James paused in his school work, hearing the words penetrate, causing him to blink for a moment. Turning his head he looked over at his best friend, taking off his glasses to bide him time before replying to him, rubbing his eyes as he did so.

“Is it really hiding if you are just trying to survive?” he looked over Sirius’ face for a moment, maybe a moment longer than he should have, but he just didn’t know how to respond, and god that was the worse part. “Padfoot,” he started, “Whatever it is, whatever you want to do, of course I will back you up, but please at least think it through. Especially when it comes to your safety. I can live without a lot of things, a lot of people, but you are not one of them. Remember that.”

Nodding as his words, James put down his book and crossed the dormitory to his best friend, wrapping him into a hug, holding him as close as possible as he did so. It was his way of always making sure Sirius knew that he had someone in his corner, that he always did.

random hc ;   james became quidditch captain in his fifth year, pretty abruptly because their captain left school. so he was captain for a few matches until the end of the season, then for his entire sixth and seventh year. it wasn’t really something he was expecting because it was so sudden but it WAS something he took a shine to and gryffindor ended up winning the quidditch cup in his sixth year. his time as quidditch captain played a bit of a role in him getting head boy despite never being a prefect
