hey folks if you have an android phone: google shadow installed a "security app".
Provides safety features for Android devices.
I had to go and delete it myself this morning.
And several others as well. Clear data, disable, uninstall if you can.

Rough estimate: It's possible to reach 1000 boops in less than 2 hours (took me 1:30h), if you got some people to spam it to.
If you are a blog where people can spam boop's to, reblog this.
This is what an evil boop looks like.

I feel like the only person not tempted to use ChatGPT like it doesn't even occur to me as an option
Anyway shoutout to the person next to me who just got GPT to do their whole essay. I know you're in the trenches.
Also, chances are if you use chatGPT for an essay, you’re going to get caught. I’ve heard a whole variety of stories recently of PhD students and lecturers doing marking, realising something was a bit funky with an essay and then with approximately 30 seconds of thought and investigation, realising the student had used chatGPT to write it. And then that student gets sent to whatever that university’s student conduct/plagiarism office is.
chatGPT can write coherent sentences, it may even be able to write a coherent argument. But what it does not do is fact check. It will invent plausible sounding facts. It will invent papers and their conclusions.
The people marking your essays know the correct facts, and if chatGPT picks the name of a prominent researcher in the field to label as the author of one of its invented papers (which it does do) then those people will likely look at that paper and go ‘uuuhhh, that doesn’t seem right’ or ‘wait, when did they collaborate with that person??’ and then do a check of that author’s papers, realise the one ‘you’ cited is fake as hell and add another square to the ‘AI cheating’ bingo.
We are all now getting briefed on the red flags of a chatGPT essay, but even without those briefings, it’s fucking obvious and a waste of everyone’s time because you’re not going to get a good grade even if you luck out and don’t get reported for cheating. Just write your own damn essay. Please.
Gonna add on: it is especially easy to get caught if you are using it for a foreign language class. I've seen students in my Japanese class use it to write papers this semester and it's glaringly obvious because the use of language is extremely polished and professional and sounds absolutely nothing like what an upper intermediate language learner's writing should sound like. You may think you can disguise it, but if you are still at the level where language learning is the primary focus of the course, i guarantee you are not familiar enough with the language and with the idiosyncrasies of the average language learner of your background to adjust the level down. It's like, "i read the first sentence and laugh out loud because it's so absurd to think someone in this point of their japanese study wrote this" level obvious. I know it's tough out there right now but it's really not worth it. Especially in language learning where every level builds on the next level, you are literally just setting yourself up for more stress and pain in the future.
