XFiles rewatch: Audrey Pauley

(Spoilerzzzzzzz.)

Monica drops Doggett off after they went out for a drink, and they have a FLIRTY AF conversation in her car about how he's a dog person, but they do NOT kiss because they're ridiculous.

Monica drives away and a drunk driver hits her - sending her to a hospital.

(A reminder that Doggett was in a coma IN THE LAST EPISODE. These two, I swear...)

Waking up in a weird alternate universe hospital, Monica realizes she can't leave because theres a spooky electrical void outside (she tests it by dropping a coffee cup and it gets zapped so leaving that way is a nope) and meets two other dudes, Stephen and Barreiro, who are also stuck in this weird place.

Barreiro convulses electrically and then disappears, so Monica and Stephen explore the alt hospital and figure out they're in some sort of limbo.

In the real world hospital, Doggett refuses to believe Monica is brain dead despite Dr. Scully and Monica's Doc repeatedly telling him.

Audrey, played by Tracey Ellis, is a helper at the hospital (she lives there and delivers the flowers) who can travel between the real world and the alt hospital via a dollhouse version of the hospital she made and keeps in her room.

Audrey tells Doggett that he loves Monica, and also that Monica's soul isn't gone. Monica has Audrey tell Doggett that he's a dog person, which was the last thing she told him during their last flirty conversation.

Doggett realizes something XFiles-y is up -- and boom, Agent Doggett is on the case, looking at medical records and putting together that Monica's Doc is a Dr. Death who "likes pulling the plug on patients." He and Scully are too late to save Stephen (who dies in Monica's arms in the alt hospital) and after a nurse who worked on Monica turns up dead (RIP Whitney you were just trying to stop a potential malpractice suit) Doggett knows he's on to something.

Scully explains, without hesitation, how exactly SHE would kill someone and make it look like natural causes. One can only assume she has thought about this before and, like, I don't blame her.

Monica is an organ donor, her parents are on the way from Mexico City to say goodbye, and her time is limited. Doggett breaks down (Geez, Robert Patrick's ability to fall apart is ASTONISHING) and begs Audrey to go into the alt hospital and tell Monica she has to give them a sign because he doesn't know what else to do.

Audrey, a real one, does it. #heroine

Monica realizes its Audrey who built the alt hospital and therefore Audrey can change the rules - and then Dr. Death shows up in Audrey's room with a needle. (Booooo!)

In her last moments, Audrey tells Monica to jump into the void bc she changed it and its okay now. Monica takes the leap of faith, and just as the transplant teams are in place...she wakes up.

Doggett slams the Doc's head against a wall, but is too late to save Audrey.

Doggett takes Monica home (and again, they do NOT kiss) and he watches her go inside.

End episode.

Its weird. Its sweet. I love this one. Sigh, the Doggett/Reyes show The XFiles could have become would have been pretty special. <3

Magnificent 7 rewatch: Chinatown

(Here be spoilers.)

Plot 1. The railroad is coming through, and it brings trouble. First, railroad dudes are coming to town and getting drunk and causing all sorts of trouble. As we open, the rail guys are tearing up the saloon and Inez has to be rescued by her Buck/Vin boyfriend squad. Out at the actual railroad, the Chinese laborers who dare speak up about the horrible conditions are going missing/turning up dead. A Chinese father and son (Wo Chin - played by BABY Jon Chu) come to ask the 7 for help, and our dudes are on the case. Immediately, they get a bad vibe but no one will talk to them out of fear. Rail Boss Brauner (Brad Dourif!) is super slimy and Chris hates him immediately - seriously I loled at how much he hates him. Its soon figured out that the government pays $1 a day to the workers BUT the workers are only getting 50 cents. When Wo Chin is about to hang for trying to burn Brauner, the 7 take him back to town where Josiah annoys him, he asks Chris to teach him to shoot so he can be an American, and he winds up stealing Josiah's gun and heading back to the rail camp. Theres a huge fight between the Chinese and the white bosses, but the 7 arrive and help. Wo Chin shoots Brauner as he's about to make off with the money, but he lives and Chris says Brauner will hang for his crime. The one good dude is left in charge and its understood the workers will be paid what they're owed and treated better.

Plot 2. We continue our game of "Oh No, Ezra Standish realizes he's a good person" - Ezra, eternal gambler, is swindling the Chinese at a game when a man tries to sell him his niece, Lei Pen. Ezra tries not to get involved, but Nathan jumps in to help and the next thing he knows Ezra has bought the young woman. Ezra immediately frees her, but she doesn't have anywhere else to go so she follows him and sneaks into his room. Ezra is a perfect gentleman, but Nathan finds out and assumes the worst until Lei Pen declares she wants to stay with Ezra. They have a very quick romance and she tells Ezra exactly where to find what they need to prove Brauner is ripping off the laborers. Ezra heads to the rail camp solo to solve it all, winds up getting caught, is made to dig his own grave, hits guys with a shovel, and brawls until Vin arrives to help. After the resolution, he gives Lei Pen the money she needs to get back to her family, and its very sweet.

Plot 3. JD buys a potion to make himself taller. Buck teases him about this, but immediately buys a love potion which he's gonna try and use on Inez. BUT! JD finds out and immediately tells Inez, and they have way too much fun driving Buck bananas by flirting with each other - and also by JD flirting with Buck. (JD Dunne they could never make me hate you.) <3

Cast is great, it looks great, and the writing is spot-on. It's another A and another step to (sigh!) showing how good the show would have been if it had more seasons. No notes. <3

XFiles rewatch: Providence

(Obviously here be spoilers)

When last we left our friends, a lady from a UFO cult had run over Doggett and shot at The Lone Gunmen's van because she wanted to kidnap Scully's baby, William.

When we rejoin the action, Doggett is in the hospital in a coma (continuing the "John Doggett is having a terrible day" tradition), and ugh AD Follmer is leading the task force to find the baby and Scully HATES all this and doesn't trust anyone at the FBI, even Skinner.

Scully is gonna find her baby herself. Monica is kind of a jerk about The Lone Gunmen's involvement, but Byers managed to slip a cell phone into the baby carrier before the abduction so they follow the signal. However, when Scully & Monica arrive at the vehicle where the carrier is, William and UFO Cult Lady are gone.

Follmer confronts Monica because he knows she's keeping secrets, and Monica (bless her) immediately runs to tell Scully. This leads them to Agent Comer's hospital room.

Comer, who previously tried to kill William (the one Scully shot and beat up) is in a coma. Scully & Monica arrive with the artifact he was carrying (the one William maybe made fly around) and it revives him and he tells them about a prophecy that William is the chosen one - and that since Mulder is dead, William will lead the Colonists. Comer was trying to kill William to prevent that. The artifact has revived Comer. He's gonna live.

Then new baddie Toothpick Man kills Comer.

It seems for a minute like his death might get blamed on Scully & Monica, but Monica the GOAT throws a fit and figures out who it really was.

Scully prays over Doggett, who wakes up and maybe had a vision. He gives Scully a message not to trust the cult.

Josepho, the head of the UFO cult, tells Scully to meet him at a diner (in Canada?) and tells her that Mulder isn't dead BUT if she wants to see her baby again, she needs to bring him Mulder’s head.

Sure. Fine. Whatever.

With a little tech assist from TLG, Scully and Monica follow Josepho to the dig site arriving just in time to see the spaceship take off.

Sometimes The XFiles lets you see a spaceship. Sometimes it even lets the characters see one...

All the ship leaves behind are the burned bodies of the UFO Cult...and one totally fine crying baby William.

Doggett and Monica reunite in the hospital chapel and Doggett is clearly bothered by who TF was talking to him in his coma.

Follmer asks Kersh to have his name taken off the official report bc the monitors in Comer's room prove that the man did, in fact, recover before he died/was murdered. Kersh, annoyed, goes into his office and hands Toothpick Man (who overheard Follmer) the XFile of the case.

Oh and Toothpick Man has the supersoldier neck thing. ;)
