Saw the trailer for Breaking In— it looks like Panic Room if Jodie Foster had weapons training and intimidation tactics.

The Handmaid’s Tale is a beautifully constructed, wonderfully acted show, that presents a possible future for America that is both remarkably prescient and emotionally devastating from episode to episode. Yet somehow, this incredible show has one enormous flaw: it never addresses race. Black actors are cast in significant roles— the protagonist (portrayed by #ElisabethMoss ) has a Black daughter, Black best friend (the wonderful #SamiraWiley ), and Black husband (#OTFagbenle ), yet the precariousness of their situations as it relates to race is never mentioned. At first, I argued against #TheHandmaidsTale having a race problem. I argued A LOT. I was too blinded by the show’s production value and performances to admit that it failed in its portrayal of a dystopian American future so close in time to our own. I wanted to believe they were presenting race subtlety by having all the commanders be White with White wives and having the Handmaids who were of color be predominantly light-skinned or Asian. But there’s no dimensionality to how the show presents people of color existing in a predominantly White Christian fundamentalist institution, which is patently absurd. The show never considers the racial dynamics of White families turning to Black Handmaids to birth their children, or Black men being hired to hold the same jobs as White men in an Evangelical theocracy spearheaded by White domestic terrorists, or even the challenges of the White protagonist dating a Black man or raising a Black daughter. This absence of intersectionality costs the show. It undermines the narrative’s message, making The Handmaid’s Tale seem like less a prophetic warning and more of an obtuse fantasy.

Oh, Matt Smith. I think I’ll miss you most of all. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 How he manages to embody the risqué- stodgy-straightforwardness that is Prince Philip while still having this light in his eyes. So people may have played this part and been bland or stiff or overly offensive— Smith makes it involving, at turns heartbreaking and fun. Who will they get to replace him? Who can they get??

Beautiful, self destructive, eloquent, harsh, clever, too clever by half. An excess of character. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ I’m glad Peter Morgan, the creator of The Crown, wisely decided to switch out the actors every two seasons rather than try aging the current actors up. But I’ll be sad to see the current actors go, particularly Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret and Matthew Goode as Anthony Armstrong-Jones (who just got here! Maybe they won’t replace him yet??) Kirby in particular got to do so much in the second season, it’s a shame she won’t get to come back to explore that character further.

Netflix is in talks to cast Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret in season 3 of The Crown! 😲 Netflix, Netflix, baby— you need to seal this deal. This needs to happen. Getting Bonham Carter would take this show and the character of Princess Margaret to the next level. Season 2 already improved upon the first season, with Vanessa Kirby giving a breakout performance as Princess Margaret. Step Sisters looks like a tragically confused Bring It On remake. It’s like they took the whole plagiarism/cultural appropriation theme and said, “You know what? What if an all-White Toros weren’t good at moving their bodies at all, what if they were horrible and had no coordination or spatial awareness, and Isis decided to help them compete AND WIN in a historically Black cheerleading competition?” Only the cheerleading competition is stepping, and again, unlike in Bring It On, this group of people have zero experience in what they’re about to take on. Granted, this was directed by #CharlesStoneIII who directed #Drumline (and an American version of #spaced — what happened there?) and it’s written by #ChuckHayward who’s written for #DearWhitePeople but I have to say the overabundance of older maleness in the creation of this representation of ostensibly college-age women doesn’t bode well. I hate to prejudge— I’m loathe to do it. But I’m not terribly optimistic. 🗣 Watching the trailer, what do you think? Let me know in the comments.

Can we talk about the women of Black Mirror Season 4? Every episode has a female protagonist! Plus almost every episode has a strong female secondary character, except the marvelous hetero love story Hang the DJ and Metalhead, which is pretty much a solo survival story. The first episode, USS Callister, not only gives the narrative drive to a woman in its chauvinist horror story, psyching out the audience, it also gives a small arc to a woman in the form of Shania, played by Michaela Coel. Crocodile and Black Museum similarly flesh out their minor characters, giving resolution even to the smallest of characters. Beautifully written season of television— brava 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾
