Bestie I don't know how to tell you this but your post kinda fucking sucks
We all have our off days
Although this one was clearly made on an on day if ya know what im saying
do you ever laugh with your friends and think oh this is the point. this is the point of everything
two players, A and B, are playing a competitive 1v1 TCG game (MTG/YGO/whatever) at a tournament level. A asks B if they are holding a Counterspell/Maxx C/[insert card that hoses a specific play at instant speed] in hand. B tells A that they are not holding that card. A makes their play, which B proceeds to immediately hose by playing the card they just said they didn't have.
who is at fault here?
A, for believing their opponent
B, for lying
So the poll above is irrelevant
What this post is actually asking is: Should you be allowed to lie to your opponent in a competitive TCG tournament. And regardless of what game you play, the is always No
These moments where players use out of game objects to trick their opponent into making mistakes are fun to talk about sure. I'm sure lots of video essays have been written about pithing needle and borborygmos. But ultimately if i am hosting a card game tournament it is because i want to find out who is the best at the card game. Not who is the best at gaslighting their opponents.
Magic has been actively changing their rules to NOT encourage this kind of play (see pithing needle above), Because running tournaments that encourage the above play is fucking impossible. In this kind of environment when both players sit down at the table they will be immediately hostile and distrusting of each other. Which results in judges, who are already overworked and underpaid, having to take even more judge calls at an event
TCG's are all so complex and nuanced there are THOUSANDS of ways you can bluff without needing any of this other baggage. But if you enjoy this kind of thing, i highly encourage you to get into like werewolf or something else where lying is baked into the base rules of the game
