wip introduction: where the sun don’t set
genre: mystery, historical fiction, romance
status: plotting
pov: first person (jack a.k.a. the nosy journalist)
synopsis:
after making a name for himself back in atlanta, jack decides to try and make his bones up in new york city as a serious investigative journalist. but with each attempt leading to another locked door, jack decides to try his luck out on the streets, which takes him to bacchae, a popular night club, and it’s star attraction, valentina gomez, who in turn leads him to what could possibly be a career defining story. but will it be worth publishing?
excerpt:
“you want a story tiger?” valentina’s voice is a husky purr, low enough that i have to lean in to hear her better, which was probably her objective.
“you got one?”
she smiled, but her eyes were still empty glasses. “girls are turning up dead, at least once a week.”
it took me a few moments for me to realize what she had said. “what?”
she blinked, slow and languid, giving me the same look martha gives me when she’s waiting for me to feed her. “there was another one last night.” her eyes trailed over me, an assessment of sorts. “twenty eight girls in the last three months alone.”
“have you told the cops?”
this time, her smile does reach her eyes. but it’s a harsh smile, sardonic and cynical, the dark smile of a pessimist, and i almost flinched. “i did. but since when do cops care about sex workers?”

dear gods just imagine the stories of women in a dark academia setting.
women with squared off shoulders that strut down the hallways as if they have the whole world at their hands. women playing the male roles in the plays. women adjusting their jacket before storming off. women gently putting on red lipstick with a bloodied hand. women with hunched shoulders and dark eyes frantically reading a book, because they cant get enough of it. women with a secret just poised on their lips if the perfect arch. women with messy hair and disheveled looks stumbling into class. women seducing everyone around them with their raspy voices. women having everyone’s attention with their soft voices. women knowing how to handle blood. women knowing how the plan things perfectly. women reciting poetry over a fresh grave. women with their arms linked running across campus, their laughs rising above the quiet of the night. women tasting like strawberry wine and the faintest hint of whisky. women helping women when things go wrong. just women in the dark academia genre where they aren’t used as the lust interest in the room.
ya know like….you always hear about the classics™ authors having stupid wild shenanigans with each other. they all banded together to be dumbass chaotic english majors together. the stories are great and they’re all considered timeless genius writers….we don’t have that with modern age authors? where’s the goddamn sense of community? where’s the saucy tales of jk rowling, stephen king, james patterson and nicholas sparks locked up in an orgy cabin during a hurricane and having a writing contest. no one’s ever gotten in a fist fight with stephanie meyer. rick riordan didn’t cry face down in george r r martin’s garden after no one liked blood of olympus. jodi picoult doesn’t have a single damn calcified heart in her possession. cassandra clare and suzanne collins never had sex on a grave. neil gaiman has never gone on a week long sex-binge that would have killed him if r l stine didn’t intervene. john green has never written a book in two weeks while snorting massive amounts of cocaine. where’s the drama!!! where’s the scandal!!!! where’s the intrigue!!! modern day authors have to step it UP a notch, God dammit.
Romantic opium binges and fainting couches are all well and good but kids these days just don’t appreciate the late 19th century occultism aesthetic. Get some ceremonial robes, take up pipe-smoking and radical political views, wave some hyssop branches around and claim to have received revelation from mysterious higher beings. Transliterate your name into a Semitic language or sign all your letters with a mysterious Latin abbreviations; schism from your secret society to form a new, even more secret society! Paint a circle on your wealthy parent’s library floor and summon up spirits of indeterminate origin!
━━━━ send me your anonymous opinion of me and my wip’s in my ask!
hello hello hello~
what is up @collablr and the collablr community!!! my name is cody, im 21, my pronouns are they/them and i am ready to party!!!
here on my blog i will be focussing on the following wips:
Two’s Company-fake married trope with a widowed furniture restorer and gruff boxing coach who witness a mafia hit (dun dun dun!!!!)
Autonomy-romance novel set in steampunk gilded age NOLA between an automaton engineer and the daughter of a toymaker
Unnamed WIP-high fantasy romance novel where a girl from a farming village is given to a farming god to appease him
more wips will no doubt come up and i will make posts for them!
the major themes of my works tend to be love (romantic, familial, platonic, community, etc.), community, family (found and biological), friendship, religion, growth/coming-of-age, magic, individuality, war, colonialism, imperialism, and above all else, compassion.
i would love to explore dark academia, gillian flynn-esque women, and megan abbott-esque teenage girls
writing wise, i love fitzgerald, donna tartt, gillian flynn, megan abbott, rumi, pablo neruda, sylvia plath, and the romantics (love those dramatic ass kids). my ultimate goal is to write something as captivating, touching, and heartfelt as the avatar series (i fucking love atla and lok).
while i will of course post things about my writing and threads, there will also be resource/reference posts to help me and hopefully other collablrs!!
if anything needs to be added to this post or my blog or if any of u have any questions
