dark academia is not cigarette trousers and button ups. dark academia is not exclusivley reading homer and virgil. dark academia is a passion for knowledge and learning. so please, dont feel like you arent DA just because you wear jeans embroidered with flowers or pink blouses. DA should be a state of mind before it is an aesthetic. yes, the aesthetics of it are nice but unnecessary. so please dont feel excluded or exclude others just because they dont fit the picture of dark academia that you have in your mind.

My thoughts about DA as a lifestyle

I think that many of us, who are interested in dark academia and academia lifestyle in general are aware about one post, which says that being dark academic doesn’t mean to be like characters in our books or movies like “The Secret History” or “The Dead Poet Society”. That you don’t have to be elitist, snobby, dark and cold like characters in these stories. Well...I don’t think so. Of course, you don’t have to be anything you don’t want to be, but at least for me, it was the thing what truly fascinatinated me about dark academia in the beginning. We all want to be special and that’s the elitism.

I think the difference is between 'wanting to be special' and 'being a pretentious snob that shits down on people for not having the same money/education/possibilities'

but i think this part of the discourse is rooted in the same area as people complaining about DA being a eurocentric aesthetic, as it started out as one.

I am totally on board with making DA more inclusive and less arsehole-y, but I don't think that the way it is currently discussed helps the matter at all.

While I think we can improve how be go about it, i dont think removing everything that basically is DA (academia/university, elitism, tweed,etc) , does not help the issue at all

Yeah ... this feels like pretty deep discourse and I’m not totally comfortable getting involved but I do have an opinion on the matter lol. Don’t get me wrong, when I was in school I probably held a similar opinion and my goals in education were definitely based on a stereotype/false image of what academia is, based on media like the secret history etc. But spending any amount of time at university, really critically thinking about everything that I consume educationally, I can’t really get behind the elitism that op encourages. It’s directly linked to racism, sexism, conservative politics, and classism. The societies and the institutions that most of the big DA media is set in (and therefore takes on the values of) are problematic in the above ways, by excluding minority groups and discouraging inclusivity, all in the name of feeling more elite and getting more opportunities in education/life than minority and oppressed people. To show support of all parts of these books/films etc. without being directly critical of the problematic parts only encourages this elitism in real life academia (which is to say, keeping academia racist, sexist, classist, nepotistic, etc).

I think it’s fine to want to feel special by being smart and capable academically, so I support op in that way completely! Learn as many languages as you can, get top grades, get into your dream university, these are great ambitions! But taking on the exclusive attitudes of characters like Henry Winter from tsh (who is a ,,,,, 😬 criminal ,,,,) doesn’t sit right with me. I just think everyone should be entitled to a great education, without feeling unwelcome because they’re not a rich white man wearing tweed lol.
