hell.....” Ah yes. Now she can truly be a citizen of Hive City, she’s witnessed... one of those days.

✯ “Sis?” Could it be? Mia was… in this city once again? Ah… the ache in her chest is always the same whenever this happens. She wants to rush to her, hug her-

✯ Exceeeept she holds herself this time.

✯ “Wait, time out here. Before I allow myself to break into ugly sobbing and affection, I must make sure that you won’t just go away like it always happens here. You find me, I start crying and calling you, then you don’t reply and end up being sent home by the scientists and I feel down for days, only feeling like eating ice cream and Chinese takeout. That has already happened what, 3 or 4 times by now?!”

✯ Seriously, it’s kinda hard falling into the emotional tropes when this crap keeps happening.

“M-Maya? What.. are you talking about?” Mia blinked, unsure of what her sister could be talking about. Did Pearl have trouble channeling her here, or something like that? Was something interfering with her spiritual power? That seemed unlikely, so Maya’s reaction was worrying.

And of course- there was the nagging guilt at the back of her mind over when she’d left Kurain all that time ago, but she didn’t think that was what Maya was talking about. Or at least, she hoped not.

“Is there something that makes it difficult to channel spirits here? I.. don’t remember what you’re talking about, though.” If she had been here before, and only so intermittently, she could see why Maya would be hurt. Still though... she was already dead. Even with the powers of spirit channeling, she wasn’t supposed to be in this world for long, and making the medium who channeled her do so for too long wasn’t something Mia would let happen. She couldn’t force that burden onto Pearl (or at least, she continued to assume it was Pearl), not when her time in this world had ended.
