Luminescent Spectacle | Loki and June Moone
mischief-and-tricksĀ·:
āOther problems?ā Loki questioned. He knew of several, if he was honest, merely from being observant or taking any sort of interest in the world around him. But he did wonder which she referenced specifically. Itād be telling about where their priorities might beāor at least where they wanted them to seem to be.
āI was happy to do something so simple. After my visits to Midgard, Iāve gotten quite adept at using and manipulating even your most primitive technology. On Asgard, things are able to be operated at a molecular level. But our words for such things are usually more mystical. The principle is the same, though.ā That much he had worked out from cursory research and merely listening to the worlds of others. People like Banner, when he wasnāt a massive green ape.
June smiled, but the effect remained enigmatic. She had existed just as long as most of the gods and goddesses, yet she had never been able to understand Loki, much to her chagrin, and that kept her guarded. If she gave away too much then she risked the possibility of being recognized.Ā
āIt sounds fascinating. Perhaps our world could learn from yours, even with its primitive technology,ā she teased, her eyes dancing. It was important to bring out more aspects of June for moments like this, when her use of emotion was more pronounced. June had a sincerity that she would never be able to mimic; fortunately for her, she could manipulate it to her own will.Ā
themagicwcrdĀ·:
āIt is,ā She greatly regretted not seeing more of them, sheād have to watch a few on youtube later, probably with a large glass of wine and a tub of ice cream beside her.
āWell i heard you and him had been practicing magic together,ā He had mentioned that the night he died, her story seemed to have a few cracks and Zatanna internally felt a little smug catching her in it.Ā āAnd from what he mentioned it sounded like you two did that a lot,ā
Juneās smile faded, though her expression registered nothing but wariness and concern that Zatanna would admit to such knowledge aloud.Ā āIf he has told you, that must mean you are trustworthy enough to keep such things to yourself.ā She sighed. āAfter all, the use of real magic is illegal. I do hope you understand, given your estrangement from Zach, why I would not be open with such information.ā If the wife of the mayor was known to be practicing illegal activity, it would land them all in very hot water. Such things were easy to get around in so-called magic shows, where tricks could be explained by elaborate skills in sleight of hand.
Smiling, she took another sip of her water.Ā āHow nice to know we wonāt have any secrets between us.ā

āGood.ā he nodded, āThatās good.ā She needed to be healthy since he used her in shows, of course Zach knew he loved her⦠But the logic behind the thought with no emotion following made it a difficult notion to hover on. He couldnāt even bring himself to think on why that should be concerning, it was odd to say the least. āThatās good too.ā he said with a nod, āWell, better than that, sorry I just⦠I donāt know.ā he cleared his throat, āI canāt feel anything.ā he looked at June, appearing totally calm, āNothing at all.ā
āI know,ā June murmured, lifting a hand so that her palm gently pressed his cheek.Ā āIt is still new. Everything is still new. It will take time to adjust to this. It took me some time, darling - even me.ā To anyone on the outside, she cared purely and deeply for those around her. It was only partially true. However, it was also much more true than she wanted to admit.Ā āDo not think on it now. All right? It isnāt important.āĀ
headsyouliveĀ·:
He lifted one hand and brushed her hair back, tucking it behind her ear. Both of them spent a good deal of their lives focused on the goals they shared, on what they wanted to build, and he too rarely looked at her and saw his June, much like he no longer looked in a mirror and saw only himself. The burst of emotion sheād shown for Zach made him look.
āHe will. Heās always been eager to do as we ask of him.ā And shouldnāt that be even more true when he owed his very life to June?
āI know.ā June frowned, her eyebrows drawing together.Ā āHe will be different.ā That was something she was prepared for. Death changed everyone, it was inevitable, no matter how they lived.Ā āWe must watch him carefully.ā The way he interacted with the public could jeopardize the standing they had within their community. As much as she cared for him, she knew neither of them could allow that to happen; it would send everything theyād built into ruin.
commissionerjgĀ·:
His brows furrowed and for a moment he just bowed his head. āYou and I donāt know each other very well, Mrs. Dent, but Harvey and I go back. I canāt think of a man whoād be less at fault for something like this. What happened wasnāt your fault. Sometimesā¦ā he sighed, āsometimes people slip through our fingers.ā
In his long tenure with the GCPD, Jim had been unfortunate enough to see many awful things. Some stuck with him. There were names heād never forget. Names of people he felt like had died because he hadnāt done enough, wasnāt good enough or fast enough. Nothing anyone ever said would make him forget those names. He didnāt expect anything he said to do it for June, either.
āNot mine.ā The words were out of her mouth before June could stop them. She didnāt like this, this emotion, which made it difficult to maintain her human facade. She had been convinced that her handle on Juneās emotions were ironclad. This situation was quickly proving her wrong. Clenching her teeth, she forced herself to relax and put on an apologetic expression.Ā āIām sorry,ā she said again, her fingers twining through a limp piece of hair before she tucked it back, out of her face, and focused on what she intended to do.Ā
themagicwcrdĀ·:
Zatanna took one sip, nothing seemed off about it though it would rather strange if it did, and also make no sense. Maybe she had become a little paranoid, she took another sip trying to not think about that possibility too hard.Ā āAh i see, his shows were very good, i didnāt get the most chances to see them but iām glad for the ones i did catch,ā An innocent enough answer from June she supposed.
āSo when did you start mentoring him?ā The question was more why but that would sound more accusatory than she wanted to be for the moment.
āOh, that is quite a shame.ā June also took a small sip of her water, but then she set it aside. Zach had told her everything about Zatanna and the conflicted past they shared. It was part of why heād been so vulnerable when theyād first taken him in.Ā
The tone seemed to take her by surprise. She sat up a little straighter and smiled, her hands folding in her lap.Ā āI believe he views Harvey as more of a mentor. He looks up to him. I try to be their support.ā

mischief-and-tricksĀ·:
Loki has his own opinions about whether or not Dent had meant his gratitude sincerely, but he hadnāt really cared all that much, if he was honest. Heād gotten his recognition through his own means. He didnāt need it from Dent.Ā āHe said Star City would be grateful,ā Loki replied. As a wordsmith, he knew that it hadnāt been a glowing thank you from Dent himself, but he was fine with it.Ā āI was simply happy to assist.ā
Gods and goddesses were not Juneās favorite people to interact with. Their powers were too great. It was too risky. Even if they were no threat to her, she knew they could not be underestimated.Ā āThey were much more than simply grateful,ā she said directly.Ā āThey were ecstatic. It might seem insignificant, compared to the other problems our city faces, but you gave them back what little comfort they still have.ā

āThatās not my place to say, maāam.ā If her tone bothered him, it didnāt show. Grief did all kinds of things to people and heād seen the whole gauntlet. It wasnāt his place to judge her for hers. A young man had died. Anger seemed more than fair.
As she apologized, he shook his head. āDonāt think anything of it. If I took it to heart every time someone raised their voice or said something I didnāt like, I wouldāve quit thirty years ago.ā
It was important to remember two things: everything she did and said reflected on her image. June knew that well enough. However, it was just as important to show that she was human. Flaws were important. Excusable flaws were the best sort.Ā
She smiled faintly and reached up to brush away a tear before it could make it to her cheek.Ā āMy husband and I... we donāt have any children. He is like a son to us, and we...ā Pausing, she cleared her throat.Ā āWe couldnāt protect him.ā

mischief-and-tricksĀ·:
āLovely to meet you.ā She was certainly more personable than Harvey. He looked at her hand, considering whether to feign ignorance before deciding against it and slipping his long fingers around hers.Ā
He nodded.Ā āWell⦠man is fluid. But I am Loki. Your husband was very⦠pointed.ā A little bit rude, overly intimidating, and presumptuous. But he didnātĀ say that just yet.
June couldnāt help a soft chuckle.Ā āHe can be. There is a lot on his mind these days. Iām sure you understand.ā Zach might beĀ ābackā now, but the entire situation was certainly enough to put even the most charming man on edge.Ā Not that it mattered. She had a way of smoothing over any rough edges. āI apologize if his demeanor was... brusque. I do hope he was able to articulate his gratitude. He would have meant it sincerely.āĀ
mostpopularmagiĀ·:
āA monthā¦ā He processed that, appearing too calm and feeling too calm and knowing he shouldnāt be so calm yet unable to scourge up the emotion to worry⦠bizarre. āMy dove⦠Eddie should have looked after her.ā he blinked slowly and looked over at June, the movement sluggish, āYou⦠missed me?ā he asked, knowing the question was stupid but unable to not ask, even in this emotionless state. Ā
āShe has been well taken care of, sweetheart,ā June assured, covering his hand with her own. She recognized what he was feeling. It was something sheād experienced herself, before Juneās emotions had slowly risen to the surface and sheād been forced to reconcile them with her own state. It would take time for him to feel more normal.Ā āI missed you more than I can express. It hasnāt been the same without you. Harvey... he is going to be so happy to see you again.ā
themagicwcrdĀ·:
She stepped into the house without a word, taking a peek around her surroundings, she doubted there would be anything out of place in the townhouse but still was a good idea to keep alert.Ā
She took her seat at the end of the couch closest to the door in case an exit had to be made quickly.Ā āSure iād love something to drink, feel free to surprise me iām not picky,ā She kept her face neutral and waited to be handed a glass, she didnāt really care what as she had no plans to drink it. She leaned forward,Ā āSo i am wondering a few thing and was hoping you could enlighten me to the answers, and the first of those things is what caught your attention to Zach in the first place?ā
āOh... well...ā June paused, but then settled on a clean bottle of sparkling water. It was too early for wine. And she also made a habit never to drink during social functions - there was nothing tackier than a glass of wine in someoneās hand when their picture was taken. Of course, if a man were holding it, people would simply call it distinguished.Ā
Appearing surprised, she sat opposite of Zatanna and crossed her legs at the ankle. She laughed.Ā āHis charm, of course. I saw one of his performances. I thought he was very talented, and he was so good at connecting with his audience.āĀ
headsyouliveĀ·:
āTheyāll believe as we tell them,ā he agreed. Harvey watched her closely for a few moments before going to her again. He closed his hands around her arms. āIf this is what you want, the city will fall in line with it.ā
It was one thing they could control. She could bring Zach back to them. Harvey could play it off as the return of a savior - one they were so close to he was practically a surrogate son. They would be so lucky to have him back. A void filled.
If the city didnāt fall in line with Juneās wishes, then she had her own way of making sure they would. Although she was doing her best to not use too much magic, risking suspicion, she also knew it couldnāt always be avoided.Ā
Nodding, she turned to face him.Ā āThey have all but forgotten that I was once in the same position. He only needs to tread carefully.ā It had taken her weeks to prove that she wasnāt some hostile spirit reanimating Juneās corpse.

Everything felt stiff, like heād spent too long in bed and exercised too much all at once, the fatigue had him all but collapsing into a chair the moment June got home. His head drooped but he forced it to rise and looked at her, taking deep breaths through an open mouth, as if unused to the gesture.Ā
āH-how long?ā he asked after a moment,Ā āI swear it feels like only a secondā¦ā
āNot very long.ā June took a seat next to his chair, reaching over to cover Zachās hand with her own.Ā āNot long at all. One month, perhaps, and it was the longest month I have ever known. I wanted to bring you back sooner, but everything had to be perfect.āĀ
themagicwcrdĀ·:
@enchant-the-moone
A question had come to mind, actually many, where did he get access to information on that type of magic, when did he get the confidence to do that, and where did the malice against someone or some group to even think about doing that spell let aloneĀ actually doing it, he meant for that effect to happen, just not the whole city, and there had to be a source for all of that, and the one place she could think of would be June Dent.
She would look into it more privately as well but perhaps a talk was in order, she dressed in her old blue coat and threw the hat on as she left her home, she was dressed for business, superheroĀ business. Her knocks on the door were firm, *thud thud thud* she face conveyed no emotion other than focus.Ā
āJune i believe we need to have a chat, this might be a long one,āĀ
When June opened the door, she seemed nothing but surprised to see Zatanna there. The words were met with a blank stare, but then she nodded and stepped back, gesturing for her to come inside.Ā āI imagine there is much we have to discuss.āĀ
Their townhome was light and airy. June let Zatanna to the sitting room and gestured for her to take a seat.Ā āWould you like something to drink, Zatanna?ā She asked politely.Ā āI hope you arenāt like Zach and only drink soda.ā Zach talked about his cousin often, but there was clearly tension existing between them. When it came down to it, she saw little to fear in Zatanna - but that didnāt mean she would underestimate her.Ā
