The little orange hat š„¹š„°
Grey hairstreak (Strymon melinus) on native turkey mullein (Croton setiger), Northern California, US These adorably small butterflies wiggle their back wings while at rest. It is thought that this movement combined with the markings and "antennae" on their back wings are meant to mimic an insect's head. This coaxes jumping spiders, a major predator of smaller pollinators, to attack the wrong side of the butterfly, allowing it to flee.

I caught this rambunctious creature flying around the kitchen. Outside you go.
Life pro tip: a cheap butterfly net with telescoping handle is excellent for relocating small friends, especially if theyāre skittish and obsessed with the ceiling.
