breath is held at the question. a little white lie wouldn’t hurt, but it wasn’t the route she wanted to take. when she was going through the same thing, she wanted to be told that she wasn’t the only one -- scared of the things that only her mind could produce. reluctantly, she nods slowly.  “ yeah. ” it’s nearly whispered, but a soft smile is given.

her daughter is pulled close as soon as possible. steve was still out, but even for mary, steve would have to sleep on the couch. this was an emergency mother-daughter moment. in fact, it reminded herself of the many nightmares she would have, both as she was young and currently. it’s why she was always awake and accessible. mary’s hair is softly stroked and an inviting sigh is let out. “ do you want to TALK about it? ”

Aches because he’d left behind a King without a father ultimately because of them. But these are his problems, NOT what he intends to load on others’ shoulders.

Even if Natasha had always been EXPERT at picking him apart. He offers her a tired smile, and his own shoulders sag lightly. “ Trying to stay out of everybody’s hair. Seems like everybody’s just about as fine as they can be. I wish it could be MORE. ”

it’s odd, but it feels more than necessary. steve sometimes had this look of a lost puppy, and it really made her feel terrible, a hand goes to his cheek.

“ you’re lying. and you know i know that. ” a sigh is let out, nails softly declining down his cheek only to caress it more. he had to, by now, be used to her sudden affection. yet, it was more of a tactic to catch his attention. when it was on her, the hand drops and rests on his shoulder

“ i know.... i know all of it is bothering you, you know. it wouldn’t be in your nature for it not to. ”
