Hello there and welcome to the world of Starfall! Starfall is a fantasy audio drama podcast with a talented ensemble of voice actors, beautiful original music, and sound design magic you can really hear.

It follows the adventures of the Carouvel Traveling Acting Troupe, a group of magical theatre performers, as they’re joined by Leona, a wandering warrior who’s searching for a greater purpose to her life.

Oh, and did I mention the swords? There’s lots of swords.

Starfall has a full 12-episode (+ one Halloween special) season out, which you may be inclined to check out if you:

this tag made me happy, but also made me want to ramble about some parts of ~the making of~ this outfit.

the skirt is reversible. the shape, laid out, is like a weird oval that starts to curve in on itself. it contains around 4 layers of fabric (2 layers of blue tulle, 1 layer of pale blue satin, 1 layer of navy blue silk dupioni. the ruffles along the hem were a huge pain and were something like 75 yards of fabric before i stacked them into 25 yards (3 layers) and then ruffled it down to 8 yards (the circumference of the skirt's hem pre-ruffles). i had to hand sew the daytime side of the skirt to the ruffles, and man, it was not fun to hand-sew 8 yards.

the daytime side has grasses, leaves, and stems made of several colors and widths of ribbon, trimmed and singed into shape, and then sewn on to the tulle. the flowers are all hand-sewn into place. the pink flowers in particular were a serendipitous find from my neighbors throwing out a fake tree with those flowers all over it. the fake tree is now decorating my living room (after a good dusting), and the flowers are all on this skirt (after a good washing).

the nighttime side continues the ribbons from the other side, but makes them blue comet trails. the comets are stylized to look more like the colorful sunburst stars from the movie and are a combination of rhinestones and hand-sewn beads. i can't remember how many rhinestones...more than 1000. the idea between day and night is that the skirt represents the same setting, the same valley, at different times in the story. the hi-low shape of the skirt offers a peek at both sides at once.

the blouse is blue silk organza. the clouds on the puff sleeves and bust area were free-motion embroidered on my grandmother's old quilting machine with little idea of what i was doing except for a rough sketch of an outline. it felt a bit like sketching or painting, but with 2 lines at a time (i used a twin needle to cover more area faster). since the fabric is transparent, i had to be extra precise with all my seams. i opted for tidy little french seams, and i'm very proud of the effect! i also tacked some cups into it for modesty/support under the clouds. the cropped cut also reflects me getting more comfortable with my own body over the course of the pandemic because i didn't really wear crop tops before 2020. i've worn this top several times in public now without the giant skirt and kind of want to make a version with cheaper, less fragile materials because i just love it!

the hat is just a hat, with some extra doo-dads added like leftover flowers from the skirt, a bit of extra dupioni cut with pinking shears and tied into a bow, black feathers, and some dangling star charms i added to one side.
