Shakespeare Review Corner:
Rating System: arrow ("yuck") < swirly ("again if forced") < star ("seek on occasion") < heart ("seek often"); plus and minus modifiers apply to all four
Romeo and Juliet: mediocre. my first exposure to the story was when i was in 6th grade and my friends' school put on a "Seussified" version of the play. i was already vaguely familiar with the plot, but this version of the story made it seem really funny and interesting. i then first read it in 7th grade, willingly, since i was so ahead in English class my teacher let me do whatever and i knew that this story was super famous. the textbook it was in defined every third word so i was able to mostly understand it. i don't remember having any more strong feelings about the story. since then i read it for class freshman year of high school. we read the original text with no translation but we were all honors students. this was when i realized just how incompetent and straight up stupid basically all of the characters are. in addition, at the end of the unit we watched the 1968 film, which despite apparently being PG includes a bedroom scene that as a young ace in a high school freshman English class seemed entirely unnecessary. overall, plot is a solid swirly, and the experiences over time have ranged from star to arrow plus. do not need to read again. final rating: swirly minus (🌕🌘🌑🌑🌑)
Twelfth Night: fairly good. freshman year my high school decided to do this play for our winter performance. i went into it knowing nothing about the story nor the technology i was to use to light the stage. the main twist was that the director decided to make the entire thing take place in the 1980s, but i will elaborate later. the script that we were given was the "No Fear Shakespeare" version. being the overachiever that i am i read the entire thing in one night. well, the modern text at least. i never fully read the original text since the director made a bunch of cuts. he decided that despite being 1980s we would still recite the original text. at least i got to learn how to operate a disco ball. anyway, the story itself is pretty confusing upon first read, but it certainly serves its role as a comedy. my only qualm is that Malvolio makes me a bit uncomfortable, but the actor that was cast in the role did do an incredible job, and by closing night i had definitely warmed up to the play in general. characters are a star plus, plot is star minus but maybe plain star since it was my personality for a month or so. probably wouldn't want to read again after reading it five million times in preparation of opening night, but would definitely be open to watching it and mansplaining the plot afterwards. final rating: star plus (🌕🌕🌕🌖🌑)
Julius Caesar: it's fine. i read this sophomore year of high school. i was the only person in my class who liked reading out loud so i was brutus half the time, which would've been fine except i don't really like him as a character. there's so many characters and half their names sound the same and a bunch of them don't turn out relevant. everyone except the bad guys just straight up dies in the end. the plot kinda seemed all over the place. we watched the 1953 movie which was not in color and they skipped lines all the time and the fifth act was incredibly out of order, which really brings down my appreciation of the plot. i feel like if i saw a staged version i'd be more interested. overall, i feel like i just don't really have any strong feelings one way or the other for this play. plot of the play itself is a star minus but in combination with the movie it's basically a swirly. characters are a swirly plus at best. might read again without the movie, but not likely. final rating: swirly plus (🌕🌕🌘🌑🌑)

super secret bonus!
The Prince: this is actually a play by Abigail Thorn, but it is based off of Shakespeare's works. i've only seen it once but i've been meaning to see it again and i'll probably update this when i do. a recording of it is on my favorite streaming service Nebula, which is how i watched it. the main plays it is based off of i have not read, so the plot was a bit hard for me to follow at times, but the premise is hilarious and i think it is a wonderful work of art. i will have a more serious review when i actually get around to watching it again. i don't have specific ratings for the details, but as i've mentioned i'm definitely going to watch it again and i think you should too. final rating: heart minus (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌘)
other super secret bonus!
Something Rotten!: this musical makes fun of Shakespeare for plagiarizing everyone. even better, Shakespeare is Christian Borle with a british accent. i've watched a slime tutorial and i'm very glad i did. the soundtrack is high quality. it's hilarious from beginning to end. i've auditioned for pit and tech and have no regrets. i will update this on whether i make it in or not. at the time of writing i haven't read Hamlet so a lot of the Shakespeare stuff went over my head, but i appreciated the Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night references. there's also references to, like, every major musical that had been made by the time this was written, so that's also great. some of the comedy is so overboard it gets a bit stupid, and also for some reason i can not place i don't really like Nigel, but those are small complaints to the overall amazing piece of literary work that is this musical. characters are a solid heart overall and plot is a heart plus. highly recommend to everyone reading this. final rating: heart plus (🌕🌕🌕🌕🌖)
