Vyn's morning started with a roar.
Not that that was so unusual, mind you. Living in the shadow of the Citadel, one became accustomed to arcane experiments being flung from the towering structure above only to crash down on the hapless denizens below. Loud noises and commotion at any hour of the night or day was normal. Sleep was precious.
Another roar — and this time the building shook, the ceiling shuddered, the lone window in the tenement rattling. A smattering of plaster dust and debris cascading down. Something BIG was moving around out there. An enormous beast, some collosal machine, an errant spell gone awry?
Whatever the origins of the roar, it wasn't IN the tenement, and Vyn had slept through worse. He rolled over to go back to sleep.
Vyn was just drifting off when he heard another unwelcome sound. The startling thud thud thud of someone pounding at his door.
Vyn rolled over to look at the door, wondering why the wards hadn't kicked in— only to remember he had been so mana starved after his last gig he hadn't been able to muster the energy. Stupid.
Someone pounded on the door again. Then a middle aged voice he loathed to hear— "Hey!! Spell junkie!! Got a job for you!!"
Vyn groaned, kicked off the blanket, and made his way towards the door of his one room dwelling. He deftly unlocked the deadbolt, then opened the door just enough to look out.
A short, middle aged woman with greying hair stood firmly on the landing — Mrs Chen, the landlord. A real bloodsucker, Vyn thought to himself humorously. Her fangs gleamed in the early morning light. Mrs Chen was a vampire - and the landlord who owned the hovel Vyn called home. Vyn would have loved to slam the door in her face. But that would only lead to more trouble for him.
"What do you want, Mrs Chen?" Vyn asked tiredly, rubbing his eyes at the bright morning sun. He had his suspicions, but he wasn't going to make it easy for her.
"I need you deal with THAT," as she pointed. Vyn opened the door a little wider to look, and quickly spotted the cause of the early morning disturbance - a cloud of dust being kicked up out in the Wastes, obscuring whatever it was. Another roar. Something was making it's way through the wastes that surrounded the Citadel - and on a path that looks ike it would cross with the apartment and surrounding structures.
"I have new tenant coming by - real fancy school type. Can't have them scared off by whatever that thing is," Mrs Chen said. "You deal with it, you get discount on this months rent. We have a deal?"
"I get paid in coin, or I don't do the job," Vyn replied.
"Fine." Mrs Chen looked annoyed but not surprised. She shrugged. "Was worth a shot."
Vyn gave a wry smile and shook his head as he shut the door. He threw on a hooded garment, then his vest over that. He checked his energies and spells, then he headed out the door. Mrs Chen was still standing expectantly outside his door. Vyn did his best to ignore her as he headed down the stairs, making his was past the ramshackle buildings, and strode into the wastes.
