The Silky Jelly - Escape Artist Extraordinaire

MBARI was right to deem this tricky little minx the deep sea escape artist. The silky jelly, sp. Colobonema sericeum, is one of the fastest swimming jellyfish species. It uses speed, jet propulsion, flashing lights, and other tricks as defense and to avoid being eaten. They will even detach and leave behind some stinging tentacles as diversion when swimming away from danger. Clever girl

In my town we have a few of these trees growing spread around town, but they only bloom for two days a year. They bloomed yesterday so on my way home from getting Crunchwrap I took the opportunity for a photoshoot :) Now she’s settling in for a week, I already love her so much!
