i wasn’t born deaf so I use my voice almost exclusively, but I know sign :)

Hi, how you doing? I just read your ‘how to write deaf characters’ post and appreciated it very much. I’m curious now though, why are cochlear implants controversial among the Deaf community? Also, how do parents/siblings communicate with their Deaf child if they don’t learn sign language (since you mentioned them not learning it is a common thing)? Thank you in advance for your answers and I apologize if this has been asked before.

So, cochlear implants are just a big no-no in the Deaf community. At least in my experience. Most born and raised Deaf people believe that cochlear implants are the hearing world’s way of eradicating the Deaf population (kinda). Cochlear implants aren’t a cure for deafness because most of the time they don’t even work. Only certain select people can get implants because you still need to have some level of hearing for it to possibly work. But most importantly, Deaf people don’t want to hear. They love being Deaf and don’t want to be ‘fixed’. 

This has also lead to the romanticization of cochlear implants. You always see videos shared on the internet of ‘child hearing mother for the first time’ or whatever. Hearing people cry and proclaim ‘it’s a miracle!’ even though its not. They can’t hear. It’s mechanical and fake. Deaf people looooathe those videos because it makes it seem like being Deaf is a problem when it’s not.
