My first fic, be kind. Also, sorry itâs a sad one. I lost my brother and I wrote this as a cathartic thing for myself. đ
You stared numbly at the comm screen after the feed was ended. Numb. Nothing. Baffled. You couldnât believe what youâd just heard. And, you didnât really blame the admiral for disconnecting, after your disconcerting silence for over 60 seconds.
Then.. like lightning, it hits you.
Pain. Despair. So much that you canât breathe. Tears, falling hot and fast down your face. Gasping for breathe, you shuffle your hand clumsily on the edge of your desk in your quarters, accidentally knocking your glass of water off. The crash of the breaking glass making you jump.
You didnât realize that you were struggling for breath, until Leonard walked into the room, and caught sight of you.
âDarlinâ? I heard something break, what happââ He began. He gasped hard and so quick, the sound sharp as the air hissed through his teeth.
When his eyes met yours you screamed, âLen!â
He rushed over to you, knelt and put his hands on your upper arms, gripping firmly but not too tight.
âBaby, whatâs wrong? What happened?â He asked, his hands going up and down, trying to comfort you, despite not knowing what the problem was.
You still couldnât draw breath, between crying, and trying to tell him what the admiral had just told you. He didnât wait for you to respond, he pulled you into his chest and hugged tightly, warm hands on your back.
His eyes. You wanted to see his eyes, those beautiful blue eyes. So you pulled back, and tried to tell him what had just brought your world crashing down around you.
âMy.. my........ Admrial Kelley sent me a restricted communication. He said... he said...â and you burst into tears again, not being able to put into words something so awful.
Leonard gently pulled you into him again, and kissed you on the forehead.
âIâm here, darlinâ, Iâm here. I know itâs hard, tell me what Kelley said.â He said in such a sweet tone that it made your chest clench in on itself again.
âItâs my brother... he... Kelley said there was a containment breach, and he... he sustained heavy injuries and... and...â the tears coming hotter and faster again.
âHeâs dead!â You screamed into the space between you and him. You collapsed into him and he brought one hand up to your head, mussing into your hair, to rest one of his fingers below your ear, feeling for your pulse.
âOh, (Y/N) baby Iâm so sorry! Iâm here for you, Iâm here. Iâve got you.â He crooned as you cried, shook and surely ruined the front of his medical tunic. Your body wracked with sobs, he didnât complain about how long it went on. After a minute or so he rocked you from side to side for a moment. âOh, darlinâ Iâm so sorry.â
You started to hyperventilate, breathing irregularly and felt lightheaded. Leonard was paying attention, and he could tell. He gently pushed you back, and palmed your face in both of his hands.
âHey, hey (Y/N) I need you to breathe for me, can you do that? I know itâs hard. Just try for me. He put his hand on your chest, not at all sexual in this moment, out of concern, and to help ground you. âBreathe with me, okay? In.. 2...3, and out 2... 3..â
He let his chest swell with air, and you moved your hand to cover his on your sternum. Trying to follow his lead you took a staggering breath.
When you still had trouble, he took one of your hands and put it on his own, mirroring you, and you felt his chest expand with breath. âBreathe, baby, breathe.â He crooned, gently.
He tried valiantly to help you regulate your breathing, but the all-consuming grief threatened to asphyxiate you.
âGoddamnit.â He growled. You knew he wasnât mad at you, only his helplessness in the situation. He hefted you up to a standing position, and lifted you behind the knees, bridal style. There was some vague guilt for making him work so hard to help you, but the despair was so thick, you couldnât think beyond this moment, this second that you were breathing in.
He took you into the bathroom, and turned on the water shower, instead of the sonic. Still holding you, he carried you both into the spray, not even stopping to remove any of yours, or his clothing. He carefully leaned against the wall, and slid you both to a seated position, you across his lap.
He grasped your face with one hand, âLook at me, (Y/N) look.â He said, firmly.
âLen!â You gasped out, seemingly only capable of saying that sweet shortened version of his name you loved so.
âLook at me! Youâre going to get through this. I will get you through this. Iâm here. Just breathe. Iâm here. Iâll always be here. Just feel the spray, and try to calm down, I know itâs hard.â
He held you. He held you as you gasped, and tried to fight with the crushing emotions you felt at this crippling loss. Almost physically wrestling with it, fingers clutching into his blue medical uniform, he held you.
Once the shower beeped itâs warning that your water ration for the shower were almost gone, he gently eased you up, and took you into the bedroom, dressed you in your softest leisure clothes, and drew you towards the bed.
He got in first, and pulled you in after, right up against his chest. When the tears that never really let up, only had slowed, renewed their tracks down your face, he didnât complain. Instead he began stroking your hair.
He held you. You didnât know what you needed or wanted, but he did. And he knew you wanted him there, with his arms around you.
i hope you donât let the numbness convince you this is where youâll be forever. you donât want to be here or live like this, i know, but i hope youâre still hanging on right now because i want you to live to see the day when you feel happy. i want you to realize in the moment someday that youâve made it so far, and you no longer wish to just disappear because youâre right where you want to be. tonight it hurts and aches. everything is crumbling around you and it feels like too much. it always feels like too, too much. but when the dark cloud lifts, even if only for a second, i want you to see whatâs on the other side.
You walk into sickbay with some files to deliver to McCoy, but what you see as you enter is a sorry sight indeed. Bones has a tendency to overwork himself, and today is no exception. His head rests on his palm, elbow propped up on the desk, and there are large bags under his eyes. In truth, he looks exhausted.
You go to hand him the files, and he looks up at you with a tired smile. "Thanks, Lieutenant, I'll get right on those."
As he reaches out to take them, however, you move them out of his reach, chastising him, "Oh no, you won't. You need a break, Doctor."
He groans, reaching out for the files again. "Would you just-" You swap them to your other hand. "Hand me the damn-" You hold them above your head. He gives up and folds his arms, glaring up at you from his seat at his desk.
"No, Leonard. Not until you've had a break. Please, for me?" You give him your most exaggerated puppy dog eyes. He knows you're just joking around, but somehow it works on him anyway.
He sighs, rolling his eyes in mock annoyance. "Alright. Alright, you win. I'm certainly not getting any work done until you leave anyhow."
You beam at him. "Thank you, Bones. I'm very happy to hear that." You put the files down and take his face in both your hands. "You'll work yourself into the ground if you're not careful."
You run your thumbs over his cheeks, and he can't help but close his eyes. "You're too good to me, you know that? I don't deserve you," he mutters.
"Hush, now. Don't be silly. Of course you do." You move closer, sliding one of your arms around his shoulders while your other hand presses his head against your body. He gives a pleasantly surprised hum and wraps his arms around your waist. "You ought to take better care of yourself. You're such a hypocrite," you tease.
He chuckles. "I suppose I am." You run your fingers through his hair, and he sighs, leaning more of his body weight against you. "It's probably about time someone called me out on it," he mumbles. You can feel his muscles beginning to relax, the tension in his body finally releasing. You tighten your grip, holding him more firmly against you, rocking the two of you back and forth. "M'gonna fall asleep if you're not careful," he slurs his words a little when he speaks, highlighting his point.
"Well, we can't have that now, can we?" you reply, dropping your hands down to his shoulders and pushing him away a little, "You're still on the clock." He grumbles for a moment until he sees you leaning down to kiss his forehead. You pull back to look him in the eyes. "Promise me you'll go easier on yourself?"
He gazes up at you, eyes shining with affection and perhaps some tears, though you pretend not to notice. "I will, I promise." Then, with a hint of that textbook Bones sarcasm, he adds, "Doctor's orders."
"Good." You give his shoulder a squeeze before stepping back, arms dropping to your sides. As you leave the room, you turn back to point at him. "You'd better!"
He picks the files up, smiling to himself. For the rest of the day, he is in an uncharacteristically good mood, and no one can figure out why.
To say things weren't going well would be the understatement of the century. It was supposed to be an easy mission, but that's always how these stories start, huh?
The scanners indicated a series of underground caverns, ones that appeared artificial. Ruins that the archaeology department just couldn't go without exploring. Scanners also claimed there were no life forms within these caverns. The scanners were wrong.
You were the head of security aboard the USS Enterprise. As such, it was your duty to ensure the safety of the crew and perform a risk assessment. Chief Medical Officer McCoy joined you to run some scans, testing for biohazards that would put the ship at risk. Also accompanying you were two other security officers, two engineers to check the structural integrity of the tunnels, a biology officer, and an archaeology officer.
Once the entrance was found, your team discovered that the caverns were actually a sprawling ancient city built in a massive cave system. You also discovered that your communicators weren't working the deeper you traversed the city. If only that were the end of your worries. Two hours into the excursion, a loud echo of rubble falling came from the direction of the entrance. And if that wasn't enough, you were swiftly and brutally attacked by a sizable group of strangers who must have been using the city as a hideout.
In the pandemonium that followed, part of the ceiling came down and cut you off from the rest of the team. It was just you and Dr. McCoy, lost in a labyrinth of ancient ruins and unmapped caves. The doctor was a smart man, a man you greatly respected, a man you were proud to call a friend (for the most part). But he was the last person you would want to be trapped underground with. Complaints came to him as easily as breathing and with every wrong turn, his agitation only grew worse.
"I can't believe this, we just had to explore the underground city and for what? What could we possibly gain from coming down here?" Leonard grumbled.
"Knowledge about a lost civilization? Insight into what it takes for an intelligent species to naturally go extinct?" You suggested as you led him deeper into the city, careful to avoid any traps the armed strangers might have set for you.
"Who cares?! This place is a deathtrap, a goddamned asthma attack waiting to happen! We had no business sticking our nose where it didn't belong, and where did it get us?! I'll tell ya where! Trapped miles underground with an armada of murderous cave dwellers, with no way of contacting the ship!"
"Why don't you complain a little louder doctor, I can still hear myself think. And while you're at it, how about you go ahead and alert all our enemies to our exact location." You snapped, keeping your voice down despite the frustration.
Leonard huffed and looked away from you.
"Look..." You sighed, "I know this situation sucks, but losing our heads isn't going to get us out of here. I'm doing everything in my power to find our team and get back to the ship. I need you to have a little faith in me for once. Can you manage that?" You asked as calmly as possible.
"What the hell do you mean, for once?" Leonard frowned.
You hesitated, unsure if you really wanted to open that can of worms, but he had already worn down your patience. You gave in. "Come on Doctor, it's no secret you have zero trust in me as the Chief Security Officer."
"That's not-"
"There's no point in denying it now. I mean, all you ever do is criticize my work and admonish me for being reckless." You stated cooly, keeping your eyes fixed on the path before you.
"Well, what do you expect me to do when you come back from half your missions with cuts and bruises?" McCoy groused.
"I expect you to do your job and heal me, not tell me how to do mine. I'm a security officer, Injuries are par for the course I'm afraid."
"Doesn't mean you have to throw caution to the wind every chance you get. You volunteer for every single dangerous situation you can find and act surprised when it goes wrong! Seriously, it's like you and Jim have this intense, cosmic desire to play the goddamned hero and be a general pain in my ass. Has it ever crossed your mind that maybe seeing you like that bothers me?"
"You know what bothers me doctor?" You turned to look at him. "The fact that I have undergone rigorous self defense training in four kinds of martial arts, various forms of aerial combat, tech weapons, as well as training in tracking, risk assessment, reconnaissance, and mediation; yet, you still think so lowly of me as an officer that you think I'm the type of person who throws caution to the wind. I'm not careless, I don't take unnecessary risks. I want to live for a long time, but more than that, I want you and the crew to live for a long time. If that means I get bumped around every so often, that's fine by me. Of course I volunteer for all the missions. I'm the Chief Security Officer. If I wasn't the most qualified person for the job, I wouldn't be the CSO." An unreadable expression passed over Leonard's face as you spoke. "Now I'm going to do what I came down here for, and you're just going to have to be okay with that because I don't know what else I can say to get you to believe in me."
A muscle feathered in Leonard's jaw as you turned around and started walking again. The two of you had your fair share of lighthearted quarreling before, but you had never been so... angry at him.
You were right of course, danger was a part of your job and it wasn't fair of him to criticize you for being dedicated. The ship has known a lot less casualties since you arrived. In fact, your presence has made his job easier. But every time you returned to the ship battered and bleeding, Leonard grew more afraid that next time you wouldn't come back at all.
Bones had allowed his feelings for you to get in the way of his professionalism, and if your reaction was anything to go by, perhaps even your friendship as well.
You normally got along quite well. You'd share meals during breaks and join him after hours for a drink. Leonard always found it strange you never talked about your work with him, but he always chalked it up to you just needing a break from your job. Instead you both talked about your hobbies, plans for the future, memories from the past, pretty much anything and everything but your job. The only times you ever had disagreements were when you came back hurt after a mission. He always assumed you understood that his comments about your recklessness came from a place of care and concern. In retrospect, it was a stupid thing to assume.
Leonard needed to apologize, to clear up this terrible misunderstanding before your resentment grew into something unfixable.
"Y/N, I'm-"
"Shh-" You froze and held your hand up, signaling him to stop.
Leonard froze as well. Everything was quiet... too quiet. His eyes darted to you. Your hands inched toward your phaser like you were anticipating an attack he had yet to detect. You stayed that way for a few moments, eyes darting this way and that. Eventually, you relaxed your shoulders and turned back to Bones with a finger to your lips. Leonard nodded and you were both on your way again.
He had never seen you in action before. In all the time you had been on the ship together, he'd never had the pleasure of seeing first hand how you dealt with a crisis on foreign soil. He could see now how you had made such a difference. You were level-headed and confident. Even after your little spat, you were doing your job to keep him safe so diligently. Bones also noticed how quiet you were. If you weren't right in front of him, he might not have even known you were there. He watched as you expertly avoided shuffling your feet and kicking rocks. He made sure to step where you were stepping, or at least he tried to.
Leonard felt the ground give under his feet and he instantly knew he fucked up.
"God dam- AHHH!" Something snapped tight around his ankle and he hit the ground hard. Leonard felt the wind being abruptly pushed from his lungs and he couldn't decide what scared him more, the rope dragging him across the ground to god knows where, or the fact he couldn't catch his breath.
"Shit!" You gasped and pulled out your phaser. "Leonard, hold on!" You sprinted after him and shot at the rope, but it was hard to hit such a small target. Then you saw his destination. There was a massive ravine at the end of the chamber. No time for thinking.
You planted your feet firmly on the ground and aimed at the rope. You clenched your jaw hard and shot.
The beam flew.
Leonard watched the light sever the rope, just in time!
He came skidding to a stop right at the lip of the cliff.
Bones was lost in a daze of adrenaline, but luckily you had the presence of mind to drag him back.
"Doctor? Len, are you okay?" You crouched beside him and took his face in your hands.
"Just peachy! What the hell happened?!" Bones groaned and sat up, with your assistance of course.
"Looks like you activated a trap, doc." You frowned.
"How's my back?" He winced.
"You got some skid marks, but it looks like your uniform did a pretty good job protecting you. I think you'll live." You said gently. Leonard administered a hypospray to himself and you helped him up.
Looking down in the chasm, you shook your head and huffed. "Looks like we're gonna have to find another way down. Why don't you take a breather and I'll look around?"
"Breather my ass," Leonard grumbled, "You just want me out of the way so I don't step on any more goddamned traps."
"Hey, you said it. Not me," You joked.
"At least have the courtesy to deny it!" He scoffed.
You laughed and handed him your communicator, "Here, yours got all busted during your tumble. Keep trying to get in contact with the Enterprise and I'll be back before you know it. Just don't touch anything. Think you can handle that?"
"Just get out of here before I schedule all your vaccinations for tomorrow." He scowled and fiddled with the communicator.
You snickered and went on your way.
Leonard grumbled to himself as he tried to get a signal. Dammit, he was a doctor! Not an engineer! After ten minutes of nothing, he huffed and ran a hand over his face. It was no use, they were in too deep. Their only hope of rescue would be that the captain realized something was off and sent a team after them.
In the meantime, he was at least happy to have some alone time with you-
"I think I found a way down," you said, startling the doctor so badly he almost jumped out of his skin.
"Dammit Y/L/N," He stood and dusted off his rear end, "You nearly gave me a heart attack."
"You say that like it's a difficult thing to accomplish," you smirked.
"You're hilarious. Why are we going down anyway, isn't that the opposite of what we want to do?" Leonard scowled.
"Down is the only direction left to go. It's not ideal, but it's all we have. I also heard talking coming from the bottom of that chasm. It's not in a language I understand, which means it's likely the cave dwellers. If they're hanging out down there, it probably means there's a path that loops back around. We'll have to keep quiet though, don't want them to know we're following."
Leonard's heart betrayed him and decided to start beating faster of its own accord. Sure, he found it really attractive when you showed off your intelligence. Of course he thought it was enticing when you spoke confidently, like the universe bowed to your whim. Did that mean he wanted to be spellbound by your endless charisma in such a dire situation? Hell, maybe he did. He wasn't even sure anymore...
"Sound good, doctor?"
He thought back to your... conversation about him having no faith in you. "Sounds great. Lead the way," he replied.
~~~
The path down was thin and arduous. The stairs could hardly be considered stairs anymore. It was more like a damp slide made of mineral buildup. Leonard was also beginning to realize he needed to do some more intense leg workouts. There was an exercise routine that all crew members were required to follow. But regardless of the shape he was in, his ass was burning! Time to up the incline on the treadmill.
You, however, were doing just fine. Not a single slip in the wet terrain. He could tell you were moving slower to keep Leonard from falling behind, which was only slightly embarrassing.
At the bottom of the ancient waterslide, there was a pool of questionable depth. Leonard cursed under his breath. The water was dark and so was everything else, even with their flashlights. They could walk right into a 400 foot drop and they wouldn't even know it. At least the waterfall flowing nearby would mostly drown out their screams.
You turned to Leonard and held your hand out to him. Thank god it was dark, you would have seen his face light up like the fourth of July! His blush only grew when you leaned in close to his ear. "Stay close. We're gonna take it slow," you whispered. He nodded and grasped your hand tight.
You waded into the freezing water and pulled McCoy along with you. Taking careful, controlled steps forward, you searched the floor for holes. The two of you moved at a snail's pace, but Leonard hardly cared. Better to be slow and steady than fast and... reckless.
You suddenly stopped, causing McCoy's chest to slam into your back. You flailed, teetering on some unseen edge. You tried to push him back, but Leonard's arms found your waist and pulled you into him.
"Dammit. Are you okay?"
"Peachy," you huffed. "Found a hole.''
"I figured," he slowly let go and tried to peer into the water. He saw nothing but darkness. Terrifying. God damned terrifying.
"How good are you at swimming?" you asked.
"Good when I can see where I'm going."
"Want to brave the waters, or go around?"
"I'd rather not have my pants and my shirt wet if I can help it."
"Go around it is."
Turns out the hole was huge. It took a long time to trace the perimeter, but eventually you ended up on the other side. You were both dripping and freezing, but at least you weren't drowning victims. Always look on the bright side.
Once you cleared the roar of the waterfall, it was back to silence. The alien voices were getting louder and louder with each step. Leonard wouldn't be surprised if they stumbled on a gaggle of them just around the corner. You kept your phaser in hand just in case. Leonard had his out as well... but he was a doctor, not a gunslinger.
The path slowly grew more steep, traveling upward like a real-life stairway to heaven. Huh... They had to go down... to go up... Leonard wondered why anyone would design a path this way. The corridor ended in a sharp turn, which you had the presence of mind to investigate before barreling in like you owned the place. There was an alcove with five unknown people of indiscernible origin. The one thing you were sure of was that they were not Human, Vulcan, Romulan, Ferengi, Klingon, or Andorian. In fact, these guys had four arms each, so you were able to rule out a great deal of species.
Normally, you would turn around and find a different route, but this was the only way forward. Leonard watched as you checked to ensure your phaser was on the stun setting. Nope, he did not like this one bit. What if you missed?! Were you really going to take on five people at once? He grabbed your arm and shook his head. You frowned and leaned into his ear once again. "There's no other way. I don't like it either... Stay back."
McCoy reluctantly did as you said. You outranked him. He didn't really have a choice. You stepped out from around the corner and shot off exactly five blasts. The doctor didn't see the beams make contact, but he did see the aftermath and... goddamn...
"Shit, darlin'," he placed his hands on his hips as he glanced over the room. "Remind me never to piss you off."
You holstered your phaser. "We should keep going... Could you give them a scan, doctor? Just to make sure I didn't... you know."
"Say no more, I'll have this done in a jiffy."
You snorted, "jiffy?"
"Don't even start."
"Adorable," you smiled and started collecting the weapons that had been haphazardly strewn on the floor.
McCoy nearly dropped his scanner.
'Come on man, get yourself together! You're a doctor for crying out loud! Act like one!'
Leonard shook his head of all thoughts regarding the implications of your one-word compliment. Instead, he focused on the readings of the scan. Oh, looks like these people are Kaviran. Kavirans are an endangered species of nomadic planet-hoppers. They're increasingly rare to find, no wonder he didn't know who they were at a glance. All five of them seemed to be in good health.
"I reckon they'll be just fine," Leonard stood and attempted to dust off his pants. It just smeared in like mud because the fabric was still damp.
"I reckon we better be on our way then," you smirked. While he was working, you hid the weapons... somewhere. Leonard was so caught up in the scans that he didn't see where you stashed them.
Leonard trailed behind you once again, but you had picked up the pace. He wasn't complaining per se, the sooner you got out of here, the better. The hard thing was realizing just how tired he was. What time was it? How long had they been down here? Surely Jim had noticed something was off by now!
McCoy cursed under his breath and pulled out your communicator he borrowed earlier... still no signal.
"Damn useless hunk of junk," the doctor grumbled.
"Still nothing?"
"Nothing. Seriously, what's the point in carrying these things around if they never work when you need them to?"
You nodded in agreement. "At least this might push Starfleet to do an overhaul of our coms technology. We needed one, like... yesterday," you chuckled.
"You can say that again... And while they're at it, they can update our ship's scanners. This place was supposed to be empty, remember?" McCoy raised an eyebrow.
"I'll be sure to put it in my report, along with a request for waterproof shoes," you grinned back at him.
"You know, I could go for a hot shower right about now," Leonard hummed.
"Head out of the clouds please, doctor."
"My head is currently as far from the clouds as it could possibly be. I'm 2,576 meters underground."
"Where'd you pull that number from?" you chuckled.
"My ass," he grumbled.
"That sounds very unsanitary, doc."
"Well, I would have pulled it out of my medical bag, but I lost it during the cave-in."
"Oh yeah, I thought you were missing somethi- Wait... where did you get the hypo from?" you turned to look at him.
"Hypo?" he asked.
"When you got caught in the trap, you gave yourself a hypospray to help with the pain. Where did you get it from?" you asked incredulously.
"Sweetheart, a good doctor always keeps a backup in his pocket. Especially when you've been a field medic as long as I have," Leonard said.
"And how long is that?" you chuckled.
"Never ask a man his age," Leonard winked. His eyes were probably playing tricks on him... but he could have swore he saw you blush. You turned away before he could confirm his suspicions.
"I'll just look it up in your file later," you teased.
"Isn't that a breach of conduct?" the doctor huffed.
"I'll be evaluating a security risk."
"Security risk?"
"Absolutely. Can't have a dinosaur operating on the crew~"
"We're the same age, smart-ass."
"Damn, doctor. You look good for your age." You turned and winked back at him.
Now it was Leonard's turn to be flustered. He opened his mouth and closed it a few times like a fish out of water, unable to form a sentence that would make even a lick of sense. McCoy finally settled on rolling his eyes and turning his attention to the cave walls. You just laughed and faced forward again.
With how you were acting, Leonard could almost believe things were normal, that he was not hundreds of feet underground. He could almost believe he was back on the Enterprise, playing darts with you in the recreation room... He could almost believe everything was okay between you.
He had been feeling it since, have a little faith in me for once, fell from your lips. McCoy had been a doctor for years, he knew what bedside manner looked like. You were trying to keep him at ease, pretending everything was fine... but it wasn't. The jokes... the smiles... they were all just tools for de-escalation. He thought through what he had said earlier about you coming back with all the cuts and bruises. He meant what he said, it does bother him... But it wasn't what he wanted to say.
He wanted to tell you that he trusts you, that he always will. He wanted to say that... that you're the bravest person he's ever met. He wanted to take it all back. Instead of calling you reckless, he should have said that seeing you in pain hurts him more than any physical wound he'd ever had.
He should have said, I'm sorry...
He could do it now. Was now the right time? When is it appropriate to apologize? When was it not? God, Leonard was such a mess. Why was it so hard to just say sorry?! It wasn't his pride getting in the way! If it was, he wouldn't even be able to admit any wrongdoing! 'Just say it you bastard! Tell them! It's on the tip of your tongue!'
"Y/N?"
"Yes, doctor?"
He didn't have time to speak. A deep, aggressive tone echoed down the dripping cave halls. It sounded like... a war horn? You turned back to look in the direction you just came from with a grave expression.
"Len, you're gonna have to hold that thought."
~~~
He couldn't quite remember when he started running, but down the narrow passage he flew, stumbling occasionally over uneven terrain. The wind screamed in his ears. Leonard was sure he had never run so fast in his life. You were right behind him, letting him set the pace, never passing him by. He wasn't sure how long he had been going for, but his lungs burned and his legs shook with every stride. He could stand for hours during surgery, but running nonstop through a cave was a whole different ballgame for him.
Leonard could hear yelling and heavy footfalls, but was unsure of which direction they were coming from. Were they being followed, or were they running into a trap? He found his answer soon enough when he skidded to a halt in front of twenty Kavirans... twenty-one actually. Then, when he thought the situation couldn't get any worse, the five Kavirans you left behind in the tunnel came up from the rear. You were boxed in. Two against twenty-six.
You pulled McCoy behind you, phaser poised to shoot at a moment's notice. It wouldn't do him much good when the cave-dwellers decided to attack, but he appreciated the sentiment.
"Humans. Lower your weapons and you will be left unharmed." One of the Kavirans said in gurgly English.
"I will not lower my weapon until your colleagues all do the same." You said cooly.
"To make this stand would be foolish. Lower your weapon," the Kaviran you assumed was the leader reiterated.
"It is against policy to lower my weapon until I have ensured the safety of the crew in my care."
"You attacked our people in our own home. You are in no place to bargain."
"You attacked us unprovoked shortly after we arrived. If we had known this place was occupied, we would have left it alone. We were on a scientific excursion. There was no intent to do you any harm-"
"And yet, five of my people have been ambushed." The leader gestured with one of his four hands to the slightly disoriented aliens behind you.
"I have no desire to fight you. Let us pass and we will leave you in peace." You seemed to realize it at the same time Leonard did. Discussion was futile. They wanted to kill you while putting in the least amount of effort possible. If you had no weapon to fight back with, what threat could you possibly pose?
"Lower your weapon," the leader scowled.
Leonard watched your shoulders tense. You raised your chin and narrowed your eyes at the Kaviran. "Doctor?" you said.
"What is it, Y/L/N?" Leonard clenched his jaw.
"Duck."
It took him a whole three-fourths of a second to register what you were asking of him, then he hit the deck.
You Immediately opened fire, taking down six Kavirans in a matter of seconds. You missed the seventh when your wrist was seized by one of the alien's long sticks, which clamped around your arm like the jaw of a beast and flipped you onto your back. You wrenched the stick out of his hand and snapped the shin of the guy beside you.
A heavy boot just barely missed your head. You ripped the weapon from your arm and swiped it under the legs of the assailant, driving your elbow into his ribs when he hit the ground.
Someone is on you. It's a mess of limbs. Four arms to your two. Your fist rattles his jaw. Once. Twice. Again.
He's on his back, your legs straddling his stomach as you wail on him. Four hands are on your shoulders. You grab two by the wrist and twist them out with a disgusting crunch.
Something burns in your shoulder as you stand. Leonard is on the ground, clawing at an alien's eyes with one hand, reaching for his phaser with the other. You grab the Kaviran by her hair and rearrange her face with your fist.
You're blinded by a sharp pain in your temple and the sound of phaser blasts barely breaks through the ringing. Bracing yourself on a rock, you catch your breath, but only for a second. A dodge, you grab the alien's stick and clock him in the stomach, then lock him in a choke hold with it. His four arms out-maneuver yours and the weapon is pulled from your hands.
Two more guys join in. A scramble for power ensues. You endure a barrage of punches. These guys are relying on arms. You force one into the wall with your shoulder and catch another in the spine with your foot.
Heavy breathing.
Shots are ringing out. The caves are dark and the only light is from the phaser, the laser guns, and the abandoned flashlights being kicked around the cave floor in the chaos.
The rest is over and your forehead clashes with an alien skull. Your side rips open on a rock as you fall to the ground, but you don't stay down for long. You decide to go for a new tactic, less hitting, more kicking.
One of them goes for a punch, you block with your forearm and bring your knee to her side before planting a swift kick to the face. The caves echo the sound of grunts and groans, fists and feet hitting flesh, and gunfire. You don't know where your phaser is, but you could really use it right about now.
Your eyes are starting to swell and everyone is starting to tire. You're relieved to see Leonard taking cover behind a rock column. You take another down, then another. Leonard is under heavy fire. If you can get the gunmen off him, then he will be free to stun the others into submission.
You run for the first gunman and surprise him with three well placed kicks, the other fires on you and misses miserably. You reward him with a broken nose and a dirt nap.
Your attention is occupied by four Kavirans, who lunge at you all at once. You're overpowered by the strength of their doubled limbs. One is holding down your arms, two more have subdued your powerful legs, and the last is destroying your face. You manage to yank one arm free to land a few hits on your main attacker, but it doesn't last long. Four hands are crushing your neck and-
Silence.
They all slump to the floor.
You lay there, too tired to fight the dead weight of the alien on top of you.
It wasn't until Leonard appeared like an angel sent from the heavens, that you finally remembered how to breathe. He pushed the guy off you and cradled your bloody face in his hands.
"Y/N? Darlin', can you hear me?"
"Loud and clear, doc," your voice came out as a dry rasp.
McCoy pulled a hypo from his pocket. "That's really good sweetheart, can you tell me where the pain is?"
"Everywhere hurts. My legs are sore, but I can walk. My head and my ribs feel the worst. Something is definitely broken." you cleared your throat.
"I'm thinkin' you're right... any numbness?"
"Yeah, some down my right arm and near my ribs and chest." you gestured with your slightly-less-injured left arm.
"Nerve damage, nothing I can do about that until we're back on the ship," Bones hung his head and sighed in defeat. That was when you noticed a small stream of blood trickling down the side of his face. You reached up and tenderly tried to brush it away with your thumb, but you only managed to smear it.
"You're hurt... I'm sorry-" you started.
"I'm hurt?! You-" Leonard's voice betrayed him. Doctors were supposed to exude a sense of calm, but he just couldn't keep it in this time. "You're laying here in a pool of your own blood and you're worried about me?!"
"Has anyone ever told you that you have incredible bedside manner?" you winced and tried to sit up, but he pushed you back down.
"Don't. You. Even. Dare," he narrowed his eyes at you, pulled out his tri-corder, and snatched one of the rogue flashlights from the floor. The scan results made him want to rip his hair out. Your whole body was basically covered in one big bruise. Five broken ribs, a broken nose, several major lacerations, laser wounds, and a massive concussion. That wasn't even close to all of it, but one thing at a time.
He injected you with his last spare hypospray. Leonard really wished he had his goddamned kit right about now. The gashes in your side needed to be closed somehow. You were losing too much blood with the wound open like that. No auto-suture, no thread and needle, no bandages. There was only one option. Cauterization.
"Stay," Leonard ordered before grabbing a laser off of a fallen Kaviran and one of the metal sticks from the floor. The doctor blasted the end of the rod until it was red-hot and settled beside you again.
"That doesn't look fun," you pursed your lips.
"It won't be. It's going to hurt... a lot," Bones said.
"Great," you huffed and leaned back into the dirt.
"Lucky for you, Spock gave me some good practice with this method a few years ago. It'll be quick, I promise," he tried to reassure you.
"Yeah, yeah. Just get it over with, please."
"Deep breath in," Leonard whispered soothingly. You squeezed your eyes shut and did as he asked. He peeled back your red shirt and pressed the scorching metal to your skin before he could second guess himself. The sounds of agony you made were torture to his ears. The seconds felt like hours, but eventually the screams fell away to quiet shivers and pants.
McCoy used his sleeve to wipe away some of the blood on your abdomen. No new blood replaced it, meaning he successfully closed it! "All done, sweetheart. No more..." He tossed the rod away and held your face in his soft hands again.
"Well..." you caught your breath. "That wasn't so bad... I don't suppose you have any water in those magical pockets of yours?" you asked hopefully.
"I'm afraid not," McCoy's eyes softened when they fell on you.
"It's fine, maybe I can ring out my pants and drink the water from our little swim earlier..." you joked.
Leonard sighed and shook his head, "Darlin', you are a force to be reckoned with..." He brought the cuff of his uniform to your cheek and tenderly wiped away whatever blood he could. Your face was swelling around the Orbital and Zygomatic regions. He could see it in your eyes... you were in a lot of pain and there wasn't a damned thing he could do about it. His med-kit was miles away, somewhere under several feet of debris.
"Where's my phaser?" you lifted your head, but he gently urged you back down.
"Easy there tiger, take a breather. I'll find it," McCoy groaned as he stood up. The hypo he used earlier for his back was starting to wear off. He must have been down here a lot longer than he realized.
The doctor scoured the floor for your phaser, but everything was so dark and his flashlight was getting low on power. After close to five minutes of searching, he swiped one of the enemy's lasers from the floor and brought it back to you. "Sorry, I know you aren't a fan of deadly weapons, but this is all we got."
You took a deep, shaky breath and forced yourself into a sitting position. "Let's hope I don't have to use it then..." you winced and placed the weapon in your holster. "We should get moving. These guys aren't gonna stay down for long."
Leonard nodded and brought your left arm around his shoulder, bracing your waist with his gentle hands. "Alright, up we go... Easy, easy. That was only a temporary fix back there..." he whispered. Slowly, Dr. McCoy eased you into a standing position. Almost immediately, your vision swam and your body sank against his.
"Oh..." you muttered, closing your eyes against the spinning room.
"Y/N? Talk to me. What are you feeling?"
"This is a bad concussion... the worst I've had. I feel like I'm sideways, standing on the wall instead of the floor."
"Okay, try taking a step for me."
You opened your eyes and took a step forward, but your upper body swayed to the side, attempting to account for the imaginary tilt. You probably would've fallen on your face if McCoy weren't there to catch you.
"Well, darlin' I gotta hand it to you. If you were any more off-center, you'd be the damned tower of Pisa"
"Leave me here... you need to go and find the others. I'll just slow you down."
"Out of the question. If the roles were switched, would you leave me behind?" McCoy raised his eyebrow disapprovingly.
"That's differen-"
"You and I both know that's a load of hooey. I'm not leaving you. End of story. Now sit here for a minute, while I figure something out."
You begrudgingly sat down on a rock, with Leonard's help of course, and watched as he paced for a few moments. You supposed he must have come up with something, because he stole a scarf from one of the aliens and started tying it around himself in various ways. You eventually decided to close your eyes. While you always enjoyed looking at the handsome doctor, your sense of vertigo was making it rather unbearable.
"Alright, I've got a plan, but it won't feel too good on your ribs."
"Great..." you mumbled, keeping your eyes shut.
"I'll try to be gentle-"
"I know Len... We're short on options and you're doing your best. It'll be okay... I trust you, " you offered him a smile. His heart did back-flips in his chest and it took everything in him not to tell you he loved you right then and there! Instead, he wrapped the scarf around you, hoping the extra support would make it easier to carry you long distance.
"Okay darlin', I'm gonna pick you up now... Is that okay?"
"I'm ready, go ahead," you said.
The moment your chest made contact with his back, you felt a wave of nausea-inducing pain all through your body. You pressed your face into his shoulder and tried not to make any noise. Leonard hoisted you up, hands clutching your thighs.
"How're you doing back there?" Leonard turned his head so you could hear him.
"Been better..." you managed. "Let's get moving doc, before I throw up on you or something."
"Wouldn't want that, would we?" he started walking away from the carnage at a brisk pace. His back was screaming at him, but he had no intention of putting you down. You winced at every sharp movement, so he tried to keep all shaking or bouncing to a minimum.
The path was tortuously uphill, with a few straightaways between that gave him some reprieve. Eventually, the cave walls gave way to carved buildings. The flashlight he had attached to his shirt was growing dimmer, so he was thankful for the more predictable pattern of the ancient roadways. All was quiet except for the shuffling of feet and running water. That was, until you spoke up.
"Hey Leonard?" you whispered. Your hot breath caused Bones to shiver.
"Yeah? What is it, do you need a break?" he asked
He felt you nod against his shoulder. You must be exhausted. Fatigue was common with concussions. He just needed to make sure you stayed awake until he could get you into a bio-bed.
"Just hold on a little bit longer, I think I hear a stream up ahead. Maybe we can get you that water you were asking for, huh?" he suggested.
You nodded again.
McCoy picked up the pace a little and started following the sound of the water. As luck would have it, they found what must have once been a beautiful fountain. Over the years, the water pouring from the ceiling ate away at whatever carving had been there. The fountain was now nothing more than a circular pool being fed by a small waterfall, but presentation matters not when you're as thirsty as a riverbed in a drought.
Leonard eased you onto the lip of the pool and leaned you back against a stone structure that probably used to be a retaining wall. He sat the scarf to the side and pulled out his tri-corder again. A quick scan informed him that the water was safe to drink. McCoy washed his mitts in the basin before cupping them under the waterfall. Once full, he brought them to your lips and urged you to drink.
He did this a few times until you seemed satisfied, only then did he allow himself a few sips. Bones stretched out his legs and cursed under his breath. His whole body felt like lead. He was sure you were enjoying the break too. That pressure on your chest must have been terrible, even with the medicine dulling the pain. Yet, you never complained. Not even once. He wished you would lean on him, let him give you some comfort. Instead, you were probably bracing for him to make some unsolicited comments about you and your work.
Leonard was pulled from his reverie when you tilted toward the water with the intent to cleanse yourself of the caked on blood. Your face contorted in discomfort and you pressed back against the wall. You took a moment to collect yourself and tried again, but McCoy stopped you with a soothing squeeze of the shoulder. "Let me do it..."
"Leonard, you don't-"
"You took down the quad-armed madmen, now it's my turn. You did your part... Let me do mine." He peered at you with those gorgeous hazel eyes and you were powerless to refuse. You nodded and leaned your head back against the rock.
He knelt in front of you and took your hands into his. Leonard's palms were soft and tender... the hands of a healer. Yours were bloody and busted and callused. You weren't sure it should be legal for you to touch someone like him. He didn't bend you toward the water. Instead, he got his hands wet and wiped away the stains using slow, circular motions. The cold water felt nice against the scrapes on your knuckles.
Bones was always gentle with you, even if he wasn't pleased with you. To be honest, it was one of the things you most looked forward to when you got back from a long mission. Amidst all the uncertainties in the universe, the one thing you could always count on was Leonard. You could count on a southern metaphor and a few well-placed medical jokes to keep you from falling apart at the seams. His smile, his voice, his touch... they were your anchor.
He should have left you behind. He probably would have made it to safety by now, but he was stubborn as a mule. No amount of arguing would shake him when his mind was made up. You couldn't decide whether you loved that about him or hated it.
You loved it, of course you did... You loved everything about him. No point in denying it now. You needed him safe, not here taking care of you.
"Leonard, I need you to do something for me..." you said.
"What is it, sweetheart?" he whispered in that drawl you loved so much.
"I need you to go and find the others," you murmured, peering at him through half-lidded eyes.
His hands ceased all movement and he looked at you with an ambivalent expression... the one he always wore when he was about to scold you. You sighed and braced for the impact.
"Are you out of your mind? I can't leave you here! It's not safe!" he furrowed his brows at you.
"That's exactly why I need you to go. I've put you in danger long enough. I'm not getting any better Leonard, I'm slowing you down."
"I'm not leaving," he glared at your hands as he washed them.
"Why do you always have to do this?" your voice shook.
Leonard froze.
"Why can't you just trust me? I'm trying to keep you safe! I've become a detriment to your survival. You have to leave me. Please. Just one time... I don't want to argue anymore... I just want you to live... I love you, dammit!" Tears carved a path through your bloodstained face.
Leonard's throat burned as he struggled not to cry. You meant it... He could see it in your eyes, hear it in the desperation in your voice. You were at your breaking point. The cool and confident Y/N was gone. He couldn't be a coward anymore. It was time to just come out and say it. But when he tried, all that came out was a remorseful croak. No. He had to show you.
Bones cradled the sides of your face in his hands and pressed his lips against yours. His body moved of its own accord, desperate to get closer. His breath hitched when your fingers snaked into his hair, your touch sent a wave of goosebumps down his arms. The kiss was clumsy, full of bumping foreheads and clashing noses in the dark. But despite the messiness of it all, he wanted nothing more than this moment to last forever.
The eagerness slowly melted into soft, slow kisses. Finally, Leonard pulled away, eyes swimming with regret. His thumbs brushed over your cheeks. His lips quivered on the edge of speaking.
"I can't leave you... I can't do it... I trust you... I don't think you're reckless, or foolhardy, or whatever else I've said through the years. You're a hero! My hero, and I think you're incredible at everything you do. You're the best damned CSO we've ever had on the Enterprise and I should have been tellin' you that all along," McCoy shook his head. "I'm sorry I led you to believe I thought you were anything less than perfect... I love you, Y/N... Don't ask me to leave you behind..." he pleaded.
McCoy's breath caught in his throat when you lightly grabbed his wrist. His eyes glinted off the ever-dimming flashlight, giving the illusion that stars were suspended within.
Your attention darted over to his hands... his impossibly soft hands. You allowed yourself the privilege of intertwining your fingers with his.
"Y/N?"
"Have I ever told you that you have beautiful hands?" You murmured tiredly.
"Can't say you have..." he whispered breathlessly.
"Well, you do... You've held my life in them so many times... You're my hero too..." you hummed and closed your eyes. You brushed your slightly-chapped lips over his knuckles, making Leonard melt to the core.
"Y/N..."
"It looks like we've reached an impasse... I love you too much to let you stay... You love me too much to leave..." You murmured against his fingers.
"Then I guess it's time we came up with a compromise..." Leonard whispered. You opened your mouth to respond, but an unexpected voice took you both by surprise.
"That is incorrect doctor, no compromise will be needed."
You had your laser out in a matter of seconds and Leonard had his flashlight aimed at the stranger. In the dim lighting, you could see that the person wasn't actually a stranger. It was Spock!
"What the- What- Spock?! How long have you been standing there?!" McCoy bellowed.
"Since you informed Commander Y/L/N that you love them," Spock raised an eyebrow and stepped closer.
"Dammit, Spock! Why didn't you say something?!"
"I felt it would be rude to interrupt-"
"Nevermind that. I need you to go get a stretcher and bring it here! Y/N is badly injured!" Instead of leaving like Bones expected, Spock pulled out his communicator. "Spock, that thing doesn't work down he-"
"Spock to field team. I need a stretcher at my location. I have left a trail for you to follow. Yes. Yes, I will inform them," the Vulcan closed his communicator and resumed his signature resting pose with his hands behind his back, "The medical team is on their way here with a stretcher and supplies."
"Now the communicator works!" Leonard threw his hands up in exasperation.
"Have you found the rest of the crew?" You asked, hope evident in your tired voice.
"Your team all made it out alive, Commander. Minimal injuries. They were placed under heavy surveillance, likely with the intention to sell our officers in an underground market. They managed to escape when a horn sounded. Several Kavirans left to investigate, leaving only two guards. Security officers Lewis and Elfan dispatched them quickly and led the others to safety. By the time they made it back to the entrance, rescue personnel had blasted their way in. They are resting in the medbay as we speak."
You released a sigh of relief and sagged against the stone. You could finally breathe easy knowing your team was alright. "Thank you, Spock."
"How far are we from the surface?" McCoy asked.
"2.414 kilometers," Spock replied.
"A mile and a half?! We were almost there?!"
"No doctor, you were going in the wrong direction. It is fortunate I found you when I did."
McCoy shot him a glare and returned his attention to you. "How are you feeling sweetheart? Do you need anything?"
"I need a nap..." you tried to smile.
"You can have one when we get back to the Enterprise. Think you can hold on a bit longer for me?"
"For you doc, I'd do anything," you winked.
Leonard blushed and smiled. "You're damn near ready to pass out and you're trying to make me weak in the knees~"
"You say that like it's a difficult thing to accomplish, doctor..." you whispered and shivered. The loss of blood had taken down your body temperature by a significant amount.
McCoy settled beside you on the floor, hissing as his scraped back made contact with the cool stone. You tucked yourself into his side and snickered.
"What?" he frowned.
"You smell terrible," you smirked back.
"Then why are you moving closer to me?"
"I'm hoping if I sit close to you, you'll kiss me again~" you joked.
Leonard didn't dare look at the Vulcan standing a few feet away. He didn't look at you either. He just sat there, practically steaming from the embarrassment.
"It was a joke, doctor," you teased.
Bones let out a sigh of relief.
"Jeez, don't sound too disappointed," You laughed and winced as a jolt ran through your ribs.
"you wanna kiss me that bad?" he asked.
"I've only been wanting to for like... a year," you shrugged.
He leaned close, his lips ghosted over your ear. "Don't worry darlin'. Once you're all healed up, you can have me all to yourself..." he drawled in a whisper.
Your face lit up like a wildfire. You were amazed at how quickly he had turned the tables on you...
At least you weren't cold anymore.
~~~
It took thirty minutes for the medical team to arrive with a stretcher and thirty more minutes to exit the cave. Almost as soon as the moonlight hit your face, you were beamed up onto the ship. You barely had a second to greet the Captain before you and Leonard were whisked away to the medbay. Due to the injuries McCoy sustained during his time underground, he was not permitted to operate on you. Dr. M'Benga took wonderful care of you and within the week, they allowed you to rest in your own room.
Leonard made regular house calls and sat by your side most nights after his shift. He was determined to help you make a swift recovery.
You watched him out of the corner of your eye, admiring the shadows his tousled brown hair was casting on his face. The doctor was trying not to doze off and failing miserably. It was a mesmerizing sight.
"You're staring, Darlin'," he murmured and peeked an eye open at you.
"Stop being so pretty and I'll stop staring," you shrugged. He rolled his eyes, but the blush gave him away. For his sake, you decided to change the subject. "You know, doctor... I never said thank you."
"Thank me? for what?" he asked.
"For saving my life..."
"You don't need to-"
"I do. It's not easy... your job, I mean. People like me, the fighters, get all the spotlight, but you put yourself on the line... carried me to safety. I saved your life once... You've saved mine... I don't even know how many times," your eyes softened. "Thank you for everything... "
Leonard stared at you for a moment before leaning in and kissing you softly. A sentry and a surgeon. The ultimate pair. After years of dancing around each other, you finally gave in.
Your doctor pulled away with a lazy grin and tucked your head under his chin. "There you go again, wooing me with your endless charisma."
"Says the man who's filled to the brim with southern charm."
"At least I don't use my charm as a means to get what I want."
"How else was I supposed to get your attention with you falling asleep over there?~"
"You could have asked nicely. Haven't you ever heard of the word, please?"
"Can't say that I have."
"Don't you worry darlin', you'll learn soon enough," he smirked against your temple.
You halfheartedly smacked McCoy's chest. "Slow down there, cowboy. My ribs are still broken," you sassed.
"Just giving you an incentive to heal quicker," he kissed your head and pulled you closer.
"Mhm..." you closed your eyes and listened to his steady heartbeat. A month ago, you could have only dreamed of holding him like this... of being held. Now he was here, tracing shapes on your shoulder with his delicate fingertips.
"Y/N?"
"Len?" you smiled, eyes still closed.
"I hope you know that I'd do it again... a billion times over," he said. You knew what he meant.
"Me too..." you hummed in agreement.
You'd take the beating again and again for him... and no matter how many beatings you took... you knew he'd be there waiting to make it better again. A vicious cycle.
"I love you," he whispered.
You wouldn't change it for the world.
"I love you too."
You had a lot of healing to do before you could fully embrace this exciting new development in your life, but for now, you were content.
Content, huh? Now that's the understatement of the century.
every time the women in star trek treat the trio like baby girls i tremble. when they grab them and kiss them? when they grab their hands and kiss them??? i shake. i foam from the mouth!
bones loooves a sweet southern peach, if you catch my drift. dude is an ass man and i wonât take no for an answer. heâs all up on it every chance he gets đ
also, i love you. thank you for being a bones baddie.
You didnât think that this was what bio beds were supposed to be used for, but you didnât really mind.
You had gone up to the med-bay for some asinine reason; an accident that happened because you werenât paying close enough attention to what you were doing. It wasnât crowded, just a couple nurses milling about as you got settled. You had expected MâBenga to wander over and ask about your symptoms but instead you were greeted with Jim Kirkâs conspiring grin.
He looked you over as you held your arm close to you, and you cocked your head to one side. âCan I help you, Captain?â
Kirk flashed a grin at you and shook his head. âNo, Iâm all set. Just stopping in, doing roundsâŠâ He paused and looked over his shoulder in the direction of McCoyâs office. âWonât keep you waiting, Bones should be out soon.â
You nodded slowly. âThatâs alright, itâs just a scrape and a bruise, Dr. McCoy doesnât need to be bothered, Iâll just wait until Chapel or-â
Kirk held up a hand and clicked his tongue. âNo trouble, itâs slow, and he needs to be kept busy. Iâll go and grab him.â
âCaptain, really-â You started, but Kirk was already gone, and you could swear you heard him laughing as he walked down to Leonardâs office.
You watched his back retreat into the other room as you leaned back into your chair. Your arm was starting to throb, adrenaline from the earlier incident starting to leave. It wasnât too long before you heard a slight scuffle coming from the direction of the CMOâs office.
âCâmon Bones, sheâs literally being served up to you on a platter!â
âSheâs not food, Jim!â
âYou know what I mean! Look, sheâs attractive, doesnât find you completely reprehensible, and smart enough to have a post on this ship⊠I donât see why you donât just talk to her. And now, you can! Sheâs here out of necessity!â
âI wonât even begin to tell you how wrong that is ethically.â
âEthics aside, sheâs pretty and you like her and now you have to speak with her.â
âProfessionallyâŠ.. donât roll your eyes at me!â
âIâll physically push you out of this office.â
âOh fuckinâ fine!â
You turned your head away when you head footsteps. When you turned back to watch the doorway, pretending you werenât just eavesdropping, Leonard had stepped out, with Kirk peaking his head around to watch.
When Leonard stayed in one place, eyes fixed somewhere behind you, Kirk placed a firm hand on his back and shoved. There was a hiss and the door behind Leonard closed, with a beep noting a lock override had been activated. You watched as the doctor let out a hiss of breath before making his way over to where you sat.
âFollow me.â
You nodded and made your way into the smaller exam room after him. The room was tiny, so you squeezed by him as you hopped up to sit on the bio bed, legs dangling. You rattled off what had happened, pain levels, etc, all while he kept his back turned to you, documenting everything on the PADD left on the desk in the room.
When there had been a lapse in the conversation, if you could call it that, you jumped on your chance.
âSo, you think Iâm pretty, huh?â
You watched with some amusement as Leonard nearly dropped the tricorder he was holding. âExcuse me?â
You held out your injured arm for him to scan. âI heard the Captain say you thought I was pretty.â
âWell, the Captain says a lotta things.â Leonard responded, gingerly moving your arm this way and that after the scan.
âI think youâre pretty.â
Leonard huffed a laugh. âMighty kind of you to say.â
There was a companionable silence as he finished looking at your arm and patching up the small cuts.
âShould be fine; no long lasting damage. Just pay attention to what youâre doing.â
ââKay.â You noted, kicking your feet a bit while they dangled off the side of the bed. You watched Leonardâs eyes as they took in your legs, exposed as they were with the dress uniform Starfleet had provided.
âIs it true then?â
âWhat?â He asked, eyes snapping up to meet yours.
âThat you think Iâm pretty?â
âWell, objectively, yes but-â
You didnât let him finish, reaching out with your non injured arm to grab a handful of his shirt and haul him towards you. You kissed him, and he was unresponsive at first. You started to lean back, embarrassment rather than arousal causing a flush to creep up your neck. You were starting to loosen your grip on his shirt when he took a large hand and cupped the back of your head to bring your lips back to his.
The kiss was sloppy, teeth catching on lips, and you couldnât help the small noises he was wrenching out of you. You tugged him closer, scooting forward on the bed and allowing your skirt to rise as you caged his hips with your thighs.
Leonard broke the kiss to mouth at your neck. âDarlinâ I think youâre fuckinâ beautiful, let alone prettyâŠâ He murmured, moving his other hand to grab a large handful of your ass. âFuckinâ smart too⊠with an ass that wonât quit? Been my own brand of poison the last couple of months.â
You brought both hands up to grip at his shoulders, whining under the attention. âCoulda just asked me to get coffee sometimeâŠâ You panted.
Leonard huffed a breath of a laugh onto your neck, sending a shiver through you. âCoulda, shoulda, woulda.â
You smiled wide and moved your hands to bring his head back to you. You caught his grin before he moved back to kiss you.
âWant you to fuck meâŠ.â You whined.
Leonard stepped back then, and you wrapped your legs securely around him so he couldnât get very far. His grim expression dampened by his wild hair and kiss bitten lips.
âCanât, darlinâ. Donât have any condoms.â
You scoffed. âThis is the medbay, they must have some!â
âWell, we need to restock the next time weâre docked because the Captain-â
You barked a laugh. âI donât need to hear anymore than that.â
Leonard smiled slightly, tapping his fingers where they rested against your thighs. His expression became pensive. âOther things I can do thoughâŠâ
You raised an eyebrow in a poor mimic of his expression. âOh yeah?â
And thatâs how you ended up with your face smashed into a pillow, with your ass in the air and one CMO with his face surrounded by your pussy.
He ate it like a man starved, thick fingers pumping in and out of you as you whined, trying to keep the volume low but it was nearly an impossible task.
He alternated tonguing your pussy and damn near kissing your puckered hole, his tongue opening you up as his fingers continued their brutal pace. You tried to stay still, but your hips continued their little aborted thrusts back into his face as you tried to get him deeper.
Leonard noticed this and popped his head up. âGo on, sugar. Get that ass back in my face. Donât hold back on my account. Harder than a damn hammer back here.â
You let out a startled laugh that quickly turned into a keen as he moved back to tonguing you at a pace that bordered on manic. When you came, you heard Leonard groan your name as he felt your walls flutter around his fingers and tongue.
âCome on my ass, cmon Leo, do it.â You urged, lifting your head to watch him frantically get his cock out. You locked eyes as he kept fingers inside of you as he stripped his cock with his other hand. It didnât take long, and you felt hit streaks land on your cheeks.
You stayed like that for a moment as you both came down. Leonard moved his fingers out of you and brought them to his mouth. You let out a moan as you watched him clean them with his tongue.
âTastes like peaches.â
You giggled and pushed your head back into the pillow.
âââ-
You both cleaned yourself up as best you could, before moving to exit the small exam room. You thought you had made it without anyone noticing as the medbay was nearly abandoned when you left.
You had just accepted his offer to spend the evening in his quarters when you were walking by his office and the only other occupant had opened the door to catch you both as your were leaving.
âExam went well?â Kirk asked, sticking his head out the door.
Leonard let out a curse and leaned to whisper into your ear with a hand resting on the curve of your ass. âGo to my quarters, Iâm going to kill him quickly first and Iâll meet you there.â
âAnd I didnât see anything.â You winked, moving to leave the medbay with an extra skip in your step.
You heard Leonardâs scolding and Kirkâs laughs nearly the entire way to the turbo lift.
Heard It Through The Grapevine- Leonard âBonesâ McCoy x Reader
Summary: Seems a pregnancy canât be kept secret for long on a star ship
(I know the song is not about this but with some of these requests Iâm taking some liberties)
While there are many aspects of being apart of the star ship crew that you appreciate, there were also many you could do without. Lack of privacy was one of the things that you could definitely do without.
Christine had been the one to do the pregnancy testing for you and you had thought it would stay between the two of you. Unfortunately however by the time you stopped for lunch, it seemed the message had made it all over the ship and back to your husband Leonard.
Walking into the lunch room, he wasted no time rushing up to you with excited eyes.
âIs it true?!â He asked excitedly, like a kid at Christmas.
âIs what true?â You asked confused, as you notice everyone in the room whispering and avoiding eye contact.
âThat youâre pregnant?â He asked still excited, but now a little concerned.
âIâm gonna kill Christine,â you mutter to yourself, making Leonard pull a confused frown.
Looking around the room you see there is a lot of attention now on the both of you. Taking Leonard by the hand, you drag him out into the hall to have some privacy.
âI went to Christine for a pregnancy test this morning and hoped she wouldnât tell anyone, but it seems to have gotten around the whole ship. To answer your question, yes I am pregnant an-.â
Before you could finish your sentence, Leonard was lifting you in the air and twirling you around, filling you both with joy and laughter.
âIâm gonna be a father!â He excitedly exclaimed as he placed you on the ground, with a sweet and loving kiss.
âYes, my love, and Iâm sorry you didnât hear it from me.â
âItâs alright, darling, I love you so much.â
can somebody tell me why sometimes I can write a novel in one sitting and sometimes itâs like a damn drought and a go a year where if I look at blank paper itâs like having war flashbacks
Synopsis: Maybe this was what you needed. A change of scenery, hopefully a reassignment to some other foreign planet where you could collect more samples. You rubbed the inside of your wrist. Another heartbreak, so far, the worst one of your Starfleet days. Taking a peek just to reassure yourself the mark was still there, still not yet able to make out the half image fully, you dropped your head and sighed. Maybe you were late. You had been in Starfleet practically from birth. Your mom was one of the best captains in recent Starfleet history, or depending on who you asked, she had already found her place amongst the greats, and in some instances even giving Admiral Pike a run for his money. You only hoped you could live up to what she had always imagined for you. You quickly pulled down your sleeve and stood, soulmate be damned, the stars waited for no one.
You traveled through the ranks of Starfleet quickly, as to be expected, and currently stood in front of Admiral Pike's office. You had no idea what this meeting could be about. You were on shore leave from your current assignment and you were hoping to be able to sleep in sometime this next week. You quickly shook those thoughts from your head as you raised your hand to gingerly knock on the door. Stifling your nerves, still feeling like you had been sent to the principal's office.Â
âCome in,â called from the other side of the door and you took a breath to steady yourself. Entering the office you were taken aback to see a head of jet black hair already sitting in front of the Admiral. Waiting for his gesture before sitting, the two of you are too close for the formalities of Starfleet at this moment.
âI understand youâre on shore leave at the moment so weâll make this quick. The USS Enterprise is getting ready to leave on a 7 year voyage, and Commander Spock has apparently waited until this very moment to choose his right hand,â You must have looked extremely confused considering the subtle taken aback look on Spockâs face.Â
âIâve kept quite an eye on you since you joined the Academy.â Spock finally spoke, and you allowed yourself to turn and look at him. âYou hold a doctorate in botanical sciences and you wrote your dissertation on how we could take Hippomane mancinella and from removing one gene make a non-poisonous twin that could be used to restore coastal plains.â Spock paused for a second, glancing at Admiral Pike before continuing. âYou are also my best friend, and I care very deeply for you. I hope you know that I have chosen you because you are the most logical choice for the job.â
You could feel a flush of heat spread rapidly across your face, slightly bowing your head towards him, âThank you Commander Spock.â The slight twitch in the corner of his mouth was all you needed.Â
âYou also made Lt. Commander this year, youâre 24, certainly one of the youngest weâve had in the current history of Starfleet,â Admiral Pike spoke again.
You looked back at him and cleared your throat, sitting up straighter in your chain, âYoungest to make Lt. Commander in the last 25 years,â a weight sat heavy on your chest as the sentence left your mouth. The real reason for your hesitation.Â
â(Y/N) do you even realize how proud she would be of you even if you never joined Starfleet? You have her brains and her heart, and based on what Iâve heard from Spock here youâve gotten one over on him more than once during sparring exercises.âÂ
âHow long do I have to pack?âÂ
Three days later, you were before Spock once again. This time in an office of your own and quickly falling into a comfortable silence with the vulcan by your side. Both of your heads buried in your PADDS as you both had to finalize a few remaining documents and double check all incoming reports. You were tasked with helping Spock give out the assignments to everyone who stepped foot on the Enterprise. You painted a smile on your face and made sure everyone was where they were supposed to go. Noticing that your line was dwindling down you looked around for Spock, wanting to double check nothing else remained on your part before the USS Enterprise took off on her adventure.Â
â(Y/N)?â A voice behind you half screamed your name and as you spun around your sights quickly fell on Nyota Uhura. You double checked that no one needed your assistance before sprinting over to her and enveloping her in a hug. âI thought you were away!â
âAdmiral Pike called me back. Iâve been reassigned.âÂ
Her eyes widened as she stepped away from you in shock, âNo way!â You frantically nodded as she let out an overjoyed squeal while dancing in place, âThank god I'll at least have you for the next 7 years.â
After making a lap around the ship to make sure there were no stragglers you met Spock again, this time quickly falling in stride beside him and heading to the bridge. Quickly you were introduced to several faces you had never seen, before your eyes fell onto the man sitting in the Captainâs chair.Â
A soft smirk fell on his face as he stepped toward you and pulled you into a hug, âWelcome aboard (Y/N). Itâs good to have you home.âÂ
You pulled away from him, suddenly conscious of how many people were watching the interaction. âThank you Captain. Itâs good to be here.â Moving back to stand behind Spock you stifled the feeling of embarrassment that crept up within you. What would everyone think of you after that interaction? He was your boss.Â
Pulling out your PADD you read through a couple new reports that had started filing in while waiting for James to finish his speech and by the end of his rambling when Spock looked at his PADD all he needed to do was skim the documents and provide a signature. As he went to comment on the way you gave clear and concise instructions in response to any remaining questions in the correspondence he noticed you were already gone and there was no trace of you on the bridge.
Moments later Spock found you, already diving head deep into the research you couldnât wait to explore and prepping the built in greenhouse for any future plants that could cause significant problems.
âI see we are quick to begin our work,â Spock mused, hands behind his back as he stepped into what was now a barren tin can.Â
âYes!â You quickly stood from the container you were mixing starter soil in, âIf we get to our next destination alive I want to be prepared,â You took a small step closer to Spock, lowering your voice hoping that no one else would hear. âI apologize for leaving the bridge so abruptly earlier. When Captain Kirk hugged me it made me extremely uncomfortable.â
âI understand the sentiment as I also do not fare well to public displays of affection.â Spock gave you that vulcan half smile again before walking over to where you previously were and picking up a pair of gloves.
*******************************
6 months in and Leonard was pissed. You had been a thorn in his side for 34 days now. For the last month he had tried hunting you down, but he didnât even know where to start looking. Why did the enterprise even need a botanist? It was just one more patient that tested the remaining patience he had left. âDammit Jim you promised me I would have (Y/N)âs physical exam done by the end of the week!âÂ
âI was just calling about that, if you want that done youâre going to have to make a house call.â
âNow why would I do that?â
âBecause I might have not told them anything about being late for any sort of physical just to mess with you.â
Leonard sighed before bringing both hands up to his temples. 6 months in and he could already confirm he was going to die of a stroke. Jim was going to speed up that process tenfold if he continued with antics like this. There was some sort of virus going around the ship right now, he didnât need to be making calls to random personal quarters.Â
âWhen I get my hands on you.â
âThank me later , Bones.â Leonard could hear the devious smile Jim held on his face through the comm and couldnât help but instinctually roll his eyes as he was then told the two locations he could find you. Checking the time he was certain he would be able to find you at your quarters. He entered the turbolift and in his anger almost ran into Spock.
âDoctor.â Spock gave a subtle nod of acknowledgement.
âCommander.â The air was stiff around them. McCoy, not too sure why he didnât like the Vulcan, maybe it was the coldness. He was so still in everything down to his breathing. Almost the complete opposite of the way a human reacts.
A lightbulb went off when he suddenly remembered that Spock was a science officer, the blue shirt had been in front of him multiple times this week and Leonard hadnât made the connection until this very awkward moment.
âCommander Spock, one of the science officers, is late for their physical exam. I tried recruiting the Captain for his help in informing them, but apparently heâs just been playing games with me the entire time. Would you happen to know where I could find Lt. Commander (Y/L/N)?â
He didnât miss the way the Vulcanâs eyebrows raised as he lifted his head from whatever he was reading on his PADD. Looking maybe a little too close, Leonard could see an almost quizzical look appear on Spock's face. âThat is very unlike (Y/N). Some days I fear they may run a tighter schedule than me.â Spock only half spoke the latter sentence aloud, mostly musing to himself. Spock looked at the floor level the confused doctor chose and almost felt pity. Has Leonard McCoy really not met you yet? The thought was somewhat incredulous to Spock. You had to be the clumsiest human he had ever met. Sober you was almost as bad as an inebriated Jim.Â
âYouâre not going to find them in their personal quarters. I would start at the research library, if you donât find (Y/N) there, go to the greenhouse.â The turbolift opened and Spock gracefully stepped out, âI wish you the best of luck Dr. McCoy.â
After getting somewhat lost from the library, Leonard finally found the greenhouse. He stopped at the door, not knowing what sort of protocol to follow, so he rapped on the door with the back of his knuckles. There was a moment of silence before he heard you call out.
âCome in,â The first thing Leonard saw when he stepped in was a giant computer system running a constant stream of intel from the plants you had collected on surface missions already. From soil hydrations, pH of the soil, humidity in different areas of the greenhouse. He looked around before seeing a pair of blue pants to his left and there you were, almost completely bent over. He didnât even notice the trough like planter you were currently digging to the bottom of, all he could focus on was the way those blue pants clung to your body. From the roundness of your ass, his eyes trailed down to your thighs, further down to where your pants just ever so slightly flared at your calves.
âNeed some help there Darlinâ?
Your head quickly popped out of the planter, the blush you were currently experiencing, exacerbated the redness of regaining blood flow to your head again. Leonard felt his heart skip, his eyes grazed over you before he cleared his throat, âAre you Lt. Commander (Y/L/N)?â
âYes I am, may I ask-â
âLeonard McCoy, CMO.â he stated gruffly before you could even finish your question, trying to push down the reaction he felt when he made eye contact with you. He didnât need to feel anything for anyone right now. He had a job to do dammit and that job didnât involve any sort of personal relationships.
âOh.â You briefly looked down at your feet, the solid exterior slightly putting you off after the semi-sweet first impression he had going for him. âWell, if the CMO had to come all the way down to the greenhouse for me then it must be important. How can I be of service?â You moved closer to him, away from all the plants, and suddenly he could smell the florals on you.Â
Oh god. Leonard definitely didnât want to answer that last question. The imagine of you bent over that ungodly sized planter was almost enough to do him in. He didnât know what was going on with him. âYouâre late for your 6 month physical, and typically I wouldnât hunt down a patient over something like this but youâre over a month late and youâre the last one.â
âA month?â You had to keep yourself from screeching, âI am so sorry. I can be up there first thing tomorrow morning? What time would you like me to be at med bay?â
Leonard scoffed, âAre you serious?â
âVery much so. Why would you think that I wasnât being serious?â You looked up at him, before sitting at your desk and pulling up your schedule. âIâm assuming that 0600 is probably too early,â and Leonard couldnât agree more, he would need to be wide awake when dealing with you. âIâll be having my lunch around 1300 tomorrow, does that time work with you Doctor?â
Leonard felt a hitch in his breathing at the use of his title. Breathing has never been this hard for him, even when he thought he was head over heels for Jocelyn, âT-that works just fine with me, and I promise not to take up your entire lunch.â
âIâll hold you to that Doc.â you winked at him and he watched as you added the appointment into your daily schedule. Leonard cleared his throat once again and quickly turned, leaving you back in the serene peace of the greenhouse. Realizing the time you started packing up your things, making your rounds through the nursery and checking all the levels one more time just to be safe.
***********************
Leonard had a hard time sleeping. You had a 3 minute conversation and yet you were now consuming his dreams. He kept getting pieces of what he saw last night flooding his mind as he had down time in med bay.
Checking your pulse he couldnât ignore the feeling of your heartbeat increasing ever so slightly. âYou sure youâre feeling okay Darlin.?â He couldnât help but notice the blush that spread across your skin, covering your cheeks and nose.Â
His fingers still resting on your carotid, you looked up at him from the examination bed you were currently sitting on, your eyes wide and playful, âIâm not too sure Dr. McCoy, thatâs why I came to see you.â
âIs that right?â Leonard mused as he held eye contact with you, his hand slowly moving to grasp your neck, his thumb gently brushing against your lower lip-
âBones!â Leonard was snapped out of relishing his dreams by Jim, yelling his name and flapping around his arms like he was on fire. Truth be told he didnât even see his best friend walk in.
âJim, what is so important that you had to come and bother me during the middle of the day?â
Jim softly slumped in the chair in front of his friend, feigning hurt at the abrupt shutdown of his antics. âSo, did you make that house call?â Jim couldnât help the smile that crept on his face. Being close to the both of you only made it easier for Jim to plan the beginning of his plan.Â
Leonard hummed to himself, mulling over the question his friend had asked, âI did, in fact the Lt. Commander agreed to come in for their physical exam later today.â Leonard released almost a half smile as he thought of seeing you again.
âThat's all?â Jim had stared at the man before him bewildered. âBones! I was trying to set you up together! Youâd be perfect for each other, and you never know, (Y/N) could be your-â
Leonard could already see where Jim was going with this and he didnât need another lecture on his love life from Jim, âYou know Iâve given up on that, besidesâŠâ
âBesides?â Jim waved his hand in the air, trying to coax the last of the sentence out of him.
âSheâs only 24, Jim,â he lowered his voice, âWhat would everyone think of me? Theyâd never let me speak at the Academy again!â
âBones, sheâs a grown woman who can make her own decisions. Even if nothing happens between the two of you, you could still use another friend. I mean when Iâm all you got,â Jim grimaced and shook his head. âIt must be rough for you.â
âThank you for that Jim. Now please, leave my office.â Leonard started on the paperwork he had waiting for him, not even really minding if Jim stayed, as long as he dropped the subject of you.
âYeah, it probably is time for me to be somewhere else. Iâm serious Bones, Maybe just try and get to know (Y/N) outside of the med bay. I think youâd be in for a pleasant surprise.â
Leonard couldnât help but roll his eyes, ignoring the pit in his stomach as the scenes of you unburied themselves in his mind.
*******************
As much as you tried to focus on the report in front of you, you couldnât help but think of the gruff doctor who visited you last night. The goosebumps that covered your body whenever he maintained eye contact with you made you want to jump him. A shiver rolled down your back as you were reminded of the southern drawl that hung in the air after he called you that damned nickname. Darlinâ. Sighing you ran a hand down your face, trying anything to pull your thoughts away from the doctor who made a special late night trip just for you.Â
â(Y/N) is everything okay?â Spock was now in front of your desk.
You let a tired smile hang on your lips and you rolled your eyes as the vulcan was still trying to decipher what human emotion you were feeling, âJust feeling a little worn down with the pace Iâve been holding the past couple months. I should probably try to slow down sooner than later.â
âDid Dr. McCoy find you last night?â Spock was now staring intently as you almost choked on the sip of coffee you were trying to enjoy.Â
âI didnât even know I missed the physical exam, how did you?â You stared back with the same intensity as your vulcan friend, before he finally caved.
âHe almost ran over me getting on the turbolift looking for you. Apparently Captain Kirk was supposed to inform you it was due and Dr. McCoy suggested the captain had been avoiding telling you just get one over on our Chief Medical Officer.â
âSounds like something James would do,â you ended the conversation and Spock was almost at the door before you spoke up again, âCommander Spock, I was hoping to take a few personal days at the end of this week. I can make sure everything is set and running on its own, but itâsâŠâ you hesitated, not wanting to say the words out loud. It was crazy to you, still being affected by a day like this. To everyone else but you, two days from now would just be a regular work day. You cleared your throat, wanting to try to make it through the sentence without unleashing too many human emotions on the vulcan you held near and dear. Forgetting that if anyone understood what you were feeling, it would be Spock. âItâs her birthday.â
âI understand Lt. Commander. I also have times where the pain seems all too fresh. Your personal days are granted, just send them to me in a formal request so we have the documentation.â You nodded your head in agreement, double checking the time, you were surprised just how fast it passed, and if you hurried, you could bring a coffee for the doctor.
Walking into med bay you held the hot coffee in your hand and smiled at the nurse who greeted you, you recognized her as Nurse Chapel, she did the exams for your transfer to the USS Enterprise. âI have an appointment with Dr. McCoy.âÂ
She smiled at you from the sign in desk and handed you a PADD to start filling out some general information on. âI am sure glad to see you Lt. Commander, Dr. McCoy has been going a little bit overboard trying to make sure everyoneâs physicals are up to date. Youâre the last one left.â
âWell hopefully once this is over Dr. McCoy can finally find something to help him relax.â You smiled at her as you handed the PADD back, she led you to a quiet exam room and assured you that the doctor would be in to see you in just a few minutes. You could feel the slight downward pull at the corners of your mouth as you glanced at the cup in your hand. âPlease let Dr. McCoy know not to keep me waiting too long, unless he enjoys cold coffee.â Nurse Chapel laughed before patting your hand and walking out of the room.
You didnât like med bay, hospitals, or anything that had to do with patching people up and hoping youâre fixing them. The white sterile room bringing up feelings of uneasiness. You looked around, setting the coffee down next to the PADD that was already in the room and taking a seat on the exam room bed. Sitting on the edge with your legs dangling you watched the clock on the wall tick.Â
After two minutes of staring at the clock on the wall your comm went off. âLt. Commander (Y/L/N)?â
You knew what it was, you had been eating lunch with Spock every day for the last 6 months. âIâm still in med bay, my appointment was until 1300 so Iâm here just a little bit early. I promise as soon as iâm done here-â
Your voice faded out as Leonard walked into the room. âIâll let you know when I am done in med bay Commander Spock.â Your eyes locked with Leonard as he stood in the doorway to the exam room, politely waiting for you to finish your conversation. Once he had your full attention you looked back at him giving a sheepish smile as he walked into the room. âI made you a coffee. Itâs a flat white.â You gave a soft sigh as you revel in your thoughts for a moment.Â
Leonard took in a breath when he saw the perfect white dot sitting in the caramel colored foam. âFlat whites are my favorite,â he turned to you as he took the first sip of his coffee. You were sure you were still in a dream when you saw the corners of Leonard's eyes scrunch, followed by a deep hum in his chest. Your eyes flicked down to his torso, admiring how the blue shirt clung to his broad shoulders. Following the lines of his body down you watched how his chest flexed as he turned to reach for the PADD behind him.Â
âSo, it says here youâre a month due for a physical exam. Youâve been on several away missions in the last 6 months, if you keep going at this pace youâre probably going to have to get a physical every 3 months.â
You couldnât help but let out a small chuckle, quickly apologizing once you saw the frown reappear on his face, âMy apologies Doctor, it was just funny to me how I mentioned to Commander Spock that I needed to slow down. Iâm not as spry as I was in my academy days.âÂ
Leonard couldnât help but let out a deep laugh at your comment, â(Y/N) youâre 24, youâre still young and spry.â
âDr. McCoy I was officially accepted into Starfleet Academy at 12, I have a PhD in botanical sciences and Iâm the youngest person to achieve the rank of Lt. Commander in the last 25 years. I havenât slowed down. I cut my month long shore leave down to 3 days to be transferred from the USS Scovil to the Enterprise. How many away missions have I been on?â
â43,â
âThatâs 7 a month for the last 6 months. Honestly, Spock is surprised I didnât end up down here sooner.â
âSo am I, some of those away missions ended up hostile, how did you just dip under the radar?â Leonard was now taking the time to read through most of the reports on file for you. He didnât even realize you had been on any of these, without any checkups in between.
âMy mom was Captain (Y/M/N) (Y/L/N).â The prestige of her name floated through the room and you watched as Leonard took what brief information he had about you and put the pieces together, âIâve been training in hand to hand combat since I could walk. I am perfectly capable of defending myself with every weapon on this ship. Iâve taken on Spock and won.â
Leonard was now standing in front of you, gently pressing his fingers to your neck, staring at the watch he still wore on his wrist, âWhatâs the deal with you guys anyway? Ya know the people on this ship donât know how to keep anything to themselves, they like to whisper.â
âYou should have heard what they were saying about Jim and I after he hugged me on the bridge in front of everyone,â you wanted to sigh at the feeling of his skin on yours, a tingling sensation seemed to linger wherever he touched you, âWith Spock itâs different. We both have the same mark, like matching same sides, not opposite sides. One night I was studying for the Academy and prepping for my dissertation. I had a few and ended up laying on my balcony outside pondering the woes of life. It was the first time Spock told me I was his best friend, and I made a stupid joke about how we were halfmates. That was 5 years ago.â A fond giggle fell from your lips as Leonard removed his fingers.Â
He pulled out his tricorder and started scanning you, âI know itâs weird for people to see a vulcan and a human so close, but that night Spock explained to me that finding someone with the same mark as you was almost as rare as finding your soulmate.â
A scoff fell out of the doctorâs mouth as he motioned for you to lay back, pulling out a hologram screen to run a full body scan, âYou actually believe in all that bullshit?â
You could feel a blush creeping up your neck, you felt like you were on fire under his hazel gaze, âYeah. My parents were, and from what I remember they were always so happy, my dad never remarried. He was her #1. On and off the ship. I see the same thing in the way Spock and Uhura look at each other when the other isnât looking. I hear the way Sulu talks about his husband. Besides,â you waved your hand in the air, needed to catch your breath as the doctor held your gaze, âTheyâre a soulmate, if I donât find them in this lifetime, Iâll find them in the next.â
You wanted to disappear, watching the look on Leonardâs face morph ever so slightly into a different emotion as you explained yourself. You couldnât help yourself from flickering your eyes down to his slightly parted lips. Never have you ever wanted to kiss someone as badly as you wanted to reach up and kiss Dr. McCoy right now.
âI guess Iâve never thought of it like that,â Leonard spoke his thoughts out loud while he looked at the reports that had generated in front of him. âI was married, she wasnât my soulmate, but I loved her. Thought she loved me too. I think she did at one point, but from what Iâve heard, nothingâs the same after you meet âthe one.ââ Leonard placed air quotes and he turned to look at you, âYouâre clear to go. Everything looks great.â
You sat up and Leonard offered a hand to help you down, âThank you for the coffee, Iâve dreamt of having a coffee that good since weâve been on this floating tin can.â
You couldnât help but let a smile grace your features, âThank you, it feels really great to be complimented on something that doesnât revolve around my work for the Federation.â
âAnytime Darlinââ Leonard let go of your hand to open the door, leading you back out to the med bay waiting area.
âI guess Iâll see you in 6 months,â you couldnât help how your smile slightly faltered as you realized your time with Dr. McCoy was coming to an end.
âIf you go on that away mission next week, then I expect to see you much sooner than that.â His eyes scanned your features, his hand still resting on the small of your back.
Thankfully the waiting room was empty and even though it was your second time meeting this man all you could think about was how intoxicating he was. His eyes seemed to drink you up, he smelled like whiskey and spice, like cinnamon and anise, and your back, it was still tingling from where his hand last rested. âThen I promise you will see me sooner than six months, Doctor.â Noticing how Leonard seemed like you hit the pause button after you used the title, it almost looked as if he was short-circuiting.Â
You glanced at the time, noticing you only had half of your lunch hour left. Spock! You stepped away from Leonard and smoothed out your uniform. âThank you for taking the time to see me today, and for informing me last night,â You gave him a soft smile, âMaybe I can bring you another coffee sometime.âÂ
Your nerves grew as you watched Leonard fold his arms over his chest before you saw a twinkle in his eye, âI think I would like that very much.â
âGreat! Sounds like a date!â You called over your shoulder, you didnât see the way Leonard flinched at the word âdate, or the way he stared after you for a couple seconds longer than he should have.
**********************************
4 months later and you now had a pretty solid routine going, you and Leonard were spending more time together, mostly due to you. Every Friday morning you would meet him in his office, coffee in hand and the two of you would sit and talk about work, while you approved reports from the following night. This was an easy transition for you, and on fridays you couldnât meet, it almost felt like you were going through withdrawals until you saw him again.
This Friday was different. The previous night you ended up spiking a fever along with a few other symptoms like chills and nausea. Spock knew you didnât like the med bay but he also trusted you enough to know he wouldnât need to restrain and carry you up to med bay, unlike the Captain. So he sent you away and let you know to contact him in the morning about how you were feeling.
From the second you opened your eyes it felt like someone had laid a 50lb dumbbell on your skull. All lights and sound hurt, even the dim lights around the floor in your cabin had you digging around, looking for a pair of sunglasses. You reached for your comm, âCommander Spock, are you awake?â
âLt Commander, you know you can call me Spock when we are off duty.â There was a brief moment of silence before he started speaking again, â(Y/N) why are you whispering?â
âI have a migraine, and while my fever is gone for now, the nausea hasnât subsided at all. Iâm calling out sick today.â You chuckled as you reminisced the last time you fell ill during the course of your friendship with Spock. It was the week before you graduated with your PhD, he didnât believe it when you didnât show up to class at the Academy. He came home, expecting you to be out, prematurely celebrating your success. Instead he found you quite literally on deathâs door. Meningitis, you had ignored the symptoms for about a week, something that Spock continuously lectured you on during your multiple day stent in the ICU.Â
âIf it gets any worse, I promise I will have you come drag me to med bay if need be.â It took all you could not to wince while you tried to smile at Spock through your comm, hoping he could hear the smile in your voice and not worry too much.
âI look forward to your recovery (Y/N), I donât know how long I can handle Jim by myself.â The vulcan let out a very human sigh, and you felt a twinge of guilt roll through you as Spock went silent on the other end.Â
âI promise Spock, Iâm not going to let a migraine and some small stomach bug take me out. Iâm resilient.â You turned off your comm before pulling the sunglasses off and laying back down in your bed, already exhausted just from walking across the room. You slowly sank back into your sheets, pulling both a pillow over your eyes and your comforter past your head, trying to drown out any ray of light that could attempt to sneak in.
******************
Leonard was becoming worried, you werenât ever late for your friday coffee meetings. Thatâs what Leonard considered them. Meetings, you sat together, always drinking a new drink or new coffee from some of the friendlier planets in the solar system. Leonard was amazed when you told him about the multiple coffee plants you had in the greenhouse, hoping to one day be able to cultivate them. They were meetings, always revolving about what the other did the previous week or what new thing was currently bogging down your workload. Leonard was a gentleman, he wouldnât consider the friday morning coffee ritual as a date, he had never formally asked you on a date, and at this point it was clear to him you didnât seem very interested in taking this friendship any further than that. Just friends.
He debated walking back out into the waiting area to see if you were there. You didnât even sign in on Fridays anymore, after the first couple weeks you would just walk into his office, coffee in hand, PADD tucked to your side. His thoughts were brought back to the conversation you had last week.
âMorning,â You greeted as you walked into his office, Leonard immediately noticed you looked off. Leonard didnât know if he could tell because he was trained in recognizing the signs of when someone was sick or if he had just been around you enough to notice the subtle differences. You hair was thrown into a low bun, you seemed to be more slouched and you looked as if you were walking through mud.Â
âMorninâ Darlinââ Leonard echoed your sentiment back as you pulled one of the chairs from in front of his desk so you were sitting right beside him. A yawn pulled itself from you as you sat the mugs down on the desk.Â
âItâs hot chocolate today,â you looked down at your hands, suddenly bashful at the thought of disappointing him with no coffee in sight, âI just donât think I can handle the caffeine today, itâs practically the only thing Iâve consumed the past 4 days and I wanted something to make me feel better,â you were almost whispering at the end of your sentence.Â
Leonard wrapped his arm around you as laid your head on his shoulder, finding solace in the crook of his neck. You were so still and quiet he could have convinced himself you had fallen asleep if it werenât for the feeling of your eyelashes brushing the exposed skin of his neck every couple of seconds. He noticed how pale you looked, the dark circles forming under your eyes.Â
He wanted to lecture you about taking care of yourself. You should know how much sleep you should be getting, but he couldnât bring himself to say anything. He knew it wasnât what you needed. He was okay being your comfort at this moment, Lord knows youâve done it plenty of times for him. Sneaking into his quarters after hours to listen to him rant after a particularly long day, He fell asleep on your lap once, he awoke to a note from you. It was an emergency, some ensign removed the wrong plant from the nursery and potentially exposed the entire staff in the greenroom to a noxious gas the plant emitted when it wasnât mature enough to be transferred out of the nursery.
âLen,â You mumbled against his neck. He couldnât help the way his heart swelled at the nickname. He hummed in response to you, âI grew the cocoa beans used to make that hot chocolate and if you donât drink it I might actually cry from exhaustion. He couldnât help the involuntary chuckle that bubbled out of him. He grabbed his mug as you sat up again, taking a sip, it was the best hot chocolate he had ever had the pleasure of drinking. He watched as you pulled out your PADD, checking the cameras in the greenhouse, before standing abruptly.Â
âI have to go. Iâm so sorry but if that ensign is about do what I think heâs doing then I could lose almost a year's worth of research!â You moved so fast you forgot all about the hot chocolate, leaving your favorite mug on his desk.Â
Leonard still had the mug, he hadnât been able to find an appropriate time to drop by your quarters to return it, but he also didnât want to intrude on your work. You always made sure to come in before the med bay opened and unless you were getting back from an away mission, you didnât hang around the med bay waiting for the chance of a quiet moment with Leonard. It was quite pleasant for him actually. Knowing that you could both go off and do your jobs, before reconnecting with each other gave him confidence in your relationship, friendship. He means friendship.Â
Leonard wiped the tired from his eyes once again before stepping out of his office. Ready to take on the day, his light just slightly dulled this morning without his ball of sunshine bounding through the door before his work had to begin. Today was going to be a long day. He grimaced, his frown deepening and the lines on his forehead etching themselves a permanent figure of the day.Â
**************************
It was finally lunch time, and Leonard had made up his mind hours before that he was going to use his lunchtime wisely and find you. His first stop was the green house, a couple of science officers were around as well as a handful of ensigns. He had walked the perimeter of the greenhouse, not finding you anywhere, not that he needed to look. Most of the time he just knew if you were somewhere. He was always able to find you. Even at the lavish holiday party the captain held for everyone Leonard was able to find you within minutes. He stayed by your side the whole night. He even danced with you a couple of times.
Lost in his thoughts he didnât notice he caught the attention of Commander Spock until it was too late. âDr. McCoy, is there anything I can help you with?âÂ
McCoy had a sinking feeling in his gut when he lifted his head up and saw Spock sitting at your desk, reading down a thorough check list to be completed by the end of the day. âIâm just looking for (Y/N). We usually do coffee in the morning on Fridays but they didnât show up today. At all. Usually theyâve already contacted me and we would have rescheduled.â Leonard was still unsure how much he could trust the Vulcan so he wasnât willing to go into further detail than that.
â(Y/N) has told me about the early morning rendezvous with you. They greatly appreciate them.â Spock straightened himself, separating the emotions from the conversation. âLt. Commander (Y/L/N) is sick. I sent them to their quarters yesterday after they developed a fever. Today they told me their symptoms were a migraine and nausea. They are extremely prone to migraines, most days the Lt. Commander can just work through them,â
â(Y/N) is sick?â Itâs not that Leonard didnât believe the vulcan but he had even seen Spock sick during this last year on the ship, but you hadnât even visited med bay once with even a case of the sniffles. Hell, because of Jim, even he had to be quarantined at least once in the last three months, âAny other symptoms I need to know about?â
âNot that I am aware of Dr. McCoy. However it seems the Lt. Commanderâs migraines have become slightly more frequent in the last couple of months.â
Leonard took a mental note of what the vulcan was saying and his next mission was to get to your quarters. He had noticed last week you didnât look like your usual self, now he was kicking himself for not pushing you to get checked out. He let his emotions for you get the better of him and he just focused on finding you. He was the CMO. He shouldn't be letting romantic emotions cloud his judgment when it comes to patient care.
Arriving at your door, Leonard gave a brief knock, waiting in the silence of the corridor to hear you call out, but there was no response, he tried his comm, âLt. Commander (Y/L/N), Commander Spock informed me you were sick, Iâm here to just make sure youâre doing okay.â No response, remembering the last time your comm went silent, a shudder ran through Leonard.Â
Another away mission, Jim said he confirmed the planet was abandoned, the only forms of life the Enterprise found were plant and animal life. Of course that turned out to not be the case and soon everything went to shit. Leonard already had his hands full with red shirts needing stitched up when everything stopped.Â
Jim and Sulu bust through the med bay doors, your limp body being held up by the two of them, âShe was walking just a few seconds ago, but now sheâs limp!â He watched Jimâs pleading eyes flickering around for anyone who was available to help. Spock was following behind and when it seemed like Jim and Sulu were about to lose their battle with supporting your dead weight, Spock stepped in and scooped you up. Cradling you in his arms like a child.
Leonard couldnât do anything for the first 30 seconds, watching the way your body just hung there, no movement from you except the extremely quick and labored breathing you were exhibiting. He fully didnât know what he was doing until he just left the red shirt sitting in front of him, having one of the nurses continue the stitches he was currently working on. When he finally reached you, it was hard to determine what blood was yours and what wasnât.
Spock laid you on the closest open bed and Leonard began scanning you, with not only his tricorder but his eyes as well. He placed two fingers on your neck and closed his eyes, ignoring the tingling that started small in his fingertips and worked its way up his arm. Your pulse was strong and the sense of relief Leonard felt was strong enough to clear his head, though he still had to focus to not drop to his knees.Â
Looking at the PADD with your scans, he had to have looked visibly confused, because both Spock and Jim had tried to peek over his shoulder to read your medical information on the device in his hand. âShe has no external injuries, and I canât find any internal bleeding. What happened out there?â
Jim spoke first, âIt was an ambush, they were waiting to show themselves until we hit the ground. (Y/N) had already made a break for the treeline, she was looking for a specific plant. They came out of nowhere, and Scotty was trying to beam us all out but he couldnât get a steady signal on (Y/N). They were engaged in battle, 3 on 1. It didnât stop until she-â Jim suddenly stopped his account of what happened on the foreign planet, almost too afraid to finish his sentence.Â
âWe were finally able to get a steady signal and beamed them to the transporter, only after Lt, Commander (Y/L/N) had been thrown into a tree,â Spock finished for the Captain.
âI could have taken them if Scotty and Chekov hadnât been yelling in my ear the entire time.â You slowly opened your eyes, bracing yourself for how bright the room surrounding you would be. âAnd it was 4 on 1 James.â There it was again, you were the only person who could get away with calling the Captain by his government name.Â
The breath Leonard didnât know he was holding released as he made his way to your side, âFrom what I heard, you kicked ass down there.âÂ
A sheepish smile was your response, he didnât know why, but he needed to be close to you, he would have sat down on the bed and pulled you into his chest if he didnât have his current audience. âYou hit your head pretty hard (Y/N), and while it doesnât look like a concussion I want to see you back here in 3 days just to make sure nothing else is going on.â
Leonard was pulled back into the present by your door opening, and there you were, gorgeous. Leonard couldnât help the small smile he felt when he looked down at you. Noticing the way your messy locks fell around your face and the out of regulation pajamas you were wearing. The dark circles under your eyes more prominent now than they were last week.
âLen, what are you doing here?â You shielded your eyes from the brightness of the hallway. Wincing in pain when you tried looking up at him.
âSpock told me you were sick. I came to check on you.â A soft shrug from him and he didnât miss how you seemed too tired to even roll your eyes at your boss for ratting you out to the CMO. You motioned at him with your hand before turning and walking back into your quarters.Â
Leonard had never actually been inside your living space until now, and he couldnât help but feel immediately at home. Photos hung on your walls, photos of you from medical school, at the academy, there was one that caught his eye immediately. You and Jim, while both younger than you are now, were instantly recognizable. Jim was holding you on his shoulders, you held your PhD in your hand. Your joy in the photo emanating into the real world. Then he saw it, your mark.Â
Perfectly placed inside your wrist, he stepped closer, he could hear his blood swishing in his ears as he finally put two and two together. There it was, staring at him. He now had proof that his entire life you had been the one he was waiting for. An uneasy feeling sank over him. He just needed to push everything down. He was a doctor, he had a job to do, and he wouldn't let this discovery change anything.
**********************
You watched as Leonard looked around your small apartment, he was currently observing the photos on your walls. You were tired, you laid down on your couch and pulled a blanket up past your head. Your migraine now just a dull throb at the back of your skull. You could now hear Leonard shuffling around your kitchenette. When you finally pulled the blanket down you could see him standing in front of you.
There was a mug in one hand, and a tricorder in the other. âLeonard, I promise Iâm fine. Itâs just a migraine.â
Leonard scoffed before setting the mug down, âAccording to Commander Spock, your migraines have been more frequent lately, he also mentioned a fever and nausea.â
âSpock canât keep his damn mouth shut can he?â You replied before moving into a sitting position and allowing the doctor to scan you. You hummed as his hand brushed across your wrist, immediately finding the spot to check your pulse.
âI was worried about you, ya know,â Leonard softly spoke. âWhen you didnât show up this morning I knew something was wrong,â his sentence ended in a mumble of words. You couldnât help but reach up and place a hand on his cheek.Â
âI apologize for making you worry, Doctor.â This time, you could feel his jaw slightly clench and you watched his Adam's apple bob as he swallowed.Â
â(Y/N),â you noticed he was closer now, hovering mere inches from your face.Â
âYes Leonard?â You could hear the catch in your breath as you spoke. His breath fanned across your face, the mintiness from brushing his teeth still lingering. The proximity of being so close had your heart going crazy and you couldnât seem to think straight. As quickly as the moment started, he ended it. Pulling away and tucking his tricorder into his hip.Â
âWell, everything seems fine, and nothing is broken.â He made his way to your door. âDrink the tea, and take it easy for the next couple of days,â and with that he opened the door and walked away.
******************************
You hadnât seen Leonard for two weeks, even on your last away mission he had someone else do you exam. He wouldnât even come out of his office while you were in med bay. The daily throb in your heart of the rejection didnât stop your stride but it definitely slowed it. You were second guessing yourself and you couldnât seem to focus unless you had someone else to hold you accountable. You slept more these days, not being able to stay late in the greenhouse for the fear that your mind would start to wander and then you had your heart breaking all over again.
Sitting in the mess hall with Spock at lunch you were approached by an ensign. A yellow shirt, and when you looked behind him, you could see Sulu intently watching the interaction unfolding in front of him. âLt Commander (Y/L/N), I was hoping I could invite you to the party weâre having tonight.â
You smiled up at him, intending to find a way to gently let him down, when the unsuspecting doctor walked into the mess hall, and you couldnât help but smirk, motioning him closer to you, you decided to just be honest, âListen kid, Iâm sure youâre great, but someone already has my heart.â You watched their face slightly falter, âHowever, theyâre too stubborn to admit it, help me make him jealous and I think I can talk to the Captain about your incredible performance.âÂ
You werenât expecting the quick nod of their head or the salute they sent your way from the table, keeping the smile on your face, you couldnât help but laugh as Spock finally made eye contact with you. âI donât see how you attending a party with a member from the flight crew could in any way make Dr. McCoy jealous.âÂ
You could hear the ensign talking to Sulu as Dr. McCoy passed their table, âShe said yes!â The ensign looked back over at you and waved, you made sure an enthusiastic smile was planted on face as you waved back, pretending not to feel Leonardâs glare boring into you as you turned back to Spock, âJust like that Commander Spock.â The vulcan couldnât help the sigh of disappointment. Why must the two of you make things so complicated?
       âLt. Commander, wouldnât it just be easier to tell Dr. McCoy, how you feel about him?âÂ
     You sighed, eyes bouncing around the room before landing down at the plate of replicated food in front of you, âI wish. Heâs been avoiding me for 2 weeks now. Hell, the other day I helped another science officer to med bay and he wouldnât even look at me,â you shrugged your shoulders before collecting your belongings, âI think maybe I should turn my affections elsewhere as Dr. McCoy has made it clear to me that he would no longer like a friendship with me, let alone a romantic relationship.â You turned on your heel, already done with the conversation and quite frankly done with the way your thoughts were constantly brought back to the man who wanted nothing to do with you.
     You didnât even see Leonard approach your table at the end of your conversation with Spock, determined to outrun the wave of emotions you could feel rising up in your chest.Â
******************
   The party was great, it really was, but you felt so out of place. Parties werenât usually your thing and the ensign who asked you to the party quickly forgot about you as soon as you defended Spock in the middle of a heated conversation. Sulu ended up having to coax you away from the group as the insults toward your best friend kept coming, and you quickly rolled up your sleeves.Â
âHey, youâre okay, anyone who really knows Spock knows that heâs actually a really great guy.â Sulu rubbed your arm as he led you to the bar. âPlus, it would be a little uncomfortable to end up in med bay right now.â
You scoffed and could help the incredulous look you gave him, âI wouldnât have ended up anywhere but my cabin. The best part is none of them would have even known who I was until Captain Kirk inevitably got involved, and I also know that James would throw himself on top of a live grenade for me.â
Sulu couldnât help but roll his eyes at you before handing you one of the drinks he ordered, âYou and the captain are close too?âÂ
âYeah, heâs like an older brother. My mom and his dad were close, so he was over all the time when we were younger, heâs the one who pushed me to apply for my doctorate degree and even filled out a couple of applications behind my back, and he protected me more than once from creeps when he would sneak me into the bar with him.â You downed another drink the drink and looked at the crowd opposite of where you currently were, âI could still take him,âÂ
âHow many of those have you had tonight?â Sulu nodded at the empty glass in your hand.
You shrugged, setting the glass back down on the bar, âI lost count about 30 minutes ago.â
The comment earned you another laugh from the man beside you and suddenly your comm went off, âLt. Commander! Itâs great to see you here!â Your head suddenly turned into a swivel as you scanned the party, looking for the biggest pain in your ass you had ever met. Someone grabbed your shoulder from behind you and reflexively threw them over you to the ground, before placing a foot on their chest to keep them on the ground.
The laugh that followed had smoke coming out of your ears and suddenly you were a teenager again, âChekov! Donât do that!â You couldnât help but stomp your foot on the ground, âI could have hurt you!â
âDid you just stomp your foot? Are you throwing a tantrum right now?â You helped Chekov off the ground and you noticed how he had been grinning the entire time.
âHow am I supposed to get any peace on this ship when I have a gaggle of men I have to constantly keep from killing themselves?â You feigned anger and dramatically threw your hand back to your forehead.Â
âWell, who else would keep us in check if we didnât have you?â The puppy dog eyes from both Sulu and Chekov broke past your resolve and you pulled both of them into a hug. Kissing both of them on the top of the head before pulling away.
âWhoâs gonna take care of you when Iâm gone? Iâm 25 now, in my prime, someone could wife me up right now and Iâd be whisked away in a flurry of love and babies.â You watched the horror spread over their faces and you couldnât help but feel proud of yourself.
Chekov quickly dropped to one knee and you couldnât help the feeling of embarrassment that filled you, a pit in your stomach forming and even with the threatening look on your face, the ensign didnât move off the ground, âWell, if youâre going to get married, I think we both,â he paused and nodded at Sulu who couldnât help the comical smile on his face as he stared at the scene unfolding in front of him. âWould prefer if you did get married that you wouldnât be whisked away from us.â
You couldnât help but laugh, the first real laugh you had experienced in weeks, and soon you were laughing so hard you had tears pricking at the back of your eyes, âYouâre really taking marrying up to a whole new level,â you dropped into a squat, resting your body weight on your balls of your feet as you got within eye level of your friend, âYouâre drunk Chekov, you wouldnât remember this in the morning if you wanted too.â You gently pushed on him back by his forehead, as you expected Chekov, who was extremely drunk for this early in the night, fell backwards. What you didnât expect was him flailing, grabbing you, and throwing you down the stairs from the bar after him.Â
Everything that happened next was in fast forward as a group of people were on both of you, you could feel your face flush with embarrassment. As swiftly as the embarrassment settled, the overstimulation was sudden and you were going to freak out. There were too many people, people were trying to touch you, some trying to help you up, and everyone was speaking at once. You closed your eyes, you could feel an ache in your head, and something warm in your hair. You could hear James shuffling through the crowd, using his captain's voice to part the sea of swarming people.Â
â(Y/N) are you okay?â You were lifted to your feet, wincing as he put pressure on your shoulder. James instantly repositioned the way he was supporting you. You quickly looked around and saw Chekov, he came bounding over to you as soon as you were up.
âChekov, are you okay?â You reached up and started inspecting him, which earned you a laugh.
âI just tucked and rolled!â He spun in front of you as if to prove his point.Â
âYeah,â you suddenly noticed the pain in your shoulder was growing, âWish I got a heads up,â you couldnât help but laugh with the ensign and you rested most of your weight against your longest known friend.Â
â(Y/N) youâre bleeding. From your head. We gotta go.âÂ
You looked up at him, trying to pull your best puppy dog eyes through the growing pain, âBut James, it just got fun!â
âRemember when you said that after your commissioning?â
You groaned, you had been trying to forget about that night since it happened, you got drunk. Totally wasted with James at a surprise party he threw for you , cheering you on and even challenging you to go shot for shot. You fell off the second story balcony, thankfully into bushes, but nevertheless walked away with a concussion and a pretty nasty bruise that consumed most of your lower back. âFine, letâs go.â
*********************
Jim regretfully walked you to med bay, he wondered if this is what he put Bones through everytime he got sick or injured, âWhat is going on with you tonight?â
âI really donât want to go to med bay and I really really donât want to see Leonard McCoy.â You automatically imitated the grumpy doctor, even furrowing your brows like he would.
âI thought you two were friends?â What had he missed, the last time Bones had talked about you, he thought the two of you had something, it was the most he had seen his friend smile in, well, the entire time he had known him.
You bellowed a dry, sarcastic laugh, âYeah, me too.â You looked away from him, suddenly more interested in the floor than the conversation you were having, âI thought we could have been more,â you whispered under your breath.Â
Jim stopped walking, turning your head so he could look you in the eyes, â(Y/N), Bon- Leonard is a complicated man. He doesnât always know whatâs best for him right away. Even when the best thing to happen to him is right in front of him.â
You shook your head, trying to break the look Jim was giving you, âNo, itâs my fault. I thought he was going to kiss me. I read the signs all wrong, and now he hasnât talked to me in 16 days, and now Iâve ruined a perfectly good friendship.âÂ
Jim wiped away a tear that started sliding down your cheek, pulling you into his chest and kissing the top of your head. You gently sobbed into his chest, trying to be quiet in the corridor with a few people still bustling around you. His heart breaking at seeing you this heartbroken. He had been there for other break ups, most of the time you rationalized it, even to him.Â
âIt wasnât meant to beâ was after Chandler, a snotty rich kid who tried desperately to buy his way into your pants. He tried using his dadâs rank to intimidate you, trying to use the power of someone else to make you do what he wanted. Even after you had broken things off, there were some nights you would still sleep on Jimâs couch, afraid to go back to your dorm. He wasnât a problem for you much longer.
âShe just wasnât the one,â was after Savannah. Someone who you remained in contact with to this day. You were there when Savannah got her dream job, she thanked you in her speech when she graduated top of her class, and most importantly you were her daughterâs godmother. Every shore leave, every break from school, you made her and her family one of your top priorities. Jim had even seen you leave study groups or parties just to go spend time with her.
âMy soulmate is still out there,â Was after Ashton. It had been a few years, Jim thought you guys were happy, but then came the inevitable. You stormed into his apartment, not even bothering to knock as there was nothing Jim was going to be doing that you hadnât seen at least once already. He was married. You were humiliated, you didnât go out unless you were going to school for weeks. Beating yourself up for not knowing. Jim had to remind you countless times that it wasnât your fault, you had no idea of knowing that this man was married, hell Jim even did digging of his own after things got serious and he couldnât find anything.Â
He couldnât help the look of pity he gave you as you pulled yourself out of his chest, wincing at the pain as he released you. âWhatever happened to the girl who could rationalize these things? Your other half is still out there,â he said softly.
More tears welled up in your eyes. You shook your head again, more violently this time, as if trying to shake the tears away. He couldnât help but empathize with your sorrow. He would have put the pieces together himself if you had given him time, but you spoke again. âJames, he is the one. And now he wonât even look at me.â
Jimâs eyes widened in disbelief. Never in the entire time of knowing you did he think you would ever say those words. It was supposed to be the two of you, lone wolves for the rest of your lives. âYou really love him, donât you?â he asked, pulling you into his side. You nodded, and he kept his arm around your ribcage for support, careful to avoid putting pressure on your shoulder. âAnd you should probably try to stop crying before we walk through that door.â
**********************
Walking into med bay, you couldnât help but feel mortified at how you must look. You could feel the blood in your hair even more now, and you couldnât even bear to lift the arm with the damaged shoulder. Not to mention how the makeup you wore for the night probably looked after you cried into Jamesâs chest. You quickly glanced at him, stifling a laugh as you pointed at the mascara stain on the dress shirt he was currently wearing.Â
âYou think thatâs funny?â You watched as he dramatically tried to wipe the makeup off his shirt. âYa know, this better win me some brownie points.âÂ
You laughed harder at the comment, âSpeaking of brownie points, I promised the ensign who asked me to the party that if he helped me make Leonard jealous I would put in a good for him with you.â You couldnât help the dreamy smile that fell on your face just mentioning him, âThen he said Spock was an asshole and now I think we should just shoot him out into the void of space.â
âI forgot how mean you get when you drink.â
âWho else do we have tonight?â You didnât want to turn around, the southern drawl in his voice was something you didnât even notice how much you had missed until this very moment. You wanted to cower behind James, you wanted to run and hide. You wanted to beg James to turn around and patch you up in your quarters. Before you could speak, James did.Â
âWell, I decided to throw a party and things got a little out of hand. The Lt. Commander was practically thrown down a flight of stairs. I think they have dislocated a shoulder and theyâre bleeding. From the head.âÂ
You couldnât stop yourself when you jabbed an elbow into his ribcage, pushing through the pain to let him know how you felt, âIâm fine, I just hurt a little bit.â
James poked you in the shoulder, using the littlest bit of pressure, causing you to rear back and stifle down a groan of pain, âYou asshole!â
You didnât miss the sigh or the eye roll from the handsome doctor in front of you, and now you were pissed. You were trying to have a good time tonight, and yet absolutely no one was able to take him off your mind, and now here you were, standing in front of him, looking like a complete mess, âListen, you obviously donât want me here, and quite frankly I donât want to be here, so if you could just put my shoulder back in place so I can go away, that would be great.â You sighed before turning away from them and finding the closest open bed, âStop looking at me like that James, I can feel your eyes in the back of my head.âÂ
You couldnât hop onto the bed without jostling everything that hurt, so you chose to plant yourself in one of the visitor chairs beside the bed. Your head resting back against the wall, closing your eyes and trying to prevent the tears trying to escape, the pain now moving toward the range of extreme and you finally touched your head. Pulling it away to inspect your fingers, there was the blood now sticky. You sighed, annoyed with the fact that showering after tonight was going to be hard.
********************************
Leonard pushed through the privacy curtain and for a couple of moments he just looked you over with his eyes. Jim had told him what happened. The thought of Chekov proposing, no matter how fake, seemed to enrage him. The thought of you with any man did that to him, not to mention the blatant flirting in the mess hall the other day. He wanted to track down the ensign who asked you to the party down, give him a piece of his mind. He wanted to let the ensign know that he shouldnât be hitting on his woman.
But you werenât his, were you? Jim let him know about the conversation in the hallway, how you cried after telling him how long it had been since he had been icing you out. Has it really been 16 days? Jim told him he needed to fix it. Leonard wasnât sure he could. How would he even go about letting you know that the only reason he was acting this way was so he didnât break your heart. He was damaged, and had too much baggage for someone as sweet as you. He didnât want to ruin you.
Looking at you now though, past the injuries of the night, Leonard realized that his way of trying not to cause you any harm was actually doing the most harm. Your eyes were closed, but still slightly puffy and tear streaks had etched their way onto your cheeks. The blood in your hair now drying and matting your hair together. From just looking at your current posture he wasnât too concerned with any broken bones, but he suspected Jim was probably right about the dislocated shoulder.Â
He cleared his throat to get your attention, watching closely as your eyes slightly opened. He didnât miss the glimmer in your eye as you finally looked at him, and when you held his gaze Leonard let out a breath he didnât know he was holding in. The need to be close to you reared its head again and it took all of his self control to not sprint the short distance to you. He sat on the med bay bed so he was closer to eye level. He didnât really know what to say.Â
âHi,â
Your eyes widened and your mouth fell open at his opening line choice. âHi? Are you fucking kidding me? Hi?â You threw your good hand in the air, wincing from the sudden change in posture, as you whisper screamed at him. The both of you knew there was an extremely high chance Jim was trying to eavesdrop on the two of you.
âWhat else am I supposed to say?â Leonard almost couldnât believe himself, who says hi?
âMaybe, Iâm an ass for not talking to you for 2 weeks but let me stitch up your head.â
âI am sn sss.âÂ
You huffed, sitting up straighter, âOr maybe, it looks like your shoulder is dislocated, let's get it back into place and get you out of here.â
âIf thatâs what you want me to do.âÂ
âOf course I want you to fix me! Why else would I drag myself down here?â
So you wanted to fight, Leonard could do that, âOh, so you have to drag yourself down here?â
âRight now, yeah? I literally have no other choice!â
Leonard wanted to smirk, âSo you only wanted me because you had no other choice?â
You gasped and looked at the ground, âYou know thatâs not what I meant.âÂ
Leonard stood, grabbing the PADD he had with him, âIâm not the one who said it.âÂ
âYeah, and Iâm not the one who made me fall in love with you.â Leonard froze, just barely able to hear you, you had dropped into a barely audible whisper. Leonard didnât know if it was from fear of saying it outloud or hoping he wouldnât hear it.
âYeah, well what are you going to do about that?â
He watched as your head snapped up, and if looks could kill Leonard was sure his head would have exploded right then and there, âYouâve obviously already made your choice, so maybe just get me the hell out of here and transfer my care to someone else. That way you'll never have to see me again.â
He sighed, not really wanting to do this now, but it looks like he was going to have no other choice, â(Y/N)-â
âSave it. I donât want to hear it, now please, just fix me enough so that I can go back to my quarters and shower, I need to get this blood out of my hair.â
â(Y/N)-â
âIâm serious-â
âIf you would shut up you would know that Iâm in love with you too!â
Leonard had never raised his voice at you before, and the look on your face made him regret it instantly. He crouched in front of you and cradled your face in his hands, âI am so head over heels for you Darlinââ He looked into your eyes, searching for anything other than the rage they currently held, âIt scared me. That night in your room, when I saw the way you were looking at me, I knew. I never wanted anyone to look at me the way you did. I panicked. I ran and hid, hoping that if I just pushed everything down for long enough then-â He sighed again, his breath feeling like a cotton ball in his throat.
******************
You were pissed. Angry at Leonard for ignoring you, angry that you were in med bay, angry that Leonard wouldnât shut the fuck up. You were trying so hard to move past the feelings you had for him, but you always seemed to end up right back in front of him.Â
âWhy?â You couldnât stop your mouth from moving, even though in this moment you desperately wanted him to shut up. You could hear how tired he was, making the southern accent more prominent, making your heart swell.Â
âWell, Iâm broken. Told Jim that Jocelyn took everything in the divorce. All I got is my bones.â
âSo thatâs where the nickname comes from? James tries so hard to call you Leonard to my face, like the nickname is a secret or something.â You could feel the way he looked at you, choosing to focus on the nickname instead of anything else he just told you. âLeonard, we can continue this conversation later, but my shoulder really hurts. Please help me.â
Leonard helped you onto the bed, and slightly straightened you up. âUm, I need to take your shirt off, I need to see-â
You couldnât help but blush. You had thought this before, not in this context. Your fantasies usually revolved around his office, in the shower, maybe you thought about you and him in the greenhouse once or twice, but never like this, âIâm gonna need some help with that.â
Leonard slowly pulled your arm out of the sleeve, and you almost thought you could see him shaking, âLen, Iâm not made of porcelain.â You could hear him release the breath he was holding, his thumb dancing over your wrist. Soon enough you were topless, you could see a bruise forming. Your shoulder felt so wrong. You almost couldnât describe it. It felt taut like it was being pulled, but you felt like you had no control, you couldnât shrug if you tried.Â
âThis is gonna hurt, according to these scans not only is your shoulder dislocated but you have a torn AC ligament.â He laid you down, placing your arm down over the edge of the bed, and quickly pulling your arm into a 90 degree angle, while rotating your arm. You felt the relief as you heard your shoulder pop back into place. Then the hypo, and if your shoulder still didnât throb a little you would have hit Leonard.
âThatâs gonna help with the pain and swelling, and this one,â He stabbed you again, âIs gonna help with that ligament, but you cannot lift anything heavier than 15 pounds until I clear you, and because this can still affect your range of motion, weâll still have to keep a close eye on it. Usually for a dislocated shoulder we would recommend a sling, but weâre going to need movement if you want to be able to maintain your current quality of life.â
âOkay, and the treatment plan?â You sat up and gingerly pulled your shirt over your head.
âWell the fact you were able to do that is a good sign.â He took a step back from you, âStand up and hold your arms directly out in front of you,â You did, your left arm not reaching quite as high as your right hand, âNow out to the side,â again, the left shoulder not quite as high. âDrop them to your sides and shrug,â You almost couldnât. Trying with all of your might to move your left side up to your chin. The smallest inch of movement had you content.Â
â4-6 weeks,â Leonard smashed the contentedness. âI know, it seems like a long time, but (Y/N) losing range of motion for your line of work would hinder you in more ways than one. Even with the medicine we have, we can only speed up the human body's healing time by so much. If it was any worse I would have said 8.â He took a step closer to you and took your hand in his. âNow stop pouting and let me check your head.â
*****************************************
It had been 3 days since the last time you had seen Leonard, the longest amount of time the two of you had gone since that night in med bay. You had even spent the night once or twice. However, this time you werenât anxious about it. He didnât consume your thoughts like before and for the first time in weeks, you finally felt like you were back in your groove. You were on the last 2 week stretch of desk duty, and not surprisingly you were spending most of the time following Spock around, or wandering around the greenhouse, trying to politely remind people that your way was the right way and you were actively writing the protocol for this.
However, right now you were moping. Looking like someone ate your candy and you couldnât help it. Everyone who you could bother during the day was gone. A new planet, going where no man has gone before, or whatever the excuse was. You just knew you were bored and there was no one around to entertain you. You soon found yourself wandering to med bay, hoping that you could catch a moment alone with Leonard. You waved at the nurse sitting at the desk, before making your way to Leonard's office. You knocked on the door and when you didnât hear a response you slowly opened the door.
Stepping into the office you glanced around, it was empty. You frowned even more, wanting to fold your arms over your chest and huff. You made your way back to the desk and faced the nurse. âWhereâs Dr. McCoy?â
âThe captain asked him to join the team going down the surface today.â
âOh, okay. Can you let him know I stopped by? He wanted me to come down for a follow up.â
The young boy sitting behind the desk smiled at you and straightened his posture a little, âYeah, can I get a name? Lt. Commander (Y/N). Thank you.â You smiled back before heading back out into the hallway.Â
Back in the greenhouse you couldnât stay focused, wanting to wander and more than enough times trying to sneak in and help with the rearranging currently going on. Every time someone caught you and every time they threatened to tell Spock. Eventually you conceded, holing yourself away in your office. You couldnât help the way you stared off into literal space. Not being able to keep your mind busy with anything work related, you decided to give up. You pulled out your PADD and started drawing. Focus every bit of [ent up energy into the smallest details on the pagesâŠÂ
Just wanting something to keep you busy. And you were now in a field, it looked like home. Yellow dandelions and honeysuckle sprouting up everywhere, you could feel the cool grass beneath your toes. The wind was warm and steady. The sky was cornflower blue and white wispy clouds were scattered throughout. You finally felt calm. You closed your eyes, trying to breathe in the moment. A hand grasped yours, you looked over and there he was. The man who completely consumed your dreams. You could see it. This is where you spent most of your time, the space you went to in duress.Â
The image shifted, now you were in a house. Your momâs home. It smelled exactly as you remembered. You heard the kettle on the stove and made your way to the kitchen, laughter floated through the air. The kitchen now in view, your mom was now at the counter, filling a group of mugs that sat on the counter. Behind you at the kitchen island, stood Leonard, chopping vegetables and bantering with your dad.
The image rippled behind you, changing the scenery and you were still on earth, but this was your home. The place you started and the place you would end. When you decided to move to Washington, James helped you. Packed only what you needed and took the road trip with you, only along for the memories. Your homestead spread before you. Your eyes automatically drifted to the chicken coop. Leonard was there, several of your hens grouped around his feet as he spread bird seed for them.
âI donât think chickens would be that big of a fan of me,â You jumped as Leonard made himself known behind you. You slowly made your way to him, suddenly anxious about the interaction, âI heard you were looking for me?â
You almost forgot, you laughed to yourself before explaining, âYeah, it wasnât anything important. I was bored, and both James and Spock were gone! I canât do anything with this damn arm and I needed stimulation. I didnât know James stole you too!â You lightly hit him in the chest and scowled, âI thought we had a rule.â
The doctor suddenly looked bashful as he stared at your feet, âThere was an exception to the rule,â From behind his back, he revealed a plant. It looked like a venus fly trap, but it was maroon. â âIt looks like dionaea muscipula, but Iâve never seen one this color. Or as large.â You gently cradled the propagate in your hands, breathing gently as you inspected it. âUsually 10cm is the largest they get. This one could be significantly bigger.â You finally looked up at him, tears slightly welling up in your eyes, âThank you,âÂ
Suddenly you were surrounded by him. His hand on your face, his smell swirling around, and most importantly his lips on yours. They were soft, a complete contrast to the finger grazing over your cheek. You couldnât help but smile into the kiss as you leaned into him. He wrapped his free hand around your waist and pulled you against him. You were hyper aware of the feeling of his chest against yours, you swore your breathing was in sync.Â
Leonard pulled away first, deciding that air was actually a vital part of his plan to have a future with you. He rested his forehead against yours, placing a chaste kiss to your nose, âMaybe I can get used to the chickens.â
*******************************
Leonard practically dragged you out to the turbolift. Only giving you a split second to stop by the greenhouse to drop off your new favorite thing. Surprised you were able to make the short ride to his quarters without your hands all over each other. He held your hand the entire time and you couldnât help but notice how opposite the two of you looked. Leonard with a determined look taking over his features, he was desperate to be alone with you and he couldnât stop bouncing as you waited to arrive at the correct floor. You, on the other hand, looked completely love drunk. Still reeling from the kiss, just happy to be near him and along for the ride.
He pulled you down the hallway and you did everything you could to stay on your feet as you tripped after him. He turned back to look before picking you up, tossing you over his shoulder and he resumed his pace. You let a giggle fall out of you, hanging over his back, staring at the floor. He hummed in response, and you couldnât help but shake your head, knowing he couldnât see you, deciding to keep this to yourself. He stopped, arriving at his door, and soon you were in the darkness and privacy of his personal space. The room is familiar in the dim lighting from the late night visits that happened occasionally. He continued, moving to a space you had never seen before, his bedroom.
You couldnât help the flurry you were feeling in your stomach, suddenly aware of everything around you. Taking in what the room looked like, you could definitely see Leonard in the space, it was nicely decorated. The sheets looked soft, a rich phthalo green with matching comforter. The night stands were simply decorated, with a single light on each, one of them holding a photo of he and James at the Academy. The rest of the room had small trinkets, and a couple of dirty clothes were sitting on a chair in the corner. What really caught your eye was the small purple succulent sitting on his dresser.
âYou put him on your dresser?â You couldnât help but ask, knowing he would know exactly what you were talking about. The succulent was your first surviving propagation of its kind. You had affectionately named him âJimâ.
âYeah, I brought him home that very day. Iâve been following all your rules. Even had Scotty set me up special lights so the little could get the effects on sunlight.â He set you down on the bed and looked at you, before stepping forward and weaving his way between your legs, currently towering over you. You wanted to drool, you were sure this was heaven. He was kissing you again, this time deeper than before, his tongue already begging as you moved your lips against his. Ever so slightly you moved back onto the bed, slowly lying down as Leonard climbed on top of you. His hands slowly moved up your shirt and you couldnât help but try and press your body against his hands. Trying to desperately communicate the need for his touch.
âLen,â you whispered and he looked at you. His eyes softened as he took in the sight of you, a hand coming up to cup your cheek, you couldnât help but pull him into a hug, pulling him down until his entire body weight was on top of you. You couldnât help the contented sigh that fell from your lips as you embraced this feeling. He felt like a weighted blanket on top of you, bringing a sense of peace with him as your breathing synced together, âI missed you.â
âI missed you too Darlinââ Your hands grabbed the back hem of his shirt, gently tugging and trying to pull it up his body, Leonard picking up the hints. Moving off you, he finished the job you were working on, before you sat up, allowing him to pull your shirt off you. âYouâre gorgeous,â again you wrapped up in a kiss, and it was everything you had been dreaming about since you met him.Â
Soon enough, you were naked, your lower half dangling off the edge of the bed, Leonard stroking himself as he stared at you. You swore you could feel his eyes burning into your skin as he raked you over, looking as if he was trying to memorize every inch of your body, the adoration radiating off him made you want to cry. You couldnât remember a time anyone had made you feel this way just from a look. You didnât know why you were suddenly so emotional, but now you were worried you were ruining the moment. You saw Leonardâs face change as he moved toward you.Â
â(Y/N)?â He scooped you up, sitting you on his lap, his thumb brushing away the one rogue tear that escaped, âWhatâs wrong?â
You shook your head and smiled, âNothing, it was just the way you looked at me.â You turned around in his lap, straddling him. You slowly kissed your way around his jaw line, up to his ear before gently nibbling on his ear lobe. You kept your lips pressed to his skin as you whispered in his ear, âNow, where were we Doctor?â
You shivered as he gripped your thighs, you slowly hiked yourself up placing one hand on Leonardâs shoulder to keep yourself steady using the other to line yourselves up. You didnât miss the way he bit down on his lip as soon as your hand wrapped around his cock. Slowly easing yourself down onto him, you slowly stretched down until your thighs were touching his, placing both arms on his shoulders as you gave a few small bounces just to adjust yourself. Adjusting your knees, you started rotating your hips while setting a steady pace as you started to spring up and down. Having to quickly adjust when Leonard dropped to his elbows, and you came with him.Â
He now had the upper hand, using one arm to wrap around your waist, keeping you in place, using the other to hold your chin, maintaining eye contact as he set a brutal pace, his hips almost smashing into yours. The new angle had changed and suddenly you couldnât stop the moan that fell from your lips, seeing a smirk appear on Leonardâs face. âYou sound so pretty,â He swiped his thumb over your lips and instinctively you slightly parted your mouth, âSay my name darlin.ââ
You couldnât help the heat that burned your cheeks, deciding to try and get back at him for the compromising position he put you in, âLeona-â You didnât get to finish his name before his hips stopped moving. His arm is still locking you in place. You wanted to pout at the sudden loss of movement but didnât have enough time as you were on your back now. Legs resting around his hips, his free hand now gripping one of your hips, as he slowly leaned in closer.
He adjusted the way he was holding your chin, he now rested your chin in the dip between his thumb and index finger, with each holding onto your jaw and adjusting your head to look at him, âI donât think you heard me, whatâs my name?â
âDr. McCoy,â You looked at him through lidded eyes, eyes closing at his grip on your jaw tightened for a split second, before his hand on your hip pulled you closer to him. Settling a tortuous pace as he thrust into you, hiking your hips higher up as you started thrusting up towards him, desperate for more. He slowed down for a split second, a hand coming to rest by your throat. His fingers instinctively fell on your carotid.Â
âAre you sure youâre feeling okay? Your heart rate seems pretty elevated,â He softly widened his grip, his hand now resting at the base of your neck.
âI was hoping you could tell me Doctor,â Leonard leaned down close to you, his fingers already slowly inching to either side of your neck, âAre you okay with this.âÂ
You quickly nodded your head and wiggled your body, closer to his, âYes Le-â You swallowed, avoiding eye contact with him, âYes Dr, McCoy.â
He applied pressure to the sides of your throat, you tilted your head back, almost as if you were presenting your neck to him and you could have died hearing the low moans Leonard was placing in your ear. You hummed as your eyes drifted shut, and you could feel the coil that had been tightening was ready to snap.Â
âI want to spend the rest of my life with you (Y/N),â He thrust to punctuate every word and there you went. You gasped and drug your nails down his back as your thighs tightened around his waist. Leonard released his grip from around your neck and pulled away from you, spilling all over your stomach. He was gone the next second, before returning with a warm wash rag, practically wiping you down from head to toe. You couldnât help yourself when you settled down under the sheets, face buried in the pillows that smelt like him.
Leonard soon returned, climbing into the bed beside you and pulling you into his chest. Kissing the top of your head before speaking, âAre you okay? I know that got intense pretty fast,â His fingers were absentmindedly running through your hair.
You yawned, moving yourself closer so your ear was pressed up against his chest, his heartbeat thrumming in your ears. You nodded against his ribcage, âIâm fine. Iâm great actuallyâŠand the âDoctor Thingâ is kinda hot.â You could feel his chest shake with a silent laugh and you yawned again. Pulling the blanket up to your neck and quickly falling into the best sleep you had received in weeks.
****************************
Leonard instinctively grabbed for you when he rolled over half awake in bed. He received no reprieve from the empty sheets, they were still slightly warm, and now he was wide awake. Scanning the room with his eyes, he couldnât see you anywhere. There was something new on the dresser and he slowly made his way over to it. It was a note from you, and he couldnât help but notice how elegant your handwriting was as it scrawled across the page. âI needed coffee, and you have none. Come find me if you would like a cup.âÂ
Leonard almost seemed like he was on autopilot as he dressed and brushed his teeth, leaving his quarters with only his comm and a mission to see you again. He quickly arrived in front of your door, and knocked within the same breath, realizing how desperate he was to see you. Now you stood in front of him, in a white t-shirt. He swallowed thickly as he could see your nipples pressed against the fabric, noticing how the pajama pants you stole from him hung around your waist.
He noticed the way you were looking at him, eyes still slightly coated with tiredness as they scanned his face, he tried to remain as untroubled as possible, trying not to give any signs of doubt as he stared back at you. He had something important he needed to tell you. You slowly reached out and grabbed his hand, pulling him back into your quarters with you. Leonard could smell the freshly ground coffee and finally took a glance around now that he was here again. Taking in more than just the photos on your walls.Â
He watched as you made your way across the room from him, back toward the espresso machine that sat on your counter, âNow how did you manage to pull that off?â
You looked over your shoulder as you giggled, âListen, when it comes to Starfleet, Iâm not dumb. I know that Iâm a nepo baby and I know that I could have everything the easy way. I could take advantage of everything and everyone would let me. James could too.â Leonard scoffed as you started swirling and lightly tapping your steamed milk, âI know that my last name carries a legacy that I wonât ever feel I have earned.â You started slowly pouring the milk into a steel Starfleet mug, âHowever, almost everyone else thinks that just carrying her name is enough to give me the world. Spock knew that, he challenged me all throughout my time in Starfleet, and yes the age gap was definitely weird for everyone at first, but he sees something in me, something I never will.â You looked up at him as you started tamping your espresso, âAdmiral Pike knew that. Itâs because he knows me. Iâve called that man Uncle Chris since I could talk. He knew a pay bump wasnât going to get me to leave my station. Especially to come to the ship he was the first captain of. So he gave me Spock, and a brand new espresso machine.âÂ
Your fingers tapped on the edge of the counter as you bit your bottom lip. You grabbed your finished espresso shot, holding it up to the light and inspecting it. âI was a barista once, and I loved it, it gave me something that made me feel like me. The other people in the coffee shop didnât know who I was, or if they did they didnât care.â You were practically speaking into the counter as you delicately poured the shot over your milk. âMy mom would have loved it. If thereâs one thing my dad drilled into my head, itâs that I didnât have to choose Starfleet.â You now held a bottle filled with a purple syrup. You steadied your hand as you etched a simple crosshatch pattern into the top of the foam.
âIâve been thinking about what you said in med bay for a couple days now,â You quickly sanitized everything, exchanging steaming pitchers, mugs, and even the shot glass, âMy mom, is the reason I do anything in this life.â He watched as you started your process over again. Moving at a slightly quicker pace this time, âShe died when I saw 5. Itâs been 20 years and yet her birthday still feels like my day of atonement.â Leonard noticed how you adjusted the amount of coffee in the puck and the amount of water, âMy last relationship ended because he proposed, and then I found out he had a wife.â You couldnât help but happily gasp as you finally watched the shots finish pulling.Â
âJust because you were married the person you, at one point in time, loved,â You were now steadily pouring the milk into the espresso that laid in the bottom on the mug, the stream of milk coming from your steaming pitcher couldnât have been thicker than a pencil, âIt doesnât mean that youâre broken, and if you are, then so am I. And so is James. And Spock as well. Every single person on this ship,â You handed him the mug, âIs broken in some way, and it doesnât make them any less worthy of love.âÂ
You cradled your mug in your hands before sitting across from him, in a small armchair you managed to tastefully squeeze in the small living room provided to you, âI love Spock, and I love James,â you swiftly pulled your legs underneath you, âAnd I love you, Leonard. And you are worthy of love.â
You slowly took a sip from your mug, watching his reaction as you tried to keep a somewhat safe distance from him, it wasnât every day you could pull that conversation out of thin air. You became somewhat concerned as Leonard stared at his coffee, after a couple more seconds he looked at you and you felt like you could breathe again.
âDo you remember the first time you ever came to med bay? The conversation we had?
************************
Leonard couldnât help but stare at the perfect white dot that stood perfectly in the middle of the carmel colored drink from the milk and espresso mixing together. He felt breathless. You remembered, this was the first time he had coffee made by you since he ran away. He swore he could feel his heart swell, looking at the act of love made right in front of his face. âAnd I love you, Leonard. And you are worthy of love.â He wanted to run. To move out of your eyesight, and if he could, out of your life.
He couldnât. He wouldnât dare. You were here, why would he ever leave? He took in everything around him, trying to stifle his nervous system that was telling him to abort the mission. He swore he could see the flashing red lights in his vision. He finally looked at you and the room was alive and it was all because of you, you were the sunshine he so desperately craved. Like his own personal star. âDo you remember the first time you ever came to med bay? The conversation we had?â
âI remember the big three,â you softly smiled at him, and he watched as you took another sip from your mug.
Leonard just needed a little bit more context, for his own peace, to make sure the both of you were on the same page, âThe big three?â
 âWe talked about how flat whites are your preferred drink of choice, we talked about âthe dealâ with me and Spock, and we talked about how you didnât believe in soulmates.â It almost seemed like you had a checklist to remember. Feeling quite pleased with himself that you seemed to be on the same page already.Â
âI never believed in having a soulmate. Not just for me, but for everyone. Iâve always thought it was crazy to love someone based on a mark weâve had since we were born.â Leonard finally took his first drink, appreciating the warm, velvety milk that soothed his groggy morning throat, âThe idea that you canât love someone just because you werenât chosen for them was always ridiculous to me. Iâve always wanted to reject the idea that someone should love me just because of a damn sign from the universe I had no say in.â
His gaze seemed more intense now, hoping you would know the gravity of the words he was trying to muster the courage to say. He was in this for the long haul, for the rest of his life. âThe night I came to check on you I saw it. In the photo of you and Jim.â
You smiled at him and Leonard took a shaky breath, âYour mark is the dendrites of a multipolar neuron,â He watched your face morph as you brought your wrist to your face, gently tracing the lines with your fingers. Leonard pulled his arm out of the black thermal he was wearing, and for the first time, he turned his arm, and just below the crease of his elbow, was the finishing piece of yours, âI got the terminals of the neuron,â
âThey look like plant roots,â You mused from your spot on the chair, now leaning over the arm of the chair to get a closer look, âEverything clicked that night,â Leonard stood, moving in front of you and bringing your wrist to the inside of his elbow, watching as your bodies and the image connected, âI ran away that night because I was scared. The thought of you being mine was almost too much to handle, then I saw the way you looked at me. No one had ever looked at me like that.â He was now holding your hand, watching as a slight blush consumed your cheeks. âYou still look at me like that. I love you (Y/N), and the only thing I ever want is to be yours.â
**************************************
You wanted to cry,you had been naked in front of Leonard before but now you felt like you had been stripped bare, you needed a break in this conversation. You could feel the heaviness in the air, making it hard to breathe. âPeople will say things about you Leonard. Itâs happened before.âÂ
âWhat? Theyâll think Iâm with you for the status?â Leonard puffed his chest playfully.
âNo, thatâs not what Iâm worried about.â You straightened yourself up, now on your knees as you locked eye contact with Leonard, âYouâre the CMO of the USS Enterprise, you donât need my status. No, what Iâm worried about is that youâre one of the youngest men Iâve dated, and thatâs still a 9 year age difference.â
âYoungest? I told Jim theyâd never let me speak at the Academy again.â
You couldnât help but laugh, pulling him in by the front of his shirt, âIâll have you know I am a grown adult Dr. McCoy. With a fully formed prefrontal cortex. I think Iâm perfectly capable of making my own decisions.â You were hovering in front of his lips when you saw a small smile make an appearance, a knock at the door pulled two two of you out of your reverie and you groaned. Pulling away from him and grumbling under your breath all the way to your door.
James was waiting, bouncing in place as he tried seeing into your room from his angle in the hallway. âDid Leonard give you his gift?â James bounced his eyebrows up and down at you.Â
âIf youâre talking about the potentially giant venus fly trap then, yes.â You crossed your arms over your chest.
âSo, itâs giant huh?â A smirk cracking his face as he watched yours morph.
âI meanâŠâ you paused, not knowing if Leonard wanted to tell people, before shrugging your shoulders as you fully faced James, measuring the air with your pointer fingers.
âAre you serious? Tell me youâre joking?â You slightly jumped as Leonard placed his hand on your shoulder.Â
âWhat are we joking about?â He yawned after he spoke and you knew it couldnât have been any earlier than 0700.Â
âJames doesnât believe you have a big dick.â You laughed as Leonard suddenly stood straighter and seemed to tense up, you turned toward him, pulling him down for a gentle kiss, âJames didnât believe that we actually told each other how we felt.â
âThank god you did because my next plan was to strand the two of you in a desert at night.âÂ
âGoodbye James,â you briefly waved before closing the door and pulling Leonard into your bedroom.
My best friend, Jim Kirk, whirled around at the sound of my voice, one eyebrow raised. He was incredibly used to me and my shenanigans, so he didn't even look phased as I charged towards him while he waited for the machine to fill his cup with caf.
"I need you to distract Bones for, like, half an hour. Preferably today. And within the next hour," I said, only slightly breathless as I reached him.
"So... you want me to go distract Bones as soon as I get my caf?"
"Pretty much, yeah."
Jim grinned at me. "You know I'm in. But care to tell me why?"
"I've got a Valentine's Day suprirse I want to put together for him. It's the first time we've been a couple for the holiday, and I want to do something special."
"And I take it you already have a plan?" I gave Jim a withering look and he just laughed. "Of course. You always have a plan."
"Damn right I do. Now come on, take that caf to go and get out of here. I've got things to do today."
"Alright, alright, I'm going. But next time you pull me away from a rare break to help you with something, it better be for a prank. Not a date."
I grinned. "I think I can commit to that deal."
Jim smirked back at me, then raised his cup of caf in mock salute as he strode out of the cafeteria, off to distract Bones. I paused, letting him get a little bit ahead of me so there was no chance of running into him or my boyfriend on their way out of medical, then quickly made my way through the familiar hallways of the Enterprise.
Luckily for me, when I made it to sickbay (after one brief stop in my quarters), it was almost completely empty. Jim must've been doing as I'd asked in getting Bones out of here, and now, I had exactly the window I needed to pull off my Valentine's Day surprise.
I made my way to one of the heart rate monitors and popped open the back panel, then got to work breaking it the way I wanted to break it. Althought Starfleet Engineering hadn't covered exactly this kind of change to equipment on a starship, it had been a thorough enough course that I had the skills regardless.
Once I finished, I tested my handiwork, then grinned and made everything look like it had before I'd showed up. Finally, I snuck the bouquet of fresh roses I'd managed to secure on our last shore leave out of my bag, tucking them behind the pillows of the bed. I paused to take one last look at my setup, then took off out of sickbay with a grin. Not a moment later, I heard Jim's voice echoing loudly down the corridor, clearly trying to give me a heads up about his return with Bones.
I hid around the corner while Bones and Jim said their goodbyes, then waited for Jim's footsteps to fade in the opposite direction before turning the corner and reentering sickbay.
"Hey," I said, a small smile on my face as I found Bones just outside his office. "Happy Valentine's Day."
He'd had a slight frown on his face when he'd first turned around, but it dissolved the moment he saw me.
"Hey yourself. Happy Valentine's Day." He took a few steps closer to me, a faint smile growing on his face as he approached. "What brings you in? I wasn't expecting to get to see you until tonight."
"Actually... I'm feeling a little rough. I was hoping you could check me out."
Bones narrowed his eyes. "...Is this a bad pickup line?"
"What? No!"
He held up his hands in surrender, then gently stepped forward and took my elbow.
"Alright. Valentine's Day and all, I had to check. Let's get you on a bed."
"And you're talking to me about bad pickup lines?"
Bones snorted, and I grinned. I didn't wait for him to direct me to a bed, and instead I headed straight for the one I'd just finished modifying. Bones didn't even bat an eye at my decision, instead following me over and carefully getting me hooked up to the various monitoring machines.
"Do you want to tell me about your symptoms?" he asked as he worked. I sighed.
"I don't know, I just haven't been feeling well. A little lighthearted, a little fluttering in my chest."
I expected Bones to make another bad pickup line comment, but clearly, he'd switched into doctor mode. He just hummed as he continued to work.
"And what's been your food and water to caffeine ratio so far today?"
I grunted. "Food, water, and no caffeine so far, thank you very much."
Bones just gave me a look, which I couldn't really argue. Too much caffeine and not enough other, better fuel had been the cause of me not feeling good before, and we both knew it.
"Well, let's see what we can see here, hm?"
I barely managed to fight back a giddy smile as Bones turned to look at the monitor read out, including the heart rate monitor. What he found, instead of the normally reading beeping line, was the green line tracing the shape of a (non-anatomical) heart. I snuck my hand behind my pillow to retrieve the roses while Bones blinked at the display in shock.
"My god... what is..." He glanced from the monitor to me, then got halfway through turning back to the monitor before stopping to stay on me and my roses. His wide eyes and slightly-open mouth were instantly replaced with a squint and a frown. "What did you do to this monitor?"
"I made it cute for Valentine's Day!" I replied. I held out the roses to him, but before I could get through another word, he'd crossed his arms and fixed me with a glare.
"I thought something was seriously wrong, either with you or with my highly-sophisticated medical equipment, which is essential to the health and safety of this crew. What if we'd had an emergency situaiton before you could fix this, or even tell me about it?"
I sighed.
"I hear you, baby, but come on. I made sure the odds of that were crazy low, it's one monitor, and I made the whole thing easy to fix."
"Easy enough that a non-engineer who didn't know the machine had been tampered with could fix it?"
"Yes."
Bones raised an eyebrow, so I sighed, and used my free hand to give the machine a nice hard whack. Theoretically, the same one a stressed and confused medical professional would give it in the heat of the moment.
It beeped, then the readout changed back to the normal, boring heart monitor readout. I turned back to Bones with a look.
He sighed. "Fine. But you still scared me when I saw that coming up as a readout of your heart beat."
"Just take the roses and get M'benga to cover the end of your shift. This is just the first Valentine's surprise of the day."
Despite himself, a smile clawed its way onto my boyfriend's face. I grinned back at him. I knew he couldn't hold out here much longer.
"Alright, fine," he said, taking the roses out of my hand and leaning in to give me a kiss. I leaned up and into it, bringing one hand up to rest at the nape of his neck. After a long, sweet moment, he pulled back. "I'm all yours until dinner tonight."
"What happens at dinner tonight?"
"Then it's my turn to take over with the Valentine's planning. I put together a nice dinner for the both of us, and as a bonus, it won't give either of us a heart attack."
