Home Sweet Home | Barbara + Jim
"One last chance to get out of this, Mr. Gordon...first spot of paint means this place is ours and you are officially stuck with me."
"May I just say that some days I have the urge to set fire to the GCPD and then flee to never be seen or heard from again? Don't tell Jim I said that..."
"Oh, hun, I would help you pour the gasoline," Barbara replied, smirking. "And don't tell Jim I said that either. But until that day...how're you holding up?"
"He wonât let me go out with Jason, just because heâs nineteen."
"No-scratch that. He will, he just wants a patrol to follow us!"
âWhy are you bothered by the patrol? Is there something you donât want us to see?â
"Jason Bard? And Jim, a patrol car, really?"
     âNo. No. Donât 'moom' me.â
âSheâll agree with me, she knows that two years is a lotâ
"What are you two shouting about? I could hear you from outside."
"Just flip a coin. Thatâs heads or tails. Weâd need fifty coins. And then fifty more. Fifty-Fifty." "Seriously?" "And then my computer can analyse it with science.â
Guys can we just take a moment to apreciate this flawless woman :â)
"I'm afraid what I need to discuss with him, is strictly between him and I... I apologize mrs Gordon..."
The riddler paused, trying to think of what he could say, about who he was. And just decided to spare any lies. "...I'm Edward Nygma"
The crease in her brow only hardened more as he refused her first request. She had already worked out his most likely criminal background. But Gotham didn't really hide its crime. So there had to be something else that was worse; Barbara tried not to let the idea twist her gut too much.
Finally when he introduced himself a small light-bulb clicked on. It wasn't much but she knew the name. One of the countless nights where neither of them had been able to sleep, when she glanced through the files that Jim had sprawled out on their bed. Edward Nygma. He was known as the Riddler. A certifiable genius and possible psychopath.
"O-Oh..." The short word escaped her lips as she stared back at him still hovering in her door and she found herself torn. One part said to batten down the hatches and kick him out on his ass. The other knew he had to be desperate if he'd turned up here like this. "You can stay...but I keep this with me..." She reached over as she spoke and took hold of the small bottle of mace she kept on her keys. "Deal?"
"Oracle? Oh, you meanâŚumâŚnot reallyâŚI assume you are a friend of hers? A family member perhaps?â
"Oh, I assumed...now I'm embarrassed," she replied, letting out a soft laugh. Raven looked to be about Babs's age and they didn't often get unknown visitors to the Gordon household. At least, she had known the name Oracle otherwise that would have been a much messier explanation. "Her mother, actually. Uninformed about all this."
"No, no, nothing," Babs quickly replied, shaking her head. She stood there for a moment before caving, unable to deny her worries. "What would you do if you had the chance to save someone⌠but it would put you in danger?"
Barbara waited patiently as her daughter brushed it off; it was a mother sixth sense, she knew she'd give in and talk about it. And sure enough a beat of silence later and she was speaking.
Her brow furrowed slightly, wondering what this was all about, but knowing that if she questioned it, Babs would shut in on herself. It was easier to keep the talk hypothetical for now.
"Speaking for myself? If I knew I had a real shot at saving someone...I'd take it. Speaking as your mother, I-I have to heed you to really think about it but I also have to...trust you." She smiled softly, the worry still evident in her eyes. "Should I be worried?"
đš â; âOh~! So youâre not entirely clueless.â Cooed the misanthropist, cleaning her nails idly as she smirked up at the Commissionerâs wife from beneath a lush curtain of dark lashes. "Then again, if you married Gordon, I guess you couldnât be too stupidâŚâ
"How sweet of you to say..." Barbara clenched her jaw slightly, cocking an eyebrow. She was worried. Of course she was. Despite being the commissioner's wife it wasn't every day that you had some criminal break into your house. However, if the woman had simply come to make snide comments, Barbara wasn't interested. "You interested in borrowing a cup of sugar? I have to say, most people knock first...if you're looking for my husband you'd have better luck at the police station."
It hadnât always been this way. Before her sickness progressed to such an extreme state sheâd been very social, even if her marriage to Victor had downplayed it somewhat. Since sheâd been dating him really, he was the one who took up the majority of her time. But they were happy, others were happy, they kept in contact, and everything was generally good. Sheâd only took to secluding herself from others during her husbandâs trial. After she learned just how cruel people could beâ unfortunately, even those sheâd counted among her friends.
Barbara was different, though. Nora adored Barbara and the entire Gordon family, really. Ushering her inside, she closed and locked the door behind her out of habit, buttoned her sweater as unobtrusively as possible and flashed a smile. "Fine, Iâm fineâ Iâve missed you too. And the kids, andâ" About to mention Jim, sheâd heard of the problems theyâd been having and stopped herself short, focusing instead on Barbaraâs son. Her godson, Jimmy. "Jimmy, howâs he doing?"
Jim never had a problem with Nora, not outwardly. Still there was an underlying tension after everything that happened; it was clear to Barbara that he'd been wary of their friendship when Victor all but vanished into a life of crime. Still Barbara couldn't look at her friend in those terms. She had no idea the struggles of what had happened between Nora and Victor. Besides, she wasn't as strong. Even now with Jim's loyalty to the force, she felt her support waning.
She focused on the glint of her smile and not the paranoid click of the locks. She focused on the tone of her voice and not the somewhat distant look in her eyes. Nora was one of her dear friends and no matter what she'd be there.
"He's good. Really good. Way too smart. Him and Babs can talk circles around me. He's sharp as a tack too. Reading, writing, his brain has twelve things going on at once in the best possible way." Barbara smiled fondly as she talked about Jimmy. She knew Nora adored her godson and loved hearing that he was doing well. Barbara knew part of that was Nora's own doing. She had a way of bringing him out of his shell that his parents had never quite mastered. Of course, what pre-teen wanted to talk to their parents?
âNo!â He said perhaps a bit too rushed, before sinking back into pretend confidence. âI wouldnât want to bother him at workâŚit just.â He sighed, trying to figure out what to say.
He decided to go with the truth. ââŚI need his help. Preferably without the rest of the law involvedâŚmy life is in danger please Mrs Gordon, what time is he off? JustâŚdonât⌠Call⌠The police.â He didnât care if he was giving himself away now.
Barbara jumped a bit at his outburst, instantly on edge. Still the way he slunk back into himself, eased her in the smallest ways. It had been an open window for him to be aggressive but instead, he seemed more nervous of her like a frightened animal.
"His help...?" The question trailed off because he seemed to be making no sense. A man with his life in danger, looking for Jim Gordon, and yet his one request was that she keep the police out of it? Still she had a soft heart which would most likely kill her in the end and she nodded. "Fine, no police, but you tell me who you are...what you need with my husband..."
"Bruce, then, if only to keep things fair." Bruce pulled off his sun-glasses. "If you donât mind the company, not at all." He gave her one of his award winning smiles.Â
"Bruce it is then," she replied, smiling as she shifted back to let him walk in, closing the door behind them both. Barbara led them into the kitchen where a glass of wine sat on the counter-top next to an easel. A flurry of colored paints scattered across it.
"I could always use company. I think I'm starting to go stir-crazy," she laughed, depositing a few empty plates into the sink. It wasn't every day she had a billionaire in the house. "Something to drink?"
"Mrs. Gordon. AÂ pleasure as always." Bruce smiled. "I was just looking for Jim. Thatâs all. If he not here I can come back."Â
"Barbara, please, I don't like to feel that old," she responds with a breath of a laugh. She nods back into the house, opening the door a bit more. "He just ran back to grab something from the office. Should be back soon if you feel like waiting..."
mrs-gordon, officerdgrayson , hulksdontdoweak stepped  into the city.
This city was always busy, day or night, rain or shine. Especially shine. Gotham rarely got a large amount of sunshine and warmth,so when it did it seemed everyone came out of their little caves to socialize. Even the fatal feline herself. Even if it wasnât in costume.
Her back bent, the dark haired woman inspected the newspaper stand in front of her, looking for anything interesting. There had been an alarming lack of new jewel shipments lately. If she hadnât been so occupied with this, she probably would have noticed the being trying to move past her before they had to tap her shoulder. Is there really not enough street to pass?
"Oh,sorry. Am I in your way?"Â
Barbara felt rude tapping the woman on the shoulder but she'd have felt ruder if she'd simply shoved past. She smiled slightly as Selina turned around; something in her mind sparked but she couldn't place the face. She brushed it off, speaking instead.
"No, no, well...yes, but I just wanted to grab one of the papers in front of you," she said, reaching up a bit to snatch one. "Who doesn't love to spend money to read bad news, hmm?"
