â I believe the greeting youâre looking for is, Hello. â
AÂ faint tinge of pink bloomed slowly on the Norse goddessâ cheeks and spread like watercolor across her face. Skadi had heard that Hadesâ wife, Persephone had arrived in the city but did not expect to meet her so soon--and definitely did not expect... whatever it was she was expecting to see. She didnât even know how she came to realize it was Persephone who addressed her; there was an aura about her that just seemed to let her know.
Goddesses in general were mostly gifted with exceptional aesthetic features. Coupled with their personal standards for beauty, it was very rarely that a goddess would find another exceptionally beautiful, and even rarer that they should admit it (begrudgingly or otherwise). While Skadi was not one who took these to heart too much and have appreciated other goddessâ physical features, there were very few that she took note of. This sounded exceptionally petty but it really wasnât--Skadi simply saw the beauty in most anything.
She had seen Aphrodite and her beauty was the kind that arrested you--stopped you in your tracks and completely rendered you unable to function, if you were the kind that put stock into beauty that much, at least. Skadi wasnât, or mayhaps it was her own divine blood keeping her from experiencing the effect the love goddess had on lesser beings, but it did not affect her so much. Just about as much as Freyaâs beauty did, which she presumed was to be expected of goddesses under that caliber.
But Persephone...
âYes, of course,â she managed, her voice slightly strained as she became aware of the blush that was slowly becoming more noticeable despite the coppery tone of her skin. âForgive me, I did not...â Did not what, exactly? Did not expect that Persephone was going to be here? Did not think that her beauty was the kind that crept up on you slowly, the kind where you noticed little features about her first--the eyes, then the hair, then the way her skin glinted or the gentle curve of her lips, the soft flutter in her eyelashes--and then how the entire image suddenly burned in your eye, but by then you were rendered speechless, incapable of thought, let alone breathing--
Gods, what was she, a schoolgirl?
Wresting what vestige of self-control she had left in her, Skadi let out a calming breath and gave the young goddess a small, albeit exceptionally pleased smile. âApologies, Queen Persephone, I just came from a hunt and am a little exhausted,â she replied smoothly. âHello, indeed! I had planned to send a dinner invite tomorrow for you and your husband, but perhaps fate thought today was a better time as any.â Odin strike her, she was rambling. She hadnât rambled in front of anyone in millenia! Not even Baldr...
âWould the two of you care to join me for dinner one of these days?â Somewhere, a small voice in her head found herself cursing Hades for his good luck, and it sounded just a tiny bit bitter, too.
