the feminine urge to overcome competition set upon young women and learn to support other girls
thinking about the whole "slut with a heart of gold" scene and how it's more than just carol mad nancy upset steve
barb had said that tommy and carol were "doing it" since the 7th(?) grade (which is fucked that so early on in her life she was sexualized by those around her (it's simply not true her and tommy had sex that early)) so carol already has this label of "fast" which at the age of what 13(?) is honestly so damaging to a young girl and the image of herself
her usage of the word slut towards nancy is a way of kind of taking that power back? being able to deflect that assumption off her and onto someone else if just for a brief moment no one is thinking about her and what they'd normally throw at her is being used for someone else and in the moment it feels good but after it's a reminder that she made nancy feel the way people have been making her feel for years and that's why as soon as she can carol apologizes to nancy

some of u r real idiots and im saying this in a mean way
carol apologized to nancy that next monday at school
to add onto the last post, steve cutting them off caused a riff between tommy and carol which lead to a small break up
steve and tommy were the only real connections carol had and when steve ended their friendship she really looked at the rest of her friends and knew of she wasn't popular they wouldn't be her friends because the moment steve was no longer friends with tommy and her they all turned their backs on him
one canon divergence is carol doesn't like billy at all she had that passing fascination but then he opened his mouth
