reblog if youre older than ao3
(there's a lot of people asking about this, but the legal age to use social media is 13, except in few countries. so yes, there are people here under 15)

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.

I'm starting to get smile lines.
How lovely to have smiled so often that happiness permanently etches itself into your face
How metal to have lived a life where your face now pre-warns people not to fuck with you
How resilient to have cared so strongly that empathy is now visibly displayed on your face
if i was at harvard in 2004 i wouldāve stopped it

tomorrow another evil will dawn on us but because of your friend there is one less evil persisting and for that i am eternally grateful
I'll take some fun American facts, please!
Today You Learned about Gilbert! Or, as heās more commonly known, the Marquis de Lafayette. Or as Lin Manuel-Miranda calls him, āEveryoneās favorite fighting Frenchman.ā
Also, uh, this picture was taken in a room before I noticed the sign that said āNo pictures, please,ā so, uh⦠this photo shouldnāt technically exist.
So you probably know that the Marquis de Lafayette was a young Frenchman who came to the colonies to help the Patriots fight for independence from Britain, and became one of Washingtonās top generals, who helped build support for the American cause among his fellow Frenchmen (if you didnāt know that, call your high school history teacher and beg him or her to do a better job). Heās also the namesake of every āLafayetteā and āFayettevilleā youāll find across the US today.
Things you may not know!
-His full name was Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette.
-He offered to serve in the Patriot army without pay.
-He wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Man, the document laying out some of the ideals at the beginning of the French Revolution.
-While heās buried in France, heās buried under American soil from Bunker Hill that was sprinkled on his grave.
-Legend has it that during World War I, the American troops declared āLafayette, we are here,ā upon arriving in Paris, as a sort of āreturn the favorā deal for his part in fighting for the United States.
Donāt forget that despite becoming a naturalized US citizen in his lifetime, the man was later awarded a posthumous honorary American citizenship. He is, quite literally, 200% American.
this headline is so fucking horrible why is it whenever indigenous people are murdered everyone avoids saying they were murdered
itās so important to show solidarity with indigenous people right now and remember that this was a hate crime. rising hearts is an indigenous run organization and theyāre asking everyone who can to braid their hair on monday regardless of if youāre native american or not
The 'I hate children' crowd is just as bad as the 'oh you'll want children someday' crowd I said what I said
I say this as an almost 34 year old afab told not half an hour ago that I was lying about not wanting children
Neither extreme are extant children's faults. Get over yourselves.
Sure! @snoweylily At heart it's because both are dicks.
With more depth, the I hate children crowd operate on the same level as people who complain about neurodivergent people: these things are inconvenient to me so the people doing them are terrible and I hate them.
Obviously neurodivergent adults are adults, before someone thinks I'm saying otherwise. The principle of 'someone is inconveniencing me/doing things I don't find appropriate, ergo I hate them/think they shouldn't be out in public/think people should 'better control' them' remains the same.
So we have that. Then we have the fact that kids are constantly learning and growing and being exposed to new things. Adults don't always or even often interact with new things with perfect equanimity, even without being little cocktails of constantly changing everything packed into an equally constantly changing small package. 'I don't hate kids, I hate the parents who let them act like that' like what. Like kids, who don't yet know how to act? They can only learn by practice and exposure. 'They shouldn't be let out until they've learned then' how? The I hate children crowd don't want them in public. How are they gonna learn, through VR?
Not wanting to have kids? Absolutely valid. Not thinking you should be in charge of kids? Also absolutely valid. Sensory issues? Valid, but not the kids' faults, who are probably having sensory issues themselves. Hating kids?
Well, how would the hating kids crowd feel if someone hated them for learning and existing as a child? In the words of Maxine, that was you once. Be humble.
(And if people DID hate you simply for being a kid, I am sorry. That was wrong of them, and you didn't deserve that. Think of how much it hurt and reconsider this dickery now)
Re, the 'oh you'll want kids someday' crowd, almost always linked to deeply conservative ideas about controlling people with uteruses and children alike: kindly fuck off, you don't know me or my body, you're one of the reasons kids have a hard time and at least eight of the reasons afabs do.
I guess it boils down to, don't hate the kids who are as much a victim of the system we live in as the rest of us are, because they are also alive in this system, but they have even less control over it than the rest of us

Hey btw, here's a piece of life advice:
If you know what you'd have to do to solve a problem, but you just don't want to do it, your main problem isn't the problem itself. Your problem is figuring out how to get yourself to do the solution.
If your problem is not eating enough vegetables, the problem you should be solving is "how do I make vegetables stop being yucky". If your problem is not getting enough exercise, the problem you should be solving is "how do I make exercise stop sucking ass". You're not supposed to just be doing things that are awful and suck all the time forever, you're supposed to figure out how to make it stop being so awful all the time.
I used to hate wearing sunscreen because it's sticky and slimy and disgusting and it feels bad and it smells bad, so I neglected to wear it even if I needed to. Then I found one that isn't like that, and doesn't smell and feel gross. Problem solved.
There is no correct way to live that's just supposed to suck and feel bad all the time. You're allowed to figure out how to make it not suck so bad.
