Hand Lettering Basic Tools #1

Typography Lovers are a great source of inspiration but from now on I will share with you some really good training tips and the best materials to use in a special series of articles.
You’re excited about learn lettering, and now you’re interested in the tools! No more wait. Let’s start with the basic materials.
You don’t need to use any special paper to start. You can use the regular 20lb printer paper, it works well and it’s cheap.

The best tools for sketching are ones that you feel comfortable with and don’t hinder your creativity. I enjoy using a lead holder with 2H lead for guides and initial outlines and HB for filling in final sketches. There are countless brands to choose from, but some are much more accessible than others. Personally, I’m a big fan of Staedtler products.

Also, Staedtler Lead Pointer will be veryyyy useful.

Many artists of the hand lettering world seem to favour Microns. It’s a good choice and the set price it’s really worth it. The tips are firm and don’t bend easily. I recommend a few different sizes.

My number one brush pen! As opposed to brush pens, the Color Brush has an actual synthetic-bristle brush tip, fed with ink from the body of the brush. And it last forever! Ok, just some months of regular use.

Note that this is just a starter kit. There are many tools and in this short article I only recommend some of them, that worked perfectly for me and for other artists.
