Joe Soave (Marketing â20) got the to opportunity to participate in the 2017 New York Retail Connect this past winter break that was put on by MSU Lear Corporation Career Services Center.Â
The trip was a 6-day experience of traveling, learning, and networking designed for MSU students interested in a career in retail, fashion, and luxury brand industries. Some of the companies he visited included: Hugo Boss, Macy's Inc., Yummie by Heather Thomson, Ermenegildo Zegna, Brooks Brothers, Michael Kors, NEST Fragrances, Laura Geller Beauty, Marc Jacobs, and John Varvatos.
We asked some questions to get a closer look on Joeâs experience in the Big Apple!
Q: What was your favorite company that you met with there and why?
A:Â My favorite company was Brooks Brothers. We had the opportunity to visit the factory where they make their ties, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for their company and its products. The fact that almost every part of the process is done by hand shocked me, and it was incredible to see it up close.
Q: How did this trip change/enlighten your perspective in regards to the retail industry?Â
A:Â This trip completely changed my perspective. Seeing all the work that goes into even the smallest things changed how I viewed the industry. I loved being able to see what happens behind the scenes and how companies work in the industry.
A:The most delicious thing I got to eat was pizza from a place called Ninoâs 46. Itâs an extremely small Italian restaurant close to Times Square, and the pizza was absolutely insane. Iâm definitely going back the next time Iâm in New York.
Q: The best part of the trip?
A: Personally, the best part of the trip was exploring the city. Since it was my first time in NYC, and I was lucky enough to be given a large chunk of free time, I took full advantage of it. The Empire State Building was unbelievable and experiencing the 9/11 memorial was something I canât describe in words. Definitely one of the things Iâll never forget about the trip.Â
Thanks for sharing with us, Joe!
