TV
Television is something that I am deeply passionate about. When I was a kid, TV helped to expand my view on the world (and escape from my own world) - it was all consuming and wonderful.Â
In my adult years, I have narrowed my interest in TV and now consider myself to be a very picky, but serious television watcher. I mainly watch comedy, but will dabble in other genres from time to time.Â
Most of the time, I will vet shows before starting them - waiting to hear good things from multiple sources or watching a trailer very critically. Once that happens and I decided to give the TV show a try, I will watch the first 5 to 10 minutes (sometimes even less) of something and then either keep going or turn it off, never to think about it again.Â
If a show gets bad or repetitive, I have no problems with stopping in the middle of a series. Who has time for bad?Â
Overall, it is 100% worth it when you find a gem - these are the TVs show you can’t stop thinking about, that you’re reminded of constantly in your everyday life.Â
There is no doubt that too much TV can be brain numbing and a waste of time and because of this, I think it's important to try and find your place in the TV world, but not to overdo it. This might be an unpopular opinion, but who TF has time for TRHW? If there is something that is ironically funny, sure, I can get behind that for a few episodes - but otherwise, what is the point??
Skin Care
I went back and bought the Madewell bodysuit today! With the 10% discount, it was totally worth it! I can’t wait to wear it out this weekend.Â
On another note, I recently drastically changed my skin routine. After turning 28, I figured I should get serious about taking care of my skin. I made a consultative appointment with the cosmetic dermatologist at Kaiser. It was $45 out of pocket for this kind of appointment. While at the appointment, the esthetician looked at my skin and asked me about my concerns. I stated that I mainly wanted to act preventatively as well as have direction around how to best take care of my skin since there are so many products available.Â
The following was recommended to me:Â
Morning: Gentle cleanser, phloretin CF gel, moisturizer triple-lipid, and SPF 30+ sunscreen.Â
Night: Gentle cleanser, retexuring activator, moisturizer triple lipid.Â
Most of the products that were recommended were too expensive for me to purchase so I decided to try some more affordable options. I bought the following mad hippie items: vitamin c serum; exfoliating serum. I also purchased the CeraVe night moisturizer. For face cleanser, I use Cetaphil which the esthetician said was fine and for sunscreen, I use 110 SPF from Neutrogena. Overall, my skin has been looking pretty good, but I definitely feel like it helps when I spend time applying and massaging in the serums. I know I should be better about reapplying sunscreen throughout the day, but I can never find the time!Â
Eventually, I would like to include Retinol in my routine as well, but I’m waiting before I choose to make more changes so my skin can continue to adjust.Â
On most days, I am pretty happy with my skin and feel good about the time I take to care for it. However, there are some days when I am overly exhausted and it really shows. In reflection, this is a reminder that stress and fatigue can impact us in ways that are hard to prevent or reverse - great reminder to continue to aim for health!Â
Halloween
Honestly, I usually think about Halloween all year and then leave it to the last minute to actually put anything together. This year, I was determined to be a classic ghost and do the whole thing with holes cut in a sheet. I thought it would be pretty ridiculous and have been talking about it since February. Ironically, the logistics of pulling that off seemed like too much.Â
Instead, I plan on dressing as a cactus. One day after work, I made my rounds to a thrift store, a crafting store, and a department store for the materials. I was able to find a homemade knit green sweater for $6 at the thrift store, pipe cleaners for $1 per pack at the crafting store, and some clip in flowers for my hair at the department store, which cost me nothing since I had a gift card. I put everything together later that night.Â
I am pretty happy with the funds, planning, and ease that went into the costume and I still think it’s pretty funny.Â
With Halloween comes A LOT of candy (surprise), especially at work. Candy eating is inevitable so I try to embrace it, but I only eat the good stuff - anything with peanut butter.Â
It’s exciting to be a part of everything, candy, costume and all!Â

A Day Off
Today, for unforeseen reasons, my coworkers and I received a day off. Reasons for this day off were not ideal, but the day off itself is a true gift.
Being able to take a day for yourself, especially one that comes as a surprise, provides the opportunity for so many revitalizing activities. On a day like today, I choose to spend my time in part relaxation, part pleasure, and part active efficiency. I’ll add some social to the mix as well.
The usual alarm goes of at 5:40AM, and today I was reallyyy feeling the pain when that happened. I quickly checked my email - saw that work was canceled, and went back to sleep. Instead of setting another painful alarm, I chose to listen to my body, sleeping until I woke up naturally - around 9AM (clearly I needed sleep). At this point, I’m already ecstatically thinking about the day ahead, how I can spend my time, and what I can accomplish.
Firstly, I think I deserve a morning reward (for what, who knows), so I make myself a cup of tea and cozy up to my computer in bed for some morning NPR. I will spend the next hour or so doing a little work, tweaking my blog, and budgeting for the remainder of the month. I will likely throw on a Netflix show in the background to keep myself entertained. Knowing myself, I will probably go on a few internet tangents, trying to figure out how to revive my dying fig tree.
After I am satisfied with my level of comfort/productivity I will consider all of the things I did not have time for this weekend because I was visiting friends in LA. On the agenda, I will make my lunches for the week, sort my laundry, and wash my damn hair (I truly feel like I never have time to wash my hair - or maybe it’s just always just the very last thing on my to-do list).
Hopefully, I can do this all by 2. I know that FEELS like plenty of time, but can one really limit the amount of time it feels good to lay in bed?
What to do next?
Each month, I consider the bigger purchases I want to make and put off making them until the beginning of the following month, just to be sure they are necessary. Of course, there are exceptions - things I know I’ll need for sure, urgent purchases, or things that are on sale -  but I really like to make sure I’M sure. This month on the first, I bought a fire extinguisher (haha), DIYed an earthquake kit, and a picked up a birthday present for my father. I also considered buying a subscription to Sunset Mag, but decided against it since I always blow through the issues in under 5 minutes - plus, Pinterest is free!
For the upcoming 1st, I’m considering a cold weather jacket for my travels to the east coast and maybe a cute new shirt from Madewell - I’ve been feeling a little frumpy lately and would like a cute top to go out in this winter. I would also like to buy an LED light for my beta - I’m afraid it’s going to start getting too cold for him as the seasons turn.
Window shopping is the perfect social activity on a day like today, so I plan to go *look* at the items I might want to purchase come November 1st. I have enlisted one of my very good friends to accompany me to both Sports Basement and Madewell. I’m hoping Sports Basement will have a few cute options and lucky enough, my brother has offered to let me use his steep discount. If I don’t see anything I like, I’ve got a super cute REI outlet itemlined up for purchase. Although a cold weather purchase will likely be expensive, I anticipate buying something good quality and being able to use it for years to come. Being from California, I don’t really own anything that will help me out below 40 degrees. On top of the sale/discounts, I am a member at both stores which gives me an extra 20% off pricing. Score!
At Madewell, I will l take a look and try on the different options considering the prices and versatility of each piece. This caught my eye last night . If I see something I am dying to add to my collection, I will come home and take a look at thredup for any comparable options - buying good quality second hand is always preferred. Additionally, I will consider the 10% discount I receive at Madewell because of where I work.
Social activities like these always seem to need to happen in conjunction with consuming food or drink. Wherever we go, I will likely go for the cheaper option of a tea or a sparkling water to curb my cravings.
Lastly, what would a day off be without physical activity (unfortunately, I’m not joking). I’ll head to the gym at 5 with my predetermined routine of mostly cardio and an array of leg, arm, and ab machines.
The night will be capped off by a dinner and wine at home with boyfriend, considering how different my day will look tomorrow when it’s back to work!
