how about this: when i was 9 and my stepdad beat me until i passed out and i told my friends at school, my teacher over heard and i was interviewed by cps. they also went to my house when i was at school. when i got home, my step father was waiting on the couch, and told me who visited him that day. he told me if i ever snitched again he would beat me to within an inch of my life.

how about this: my mother locked me out of the house when i was 14 and when i cried so loud the neighbors called the cops, the cop told me i should have been respectful of my mother who was trying to sleep.

how about this. the demon you know is less scary than the demon you don’t.

children in abused households are raised to fear the idea of being taken away. children in abusive households see that help makes things worse.

dont you ever blame an abuse victim for not going to the authorities.

At some point, something one of our court-mandated therapists heard (I still don’t know what it was, or which therapist) became concerned and sent a social worker to our house for a scheduled visit (an absolutely laughable concept but I digress.)

My mom and stepdad sat us down and told us that we needed to look like we were having a good time, or the evil bitch social worker was going to have us taken away. For several hours, we all gathered in the living room playing board games, scared out of our minds that we weren’t going to be convincing enough. Or… that we were going to be In Trouble afterward.

She left. Nothing ever came of it, because of course it didn’t. The abuse was happening behind closed doors. My parents weren’t morons. The house was a nightmare for days after that.

I’m sure that lady was doing her best, and that she had seen children in truly horrific situations. Maybe multiple that week. Maybe multiple that day.

But as long as people assume that a) children always know they’re being abused b) children know who to go to for help and c) those people can and will actually help, children will continue to be hurt under the noses of the people who are there to help

Being a fan of female characters in fandom is it's own kind of torture because a guy can be a jerk to just about everyone with one moment where he doesn't and people will grip onto that, but a woman is a little bit rude or has an outburst during high stress and she's scum of the earth.
