14th May Project Support & Development
Thanks to the one to one support I have received from Stephen I have now managed to complete the basic design for the project and got everything working correctly to here. The next step is to export the project as a full application and then to complete my video showing how it works. I am really pleased to have managed to achieve getting it working as it has taken a lot of time and effort, I have found working with Max generally a very difficult thing for my way of working however overcoming that and getting a working project will be very satisfying in the end.
April 23rd Project Support & Development
I have been working with my tutor Stephen to develop the code behind my ideas and to progress my project towards completion. I have managed to add the code for a sampler and drum sequencer into my random drum machine project and connected it, the next step is to design the interface and ensure everything is connected correctly, I have also now added extra functionality to the drum sequencer which allows the user to create random sequences.
20th February 2020
After completing all of my workshop work I have now begun working on my end of year Max project which will be a generative Drum Machine. I have already set out the planning stages and will be building upon my previous basic random drum generator and plan to add functionality for a sequencer and sampler as well as re design the interface to look more user friendly and to add as many functions as possible.
Peer Review Assessment
26th November 2020
For the peer review we were given 5 other projects to assess and I found this helpful for seeing the differences between peoples work and how they have progressed and extended their various projects in their own unique way, and its also useful to get ideas from other people’s work.
Workshop 1 & 2 Submission
20th November 2020
After attending every Max MSP additional workshop that has taken place so far on the course I have managed to complete the entirety of workshops 1 & 2 including their extension tasks, this has now been submitted ahead of time and below I have included the supporting documentation notes from my submission.
Taken from my Max MSP Workshop Supporting Documentation
‘In my workshop folder you will find the first two workshop patches fully completed along with the extension tasks, you can see images below to support this.
*above* Recording & Basic Effects
*above* Sampler & Generative Drum Machine
*below* For the expansion task on the first workshop I made a generative drum machine which I then successfully placed into the workshop 1 task space…
I have also completed a Vector Synthesis Oblique Scale Generator (synthesizer) which I have included as a separate patch as extra work within the same compressed folder, please open it and take a look I have decided not to add an image of it here to keep everything onto one page.’
Consolidation Week
15th November 2020
During consolidation week I have been working on a variety of Max patches and furthering my knowledge through online tutorials and through digging through the code from already created patches...
I have now completed the two workshop patches and additional tasks that were for us to complete in our own time and have grouped a folder on my hard drive and google drive with all the samples/documentation/patch files ready for submission.
Vector Synthesis - Oblique Scale Generator
8th November 2020
Today I followed a tutorial on how to create a Oblique Scale generator using a form of Vector Synthesis through Max MSP... I will be adding this into my plug-in which is aiming to have multiple functions...

Generative Drum Machine in Max MSP
7th November 2020
I made a Generative Drum Machine app/plug-in using Max MSP today, gave it a basic design and 4 options to add to the sequencer so far which includes a Kick, Snare, Hat & Crash... I will continue to work on this and develop it further below are the relevant images:
Making a Random Instrument/Music scale generator in Max MSP
6th November 2020
For today’s task we had to create a Max patcher that would generate random chords from a pre-defined music scale and then add extra functionality to it including a volume and pitch slider as well as the ability to change randomly the selected instrument. I am now working on the homework task which is to connect the working patch to a DAW (mine is Ableton) and to do so on a windows machine like mine I will need to follow some additional steps to bridge Ableton and Max... Below is an image of my first completed working patcher prior to adding the final link to the DAW, all fully working.
Max MSP Workshop (Week 3)
30th October 2020
Today we were given a demonstration on a huge multitude of functions and applications within the Max MSP workspace, One of the tasks which was to tag certain functions with their descriptions was simple enough but the bulk of the task today was extremely detailed concerning the building of loopers specifically and focused a lot on creating audio inputs within Max as part of that, there was so much that we learnt today I couldnt possibly put it all into one post but it was great to dive into more Max details as well as understanding focally that we will need to learn more than anything what Max is useful to us for as musicians and how we can benefit ourselves with it, for example for myself I think the a lot of the functionality surrounding MIDI will be far more beneficial to the bulk of my musical activity, my workflow is mainly composing music in Ableton.
Max MSP Simpler/Sampler Task
23rd October 2020
Today we were given a demonstration in Max MSP on how to create a basic Simpler/Sampler. I found it really useful because I have used a simpler/sampler tool many times in Ableton and so im very familiar with what they are used for and how they operate so being able to see it recreated within Max was a great way for a lot of the more in depth information to sink in... I am working on furthering my Max knowledge through online tutorials and making a sampler...
(Image is the basic work in progress I had by the end of the class although I still need to finish some stuff on it that I didnt get working)
Modular Synth & Max MSP Demo
Today for our weekly Face to Face session we received a demonstration of how one of the Modular Synthesizer’s from the studio operates and some deeper understanding of the differences in waveforms that synths can produce, as well as detail on the specific method of operation for a physical modular synth through a sequencer… I am a huge fan of old school analog sounds in general and modular synths are something I want to not just learn but hopefully master in some sense one day… We also had a Max demonstration and this was really helpful for taking the first few steps in understanding the software in more detail and I am already working hard to get to grips with it as fast as possible through online tutorials as well. I have set up one to one, face to face sessions to learn in more detail on this.
Annoyances of Ableton
Annoyances of AbletonAbleton is by far my favourite DAW and I have used it extensively and for many years so although I know its strengths I do also know that sometimes it can be slightly counter-intuitive, the most annoying thing I have encountered in Albeton over the years is certainly the issues that can arise concerning the input and output latency for MIDI keyboards, which can be really confusing if you dont understand how to fix it when issues arise... For the first few years that I used Ableton I had used a Mac and the latency had always been automatically adjusted however once I switched to Windows systems I realised that there was massive input delay on my keyboard, it took me quite a while to figure out how the latency adjustments can fix this in preferences and nowadays I am able to fix this issue if it ever arises very quickly, however to the average user this would take a very long time to overcome if the issue did come up.
My first patch in Max after following the tutorial, very excited to learn this software...
Please use this as a space to throw up inspirations and ideas you would like to explore on the unit!
