AUS230 Overview of Tri 5

This trimester has been the hardest part of course due to serval difficulties during the trimester but due to perseverance and good project management I was able to past the difficult parts and strive for the finish goal. During this trimester the main focus’ were the Band press pack for Villanova and Post production project for Batman & Robin. I did also have a major project outside of uni which I focus on so much to be able to make an impact and to get recognised amongst the community.

Villanova The band we chose to do this trimester for the band press pack were a local band called Villanova. At first they had the dedication and gave us the impression they were ready to record there first EP professionally, Our first studio session with them had to be cut short due to miscommunication and the band not knowing what they wanted to record. This caused me to called a critical meeting to discuss possible pathways this could lead to and what needed to improve over the trimester. As the trimester progressed the band started to get better and started to work better as a group and started to understand the concepts of the differences between planning a song and what studio time is used for. There was an instance were the band wasted 4 hours just to figure out song arrangement which called for another critical meeting, from this point on it was crucial we drilled into their heads that they need to know what they are doing or we need to find someone else and after that they practised and practised the songs they wanted to do and found a method that would help them record in the studio. As the trimester was closing to the end the band did show a professional side to recording their music and the only thing I didn’t agree with was that 2 members did the whole song due to the other band members being busy or unavailable. My main focus’ during this project was setting up the protool sessions, making sure that everything was in order, and the overall project management. Some things over the trimester were out of my control due to some conflicting opinions and other minor disputes. I also give Dyllyn a big up for producing a mini video series for the band to show what they are really like and who they are as everyday normal people.

Post Production For the post production project we chose to do a scene form the 1997 film Batman & Robin which features names such as George Clooney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman and Chris O'Donnell. The reasoning behind choosing this scene was to make watchable and to make it better overall (The film was terrible). The plan originally for this scene was to turn it into a comedic fight scene but in the end changed the idea to a more dark and sinister version to the original. Compared to the original we made a lot more foley and created more sounds and created better ADR. Over the course of the trimester I tried bringing up that we needed a lot more sounds than we originally recorded but people didn’t listen to me until 3 weeks before we had to do the 5.1 mix of the scene. I also stayed back in the studio a bit more than the others to do various clean up jobs and a lot of renaming and grouping because when the sounds were recorded no one named the clips or tracks, this added a major tone of work for me as others didn’t worry about the naming. I was also in charge of pre mixing stages and some of the surround sound mixing. During the duration of this trimester I have learnt heaps about workflow and flexibility within groups and the essence of managing two major projects.

Project outside of Uni The project that I have been working on outside of uni was a Mix for a Mixing comp for Boz Digital Labz with the prize being a lifetime of plugins past, present and future and PRS guitar signed. The purpose of this mix was to compare my engineering and mixing skills against other from around the world and get and idea on what other people think is a good mix. The contest ended with 2400 entries which makes me happy that my mix will be judge and analysed among other professional engineers. The process I did for the mix was Set up my Mixing workflow and adjust all the levels of the tracks to an appropriate level, then have a session with just drum editing which took time. Then I would move onto the guitars and orchestral stems start mixing them and slowly make my way towards the Vox tracks. I also did one last session to double check everything and do any minor edits before I submit the submission.

What was the major learning points this Trimester The major learning points for me was the mastering pracs and self directed leaning for mastering, surround mixing, and project management. I also learnt to be adaptable to any situation any project will throw at you. The mastering sides of things was really interesting to me as that is the path I am looking towards and I did learn the aspect of mastering but it would of been good if we had a unit dedicated to mastering so we could learn more aspects of mastering and techniques that could be used in a mastering chain. The surround mixing was another interesting aspect to learn but I wish there was a chose to have a dedicated project that would help learn and understand what makes a good surround mix. Project management this trimester was a big thing for me because I taught myself and showed a lot of management throughout this trimester to make sure the projects would be completed and make sure that the projects will be done to a professional standard.

This trimester has had its challenges but what is education if everything is easy and what would I learn if everything was already done for me - Jezza

Week 12

This week focus’ were the mixing of Villanova’s songs and to get them ready for mastering in the final week of Trimester. For post production it was planning for surround mixing and making sure that everything was right and nothing else was needed. For outside of uni I finished my mix for the comp which was uploaded to Soundcloud.

Villanova For Villanova each of our group members got a song each to do (Me and Dyl did same song due to having only three songs) and throughout the week it was focus on mixing so we could have it ready for mastering during final week of trimester. During this week I was also on everyones cases about time management I was making sure everything was gonna be done to a professional level instead of everything been left to last minute.

Post Production For Post production I focused on the documentation and and planning for anything that needed to be recorded before we started surround mixing during the final Week of Trimester.

Outside of Uni This week was mainly focused on my Mix for the Boz Digital Labz Mixing Comp which is currently in the stages of judging a branch of 2400 Mixes, I really happy that my mix will be compared to 2400 other professional engineers around the world. Week 11

This week was an important week for both post production and Villanova because was a last chance to have majority of everything done and prepare to get higher grades. Outside of Uni I have been finalising the Mixing comp I’ve been doing and getting it ready to upload for submission.

Villanova For Villanova they had once last chance to record the last song or there wouldn’t have been three songs which pushed them to pick up there game and strive to finish the last song in a 8 Hour Session. First thing we encountered was only 2 of the band members were able to show up to the session (luckily they knew each of the instruments and knew the structure of the song) because the other two members weren’t available. The session itself went so well I would consider it one of my best recording sessions to date because the two members who were there got in and didn’t muck around and tried for their best take every take. The flow of the recording and the consistency of each take really made the session easier to manage. After we recorded the song the members were happy about the sessions and said themselves that they did work better as a duo because they were on the same page the whole time and were syncing well with each other.

Post Production Post production was the main focus this week because we needed to get it done and we needed to start nailing down on what we have missed. We could have avoided this in my opinion if the group weren’t too laid back and we started knuckling down from week one. The session was a good session in terms of getting stuff recorded and starting to fill in the spaces but would have been better if the ground recording wasn’t double booked. I booked both rooms 4 days before the next person booked Tascam but I got left for dust witch annoyed me (putting it nicely) because I wasn’t on the system. After the recording of foley we started to re-name clips and nudge things into place so it would be easier for us to surround mix

Outside of Uni Outside of Uni I have been working on the Mix for the mixing comp. Over the weeks I have noticed things that were either intentional or put there to throw of the engineers such as the audio volume of each clip was pushed to almost clipping which was solved with clip gain. Over the coming week will be the final touches and fixes before submission which will be uploaded to soundcloud.

Week 10

Week 10′s focus was to finish the second song for Villanova’s EP and cleaning up the post production session getting it ready for a easy workflow during the surround mixing stage. Outside of Uni my time has been dedicated to the mixing comp for Boz digital labz and searching for some good mixing tips.

Villanova Villanova’s second song needed some vocals and guitar before we could start the mixing stage so we recorded the last of the tracks on the tuesday. The session could have gone a lot better. We did get everything recorded but a lot of the time was wasted with setting up and pro tool issues. We could of avoided this if the band was well rehearsed, and dedicated to finishing and recording a good song. We have told the band they have one session to get their last song done and have asked them to be more dedicated to releasing a professionally done song.

Post Production For post production we had a session on Wednesday from 6 - 10 so we could record some more sounds and doing a overall maintenance of the session. This involved naming clips, making the session smaller, deleting any unnecessary audio files. I also bounced out individual sounds so we could organize the session better and made sure we don’t lose any sounds within the session. We also did planning for other sounds that need to be recorded and planning for week 11′s studio sessions.

Outside of Uni Outside of uni I have been working on the mixing comp for Boz Digital Labz. I have spent so much time analysing the individual tracks so I can pick out any problems other engineering might not. I have been working on the orchestral side of things for the track which is proving to be a bit harder than I thought, I find this session will help improve in my overall mixing and critical listening. I also viewed a Lynda course on Pro Tools Mixing and Mastering which gave me some ideas and helped me if i ever questioned anything.

Week 9

This week was presenting work in progresses for Post production and Band press pack. This week I started getting stuck into the mixing competition for Boz Digital Labz as this would help he improve and learn from other engineers around the world.

Villanova This week for the band it was mainly mixing and and discussing future studio sessions to finish of Long Island Ice tea and when the band is free for a full day so we can start tracking their last song. For the first song Meant to be I am doing a quick mix to show to the rest of the group and get feedback on what could be better or if something is over processed or the sound isn’t right. For the vocals I got to use a new waves plugin I got called Maserati VX1. I like the parameters on this plugin to really give dynamics to the vocals which also is helping find what processes would be good to really bring out the vocals. I also like using MaxxBass to bring clarity to vocals, to do this I bring the frequency response to 250 htz and boost the bass using maxxbass parameter then using a EQ or high pass to slightly take away the low end to bring the clarity and crisp of the vocals.

Post Production For Post production after seeing the score introduced into the clip still needs various sounds and major layering to really give the impact of the sounds we want. I thought the poison Ivy dialogue was portrayed beyond perfection and I thought was the best part of the entire clip. One sound that really needs to be added is rustling throughout the scene because of fast movements of Batman and Robin, moving along sandbags. I think this trimester post production has really opened my eyes to how much junk you need to make a action have so much emphasis.

Outside of Uni Outside of uni I have been working on the Mixing competition which has been interesting due to the arrangement and the overall volume of each of the stems. I have done started moving onto the orchestral stems of the song and started panning for a stereo image. With Eq one plugin I have been specifically is the Ozone 6 Equaliser which had many options which are handy to to improve the overall sound. One option I had found was if you hold the ALT button (on mac) you can preview the sound without making any adjustments, this is awesome for finding the frequency response of the individual stems.

Week 8

This week was a good week for me because I had started the mix for Villanova’s song Meant to be and it has been a bit of a challenge due to some inconsistent drum hits and some level adjustments. I also found a great page that gave some pointers of some mixing techniques. We also started the recording the second track Long Island Ice tea

Villanova For the band this week it was started off mixing the song Meant to be witch we could show the band to see what areas of the song they would like different, I spent a day just cleaning up the session, making groups and sub-mixing the tracks so I am able to work at an efficient pace. I started working on the drums as they needed a lot of work because of inconsistent drum hits and very different in level per hit. On the Thursday we had three members of the band come in (the drummer couldn’t make) to start the recording of Long island Ice Tea. Luckily the vocalist was also a drummer and knew the arrangement of the song so we were able to track drums and bass and a scratch lead guitar take. The start of the session was a bit iffy because of technical difficulties with inputs of Saffire octopre, to resolve this problem we used inputs 6 & 7. The takes were awesome takes and as we found the band can’t play to a click with tempo changes as it puts them off and they don’t expect the quick change the click does. This was a good week for the band and the recording. We plan to have another recording session in two weeks (only available time) to finish of the guitar takes and the vocal takes.

Post Production For the post production side of things it was mainly discussing and planning for sounds that need to be there such as footsteps, layered sounds, how each sound should be mixed, how well the score would fit with the scene and what elements needed to be changed so we can get an awesome final product.

Outside of Uni Some musical stuff I’ve done is work on producing hip Hop beats for an EP I would like to release in the near future, I have also been writing lyrics which turns out to be harder when you continuously have better ideas for the song but need to change several phrases to make it work. The main thing that I’m proud of finding is a mixing competition with the grand prize being a PRS guitar and a lifetime of Boz Digital Labz plugins (don’t have to pay ever again). I shared this with all my classmates because I thought this would be good to get amongst other engineers from around the world and to learn techniques and tips from others to help improve future productions.

Week 7

This week wasn’t the best week for me in terms as recording an audio and this was the time of trimester I started having problems with my DAWs and other audio related programs.

Villanova On the Tuesday we had a whole day booked to record a song but this is where most of the issues took place. The setup process was fine but as soon it we started to set up the Pro Tool session we encountered the issue of the band not knowing the tempo changes due to not practising the song over the week and from this point on the session was wasted for the band trying to figure out the song arrangement and structure, this took 4 hours to do until we realised that the drummer was only new to the band and didn’t know the structure of the song which caused tension between the band and tension between our group. This session was called of early as we told the band to practise and practise the structure and arrangement of the song. We had another group meeting to talk about other possibilities and when our next session should be. We booked the Friday the following week on the 24th.

Post Production This week for post production we had a session on the Friday which was looking for extra sounds to record, re-recording Batman’s dialogue and an overall clean up of the session. Jayden Walker had started on the Score which is sounding great, I have started some sound design for some sounds and looked into creating more realistic sounds.

Outside of Uni Outside the AUS unit I have been having problems with multiple audio programs such as Pro Tools, Logic, Saffire Mix Pro, and Native Instrument plugins (Mainly Kontakt). A lot of these issues resolved with time and system reboots but some delicate WIP have been lost due to failed backup plans and bad maintenance. Besides the downside I have been looking into music marketing and distribution and various mastering techniques to make up for lost education I wish I had received.

Week 6

For week six we had a 2 hour mastering prac which should of gone for longer or had another class for. This week was the deciding point for the band Villanova if they were ready to record their first song for their EP.

Mastering Prac For the mastering prac it was an interesting start to the mastering chain and a good introduction to Izotope’s mastering platform Ozone. The prac itself was a great beginning In my opinion there needs to be more classes and pracs so we can start having a better understanding of what mastering is and how to be an effective mastering engineer. The one point I did enjoy was the fact you can create your own mastering chain and not limited to specific plugins and processing. I would love to start putting this knowledge to use with the help of some self directed learning I have conducted over the week.

VillaNova On the Tuesday 7th July 2015 we started the recording the first song for the EP, The song we were recording was ‘Meant to be’. The setup for the didn’t take to long but Dyllyn and I had to leave for a few hours due to having the Mastering Prac in the Neve. When we came back to the session the band seem to be going quite well with the recording having done various drum and bass takes. The sound of the recording was a bit soft but nothing a bit of mixing can’t fix. The guitars and vocal takes worked really well and didn’t need any major fix ups or redo’s.

Some at Home Practice This week I took a session of 100 Acre wood home to do a mix for myself and with the help of my brother (he did some listening to some processing to see what sounded better) I got a much cleaner sounding track and this also gave me the chance to use Waves MaxxBass which gave the vocals so much more clarity with a bass boost. This was one of the better mixes I’ve done due to some of the time and effort I really put into the mixing. Week 5

This week was an important week in turns of getting a final Mixdown done for 100 Acre wood reading the track for mastering. For the mix session it was Rob and I which I thought was really good because having less people the better in my opinion which stops a lot of conflict due to everyones difference in mixing and processing.

This session was quite an effective session in terms of mixing and simple processing. The first thing we did was setup up visual queues so we could quickly switch between drums, bass, guitars and vocals which improved our workflow throughout the session then we started to focus on the drums recordings and the shaping of sound for a overall better sound. This process took about an hour with the mixing of bass and vocals as well, but as soon it came to the guitar takes it took longer due to the excessive number of takes and microphones used. In the end we ended up taking out various takes which improved the overall mix and created a more dynamic friendly track. During this session I asked Rob about the control variables of some plugins as I didn’t have a full understanding of each parameter did, after Rob explained it to me I found that knowing the parameters of the plugin and with the help of good ears I made better processing on individual tracks creating a better overall mix I enjoyed. We did end up running out of time before we could fully mixdown the track which came under the essence of time management which is needed to complete full mixdown for clients.

Boom Group This week for our major projects we had a session on Tuesday that I wasn’t able to attend due to having a doctors appointment for my hand but did preparation for the recording we have on Tuesday the 7th of July for the band Villanova. We kept in constant communication with them making sure they knew what they were gonna record and keeping proper management especially on a tight time schedule. I’m quite confident that the recording session will be awesome and will we get everything done to perfection.

Week 4 updates

This week was a big week with the massive full day studio booking for AUS major studio projects, This week also consisted of constant pre planning with band making sure they would show and this was the week that The post production task started to lift of the ground. For 100 Acre Wood it was rerecording lead guitars and vocals.

100 Acre wood’s vocalist and Lead guitarist came in on Tuesday 23rd June 2015 and the group I was with recorded lead guitar and vocals. During the setup process one major problem we had to deal with was the Saffire Octopre not working. Because the ground recording room had only 4 inputs without the Octopre we had to give up a Guitar DI so we could setup a talkback Microphone. Later in the week during another studio session we booked for studio projects Jacob, Wian, Dyllyn and I went to a supervisor and found out that the problem was because of the word clock wasn’t setup right. Instead of the Octopre being set to the master word clock it was set up to be a slave in which no other piece of equipment in the C|24 was setup to be the master word clock. After that incident I sat down with Glen and talked about how does a word clock work and how the signal flow through word clocks work. This was quite interesting especially if I need to ever troubleshoot.

Some stuff I learnt while recording this week was to always clean up the session and it is always handy to have sub mixes to keep future recordings easier to navigate. Some issues that a rose were naming of tracks which is due to everyone’s different way of naming stuff and how each persons workflow is different to others, Any unwanted tracks should either be deleted or hidden so it doesn’t effect the recording process. A good way to record guitars that change in between clean and dirty signals is take one full take to get the idea and arrangement of the track then mark of each section so it’s easier to rerecord in quick punch mode. This recording session was interesting for due to layering the guitars to give a more of a crunch sound in which the guitarist wanted. During this session the layering was confusing because the workflow didn’t go well due to having multiple suggestions on how to record and name the tracks. One thing that I noticed during the recording was the significant drop in volume while recording which was caused by knocking an XLR cable, when we played back the individual track it lost almost all the sound it had and created a really weird tone.

BOOM Group

Post production started on the monday after Dyllyn joined our group which was used for ADR. All the ADR besides the girls voice was done but I would like to get someone else to do Robin due to having multiple problems with the final product. On the Friday it was a major 10 to 10 studio session for the band recording which gave us time to setup up properly and able to start recording as soon as it hit 6. The first problem we encountered was that the original drummer didn’t end up showing up, then it was the problem with the octopre which was fixed due to finding out it was the word clock that wasn’t setup properly. Dyllyn booked out film equipment to start of the video mini series which was a great thing for the band. After we had everything finally setup and started the recording process it seem to hit a brick wall really quick. The band started recording in sections that went in the right order or arrangement, and the workflow was all in all terrible, and timing of the song kept going out of time due to not having original drummer. The only thing that went awesome that night was Dyllyn and his video recordings. We packed up the band early because they needed to work on the song arrangement and understand the concepts of studio recordings and the concept of major organisation. After the band went home I called up an critical evaluation group meeting where I went over the constant checking on the band and their progress, how the studio session worked and how to improve such sessions and the plan to book both D&V booth and ground recording. We also discussed interviewing the band for the video series and future videos to do with the band. We also found that having a group meeting after every studio session was beneficial both for progress and grades.

Week 3

For week Three I was apart of the group that was setting up Flyball Gov’nor guitarist in the TLA room. First thing that was a minor problem was talkback not sending through to the headphones. This was a quick problem to fix because following the signal chain led to the mix B button being pushed which caused the desk to think that the signal was travelling through protools then back out through post fader. During this session I learned that Over dubbing is a pretty vital process in recording professionally, some things I learnt while over dubbing is to take various takes so the artist has time to warm up and also gives the options to find where it would be best to drop in, some good places to drop in is when the artist switches between clean and dirty signals. This session helped me understand to concepts of quick punching as I didn’t quite get the concept in the past. Some Tips and hints I learnt about dropping in is don’t create a playlist as it isn’t the best workflow and has a high chance to clutter the session up. An alternative to playlist is a function called matching alternatives. This process also increases the speed that you work at as you can just record over the previous take without worrying about losing any previous takes you’ve recorded, The idea of doing this is so you can quickly switch between takes to find what works best and to see what the artist prefers to fit with the song. Some other stuff I learnt was 7 on the numerical pad is to turn click on and off, Talkback is most efficient when it’s setup up on an aux track. For the two major projects I am in a group with Jacob, Wian and Dyllano and the two projects we will be doing is a press pack for a local psychedelic reggae, blues and jazz band called Villanova. For this band press pack we have been organising to do a video series which will consist behind the scenes, day to day lives for a lead up to the release of the EP and there also plans to organize a video which is being discussed with an animation student. For the second project we will be doing a post production re-make of a scene from batman and robin (1997). This scene will be the fight between batman, Robin, Poison Ivy & Bane.

Week 2 Band Recording (100 Acre Wood)

On Tuesday 9th June 2015 Rob, Jayden Tan, Fred, Paul, Jacob, Dylan, Damion and I were in a group to start recording a band called 100 Acre Wood. This was an interesting recording for me having the drums in a separate room to the bass and guitar as I haven’t done this sort of recording before and it was interesting how the Pro tool session was setup. Before any recording could be started We all split into teams to start setting up each section of the studio session. A few people were setting up the microphones for the guitar and bass players while 2 others were in with the drummer setting up around how the drums were being setup. My job in all of this was to setup the Protool session and the first thing I learnt was get a costumed to each studio and try to avoid doing any fancy shortcuts that might not be available in other studios.

This was a good refresher for me in terms of setting up a band recording as I haven’t had a good chance to setup a live band for a few weeks. Communication was the major part of all of the setting up because it was vital that we got the right inputs named correctly, If there is any dodgy cables or lose of signal, volume testing which was a bit of a pain at the start due to some complications but in the end got it sorted with the help of my fellow group members. Things I forgot to do were colour co-ordinate the tracks for easier viewing, Switch around the headphones sends so the drummer was receiving mix A while the bass and guitar players were receiving mix B. One thing that did come in handy was the talkback being run through Aux tracks so that the channel will remain open and will not record any data.

An Interesting Article

After having a browse through Melissa Pons - The sound Design Process WordPress blog I found a particular blog post talking about a much debatable question, To work for free or not to work for free - That is the question, But it shouldn’t . . .

What got me interested in this blog was the fact of pointing out a question I do ask myself and when is the right time to make a decision. This blog does point out very good points such as Time is money which talks about the love of the craft but also the cost of necessary items such as bills, food, rent/mortgage and the costs of buying gear and products to help with quality of the craft. Another good point that was addressed was the point about being the professional or being the cool guy, This talks about the average you could charge over daily or hourly rates, or if you would even charge at all either labeling you to be the cool guy that people can waste time around and literally cause a whole day to be nothing but minimal work or you can be the professional guy who sets a decent hourly or daily rate causing the customer of your service to smarten up about time management which leads in to become better work. The last really good point that this blog post points out is where do we get the experience from. This is a good point considering you can’t charge ridiculous amounts of money if your only just learning certain aspects but you can’t always do work for free, the point the blog post points out that doing stuff for your best friends is a good place to keep the majority of your free work.

What I enjoyed most about this blog was the fact it highlighted the question and giving one answer where I answered each question with my own answer and I would expand what was said through the blog. The one downer of this blog post was the fact it was one-sided and did’t explore both sides of the question. A lot more effort could have been put into this and some research about what Is a better starting point.

This blog will list the steps I went through to create the Sci-Fi Vehicle your listening to. I did this sound with Samples and a few audio-suite effects such as reverse and pitch shifting. All this was done in ProTools 11.

Step 1: Finding the samples

First things first I did was look through all the samples I have in my sample bank to find any sounds similar to a heavy Sci-Fi truck. The sounds I ended up looking for were various car sounds, electric car shifting gears, low earth moving sounds, metal sounds and some sound effects.

Step 2: Creating the entering of the vehicle

To create the ignition, door opening and power on sounds I imported all samples and sounds I took from the sample bank into Protools so I could get an idea of what sounds fit together and what sounds didn’t belong. I cut each of this samples from other samples and used fades and nudging to have all the sounds flow fluent. The sounds used were car doors opening and shutting, Car reving, Power up sound, Metal latches and a car engine.

Step 3: Starting to create the moving Vehicle

This is the step that the sound of the vehicle starts to take shape. I worked around the sounds I did in the previous step which also helped with the arrangement of other sounds that were ready to be imported. The first thing to create the driving effect of the vehicle I took the electric car shifting sample and duplicated 5 times to replicate a gearbox. To give the effect of the gear shifting sound I took each duplicated sample and used the plugin Pitch II through AudioSuite, through this plugin I pitched the sample up a semitone and repeated this process till all the samples sounded that slightly different pitch to the others. After this process I added a earth moving sample which gave the real low end which gave the impression of a heavy vehicle moving at a high speed.

Step 4: A little bit of workflow tidying up

This Step was to clean up the session and group any sounds together so if anything unexpected happens like moving a sound on accident you don’t mess up the whole arrangement and it keeps it easier naming things if you only have a group instead of lots of individuals sounds. This also stops all sounds that are less then a second long to be lost amongst all the other sounds. This is a good step to follow if you use lots and lots of samples or you chop up audio into little samples for rearrangement.

Step 5: The metal sounds and the Sound Effects

After creating the moving and shifting sound I started to work on the metal sounds, squeaking to show the vehicle needs a maintenance check up, and sound effects to give it the real Sci-Fi feel. To create the metal sounds I used more than one metal sample and I did some audio processing such reverse, pitch shifting and time stretching. With the samples like the squeaks and metal bangs I used AudioSuite to Pitch shift each sample differently so it wouldn’t sound repetitive. I used another sample which was a piece of metal circling the ground which sounded great when I time stretched it for the duration of the gear shifting.

For the Sound effects I used a energy cannon, Explosion and car braking to give the finishing touches on the sound. The energy cannon was to give a feel the vehicle being chased and after the cannon shot the explosion was the indictor that pursuing vehicle was shot and exploded. To give this effect I duplicated the sample and reversed it to give a charging up effect and with the explosion I layered the sound with to different explosion sounds. The braking at the end gave the effect that the vehicle was about to crash into another vehicle or run into pedestrians which gave the scenery to be in the streets or a country town.

Step 6: Cleaning up the session

This step is another clean up step before the proper mixing step for the the sound overall. In this step I adjusted only very few volumes to give variations in the sounds and the I would group all the sounds together so I wouldn’t lose any arrangement and So everything was named nice and neat.

Step 7: the Final Mix

This step is the final step to creating this sound and this is were all the volume and individual sounds would be nudged into place to create the final product. In this step I really brought down some of the sounds so they wouldn’t clip of be hurtful to the ears.

Week 13

This week is the final week of the trimester and was the week that my projects were all finished. My main projects were a sample pack and Post production task. On Wednesday 6th of May I presented my projects where I could also see what I needed to do for my last Studio session for this project.

Post Production

My post production task was the absolute focus for this week as I wanted to perfect it with all techniques I learnt through a video series on Lynda and a quick video about the importance of automation in post production and the essence it gives to the final mix. The Lyda course I watched was an overview for Audio for Video and Film which discussed techniques and other essential points about post production sharpening my knowledge. Due to my final mix missing some key points and sounds I searched Youtube and found some videos which helped with production. One video was talking about layering Impact sounds and what I took from this was layering some samples and instrument sounds from Kontakt which gave me the sound I was looking for on multiple occasions. Another Video I searched was about creating sword hits sounds for a game but instead I took the knowledge and applied to video and with the help of Jayden we create similar but unique sounds which then I layered again with samples and instruments form Kontakt. One video I searched but didn’t help with the sound I was looking for was using a leg of ham to create punching sounds.

My final mixdown of the post production went so smoothly I had it finished quicker than I can say “Time to finish this production”, Some major parts I changed compared to the presentation was the score volume, some of the foley volume, some changes and additions such as impact sounds. Automation became a big thing in the end for the final mix adjusting the volume of major parts such as Dialogue.

Live Sound Featuring Rob, Tom Ward, Taryn, Kevin & Dyllano

This week we had to set up a gig in a different environment to what we were used to and the knowledge we learnt over the trimester about live sound to fully setup and record a live band. The morning was early when we started packing the truck with all the live equipment we needed to setup for the band which took little over an hour. When we got there none of us were messing around we started setting up quickly so the band were ready to play at 12:30. My main job was connecting all the cords for speakers, monitors, mics, amps & multicores and making sure all the connections are right and working, This took me the majority of the time during the set up stage. My next role was helping Tom with the monitor desk and learn the ins and outs of what to do when giving the band what they want to listen to through monitor pointed towards them. The recording and gig when really well and nothing drastically went wrong.

Week 12

This week my main focus was doing the final mixing of my score and ADR for my post production project and organising my folders so I don’t get lost and lose any progress I’ve made.

Song Analysis

My song analysis are 95% done and are ready for some final touches and minor edits. The songs I analysed were Love the way you Lie performed by Eminem and Rihanna, See you again performed by Wiz Khalifa & Charlie Ruth and my final song I analysed was Cheerleader performed by Omi. The program I used for this task had various issues and caused some confusion but did it’s job in the end.

Post Production

My post production task is going extremely well as I have fully finished my score and fixed it up from my previous WIP, I have also changed an instrument due to previous one giving a more happy vibe that I wasn’t going for and my ADR is pretty much fully finished and just needs to be mixed according to all the other elements of the mix and I also created an atmospheric for the conscious part of the clip and some other sound design elements such as the power up. My main focus for Wednesday is getting the foley almost perfect for presentation then absolutely perfect for the hand in on Friday. I have a studio session on Wednesday from 2 - 10 working on elements that need working on. In the above picture is my assignments organised into various folders for easy navigation.

Helping others

Over the week I helped Jacob with his post production project such as ADR tune up, creating foley and mixing the music for the clip. I helped with the mix on Monday adjusting levels, creating sounds such as shots, atmospheric sounds and the automation of the clip.

Week 11 This week was a busy week for me due to various tasks I’ve done within the week. This week I also encountered a problem with one of my sessions which was fixed easily enough, I helped Jacob Herbert with his ADR session for hid project. I worked on mixing foley, fixing ADR, creating score for my post production project where I was able to create my first WIP which needs some improvements.

My post production project is advancing quite well and is progressing faster than I thought it would. I’ve almost finished my score as I need to make a few tweaks to volume and automation, effects on vocals & some instruments need to be changed. On Friday I mixed and layered some of my foley adjusting levels, making sure it’s all in time, creating realistic sounds. I mainly worked on the sword foley this session by layering daggers and metal sounds Jayden Tan helped me create the previous week. This was also a good time to reference my sessions on studio speakers. For my ADR I had Jayden Tan help me with some EQ and achieving better quality ADR, I also worked on turning down the grunts, huffs and puffs to fit better with each scene. My WIP I uploaded to youtube which is unlisted at the moment consists of my ADR, foley and score which hasn’t been mixed properly yet but to show what sounds are there and whats missing and to see if the score fits well with scene. Jayden Tan has been a massive help with my project during all stages up to my last studio session mixing foley. The one problem I had was the Score session would always run out of RAM or CPU power and take over 30 minutes to load. To counter this I created another session for the drums and split the one MIDI track into three as shown in picture above which also gave me better sounding drums and I wouldn’t be interrupted with Dialog boxes.

Peace Track

For the Peace track, this was the last week for it to be mixed and handed in for mastering. We got to show a headphone mix on Wednesday for some last minute feedback before we went into the TLA studio on Thursday to reference and make any final tweaks to the track. Rob D’Leno joined us for this session and gave us an experience pair of ears to finalise our mix.
