Lie for Me Chapter 3 - A New Deal
Steve Harrington x Reader
Word Count: 1,121
Warnings: Small section of parental abuse! Please don't read if physical abuse triggers you, lovelies. Other than that, nothing really that I can think of.
Today is the day. You just have to make it through one more day of fake-dating Steve Harrington, then tonight, it all goes away and you guys “break up.” It’s not like you’re looking forward to this, per se, but it’ll be nice to not have to put up an act in front of Dustin anymore and just get to be yourself free of any stipulations. This way, you’ll be able to build a friendship with Steve that isn’t based on a weird fake-relationship. Besides, you’re glad that it never got to a point where the two of you had to show any fake affection. It’s good that it’s ending before it’s really beginning. Who knows what could have happened.
“(Y/n)- we can’t breakup.” Steve pants, having just run up to you from who knows where.
“What do you mean?” You ask, brows furrowing in confusion.
“I mean we can’t breakup yet. I need your help.”
~Yesterday Night~
Steve had just sat down with Dustin for a family dinner with his parents. Steve had been complaining all day to Dustin, and the boy had insisted that he didn’t go to it alone since his father has a certain way of turning the conversation on him, and he may not try to do that with a guest around.
Dustin was wrong.
“I just don’t understand why you’re alone and at work all the time, Steve. When I was your age, I was--”
“A jerk.” Steve finishes his father’s sentence for him, angrily biting at the meat on his plate. Dustin shrinks back into his chair at the fight going on before him, and sees Steve’s mom do the same.
“I was confident, handsome, young, and making my life worth living. Honestly, son, you don’t even have a girlfriend. What would some girl want with a low-life loser like you? You’re not even going to college.”
“Maybe I don’t want a girlfriend right now, ever thought of that, dad?” Steve lets his fork clang loudly onto the plate as he matches his father’s glare, not backing down this time.
“You cannot speak to your father that way. I am the head of this household and if you dare use that tone against me again then there will be consequences.” Mr. Harrington threatens lowly.
“Oh, consequences? Please, tell me a worse consequence than living with you--”
Steve’s father rears back his hand and right as he’s about to slap it across Steve’s face, Dustin pipes up.
“Steve has a girlfriend!”
Mr. Harrington pauses, hand still mid-air, as he processes this information.
“A girlfriend? And you didn’t think to mention her?”
Steve glares at Dustin, turning back to face his father.
“I didn’t want to bring her into this.”
“Into what?”
“This. Our argument. I don’t know, I just didn’t want her to have to meet you anytime soon.”
Smack.
A red mark glows brightly on Steve cheek, and he winces at the lingering sting of his father’s hand.
“That’s for lying to me and for thinking you’re clever. You may think you’re protecting your girlfriend because you think I’m some monster, but you’re going to have to get over that wimpy mindset, son. I want to meet this girl.”
“But, honey, we’re going out of town soon and--” Steve’s mom tries to spare him, but his father isn’t having any of it.
“The family reunion. At the end of the summer. She’ll be there, understand?” Steve’s father asks. Steve doesn’t say a word, just nods numbly.
“Good. Now get out of my house.”
Steve doesn’t hesitate. He grabs Dustin and practically runs to the door, not waiting for anyone else to utter a single word. All that’s on his mind is you and how he needs to talk to you now.
~Present day~
Steve had omitted the part where his father had slapped him. He didn’t want you thinking any less of him, and he certainly didn’t want you to go into meeting his father with a terrible impression of him. He knows you wouldn’t be able to let it slide and you’d probably end up getting mad at his dad, and that was the last thing he needed when his parents were meeting you.
“So you’re saying we have to date until the end of the summer?” You ask Steve, still in shock at the turn of events.
“Yes. Just until after the family reunion, then you can go back to pretending I never existed, I promise,” Steve mutters breathlessly. You run through the scenario in your head, mentally sighing.
“Okay. Through the end of the summer. I’ll try my best, Harrington.” You extend your hand to shake. He takes it gratefully and gives you a small smile that you can’t help but feel concerned at.
“Thank you, (Y/n), you’re a lifesaver. You really don’t know how much this means to me.”
“I think I can begin to guess.”
But the truth is, you couldn’t. Not yet, anyway. Not before you’d met his parents. But you’d find out the truth soon, anyway.
“By the way, what happened to your face? Your cheek looks red.” You point out, reaching up to inspect it. Steve pulls away from you and grins.
“Oh, you know. Just blushing because I’ve got myself a girlfriend for three whole months now.
“Lies, Harrington. You’d never blush at me.”
“Who says so?”
“The fact that we’re not actually dating. Don’t be dense.”
“Ouch. Using the fact that I’m not going to college against me, huh?”
“Hey, you said it. Not me.” You tease him, but fall somber afterward again at his expression.
“I’m sorry for dragging you into this, I really tried to--”
“Hey, it’s okay, Steve. I’m not as put out as you think I am. Did I intend for this to happen over the summer? Obviously not, but it’s okay. It’s not like I’m trying to date anyone else, so you’re not exactly ruining my shot or anything. Don’t worry so much about it, okay? It’ll stress you out, and then you’ll lose your beautiful hair. That’s all you have going for you at this point, so you can’t lose that, alright?” You try to sound sad at the end, but you can’t bite back the smile on your face. Steve turns, deadpan, to look at you.
“Wow, not even my personality?”
“Well…we all have flaws, Harrington.”
“Shut up.” He laughs and shoulder bumps you, and you feel better. You like knowing you have the ability to make him laugh even when he feels down. Someone should always have a friend like that, and you think you may have finally found yours. Maybe in an unconventional way, but you found him nonetheless. Maybe this summer could be fun.

Story Summary: What happens when you see Steve Harrington for what feels like the first time since high school, and you already have someone asking if you’re his girlfriend? And what happens if you say yes?
Chapter Summary: You get to spend a little bit more time with the infamous Steve Harrington, and things are actually going pretty well. Maybe you'll stay friends with Steve after everything is over? After all, it should be over soon...
Lie for Me Chapter 2 - Pillow Fights
Steve Harrington x Reader
Word Count: 1,326
Warnings: None that I'm aware of. Just fluff this chapter! (Maybe like a tiny bit of angst if you squint really hard?)
Things had been going…interestingly, to say the least. Nothing bad, of course, but you had spent a lot more time with Steve the past week than you had ever planned to in your life. Everytime Dustin and Steve were hanging out now, Dustin would always insist that Steve invite you along as well. You had honestly started to enjoy your time with the two of them.
“Hey, is (Y/n) coming tonight?” Dustin asks Steve as they sit down for a movie.
“No, it’s just us tonight. She was, uh, busy.”
“Bull. Call her up, I wanna say hi.”
“I’m not going to--”
“Call her!”
“Fine!” Steve gets up and goes over to Dustin’s home phone, taking it off the wall and dialing your house. It rings a few times before he hears your voice on the line.
“Hello?” You ask.
“Hey, it’s just me. Dustin insisted that he wanted to say--” Before Steve could even finish his sentence, Dustin had taken the phone out of his hand and started speaking.
“Hi (Y/n)! Steve and I are about to watch a movie, did you want to come over and join us?” Dustin asks, a grin splitting his face as he watches Steve’s expression turn sour. It’s not that Steve didn’t want you here, he just felt bad for constantly making you turn on the act in front of Dustin. In all honesty, Steve had grown quite accustomed to your presence over the last week, and he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t looking forward to spending a little more time with you. You had become one of his good friends, and he was happy that it was finally someone his age besides Robin.
“Oh, yeah, sure. I’ll be over in a few.” He hears your voice over the line, and then suddenly the call has ended.
“What was that about her being busy?” Dustin gives Steve a look. Steve rolls his eyes.
“Shut up, Henderson. Let’s go make popcorn.”
Three sharp knocks at the door turned Steve and Dustin’s head immediately. Steve tried to start for the door, but Dustin ran past him, shoving him in the process, so that he could beat him there.
“(Y/n)! Hey!” Dustin lets you in, and you greet him with a smile.
“Hey, Henderson. Where’s Steve at?” You ask.
“Kitchen. We just finished making popcorn, you want some?”
“Of course I do.” You nod, making your way to the kitchen. You arrive to see Steve standing there, bowls filled with popcorn in hand. You smile softly at him.
“M’lady.” Steve offers you a bowl. You graciously accept.
“Why thank you, kind sir. What movie are we watching?”
“Star Wars.”
“Again?”
“It’s one of Dustin’s favorites.” Steve shrugs, taking the other two bowls of popcorn to the living room where Dustin is.
“Because it’s the best! Did you know that--” Dustin starts, but Steve interrupts him.
“Whatever you’re about to say, yes, we know. You’ve likely already told us four times.”
“Steve, let the poor boy be excited about the movie. It’s a good movie.” You smack his arm.
“Yeah. Let the poor boy be excited.” Dustin mimics you, making a puppy dog face at Steve.
“Henderson, I will hit you with this pillow.” Steve grumbles.
“Don’t do that. You’ll start a pillow fight.” You give Steve a warning glance. Before you can even get the movie started, though, you feel a soft thud against the back of your head. You slowly turn around to see a pillow lying at your feet, and two nervous boys in front of you, both pointing a finger at the other one.
Steve looks the most surprised, although he is still laughing.
Dustin, on the other hand, doesn’t look surprised at all but is trying to hold in his laughter. So, you deduce that it was probably him who threw the pillow.
That doesn’t affect who you’re going to throw it at, though.
You swiftly take the pillow and launch it at Steve, hitting him square in the chest.
“Hey!” He gasps, looking down at the fallen pillow. Everything is still for a moment.
“Pillow fight!” Dustin yells, picking up two pillows and launching it at both you and Steve. You pick up pillows of your own and defend yourself. In the span of ten seconds, the room is filled with flying pillows and laughter.
“I’ll get you for that, (Y/n)!” Steve yells over the ruckus, sending a pillow your way. You dodge it and stick your tongue out at him.
“You’re gonna have to try harder than that to get me, Harrington!”
And try he does. In a second, he’s by your side pelting you over and over in the side with a pillow.
“Low blow!” You laugh, grabbing a pillow to hit him on the head with.
“Don’t let me miss out on the fun!” Dustin tackles Steve onto a pile of pillows, earning a laugh from all three of you.
“Dogpile!” You fall on top of the two of them, crushing Steve underneath the weight of you and Dustin.
“Okay, okay! Everyone get up!” Steve concedes. You and Dustin high-five after you’re all done laughing and getting up.
“That was fun, but now I’m tired.” Dustin grins, sitting back down. You look at the strewn-about pillows covering the room, and the fresh bowls of popcorn that got spilled all over the rug.
“We made a mess, though.” You point out.
“We’ll clean it up. Come on, Dustin.” Steve bends down and starts to gather the popcorn up. It’s silent for a moment, causing you to look up at the couch where Dustin’s sitting.
Dustin is passed out, laying down and snoring.
You laugh softly and kneel down next to Steve, helping him clean up.
“He’s passed out, isn’t he?” Steve asks.
“Completely.” You chuckle.
“Typical Henderson.” Steve looks up and smiles at the boy.
“It’s cute, though. You guys obviously care deeply about each other.” You smile at Steve before looking down and continuing your cleaning.
“Yeah. He’s like a little brother to me.” Steve admits, putting the popcorn into one of the bowls.
“I can tell. He really looks up to you, Steve.” You hum, putting your own popcorn back.
“I know. That’s why I don’t want to let him down.” He nods. You lay your hand on his shoulder, a soft smile resting on your lips.
“You won’t. I’m sure of that,” You tell him. He smiles and looks down at the ground.
“Thank you.”
You pat his back a couple of times and stand up, taking the dirty popcorn bowl with you. You cross to the kitchen and throw it away before putting the bowl in the sink.
“You know, we make a pretty good fake couple,” Steve says. You turn around to see him leaning against one of the counters.
“Careful how loud you say that, Dustin might not actually be asleep. Besides, we’ve only got a couple more days left.” You tease, but the comment makes you blush slightly.
“I know. It’ll be a shame, I’m sure Dustin will be heartbroken.” Steve chuckles.
“Well, we can all still hang out as friends, then. As if that’s not low-key what we’ve actually been doing this entire time.”
Steve nods, not saying anything. You wonder if you’ve said something wrong for a moment but decide against mentioning it.
“Well, I should probably get going. Early work day tomorrow and all. I’ll see you later, yeah?” You ask, giving him a small smile as you grab your things.
“Yeah. I’ll see you later.” He nods and smiles at you. You leave and head back to your house with something that you can’t quite decipher gnawing at your mind.
Why did you feel guilty when he went quiet? And why did he go quiet in the first place?
You try to put your thoughts at rest when you get home and get ready for bed, but they don’t quell so easily. Maybe you’ll figure it out tomorrow, but for tonight, you just wanted to focus on getting some well-deserved rest.

It had been one week since Steve had made the realization.
It had struck him like lightning in a thunderstorm, and the heat of it still burned every time he saw her.
She came into Family Video a couple times during that week. She smiled at him, and he smiled back, eyes tracing over her lips, her checks, the hair tucked behind her ear—habits he’d made ages ago without realizing it.
Nothing had changed, but everything was different. There was a pain somewhere in his chest now—it was different than Nancy. That had been an ache wishing something was still his. An ache that faded until it disappeared. This was a throbbing pain of wanting something he might never have. It grew every time he saw Y/N—and it would grow until it consumed him.
It felt like it was about to as she stood across the counter, pushing a movie toward him.
His eyebrows rose as he looked down at the title. “Better Off Dead? Again?”
She folded her arms. “Yes again. Eddie moved D and D to tonight, around his band stuff, so the dweebs aren’t going to be there. It’s just me, you, and Robin. And Robin has a thing for Monique, so I can win her over.”
Robin sidled up to Steve. “I’m won over.”
Steve rolled his eyes. “What if I don’t agree.”
“Two against one. You don't have to.”
Steve groaned, as if he was against watching it. He wasn’t, though. It was Y/N’s favorite, and at some point in time, that became more than enough for him to love it, too.
“Fine. Come by at seven, I’ll have it set up by then.”
Y/N grinned as he checked out the movie, handing it back to her. “Wouldn’t miss it.” She skipped out of the store, extra pep in her step as Steve watched after her.
Robin smirked a bit. “Monique isn’t the only reason that I like Better Off Dead. I really like how Lane mans up enough by the end to get over his ex and realize he has it bad for the new girl.”
He glared at her. “Is that supposed to imply something?”
“No. Unless it means something to you. Then maybe.”
He buried his face in his hands. He hadn’t told Robin anything, but she had him all figured out. He knew he’d been acting off this last week, and that it would only be a matter of time before she called him out.
She had taken his action as his surrender. “I could find an excuse to ditch tonight.”
“Robin.”
“Be sick, have a date, break my leg, I don’t care.”
“Robin—“
“She knows how clumsy I am, a fake injury wouldn’t be suspicious. I mean, I probably will get injured in the end somehow, so—“
“Robin!”
She finally shut up, looking at him. He ran his hand through his hair, trying to gather his thoughts. Because for one week, he had finally thought about it. About her. About how he wanted to hold her hand, feel the electricity he felt bouncing between the both of them. How he wanted to brush her hair behind her ear and kiss her for everything he was worth. How great she would be with six little nuggets, sitting shotgun in an RV.
About how empty everything would be if he ruined it all.
He took a deep breath. “Look, Robin. The last time I… I felt this way about someone, I screwed it up. Big time. I can’t do that to Y/N. I won’t get over it. Not her.”
Robin looked at him, something akin to pity in her eyes. “You won’t screw it up.”
“What if I do?”
She let out a sigh. “Have you considered that maybe, just maybe, she wants the same thing?”
“Should I?” Truth is, he hadn’t dared to let himself entertain the idea.
Robin shrugged. “Monique sure liked Lane, didn’t she?”
He shook his head. “I’m done talking about this. You’re coming tonight.”
“Fine. But I reserve the right to leave if I sense the need to.”
He didn’t have the energy to argue with her.
——————
Steve’s leg bounced up and down as he waited. Robin had done most of the heavy lifting tonight—she gathered the snacks and blankets into the living room and was now sitting on the other sofa, arms folded.
“I can feel the anxiety from here.”
“Shut up.”
“You sure you want me to stay? I’ve still got time to book it out the back.”
“Robin—“ A knock at the door interrupted him. He shot to his feet, pointing a stern finger at his friend. “Stay.”
“I’m not a dog, Harrington.”
“Stay!”
She threw her hands up in surrender as Steve walked to the front door. He opened it and nearly went breathless.
Y/N had changed at some point before coming. Her normal T-shirt had been replaced with a collared blouse, open a couple of buttons and tucked into her favorite pair of black jeans. Her hair had been done, too, tamer than normal.
His stomach flipped as she smiled up at him. “Hey, Steve.”
“H-hey. Come on in.”
Did he really just stutter?
She took off her shoes as Steve shut the door behind her. He led her to the living room and was relieved to see Robin still sitting there.
“Hey, Y/N!”
“Hey Robs! Glad you made it; I missed you last week.”
Robin put a fairly convincing grimace on her face. “You’ll be sad to hear I’m not here long tonight. Vickie wanted to hang out again.”
Steve glared daggers at her. Robin chose not to notice.
Y/N laughed. “Can’t be too mad. You have to make your move soon, or you’re going to miss your chance!”
“Yeah, I wouldn’t be the only one.” Robin finally looked at Steve, the expression on his face mutinous. He cleared it as Y/N glanced over at him. Were her cheeks a bit red?
Steve pointed at the movie in her hand. “Better get started if she can’t be here long.”
“Right!” She got the movie started, sitting next to Steve on the couch. For a moment, he struggled to know what to do with himself. Put his arm around her? Would she feel the difference like he did? He couldn’t stay stiff like he was, it would be obvious something was wrong. In the end, his arm went behind her, resting on the cushions just inches away from her shoulders. Thankfully, she didn’t seem to notice his internal battle.
Robin passed them some snacks as the opening credits rolled, but he didn’t eat anything. His head was spinning. He could feel Y/N’s warmth beside him, though they didn’t touch. He wanted to pull her closer, into his side and press his lips onto her temple. He wanted to—
Robin stood up abruptly. “It’s almost 7:30, I better go,” she said, fighting the smile from her lips.
Y/N grinned at her. “Have fun!”
“Oh believe me, I will.”
And suddenly, it was the two of them.
The same quiet continued as both of them let the movie play. He wasn’t watching, really. He would’ve noticed that Y/N wasn’t either if he wasn’t so lost in his head.
The white nose of the movie stopped suddenly, shaking Steve out of his trance. The remote was in Y/N’s hand and she was looking up at him.
“Steve,” she said, voice full of concern. “You’ve been acting off. Are you ok?”
He pressed his lips together in an attempt and a comforting smile. “I’m fine.”
She rolled her eyes. “Come on, I know you better than that. I held off until Robin left because I didn’t know if you wanted to talk around her, but all week you’ve been… distant.” She glanced over at his arm, still carefully positioned where they wouldn’t touch. “Ever since I dropped you off last week. I’ve… I’ve been worried about you, Steve.”
He could have laughed. All week, he’d been trying to play it all cool, pretend he wasn’t losing his mind when he saw her, and she managed to see right through him—and she was doing the most Y/N thing he could think of. Worrying about him.
“What happened in the car?” she asked softly. “I know something happened. You looked… scared.”
He finally met her eyes. It was like she could see right through him.
“You’re right. I was scared. Still am,” he replied. His chest shuddered as he drew in a breath. “I’m terrified, Y/N. And it has nothing to do with a stupid evil dimension.”
Her brows furrowed, but he continued, hand running through his hair. “That night I finally opened my eyes, and there you were. Sitting right in front of me, shining, like, brighter than the damn sun.” A humorless laugh escaped his lips. “And I couldn’t stop thinking about it. You, and the way you bite your lips when you’re thinking. You do it a lot, and it’s always driven me crazy and now I finally know why. And you do this thing with the kids, they adore you, and maybe I should be jealous but I’m not because it’s you. And you’re gorgeous, way out of my league. I almost lost it tonight when you showed up. But I’m destined to mess it up, because that’s what I do best but I don’t want to lose you, and what I’m really trying to say is I love you.”
He swore she could hear his heart pounding in his chest. Her eyes were wide and shining, and he couldn’t help as the words tumbled out again.
“I love you, Y/N.”
There was only a brief moment before she was crashing into his chest, face buried in his neck and arms wrapped around him. His own arms tightened around her waist like his survival depended on it.
“I didn’t think—I didn’t dare hope—“ she drew in a breath. “I love you, too.”
He felt the words against his skin more then he heard them. He laughed, a hand tracing it’s way to her cheek. He guided her face closer to his, resting their foreheads together.
“Well thank God for that,” he said softly. “But I’m still terrified.”
She grinned. “Too scared to kiss me?”
He laughed, feeling her breath on his lips. “I think I can get over it.”
May I request a Cal Kestis x Reader, where the reader keeps trying to prank Cal but it doesn't work like 90% of the time? The one time it works, it backfires?
Um yes absolutely you may request this, thank you for doing so. Let me get on this asap
Steve Harrington comforting a reader who is insecure about their stretch marks like he invited them to a pool day but they dont want to go bc of their insecurity? I couldn't find a list with your boundaries/stuff you won write so if this crosses them I am sorry
A/N: As someone with a lot of stretch marks, I def feel this one!!! It's taken me a while to get used to them!
Pairing: Steve Harrington x gn!reader (no pronouns used, but references to wearing a swimsuit/bikini)
Warnings: Body insecurity (stretch marks)
Steve had been pestering you about the swim party for a couple of weeks now. It was something the whole group had been planning for a while; snacks were assigned to various people, rides were cordinated, and schedules were cleared for the day. It was a big deal for all of them.
And you didn't know how to say that you didn't really want to go.
The whole concept of the swim party seemed fun--enticing, even--but there was one simple fact that kept you so hesitant.
Having to wear a swimsuit.
So when Steve brought up the party to you again today, you struggled to find a response.
"Y/N, did you hear me?"
Your eyes shot up to look at him over the counter of Family Video. "Yeah, yeah. The party. You said you'd pick me up."
"At seven."
"At seven," you repeated quietly.
He noticed something in your tone. It had been a couple of months since the two of you had gotten together--a couple of wonderful, laughter-filled and magical months--and in that time he'd gotten a lot better at reading you. "Is... that ok?"
You nodded a little too quickly.
He sighed, shaking his head and leaning against his hands against the counter so that he was closer to you. "What's bothering you? Every time I bring up the party, you tense up. You don't have to go if you don't want to."
"I want to go, really, I just..." You bit your lip. "It's stupid."
He walked around the counter, coming to stand by you. "If it's enough to get you worried, it's not stupid."
A sigh escaped your lips as you looked down at the counter in front of you. "I don't know. I usually avoid swimming, because, well, I don't like wearing swimsuits or bikinis or all that--"
"Babe," Steve said. "You're gorgeous. I'm sure it would look great on you."
You blushed, but continued. "It's not even that. I have, you know, stretch marks, and..." You trailed off, thought dying in your throat. "It sounds stupid."
Steve placed his hands on your shoulders to gently turn you toward him. “Hey,” he said softly. “That doesn’t sound stupid.”
Hesitantly, your eyes met his. “No?”
“Nope. I’ve got scars now, too. Can’t help being a little self conscious about them.”
You chuckled a bit. “Yeah, but yours are from fighting flying bat demons in an alternate hell dimension. That’s cool.”
“And yours are from you growing and becoming who you are today.” He wrapped his arms around you, bringing you closer so that your noses brushed against each other. “Pretty cool if you ask me,” he said with a grin. He pressed a soft kiss to your lips.
You smiled back at him. “Thanks, Steve.”
“You really don’t have to come if you don’t want to. I get it. Or you can come and not swim. Whatever you want. But the kids will sure miss you, and I’ll miss you even more.” He left a kiss on your forehead.
---------
In the end, you decided to go. After wrestling with it in your mind for the next couple of days, you decided that the fun might distract you enough from your insecurities. Steve was elated when he heard your decision, stealing a few kisses in his excitement and lifting you off your feet until Robin yelled at him that you two were gross.
Friday came, and you waited by the door. You’d found a pair of swimming shorts that offered a bit more coverage, and had elected to wear them. You tried not to worry about the voices in your head making you question it. Were people going to ask you why you were wearing them? Would they stare?
But then Steve was at the door, telling you you were beautiful and holding your hand as you walked to the car. And the worries seemed a lot smaller.
At the pool, the party was already in full swing. Dustin and Mike were practically attacking each other in the water, while Nancy and Robin sunbathed on some chairs. Everyone excitedly shouted hellos and welcomes to you and Steve, and then they went on with their play. You raised a hand to block the splash as Eddie did a cannonball into the pool and laughed.
You turned to see Steve smiling at you, just having taken off his shirt. You glanced down at the scars on his sides, and he shrugged
A grin stretched across your face. “Still pretty cool.” He laughed, and suddenly he charged, picking you up and throwing you into the pool.
The rest of the night was full of joyful screams and shouts, splashing and battling in the water. And you didn’t think about the marks on your skin for a second of it.
At some point, you caught a glance at Steve staring at you, a grin wider than the sky on his face. The look in his eyes was absolutely adoring.
Warnings/Cliches: Steve’s dumb dad, yelling, fighting (pretty brief), tiny bit of bullying, popular boy and nerdy girl, slow burn, strangers to lovers (eventually)
Story Summary: Steve Harrington remembers Y/N from high school. He never intended on her getting mixed up with all of his monsters. He never intended to fall in love with her.
Chapter Summary: In junior year of high school, Y/N is assigned a project with Steve Harrington. Maybe he’s not as bad as she thinks.
A/N: Hello all! I’m starting this series and I’m SO excited for it!! Shout out to my bestie @multi-obsessed-fanfic-writer for motivating me to write it lol. It’s going to be a pretty slow burn, and after this chapter, I’m going to start integrating it more into the main storylines of the show. Let me know if you want to be tagged in any future chapters!

Steve Harrington and Y/N L/N had history.
It wasn’t long—it would hardly be a sentence in a textbook if anyone would bother to record it at all. But for better or for worse, it was there.
It had started in the beginning of junior year. Y/N was a good student—not perfect like Nancy Wheeler, but good. She turned stuff in, passed her tests, and most importantly, she kept her head down.
She was sure most people considered her a loner. It wasn’t completely true; she had a couple of friends who operated similarly to her. Lorraine was her closest by far, but Y/N still rarely hung out with her outside of school. She didn’t mind it that way.
Parties and popularity had never been her thing—reading overdue library books and observing people who thought no one was looking were her favorite pastimes.
Imagine her dismay when the king of Hawkins High himself had been assigned as her partner for the year’s first group project.
To his credit, he didn’t look any more thrilled. But Tommy and Carol had this class with him, and they had paired up immediately, leaving him scrambling with the leftovers until Mr. Chase had told him to quit holding up class and take the one open seat that remained—the one to Y/N’a right.
He plopped down with a sigh, arms folded over his chest without sparing a glance at her. She would have been hurt if it wasn’t entirely expected.
Mr. Chase droned on about the ins and outs about the project. It was pretty straight forward—a History presentation with sort of visual aid, due a week from then. He stopped talking the last few minutes to let people discuss with their partners on times to meet.
Steve finally looked over at Y/N. “I can’t fail this assignment, my dad’s been on my tail about this class since it started.”
Y/N raised an eyebrow. “Is this your way of telling me I’m doing all the work?”
“No, I just—you better not make me fail, alright?” He took her pencil from off the desk and scribbled his phone number and address in her notebook. “You can come over after school and we’ll figure it out.”
“Okay,” she said slowly. “Do you—“
The bell rang and Steve shot out of his chair. He pointed a finger at her. “My house, 4 o’clock. Don’t be late.” And with that, he turned back to Tommy and Carol.
Y/N rolled her eyes as she finished packing up her things. This was going to be a long week.
———
The Harrington’s house was pretty much what Y/N expected—big, nice, and nothing like where she lived. She was sure her ancient car was an eyesore just parked on the street.
She trekked up to the front door, backpack slung over her shoulder. Her knocks seemed to echo down the street. After a couple of moments, the door swung open.
“L/N,” he said simply, leaning against the doorframe.
“Harrington.”
He opened the door wider. “Well, come on in. We can go upstairs.”
She followed him in, trying not to seem hesitant. She’d never been to his house before, and he was clearly aware of that fact. Despite all the parties he had thrown when his parents were away, she’d never bothered to show up. She’d never really been invited, either.
He led her upstairs into his room. It was what she had expected—just as everything else she’d seen of Steve Harrington so far. Some clutter around the room, posters of girls in swimsuits, cans of soda on his dresser.
Steve plopped down into the middle of his bed. Y/N elected to sit on the chair by his desk.
“Ok,” he said. “So I was thinking, like we need to get at least a C on this, so—“
She let out a small snort without meaning too.
He shot her a look. “What?”
“Nothing. Just… a C? Shouldn’t you aim higher than that?”
He shrugged, unfazed. “I’m just trying to pass. Keep the grades up just enough for swim team.”
Y/N tried not to roll her eyes. “Ok, fine. I promised we’ll get better than a C.”
“Good. Anyway, what did you think—“
A door slammed downstairs. Steve swore underneath his breath. “They weren’t supposed to be home until tomorrow. Just–hold tight, I’ll be back in a second.”
He got up, closing the door behind him and leaving Y/N alone in his room. After a few moments, she heard voices talking; Steve and another man. She assumed it was his father.
It only took a few moments for the words to get heated.
She couldn’t tell exactly what was being said, but it was several minutes of loud back and forth. She heard steps coming back up the stairs.
“Get back down here!” the man yelled.
“And listen to you scream at me for crap I didn’t do?!” Steve threw the door open and he slammed it close behind him. He was fuming, hands trembling. His expression softened when he saw Y/N sitting there.
His shoulders dropped, releasing some of the tension as he sat on the edge of the bed. He cleared his throat. “I’m um… Sorry you had to hear that.”
Her lips pressed together in a tight smile. “I’m sorry it happened.” She was surprised to find that she was completely genuine in saying it.
A sigh escaped his lips. “Well, it’s pretty normal around here. Since they’re home, we’ll probably want to go to your place to work on stuff.”
She nodded. In the next moment, Steve changed the subject to the project. It was obvious he didn’t want to talk about it–it was something that he had never intended Y/N to see. The next hour or so passed uneventfully, and soon Y/N was on her way out.
As she left the house (quietly, as Steve had insisted to not disturb his parents), she couldn’t help but feel she understood Steve Harrington a little bit better.
——
The next day, Steve came over to her house right at 4 o’clock. He hadn’t acknowledged her at all at school–not that she had expected him to.
She motioned for him to come in. He took off his jacket as he did, setting it on the chair by the door.
“Um, I heard some… yelling or something next door?” he said. “You don’t live next to a pyscho murderer or anything, right?”
She chuckled. “No, that’s just the Hendersons. Dustin probably has his crazy friends with him, playing Dungeons and Demons or whatever. They get pretty worked up about it.”
“Oh, of course. Should have known.”
If she didn’t know better, he might have been a bit worried for her for a second there.
She led him over to the kitchen, sitting down at one of the barstools. He took the one next to her.
“Alright, so I’ve been working on the visual aid, it’s not much so far but it’s a work in progress.” She gestured at the diorama she had built since they had talked over it the night before.
Steve laughed. “Not much so far? Are you kidding me? It looks pretty much done.”
“It’s not done yet, I mean, the scaling is all off, and the coloring–”
“Did you seriously work on that all last night? That’s what you spend your weeknights doing?”
Y/N rolled her eyes. “Look Harrington, I promised you better than a C, but I want to get an A on this, so sue me if I’m taking it seriously.”
He put his hands up defensively. “No, no, it’s fine. I appreciate it, really, but don’t you ever do anything fun?”
She glared at him.
“I mean, come on , L/N. You’re a junior in high school and I’ve never seen you out on a Friday night.”
“I don’t really like going out, Harrington. And besides, if I ever want to get out of this hellhole, I’ve got to work my tail off to do it. Not everyone has daddy’s money to use.” She covered her mouth with her hand as Steve raised his eyebrows. “I’m sorry, that was probably too far.”
He shook his head a little bit. “No, you’re right. I shouldn’t be poking fun at how hard you work. But… it couldn’t hurt to have fun every once and while.”
“Yeah. I guess.” There was quiet for a moment. Y/N grabbed her notebook, flipping it to her page with notes. “Well, I guess we can get started, then.”
Once again, the night passed. And so did the night after that. And the next one. By the end of the week, they had a project they both could be proud of. Steve seemed a bit surprised at himself with it.
It wasn’t the until the day after the presentation that Steve Harrington did something unexpected.
She was kneeling down to gather the books that had been pushed out of her hands. She usually managed to avoid these sorts of things–it was the reason she kept her head down in the first place. But despite her efforts to fade in to the background, there was always the occasional observant bully that found themselves an easy target. She went to grab her last book, but a hand was already holding it out to her. Confused, she looked up to see the hand belonged to no other than Steve Harrington.
Taking the book from him, she stood.
“Thanks?” The word came out more like a question than she had intended.
“Yeah,” he said. He folded his arms. “They do it because you don’t stand up for yourself.”
“Right,” you said slowly.
“I’m just…. yeah.”
“Yeah.”
“Okay.” He head turned over his shoulder as he heard Tommy calling his name.
“You can do better than them, you know,” Y/N blurted out.
His head shot back toward her. “What?”
“You just… forget it. Thanks.”
And without another word, she turned heel and headed down the hall.
Since that week, a silent understanding had passed between the two. She didn’t know quite how to say it, but her and Steve Harrington understood each other a little better now–maybe better than either of their groups of friends did. When they passed in the hall, they didn’t look at each other. But no more bullies taunted her. And she wouldn’t let her friends talk to harshly about the King of Hawkins High.
Her and Steve Harrington had… something. It was small. It was brief. It was insignificant. But it was there.

Lie for Me Chapter 1 - Movies and Fabrications
Steve Harrington x Reader

“Hey, Robin, I’ll pick you up after work tomorrow, yeah?” You ask your best friend, Robin, as she leaves your house.
“Uh, yeah, that should be good. Steve is dropping me off so you can pick me up and we’ll watch a movie.” She nods.
“Steve works at Family Video with you?” You give her a face, stopping in the doorway as she starts the walk back to her house.
“Yeah. He worked with me at Scoops Ahoy, remember? He and I have been through a lot together, we’re best friends now.” She jokes.
“Best friends?” You raise your eyebrows.
“Kidding! Sort of! See you tomorrow, (Y/n/n)!” She calls as she runs off. You close the door behind yourself, laughing softly at her. Robin Buckley has been your best friend for the longest time, and you wouldn’t trade her for the world. You guys have an unbreakable friendship and you love each other.
~+~
“Welcome to Family Video, how can I-- oh. It’s just you.” Robin turns to see you from her place at the counter, a deadpan look on her face. You know she hates work, but it’s a necessary evil.
“It’s me!” You grin at her. She smiles back at you softly and looks at the clock.
“I’ve only got five minutes left on my shift. I got us a movie to watch later and put it in the back. I’ll grab it real quick then we can head out.” Robin explains quickly, gathering some of her stuff together.
“Sounds good. I’ll just be browsing until you’re done.” You nod and head over to one of the movie sections, picking out a film you might want to watch next week. You pass a few titles that are decently notable, Footloose, Sixteen Candles, and The Breakfast Club sticking out to you.
“Steve!” You hear a yell behind you from the front door of the store.
“Henderson, what are you doing here?” the Harrington boy asks from behind the counter. You turn your head slightly to look at the two boys, catching Steve’s eye after doing so. Your eyes widen and you duck your head to continue looking at movies, pretending that you didn’t just make eye contact with Steve Harrington.
No, you do not have a crush on him. In fact, you don’t even really know the guy. You knew of him in high school, but he was just loud and annoying. Not to mention, he was a popular jock, so you never really crossed paths with him. But past that? You haven’t seen him. Maybe once at Scoops Ahoy as you were visiting Robin, but you don’t remember. Besides, it’s not like you’ve ever talked. You were in the same graduating class, that’s it.
However, it is still slightly embarrassing to make eye contact with a person you knew from high school whom you haven’t seen since.
“Seriously, Steve? No one? Not a singular girl? You’re kidding me. You’re Steve Harrington! You have to have a girl!” You hear Dustin practically shout at his friend, eliciting a small chuckle from you.
“I do!” Steve defends himself. You try to tune out their conversation, wanting to be polite and not eavesdrop too much. You continue to look at different movies, finally picking out Indiana Jones: Raiders of The Lost Ark for Robin to put in the back for movie night next week.
You’re engrossed in your own thoughts when suddenly you feel a tapping on your shoulder. You spin around and are greeted by none other than Dustin Henderson himself, a full toothy grin on display.
“Oh, hi. Can I help you?” You ask, not bothering to hide the surprise on your face. Dustin nods.
“Yeah, hi, um, is it true you’re dating Steve?” He asks. Your eyes practically bulge out of your skull, and your head whips up to look at Steve who is still behind the counter. He has wide eyes and nods his head very vigorously, trying to get you to play along. You hesitate and weigh the options in your mind. If you say no, you risk embarrassing Steve in front of his friend. However, you also don’t really know Steve, so it’s little to no loss for you. On the flip side, though, if you say yes… you might be able to get an “IOU” out of Steve Harrington, which might eventually come in handy.
“Uh…yes, why?” You say slowly, looking back down at Dustin in front of you. You miss the look of shock on Steve’s face that you actually played along.
“Dude,” Dustin turns around and yells at Steve, “how could you not tell me!?”
“I-I…” Steve looks dumbfounded, looking between you and Dustin.
“Because I asked him to keep it a secret. My family knows of the Harrington reputation in high school, and they weren’t too fond of him, so we’re trying to get them to see that he’s changed before we publicize our romance.” You swoop in and save the day, sauntering over to join the boys at the checkout counter.
“Yeah, what she said.” Steve agrees.
“Darling, could you put this movie in the back for me please? I’m saving it for later.” You tease him, handing him the movie you picked out. You don’t miss the way his cheeks burn at your nickname as he takes the movie and mumbles something along the lines of ‘sure thing’. He sets the movie under the counter for the time being.
“How long have you guys been dating?” Dustin asks incredulously.
“A month.” Steve pipes up, eyes darting to you as if to ask you if that’s okay. You nod in agreement.
“A month?” Dustin groans.
“Yes, Henderson. A month.” Steve sighs.
“I never see the two of you together!”
“What do you think the point of a secret is?” You hum, looking intently at the boy. He frowns.
“Does Robin know?” He asks.
“Does Robin know what?” Robin appears from the employee room in the back with Star Wars: A New Hope resting in her hands.
“Nothing--”
“THEY’RE DATING!” Dustin blurts out, pointing to the two of you. You and Steve both whip around to stare at him and he gives you both an apologetic look.
“...what?” Robin seems more confused than anything.
“Dustin, go home.” Steve demands.
“What? But--” Dustin tries to defend himself to no avail.
“Go home.”
“Why?”
“Because the grown-ups need to talk now. Robin, can I have a chat with you?” Steve grimaces.
“Can we have a chat with you?” You interject. Robin’s your best friend first, she needs to understand what just happened from you.
“Yes, we need to talk.” Steve gestures to the three of you.
“But how can I go home when I just found out--”
“Henderson,” You turn and give him a stern look, “go home. Now.”
“Fine.” He huffs and turns around, walking out of Family Video.
“Okay, what’s going on? Because I know for a fact the two of you are not dating. You’re both my best friends, so I would’ve figured out at this point or one of you would have spilled.” Robin asks, crossing her arms and looking at the two of you expectantly. You and Steve look at each other nervously, unsure where to start on your story.
“Steve lied to Dustin so he wouldn’t look like a loser.” You blurt out, pursing your lips afterward to keep from laughing.
“You did what, Harrington?” Robin’s eyes go wide as she turns to stare at Steve.
“Why’d you have to word it like that?” Steve groans, rubbing a hand over his face.
“Do you even know her name?” Robin asks, pointing to you. You look over at Steve expectantly.
“Uh…yes.” Steve laughs nervously.
“What is it, then?” You raise an eyebrow.
“....(Y/l/n).”
“First name, Steve. What’s my first name?”
“I don’t know!”
“Wow. Typical Harrington move. You know what,” you start to grab your stuff, “I’ll just go. You can explain to your friend Dustin there that you are a loser and don’t have a girlfriend.”
“Wait! I’m sorry!” Steve apologizes, hand lightly grazing your upper arm to stop you from walking out. You glare at him.
“Her name’s (Y/n), by the way. You might want to know that if you’re going to date her,” Robin says.
“He’s not going to date me, because this fake scenario is over. Have a good one.” You spit out, turning to head for the door.
“Just a week, please, (Y/n)!” Steve calls after you. You turn around and give him an incredulous look.
“Not a chance, Harrington. You never bothered to know my name despite us being in the same graduating class! You’re lucky I even played along with your rouse in the first place.” You scoff at him.
“You’re right. I am lucky that you played along with it, thank you. Please, just play along for one week longer. Then we can break up as if nothing happened and I’ll just tell Dustin we went our separate ways. He already thinks low enough of me, I need to be a good role model for him to look up to. That includes being able to get a girlfriend.”
You look at Steve for a moment, seeing him practically begging for your help. You debate it in your mind. I mean, it is only a week. And you only have to keep up the act in front of Dustin, so it’s not like it would affect the rest of your personal life, really. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.
“You owe me big time for this, Harrington.” You finally agree.
“Is that a yes?” Steve’s eyes light up.
“You’re seriously saying yes?” Robin looks dumbfounded.
“Yes. Yes, I am.”
And that is where the beginning of your adventurous summer all started.

Hmmm I’m thinking about making a Steve Harrington series (fake dating hehe)… would anyone be interested in this?? I’ll probably do it anyway but I’m just gauging the interest level :)

Bruises and Bats
Steve Harrington x Reader
Word Count: 3,818
Warnings: ST4 Spoilers! Other than that...canon-typical violence, I guess? Nothing really
Another bruise. You’re not sure how many that is this week, but the number keeps adding up. You’re not sure how your soulmate is getting beat up so often, but you know better than to question it to anyone else. After all, what if he ends up being a gang member or something?
“Honey, what happened to your eye? Is that yours or your soulmates?” Your mom gives you a concerned look, rubbing a finger lightly over the decorative bruising that paints your face purple and black.
“Soulmates. You think I got a black eye myself, mom?” You snort. She gives you a look.
“Okay, yes, you don’t get into fights. I know. But still, it’s just unusual for someone to get so many--”
“Okay, mom, I love you! I gotta go to school, bye.” You cut her off, grabbing a biscuit for breakfast and heading out the door.
“Be careful sweetie! There’s a lot of scary things happening around this town right now!” She calls after you, and you wave behind you to signal that you heard her.
As you arrive at Hawkins High, where you work for the newspaper, you fall in line next to your best friend, Nancy Wheeler.
“Another black eye?” She chuckles.
“Yeah. He must like fights.” You shrug, biting into your biscuit. Nancy is quiet for a moment, deep in her thoughts. You look at her contemplative face and think for just a moment that maybe the Wheeler girl is hiding something from you, but it’s gone in a moment when she looks back at you and smiles.
“Huh? Sorry, did you say something? I was lost in my own head,” she says, waving dismissively.
“Nothing.” You shrug it off, giving her a thoughtful smile back. Nancy would never keep secrets from you.
“You know what your bruise kind of looks like?” She asks, stopping in front of the door to the newspaper room.
“What?” You ask amused.
“The same one that S--”
“Steve!” A teenage boy from down the hall calls. Dustin Henderson.
“Hey, Henderson, I’m just here for a moment. I don’t want to be in these halls any longer than I have to be, I’ve already graduated from this place.” Steve mutters as he crosses the hall to Dustin.
“What were you saying, Nance?” You redirect your attention back to her, but she’s just smirking.
“Oh, nothing. Nevermind. Hey, do you want to come over to my house tonight? We can have a girl's night. We haven’t had one in a long time.” She offers, pushing open the door and letting you walk into the room.
“Yeah, that sounds great. But…I don’t know, isn’t there a curfew with all of this weird stuff going on? I mean, Chrissy died. Shouldn’t we be a little more cautious?” You ask, lowering your voice at the mention of the late cheerleader. You both stop at Nancy’s work desk.
“I just want to feel like a normal teenager again despite all of this, can’t you indulge me this once? Besides, your mom will say yes when she knows you’ll be with me.” She insists.
“That’s right. You’re miss straight-A’s the goody-two-shoes girl.” You mumble, setting your stuff down at your own desk that sits next to hers.
“Don’t forget that we have been best friends for a long time and that you have the same reputation.” She points out.
“Okay, fine. I’ll come to your house tonight. I’ve got nothing better to do anyway.”
“Nothing better? Ouch.” She puts a hand mockingly to her chest in fake hurt. You give her a face and then you’re both sat down working on the latest news article to publish.
Later that night, after work, you hear the telephone ringing downstairs. You’re sitting on your bed, trying to piece some details together of a story you are working on for the newspaper. Something isn’t adding up about Chrissy’s death, and you wanted to get to the bottom of it, but you’re still not sure how to do that without coming across as either insensitive or crazy to the rest of the town. So, you’re working on it alone. Maybe Nancy would believe you when you said you weren’t buying the whole “Eddie Munson is evil” ploy that everyone seemed to take up so easily.
“Honey, it’s for you! Nancy’s on the other end!” Your mom calls from downstairs.
Crap, you forgot to go to her house.
“Coming!” You yell, scrambling to collect all of the strewn-about pieces of paper that connect your crazy theory.
You run down the stairs and grab the phone, hearing Nancy’s voice already speaking on the other end.
“Shh! I’ll get her here, don’t worry!”
What is she talking about? Was she meaning you?
“Nance?” You finally say something.
“(Y/n)! Hey! Were you gonna head to my house for a movie and girl’s night?” She asks nonchalantly. You pick up on a weird vibe from her.
“....uh, yeah, I was just about to leave.” You tell her. Your mom whips her head around to look at you, then gestures to the clock which flashes 7:13. You wave a hand dismissively at her, mouthing ‘it’s Nancy’. Your mother rolls her eyes at you but agrees and walks away.
“Great! See you in a few!” She hangs up almost immediately after. You set the phone on the wall, a weird pit in your stomach as you grab a change of clothes for the night over there. At the last second, you grab a small knife that you sometimes carry on you as a safety precaution. For some reason, you feel like you might need it tonight.
You arrive at the Wheelers’ house a few minutes later, bag in hand. You knock three times sharply and immediately the door swings open to reveal Nancy, Lucas Sinclair, and Max Mayfield. They usher you inside quickly.
“What’s going on? I thought this was a girl’s night?” You ask, looking around the living room.
“Yeah, um…I was lying, (Y/n). We need your help.” Nancy tells you.
“I knew it!” You point an accusatory finger at her.
“What?” Max asks, looking between the two of you.
“I knew you were hiding something, Nance. I saw it this morning. What’s going on?” You ask, looking between the three of them.
“You know the crazy stuff that’s been going on in Hawkins? Chrissy’s death?” Nancy asks.
“Yeah. I actually had a theory about that- I don’t think that Eddie killed her--”
“He didn’t. It was a monster. An otherworldly monster.” Max interjects.
“A…well…” You trail off, not really sure if she’s joking or not. She seems very, very serious.
“We’re serious, (Y/n). There’s this other world mirroring ours. We call it the Upside Down…”
About an hour later, after the multiple explanations and freak-outs, the four of you went through, you finally understood and accepted the concept of the upside down and all its weird creatures.
“Great. So, basically, we’re all going to die.” You grimace.
“No. That’s what we’re trying to stop.” Lucas shakes his head.
“Yeah, but how are we going to do that without the magic girl who has psychic powers, hmm?” You quirk an eyebrow at them. They fall silent.
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out. You can help us with that.” Nancy sighs, grabbing her stuff.
“What are you doing? What do you mean I can help?” You ask, grabbing your own things and following Nancy as she heads out the door with Lucas and Max in tow.
“We’re going to see some more people. Come on, we’ll explain your part in this along the way.” Nancy responds. You sigh.
You hate being in the dark about things. Just how many people know about the upside down? Why are you the last one being brought into the loop? Who else is there? Why do they get to know? Why do you need to know now?
“Nancy.” You stop dead in your tracks. You aren’t moving another foot until they tell you why you’re here.
“What? (Y/n), we gotta go.” Nancy groans, walking back to you. Lucas and Max look at each other, confused.
“Why am I here? Why am I going? What is my part in this?” You fire off the questions at her, dying to know the answers.
“That’s…I…” She looks at Lucas and Max, but they give her nothing.
“There’s got to be a reason. What is it?”
“You’re the best detective I know, (Y/n). If anyone can figure out where Vecna is and how to stop him, it’s you. I trust you more than I trust pretty much anyone on this earth, so I need you right now. Please.” She tells you, her voice dropping low as she hits you with her words. You give her a long look before cracking a small smile.
“I knew I was a better detective than you.” You grin at her.
“Seriously? That’s what you got out of that?” She asks incredulously, shaking her head as the four of you get into her car.
“Hey, you gave me a reason. That’s all I needed. Now let’s go take down a crazy monster.” You smile. Nancy hits the gas.
“Why are we in the middle of the woods?” You ask as the four of you come up on Skull Rock where another group of people is already waiting.
“There you guys are! Did you get (Y/n)?” A voice asks, and you see Robin Buckley standing before you. You blink. How does she get to know about all of this before you?
“(Y/n)’s here?” You turn to see Eddie Munson standing behind a few of the others, and your eyes light up. You’re glad they found him and that he’s safe, you always knew he wasn’t the criminal the town was painting him to be.
“Yeah, she’s here. Let’s go. Dustin, you got the compass?” Nancy asks.
“Right here.” Dustin answers.
“Then what are we waiting for, Henderson?” A new voice pipes up. You whip your head over to see Steve Harrington at the head of the group, waiting for Dustin to lead you guys to who knows where.
“Okay, what? How does Harrington get to know about the upside down before me? You dated him for like a few months in high school, Nance, I hardly think that tops your best friend of eight years.” You hiss at Nancy as the group starts to walk.
“I’ve been here since the beginning, (Y/l/n), you don’t even know the half of it,” Steve responds, overhearing your question.
“He kinda found out by accident the first time this all went down,” Nancy explains. You deadpan.
“I’m hurt, honestly.” You tsk, but they all know you’re joking.
“Shh! We’re coming up on the lake.” Dustin tells the group. Everyone gets quiet, and Steve hangs back to walk next to you for a moment.
“We haven’t really talked a whole lot before, have we?” He asks you quietly.
“No, not really. I mean, the last time we really talked you were my best friend’s boyfriend. Now you’re her ex.” You mumble.
“Harsh, but true.” He chuckles. You look over at him and smile slightly. Your smile almost instantly drops as you see the outline of a bruise around his eye.
“Is the black eye a hazard of the job?” You joke, gesturing to the events that are currently taking place.
“Ha, yeah I suppose it is. What about you?” He asks, motioning to the same one you have. You purse your lips, unsure if you should tell the truth or not. You don’t want him to think that you’re suggesting he’s your soulmate, so you shrug.
“Dunno, just showed up.”
“Ah. A soulmate mark, then?” He asks.
“I suppose so. Couldn’t be anything else that I know of.” You nod. He falls silent and the two of you don’t talk the rest of the way to the lake.
You get onto the boat with Robin, Steve, Nancy, and Eddie as the kids stay behind.
Once the boat is out in the middle of the lake, you think you know what’s happening. A high schooler just died here, so it probably has to do with the upside down and a gate opening, and now you guys are investigating it. Hence, why you’re here.
“Wait, wait, guys, look.” Nancy points at the compass which is going crazy spinning around now.
Steve starts to almost immediately take his clothes off.
“Steve, what are you doing?” You ask.
“Somebody’s gotta go check this thing out, unless one of you guys can top being a Hawkins High Swim co-captain and a certified lifeguard for three years, then… it’s gotta be me. No complaints, alright?” Steve explains quickly, standing up and rocking the boat slightly to continue his stripping. You cough uncomfortably as Eddie says something about not complaining, but you’re not listening because you’re sort of side-tracked with Steve taking off his shirt. You don’t mean to stare, but you can’t help it. It’s like your eyes are drawn to him.
You miss the look that Nancy and Robin give to each other after seeing your gaze.
As Steve gets ready to jump in the water, you have the sudden urge to protect him. You’re not sure why, as you don’t know him all too well, but the feeling is overwhelming as you grab onto his forearm before he goes in.
“Steve?” You ask, unsure of why you’re even doing this. He gives you a quizzical look, but mostly out of curiosity about what you want to say, not weirded out by the gesture.
“Be careful.” You whisper to him, giving him a small smile that he returns gratefully with a nod. You’re not sure why, but you feel some kind of connection to him. A small spark, if you will. But you don’t want to catch feelings for a guy you barely know, not to mention your best friend’s ex.
Steve jumps into the water and you’re left a bubble of anxiety as you wait for him to resurface.
“What was that about, (Y/n)?” Nancy asks, trying to pass the time.
“What was what about?” You give her a confused look.
“Be careful? You barely know him. Why so sentimental?” Robin asks from the other side of you.
“I don’t know, I…I just had an urge to tell him. I want him to come back safely.” You shrug, not sure what it means.
“Okay. If that’s all it is, then, sure.” Robin nods.
“What does that mean?” You give her a look.
“Oh, nothing. Just…are you sure that’s all there is to it?” Nancy presses you. You turn to Eddie, asking him silently if he knows what’s going on.
“Don’t look at me. This is girl stuff, I don’t know.” Eddie holds his hands up defensively.
Before you can get another word in, Steve resurfaces.
“I’m back!” He exclaims, sucking in a deep breath.
“You found it?” You ask, launching yourself toward the side of the boat that he’s on.
“I found it.” He nods, grabbing onto the boat in front of you. You set your hand on top of his without thinking, turning back to grab the radio with your other hand.
“Dustin, you’re an Einstein. Steve found the gate.” You walkie-talkie the kids on land.
“It was pretty wild. More of a snack-size gate than the mama gate, but it’s still pretty big.” Steve explains the gate to you. You’re about to respond when he’s suddenly tugged underwater again.
“Steve!” All of you scream, grabbing at the water to see if you can catch him before he’s too far under. It’s to no avail as the four of you grasp at nothing, and Steve is gone.
In a split-second decision, you hop out of the boat after him. You hear the others scream your name behind you, but you hit the water before they can even try to stop you. You start to swim down as fast as you possibly can, trying your hardest to reach Steve. He’s too important to far too many people for him to go like this.
Once you’re a little over halfway down, you feel an intense pain scrape along your back. You let out a scream of pain and surprise at the feeling, turning around to fight the potential monster that has found you.
To your surprise, though, nothing is there. The searing pain continues, but you’re alone for as far as the eye can see. You fight off the pain and fear, continuing your dive deeper, when the pain stops. You see the red light of the gate and swim quickly to it before diving in and arriving on the other side. Into the upside down.
You stand up and look around you, seeing a human figure not too far from you.
“Steve?” You yell. Steve turns around and sees you, relief flooding his features at seeing a familiar face with him.
“Why did you follow me? You’ve never been to the upside down, you don’t know what it’s like here. You could get hurt!” He rushes to you, worry etching into his face.
“I’m fine! I’m fine, let’s get out of here!” You brush it off, trying to get him to walk back to the gate. Suddenly, shrieking and wailing bat-like creatures start to appear from the sky.
Steve looks around, running to the nearest thing that could make a weapon and grabbing it. You take the knife out of your waistband that you put in there before you went to Nancy’s house. You knew this would come in handy.
“Stay behind me!” Steve demands, holding his oar at the ready as the creatures descend upon you guys. They try to attack him, but he bats them away a few times. He only gets lucky the first couple of swings, though, because before you realize it, he’s on the ground with a bat’s tail around his throat.
You feel a similar choking pressure around your own throat, and what feels like barbed wires cutting into your skin. You gasp and clutch at your throat, falling to your knees, as Steve writhes against the creature on the ground. The two of you make eye contact and you immediately know.
Steve Harrington is your soulmate.
Fighting off the invisible pressure and pain, you drag your way over to the bat-like creature and sink your knife deep into its body. It cries out and falls limp, freeing Steve from its grasp. A creature flies down and sinks its teeth into your side and both you and Steve cry out similarly, feeling the same pain. You tear it off of yourself and slice clean through it right as Steve fights off another one. Robin, Nancy, and Eddie come running up to the two of you to finish off a couple of others that had joined their friends. You and Steve share a meaningful look, but you both silently agree to talk about it later as you fight off the creatures with your friends.
Once you’ve finished fighting them and Steve has torn the last one apart, Nancy rushes to the two of you.
“Are you okay?” She asks, checking both of you for injuries.
“I mean- they took about a pound of flesh. But otherwise, yeah, never been better.” Steve responds bitterly, looking over at you and giving you a once-over.
“We don’t have time to talk about it here.” You mumble, and he nods.
“Time to talk about what?” Robin asks.
“Nothing. Let’s move. We have to get back to--”
Before you can finish your sentence, more bat-like creatures have landed to guard the entrance of the gate back to the normal world.
“Alright… there’s not that many. We can take them, right?” Steve asks as your group starts to huddle together.
Before anyone can respond, a large swarm of creatures starts toward the same gate.
“You were saying?” Robin asks weakly.
“The woods! Come on!” Nancy grabs you and starts running. The others follow quickly behind. The five of you run until you find Skull Rock again, this time on the wrong side of the dimension. You sigh as you finally get to sit down, hidden from the giant swarm of death creatures that you hate.
As soon as you all catch your breath, you and Steve look at each other.
“You,” Steve murmurs, walking over to you. He lifts your chin lightly and looks at the marks on your neck, brushing his fingers over them softly.
“Ow-” You grimace, pushing his hand away as you give him a soft glare that holds no actual malice behind it.
“What’s going on, guys?” Robin asks.
“She never got hit in the neck by one of these things,” Steve announces to the group, still staring at your wounds.
“Then how does she have that?” Eddie asks, not connecting the dots.
“Steve did.” Nancy points out, looking between your wound and his.
“They’re identical.” Robin gasps, a small smile coming to her face despite the dire situation.
“Soulmates,” Nancy confirms, a smirk resting on her lips. You grimace.
“Now is not the time to--”
“The black eye, too. You had your suspicions earlier, didn’t you?” Steve asks you lowly, taking a step closer to you. The others get the hint and go to the other side of the rock to give you guys a little privacy.
“I didn’t know…” you murmur, looking down at your feet.
“Nancy always says you’re the best detective she knows.” He chuckles, lifting your chin again but this time only to look into your eyes.
“Okay, so maybe I had my suspicions, but I… I don’t know, I guess I didn’t want to believe it?” You ask more than state, letting out a small sigh.
“What, is being with me such a horrible thing to think about?” Steve teases. You smile.
“No, I just didn’t want to start falling for someone I barely know. I didn’t want to be soulmates with practically a stranger.” You admit.
“Then let’s get to know each other. Starting now. We don’t have to be anything romantic until after we get to know each other, but…”
“But what?”
“Can I kiss you?” He asks suddenly, reaching out a hand to gingerly touch your cheek.
“...yes.” You breathe out, not daring to say no as his skin against yours leaves you feeling electricity.
Without another word, Steve leans in closer before he closes the gap and presses his lips to yours. Your lips mold together perfectly and your arms wrap around his neck as his go around your waist. You lean into him and find peace in the midst of everything going on around you.
And at this moment you know that in spite of the upside down and the crazy creatures it may throw at you, you have found your soulmate, and no one is taking him away from you. Ever.

Ever.

“Hi, how can I help you today?” You smile brightly at the girl who has just walked into Family Video.
“Oh, I was just looking for…” The girl trails off as her eyes skim over the long aisles of movies that cover the store.
“A movie?” Steve deadpans from behind you, walking up to the counter next to you. He leans over the counter, his forearms pressed into the glass to peer at the girl who has not stopped scanning the store.
“Any movie in particular?” You nudge Steve, trying to get him to play nice. He chuckles and looks over at you, a smirk on his face with a glint in his eye.
“No, nothing in particular besides maybe something,” she finally turns back to look at you and Steve, her eyes catching on the latter, “scary.”
“Oh, that section will be over there.” Steve points to the far right corner of the floor, not once recognizing the girl’s stare. Or, at least, not acknowledging it.
“Perfect… thanks. I’m Lisa, by the way.” She says, smiling coyly as she turns to go to the scary movie section.
Once Lisa is out of earshot, you turn to Steve.
“You might have your game back, Harrington.” You snort, even though you actually hate every second of this. Yes, you have a crush on your best friend. No, it’s not cliche, and no you’ll never tell him. He’s tried to hit on way too many girls that have come into this store, there is no way this will be any different and there is no way that he has any feelings for you. Not like that.
“You’re crazy. You think she was flirting with me?” He scoffs, turning around so that his back is against the counter, elbows leaning back on it.
“I don’t think so, I know so. Did you see the way she looked at you? Literally bedroom eyes personified.” You slap his arm, pushing away from the counter to go to the computer where the store’s inventory is listed. You scan through the scary movies to see which ones are in stock.
“Which one do you recommend?” You hear Lisa’s voice at the counter again, and you turn around to see her leaning up over the counter this time as Steve tries to talk to her. If Steve so much as glances down, he’ll see right down her shirt and you know she’s doing that on purpose.
“Well, um, I guess…” Steve puts a hand on his neck, nervously looking anywhere but at her. You decide to intervene. Maybe he’s just nervous and doesn’t want to come off as being a douchebag guy that uses women for their bodies, maybe he really likes this girl. Either way, though, she seems like nothing but trouble.
“I recommend Friday the 13th parts one through five,” you pipe up, walking over to meet them at the counter again, “part six is set to come out in August so you should watch the series to get caught up on it before the newest part premieres.”
“That’s… really good advice, actually.” Steve smiles at you, a silent thank you for saving him in the situation.
“Yeah? Is there any…nudity in any of the films?” She bats her eyelashes, looking up at Steve through them.
“Well, I actually haven’t watched any of them, so I don’t know--” Steve starts, but he’s cut off by Lisa’s gasp.
“You haven’t watched any of them? They’re so good, you should totally see them. Say, do you have anything going on tonight?” Lisa grins at him, finally pushing off from practically laying on the counter.
“Oh, I’m actually…busy tonight, but thanks for the offer.” Steve looks at you, giving you a look. You catch his eye and read the expression he’s giving: I do not like this chick.
“Yeah, we’re both busy working all day and into the night. Long shifts, you know.” You joke with the girl, and Steve joins in to laugh awkwardly with you.
“What about this weekend?” Lisa hums, twirling a piece of blonde hair between her fingers as she stares Steve down.
“I’m…busy then, too.” Steve gulps, severely uncomfortable under her intense gaze. You swear you see a trickle of sweat fall down his forehead.
“Doing what?” Lisa lifts an eyebrow to stare at him, almost as if challenging him and his unknown plans.
“He’s going on a date.” You blurt out.
Steve turns to stare at you, and the girl even tears her gaze away from him to look at you as well.
“A date?” Lisa asks, narrowing her eyes at you.
“Y-Yeah! A date.” Steve agrees, turning back to look at her while giving you a thumbs up behind the counter where she can’t see.
“With who?” She frowns, her hand dropping from her hair to rest on her hip.
“With--” You try to respond, but Steve beats you to it.
“With her.” Steve points at you. Your eyes go wide and you try not to let your jaw drop at his casual lie.
“Really?” Lisa almost looks like she doesn’t buy it.
“Really.” As if to set the lie in stone, Steve sidles up next to you and grabs your hand in his. You feel the heat rise to your cheeks at his gesture and try not to let it show on your face.
Lisa’s eyes pause on you as she sizes you up and tries to decide if you’re an actual threat or not.
“He’s not interested in you, floozy. Get lost.” You glare at her, standing your ground for both you and Steve despite being so flustered at the same time. Her nostrils flare and her lips pucker into a grimace.
“Whatever.” She flips her hair and walks away for a moment to most likely grab a movie.
“What was that?” You whisper-yell at Steve.
“I don’t know! I just thought of it on the spot! It worked, didn’t it? Stop yelling at me!”
“I’m not yelling at you! I’m whispering!”
“You’re whisper yelling! That’s not fair!”
“How is it not fair--”
“Excuse me?” Lisa’s back, an annoyed look on her face. If looks could kill, well, you wouldn’t be dead but you might be mildly beat up or something.
“Oh, sorry, we’ll ring that up for you.” Steve clears his throat and rings up her movies, taking her payment and sliding them across to her once he finishes.
“Between you and me, lover boy, if you want more of a…I don’t know, woman. Or at least some more fun, then you can call me anytime.” Lisa slides her landline number across the counter to Steve and smiles suggestively at him.
“No.” Steve frowns. Her smile drops into confusion.
“No?” She asks.
“No.” He repeats, leaving behind the counter to stand in front of her.
“Steve--”
“You are not half the woman she is, and you could never hope to be. (Y/n) is the most incredible, selfless, funny, caring individual ever and you need to apologize to her.” Steve’s face has gone slightly red as he rants to Lisa.
“Steve this isn’t neces--”
“It is, (Y/n). Lisa, you cannot disrespect my girlfriend like that and expect me to stand by and not react. You might think you’re more fun because you’re the type of fun that most guys want so they can use you before discarding you, but that’s not me. That will never be me, not anymore. (Y/n) is the type of fun where I can stay up all night hearing her jokes and watching movies with her and never once want to go home or wish that I was somewhere else. She is the type of fun that I can be around twenty-four-seven, and I am so lucky to be with her and to be around her all the time. She is the type of fun that I want to spend the rest of my life with, not some one-night stand that I’ll forget about tomorrow. So, yeah. Once you grow up and realize what a real woman is, then maybe you’ll find a man who wants you and who will appreciate your worth fully. But that man is not me, and that time is not now. Goodbye.”
Lisa has tears in her eyes before he’s even finished, and as soon as he’s done talking, she runs out of the door.
“Steve…” You trail off, not really knowing what to say next. Did he seriously mean all of those things? The way that he said them, he had to have….
And did he call you his girlfriend?
“Sorry, I got carried away. You don’t think I was too harsh, do you?” He smiles sheepishly at you, coming back behind the counter again.
“Well, I don’t know…maybe the whole use and discarding bit was sort of uncalled for, but it wasn’t exactly wrong. I feel only a little bad,” you say truthfully.
“Yeah…” Steve agrees, but you can tell that his mind is elsewhere.
“Steve?” You gather up the courage to get a little closer to him, standing next to him at the counter again.
“Yeah?” He snaps out of his trance, looking down at you.
“Did you mean all of that?” You almost whisper, not daring to look at him as you do so.
“Of course I do. You mean everything to me, (Y/n).” He responds.
“Like…in a romantic way?” You breathe out, heart hammering at your own accusation.
“Oh…I…” Steve swallows hard and averts his gaze.
You knew it. How could you have been so stupid, to think he felt the same after all this time? It was just to get the girl to go away. He only likes you as a friend.
“Yeah. In a really romantic way.” Steve’s laugh is breathy and barely there as he turns to look at you again. Your head snaps to stare at him with wide, awe-struck eyes.
“Seriously? You- you like me?”
“A bit more than that (Y/n).” Steve chuckles, but you can see a tinge of red on his cheeks as he admits this.
“Like like me?”
“Love, (Y/n). I love you.”
“You…” You trail off, the reality sinking in.
“Do you…?” Steve asks, not daring to actually finish the question.
“Y-Yes! I mean- yes. I love you, too, Harrington.” You giggle, not really comprehending the full situation but being elated nonetheless.
“Great. Awesome. I… that’s… perfect.” Steve nods, a big smile on his face as he stares off into space.
“Um-”
“Movie? Uh, this weekend? A date?” He asks, looking over at you with his wide smile and bright eyes.
“You mean the date we technically already have planned?” You laugh, looking up at him.
“Right. Yeah. That’s the one.” He chuckles, eyes flickering from your eyes to your lips.
“Sounds like a plan, Steve. I’d love to go on a date with you.” You lean in slightly, breath hitching in your throat as the two of you draw closer to each other.
“...Perfect.” He smiles, brushing your noses together before--
“Get back to work!” Your boss walks in and shrieks at the two of you, causing you to jump apart and skittishly start working on nothing in particular. You glance sideways at Steve, who is already looking at you. You both laugh and continue working, grins splitting your faces.
You’re just two lovestruck idiots trying to navigate a weird world with even weirder people in it, but honestly, what’s better than that?

“Steve--”
