"Bother me all you want. I like to be bothered. It makes my days different, breaks the routines and so. But if you are going to bother me a lot, you really need to teach me sign language. I need to learn more of it and it would be great to be able to communicate with you and the others with something they can ‘hear’ too."

"ASL can be pretty difficult. Like any other language, it takes years before you can be considered 'good' at it. But I can give you a good head start, at least."

"So. Tell me more about this Christmas play. Auditions still open?"

"Do you want me to show you around?"

"If you would agree, I would agree."

“….You were adopted too? What are you, perfect or something?”

"I don't know about 'perfect' but yeah, I was adopted too. Is that so weird?"

“I wouldn’t know if it runs in my family or not….”

"Well, considering I was adopted, it's only a conjecture on my part."

“My older sister is deaf but my mom and dad aren’t…sometimes I think they are though….they never listen...”

"I'm the only Deaf one in my family. Spinal meningitis, when I was five, so it isn't genetic or anything."

"Aw, cute. I'm not so great with kids, but I do think they're adorable. When they aren't being unholy terrors, that is."

“I don’t know what that is but I have a daughter whose partially deaf so I thought teaching her sign language from childhood would be good in case her hearing goes as she ages…"

"CODA stands for 'Child of Deaf Adult'. But that's a good idea. Speaking purely from experience, trying to force a Deaf kid into a hearing mold always ends badly. How old is she?"

"Oh! And then we have Thomas. He’s not deaf, but he knows how to sign. But if you ever need anything, the door to my classroom, office and apartment is always open. And I literally meat always. I don’t keep the doors locked, and I’m always in one of those three places, so if I’m not at the first place, check the second or third."

"I met him, yeah. Thanks. I'll probably end up bothering you for something somehwere down the line. Practically guaranteed."

"I know how to sign by the way, if that’s easier…."

"You do? Shit, yes please." Without waiting for a reply, Moses went on, switching seamlessly into ASL. "Are you CODA or something?"

"Oh, we have few, not just one. But I was thinking about Owen. He’s a really great kid. Though so are everyone else in here." There was again the Noah who just liked and loved everyone. "Alright. I can do that. But still, if I talk too much nonsense, just let me know."

"The play is called Santa and the Wicked Wazoo. Or well, I might change the name of it if it starts to feel a bit weird, but in all simplicity it tells a story that in the end only thing that matters is being yourself.”

"Owen, huh? I'll keep that in mind. This is the first time I've been to a hearing school since elementary, so it's kind of a culture shock. But I'll adapt."

"Aww. That sounds embarrassingly cute."

"You look a little too old to be in high school. I’m assuming, college?"

"Yeah, I just started college, but I started kind of late. Grandpa Freshman, that's me."

"I understand the feeling. But we do have another deaf student here, so there would be at least one who can sign perfectly. I try to speak slower so it’d be easier for you to read from my lips. Oh, and remember to tell me if I start to ramble too much. I have a habbit of that. Just talk talk talk and talk without me saying anything smart even. So just interrupt me if I keep on talking."

"Well we already started to work with the Christmas play, it’s going to be a big one and there is plenty of work for everyone. None of the roles have been decided yet, so everything is still open from that part."

"Just the one? I'll have to hunt him down sometime. Exercise my Deaf Spidey Senses. But, uh -- don't speak slowly. That distorts the mouth and makes it harder to determine what's being said. Just talk normally. I'll probably get an interpreter anyway, so it doesn't even matter."

"What's the play?"

"Oh my g—- did I offend you by laughing?”

"No! No, it was -- it was a joke. One of Jesus' disciples was called Doubting Thomas. Kind of left-field, but hey. I tried."

"Oh, unfortunately I know only the basics. But feel free to teach me. I always love to know something new. What comes to your question about the map —I can show you around, if you want." Noah just smiled at the boy and gestured with his hand that they should continue their way.

"Oh well. Some's better than none. I mean, obviously I know English too, but I'm more comfortable signing."

"So, what's the theatre course like here?"

"I’m Thomas….."

"Well, in that case, it makes more sense that you're doubting Jesus' mathematical skills. I'm Moses. Preceded Jesus by quite some time."

"No, no no! I’m Noah Smeets", Noah signed his name for the boy, "I’m the theater teacher. I always get the lists of the new students and since there was only one new student coming this week and I haven’t seen you around, so I just counted one plus one and figured out you must be him. So.. Welcome to Long Beach Art School!"

Moses' eyebrows rose to see the teacher sign his name; he started signing as he spoke: "You sign? They didn't tell me that. But -- yeah, that's great. I look forward to your class, Mr. Smeets."
