Short-term sacrifices for long-term pleasures
Tumblr Family,
Please share this with students anticipating to further their education by enrolling in graduate school. This would have been very helpful to me when I was studying a year ago.
Much Love,
The Black Collegian
Hi, I'm 17 in my 5th year of high school, and i was wondering if you think that i can become an ingeenier even though I'm failing math 2 ( geometry and stuff that i don't know how to say in English) and physics. I still have 3 months of school left so maybe i will be able to pick my grades up, but I'm not sure
You definetely can. I was not on top of my high school class and I still made it, you most definetely can! Pick up your grades, be confident, and know you can do it :)
Hi! Are you going for the MCAT? If so, what are some resources that could be helpful? Thank you
I’m going to write it pretty soon. I’ve been studying for it/putting it off since second year but now that I’m almost done my degree, I really have to do it :P In any case, I have prepared a general ‘MCAT 101′ that will help everyone figure out exactly what you need to do leading up to the test.
1) Start a schedule (or, try to): Fit in some studying every day, depending on how much time you have to prepare for it:-Free MCAT 3 month schedule-SN2ed’s 100 day MCAT study plan-Exam Kracker’s 10 week MCAT home study plan2) Figure out what is on the MCAT (2016): Before you begin studying, it’s a good idea to consult the AAMC website to find out EXACTLY what section topics (ie biochemistry of glucose metabolism in the biological and biochemical foundations of living systems) the MCAT will test you on. This way you can eliminate extra info that is not needed by the AAMC, and you can also study by section. You can find those here:- Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems-Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems-Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behaviour-Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills3) Gather Yer Materials: Generally, companies make study books that are specific to what the AAMC. Search reviews of prep books on the internet to see which one is good for you. I liked the flow of The Princeton Review for all but the Biochemistry section, and for this, I supplemented it with the Kaplan book. But here are some cheapies, cause why not:-AAMC Official Guide to MCAT exam-TPR Complete MCAT book with 4 full length exams-Search Craigslist for anyone selling used MCAT books for cheap-MD Hero MCAT Prep website-Khan Academy MCAT prep
4) Practice ‘till you cry yourself to sleep at night: This goes without saying, the more you practice, the less unprepared you will be during the exam. Nail your weakest subjects until they become your strongest ones. Then make all the other subjects your strongest too, by practicing some more. I think you can’t go wrong with official AAMC MCAT testing materials, but some companies have also created highly recommended practice exams. Start practicing by doing subject tests, then move along to full lengths. Here are the links:-AAMC Practice material (section questions and full lengths)-Normally, buying new test prep books have included full lengths-MCAT Question of the day-Kaplan MCAT flash cards5) Treat yoself. To avoid burnout, obviously.Hopefully these resources help you out. Good luck!!
“Med school is med school. It doesn’t matter if it’s Harvard, Yale, or a state school. It’s impressive. You got in. You are going to be learning the same things. Take it in. Be proud. Work hard.” -my doctor (I almost cried. This is what keeps me motivated while studying for the MCAT.)
Knowing the 20 Amino Acids is definitely a MUST for the 2015 MCAT
Amino acids that are usually negative (i.e. de-protonated) at physiological pH:
- Glutamate (E) Glu, and Aspartate (D) Asp
Amino acids that are usually positive (i.e. protonated) at physiological pH:
- Lysine (K) Lye, Arginine ® Arg
Histidine is sometimes charged at physiological pH.
physiological pH = 7, Neutral

“No one starts out on top. You have to work your way up. Some mountains are higher than others, some roads steeper than the next. There are hardships and setbacks, but you can’t let them stop you. Even on the steepest road, you must not turn back. You must keep going up. In order to reach the top of the mountain, you have to climb every rock.”
— Muhammad Ali

Self Doubt.
When I started college, being in engineering, I was surrounded by all of these brilliant people that knew a lot. They could solve problems like it was nobody’s business, and ace a test in a class that most engineering undergrads feared. I think we always admire who is better than us, and compare our weaknesses with somebody’s strengths, and that is what creates the self doubt. Self doubt is obviously doubting yourself, but it’s more than that, you’re doubting your potential. You don’t think you’re good enough.
I sometimes believe that the doctor dream is way too far away. I’m not good enough, I’m not smart enough, and I just can’t do it. I can’t seem to picture myself in a white coat at the white coat ceremony. I can’t seem to see myself prescribing medications to my patients. I can’t seem to detect proper diagnosis for my patients. I might even make a mistake in med school, like maybe bombing a simple exam, or maybe not passing the USMLE, and then I won’t obtain a residency.
Of course self doubt is also admiring that every other premed has their life under control and is making the best grades, and that in the end we’re the only ones that are struggling, and the only ones that are considering to give up.
Very few people can imagine themselves as a doctor. Most can imagine themselves as something else.
“I can’t see myself as a doctor or as a surgeon, but this is the only thing that I want.” The human body is an amazing machine. I want to take care of my patients and give them the best care possible. I want to make an impact on other people’s lives by bettering them when they are broken.
In the end, you have to realize that you have potential. So you want this dream? Work twice as hard as the guy next to you to get the grade that you want. It doesn’t matter if it takes you twice as long to get the material, as the other guy sitting next to you who sleeps in class and just “gets it.” You have potential, you just need to work a little harder than some, and that is okay. I used to think I was stupid because I didn’t get things as fast as others. I do still think this at times When this happens, remind yourself, “you got this, you know more than you think you know, breathe, go forward.”
Transforming into a doctor doesn’t happen straight away. It is a process. It’s okay to feel doubtful and unsure. You will fail, you will fall. It’s about getting back up, and trying again.
To have self doubt is something that’s reaching out to you on a personal intimate level. It’s you looking at yourself from a third perspective saying do you have what it takes to finish this? Do you have what it takes to make it happen? That is very personal. You have to feel so strongly about something to have that emotion come up. Does it mean that it’s not meant to be? Not at all.
You’re your number one supporter, and what you tell yourself, you will believe. So believe that you can.
“Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” - Henry Ford
I wish posts had dates! Its been like 3+ years since I wrote this!
You must find your why. That why that gets you up early in the morning. That why that has you staying up late. That why that keeps you going. If your why does not fill you up with a mixture of emotions, bringing with it both happiness and tears, laughter and anxiousness, eagerness and worries, then it is not your why. Keep searching until you find it.

Hey,i think it would be really cool if you made some study with me study session videos on youtube, that would be so helpful and motivating! :D love your blog btw, you're such an inspiration
I wish i had the time to do so! :( Maybe when I get into medical school? Right now my focus is 100% on getting in.. I’ll then do youtube and study tips, study with me’s, etc. Maybe in the future, I’m considering it! :D
Hi! Okay so I just decided to major in Computer Science at the end of my freshman year. I fell in love with the class and knew I wanted to continue. I originally thought I was going to be pre med major in psychology and go to med school. Then, I changed my mind. Anyways, lately I've been wanting to go to med school. Do you think it's too late? I'm starting my sophmore year soon. Do I need to be on a pre-med track to go to med school? Thank you!!
You don't necessarily have to change your major if you're in computer science, just be sure to take the premed requirements for medical school and you should be able to apply. Good luck!
