Exploring the Valley
South of Bach Ma, west of Da Nang. Old roads take you through some amazing countryside. Too bad they’re installing a monster Highway
Here’s just a sample of all the abandoned buildings I’ve come across. They range from old homes to bunkers, Cham ruins to obsolete AA turret platforms.
Here’s part 2- I found this spectacular waterfall about a 2 hour hike from Tuy Loan Gorge. It was right off the path from part 1 and I can’t believe I missed it the first time.
Here is part 1 of my hiking expedition- 7 hours hiking this is what I found. The wild life was abundant as well. I saw a flock of, what I believe were, green tailed sun birds (about 6-8 flew out of a nearby tree). I saw a huge hawk, countless lizards, and a 3.5 foot snake that was slender, brown, and had a tan jaw (Indochinese rat snake?).
About 5 hours into my hike on an extremely rough trail I hear the pat pat pat of a motorbike approaching. They had baskets on their backs and one had a small machete so I chose to remain hidden. I’d imagine they’d be pretty shocked to see me out there considering it had been at least 3 hours since I saw another human. I cannot figure out how they got a motorbike out there though. The only path crossed water several times and the ground was in no way flat. There were also at least 2 downed trees... Guess we’ll never know.
4 Cove Beach: Part 2
Unsatisfied with three beaches, naturally, I went on the hunt for a fourth. I’m glad I did
4 Cove Beach: Part 1
Fridays adventure took place just under Hai Van Pass. 40 minutes from home and a twenty minute hike down an old cattle road and across the train tracks through some jungle gets you to the first three beaches.
Join me for a nice hot beer. There’s nothing better on a 98 degree summer day.
So after 40 minutes of driving and about an hour's hike I found the secret 4th Cove. There are ruins of a town that was supposedly abandoned for years until ...
Today’s Adventure
A quick ride home from the Vietnamese gents I met near a cave. They insisted that the way I came down was too steep to go back up
Son Tra Water Cave
August 02, 2015
It had been raining for about 2 weeks in Da Nang but today it let up briefly. So after work (around 11:30 am) I announced I’d be going to the Tuy Loan Gorge again, which is one of my favorite spots. However I decided last minute to try something new. I rode out to the Son Tra mountain and inspected a few paths that I had never seen before (by paths I mean cliffs I thought I might survive falling down). I chose one that felt right. I expected to be alone when I arrived due to the ruggedness of the path, however I was pleasantly surprised when the path opened to 3 Vietnamese smoking cigarettes (2 guys and a girl). One was so shocked to see me down there he phantom grabbed for his friend (a couple meters away) whispering yo repeatedly while staring and pointing at me. Since there were two pretty tight rock walls on either side of me I had to kind of tunnel through their area. As I did the one who had not yet blinked offered up his cigarette to me with a questioning “Uhh??” I kindly declined and made my way to the water.
After goggling around (snorkel-less snorkeling??) I found a spectacular cave filled with thousands of fish. After swimming through it a couple of guys were sitting in a circle on a tarp and offered me some beer. Since I had nowhere to be I graciously accepted. We got to chatting (albeit minimally) and it turns out they were on a business outing and had gotten there on their boss’s boat. They had been spear-fishing all day ( a 3kg fish being the highlight of which only the tail was left) and gathering snails.
Having accepted several beers, three different fish, and a bottle of wine from Chile I was inclined to accept a ride home on their boat as well.
