I was very sad to hear about the sudden death of Stella Tennant (pictured on the left.) In the 1990’s I lived in Austin and worked in a hair salon with my friend Susan (pictured on the right,) Stella was on the covers of all the fashion magazines at the time and people used to say that Susan resembled Stella. We both thought Stella was super cool and loved how she had short dark hair like we did. My friend Susan & I lived together for a brief time in NYC where I worked at a pharmacy in the West Village. Stella lived in that neighborhood at the same time and was a regular customer at the pharmacy. She was always very nice and even said hello to me when I saw her out of context at the post office once. My friend Susan died suddenly about a year later. Since then whenever I saw a photo of Stella it reminded me of my dear friend Susan. Now they are both gone and all I have are memories.

Bill Cunningham on the street during Fall Fashion Week 2014.

The fashion world will never be the same. As a photographer who loves fashion but not so much the fashion industry, Bill Cunningham was a huge inspiration to me. He had no ego, he didn’t need to try get attention he just did. I remember taking photos of mannequins in the store windows on 57th street one cold, overcast winter afternoon about two years ago. I spotted Bill a few feet away from me doing the exact same thing! It’s exciting and intimidating when you see someone you really admire up close and personal. I wish I would have had the courage to say something but all i could do was make eye contact and smile. Either way it was a moment we shared. Two people who love fashion, photography and New York City taking the time to document it. RIP Bill Cunningham, you will be missed.
