“Putting yourself out there takes vulnerability. Vulnerability is hard, and we, as a rule, tend to go for what’s easy; by that logic, closing ourselves off is the easiest thing in the world. We quote the words of others to do the talking for us, send each other links to articles and stories in lieu of actual conversation, post pretty pictures to adequately convey our current state of mind, all to avoid having to proffer a single identifiable human emotion. Maybe just maybe…divulging your vulnerabilities without any kind of filter can make you more human.”

Tutorial: Texturing Clothes Part 2 (The Multiplier)
This is part two of the tutorial on putting textures on clothes. This tutorial starts with a multiplier that has been smoothed and has the correct shade of grey (137,137,137 in the lightest areas; you can achieve this by Image > Adjustments > Hue/ Saturation and fiddling with the “lightness” slider). This tutorial is divided into A: A full texture and B: An overlay texture like dots or so.
1) Go to Image > Image Size and write in 4096 for both width and height:
2) Use the magic wand and select anywhere that is not on your clothing, then go to Select > Inverse; you should see a selection around your multiplier pieces.
3) Go to Select > Modify > Border and write in 5 pixels. Then Select > Modify > Feather and write in 3 pixels. You can fiddle with these values however you want.
4) Keeping the active selection, create a new layer, pick a dark grey and using the paintbrush color in the selected area. You can go over it however many times you want, it will give it a darker outline which looks way better on clothes. IF YOU DO NOT MAKE THE OUTLINE ITS OWN LAYER YOU WILL HAVE ISSUES LATER.
Part A: Using a full texture
1) Open your texture you wish to use, select it and copy it over to your multiplier PSD. The texture must either be seamless, or big enough to cover the areas you need it to (See Part 1 of this tutorial). It should paste as its own layer.
2) Move the texture to overlay the part of the multiplier you want it to, then keep pasting and moving copies until it covers everything it needs to. I usually create a document with my textures already duplicated many times and placed next to each other so that I have a document with a huge seamless version, so I can avoid having to paste multiple times.
3) Merge all the layers of your texture into 1 (highlight all the layers and right-click > Merge Layers. Go to your first layer, click the magic wand again and select anywhere in the free area, it should show you an outline of your multiplier:
4) Go to your texture layer and click “delete” on your keyboard. It should delete all excess texture.
5) Under Layers, choose “Overlay” from the drop-down menu where is says “Normal”. You can change the opacity of this layer however you want.
6) you need to again go to Image > Adjustments > Hue /Saturation and fiddle with the “lightness” slider till your overlay has kinda the same shade of grey as your original multiplier.
7) If I want multiple different textures, I will just make multiple layers in the same PSD file. Make sure when you export as a DDS you reduce your image size to 2048!!!
Part B: Overlaying a pattern
1) I also like to overlay patterns, such as dots, or use downloaded brushes to create something new. As you can see here, I have my spotted pattern. Important is, the dots are on a clear background! To do this, I went to Select > Color Range and clicked on the background color and then deleted it.
2) To put this on your multiplier you follow exactly the same steps as part A. (I left the dots lighter in the image so you can see them, but they should have the same grey so actually fade into the background).
3) The other possibility is to draw your own pattern. I have download a lot of custom brushes. Just make a new layer and start drawing. Afterwards follow the steps from part A again to make it an overlay that only covers your multiplier. I have again left them a bit lighter in the pic so you can see them.
Again: remember to reduce your image size to 2048 before exporting! By selecting what layers are visible, you can export any combination of textures and pattern overlays :D
Tutorial: Texturing Clothes Part 3 (The UV Map)
This is the last part of this tutorial. It will show you how to make your patterns recolorable. You should have a PSD file with multiple layers in it now :) Save this PSD again under a different name (like UV).
1) Delete the layer that has the dark outline of your UV:
2) Create a new layer above the layer with your original Multiplier and fill entirely with red (ff0000).
3) You can pick a second recolorable area if you wish, here I want to have the sleeves and the top part of my shirt. Go to your multiplier layer, click the Magic Wand anywhere in the empty space and go to Select > Inverse.
4) Create a new layer while keeping the selection and move this layer to above the red one. Using the paintbrush, color the areas you want to be the second color with violet (ff00ff).
5) create a new blank document any size and fill it with yellow (ffff00).
6) Go back to your PSD and go to the layer with your pattern on it. Change it back from “Overlay” to “Normal”. Go to Image > Adjustment > Match Color.
7) Under “Source” pick your newly created yellow image and under “Layer” pick the name of the layer that is yellow (usually background). You can fiddle with the sliders too if it helps you get a nice yellow.
8) Most of the time this works, but sometimes instead of becoming yellow my pattern is black. Cancel it.
9) Go to Image > Adjustments > Color Balance and fiddle with the sliders until your pattern has a slight color. In my case it looks slightly purple.
10) Now repeat step 7. It should work now :)
11) Now by hiding and viewing layers you can export your UV. Again: Make sure you have reduced the image size to 2048 or 1024!!
This concludes this tutorial. You should now be able to import these files into TSRW and have clothing with a texture and a recolorable pattern!
