Chapter 3: Dr. Death Defying.
Loud, intense laughs wake Red up after a long and deserved rest. She’s on a mattress, covered with her own jacket. The room around her is dark, except for a little window up on the wall right in front of her. This must have been the warehouse. The laughs keep coming from the nearest room separated only by a thick wood door, torn on the angles. The girl slowly gets up, testing her body functions. When she touches the ground with her feet, her legs tremble slightly, probably due to the fact she’s been laying for a while. The pain she felt on the side is now gone, replaced by a numb feeling. When she raises the green tank top she’s wearing, she notices a patch right where the sleeping bullet hit her. After putting on her boots, she slowly opens the door, almost shyly as it could seem to some, but it’s actually just caution.
While she was sleeping, her mother appeared in her dreams.
“My baby,” she said, her voice kind and gentle, like she had always had, “you changed so much, my baby”.
Changed. That word lingers in Red’s mind, in her ears, appears in front of her eyes with neon lights, fireworks and a bold font. She has changed, and the trust she once had for the humans, has vanished, enslaved by revenge.
The Killjoys raise their heads and look at her, a smile that lingers on their faces, a sparkle in their eyes, marked by the sunlight coming from the big window of the Diner.
“Red, good morning” Jet Star breaks the silence as he raises his mug. “Coffee?”
Red scrutinizes him, from head to toe, just to shake her head and look away. She definitely won’t die because of poisoned coffee.
“Alright…” says the curly, turning his head towards Kobra and shrugging his shoulders, a little offended. The other rests his hand on the man’s shoulder and reassures him, “It takes time”.
Red, pretending not to hear them, looks around the Diner, finally able to actually tell where she is. The room they’re in is big and spacious, probably the one that was enabled to welcome the guests. She imagines it full of chairs and tables and people talking, eating and having fun with their friends. When was the last time it happened to her? When was the last time it happened at all? The apocalypse took everything, even the good times, the memories. At the end of the room there are two red couches, dirty and scruffy. A big window that takes a good part of the principal wall. “Great place to hide from Draculoids”, she thinks. Next to the guys, a large metal table, the one they laid her on when she fainted, and behind them a long counter full of utensils: guns, masks, cutlery, papers…
“So? What do you think about our poor home?” asks Fun Ghoul with his usual smile.
“Interesting” she answers. It’s the first word she said without screaming, crying or menacing, and that’s what makes everyone smile.
“What?” Red turns towards the four.
“Nothing…”. Each of them mutters an incomprehensible excuse, looking everywhere but her.
When Red sits on top of the table, Poison looks at her, noticing once again her pale skin and thin body.
“You have to eat” now magically serious, “or you’ll faint within an hour”. They hurry to take a piece of bread with a slice of cheese, then give it to her.
“Oh-oh you are, you’re just too stubborn to accept something from us. Cures, food, protection…”. Red glares at them.
“You think you’re all so kind, right? You think it’s easy to accept something from just anyone?” she spits out, getting closer and closer to the redhead. Poison doesn’t back off and doesn’t lower their eyes. Void is everything they can see in Red’s. They say the eyes are the window of the soul, but hers are two barriers.
“Eat, Red”. Poison’s voice is now softer, but to Red it’s so far that everything she hears is an order. She doesn’t touch the bread.
While the Killjoys discuss their next move, looking at the map of Battery City, a pain hits Red in her side once again.
“Fuck” she mutters with gritted teeth. She’s stuck here until she’ll feel better. She can’t go out there in these conditions, luckily she understands this.
“Red? Are you okay?” asks Poison, raising their head from the map.
“Yes” she answers quickly. Obviously, after this lame answer, the four all get up from the pavement and gather around her on the couch.
“Let me see” Kobra gently takes her hand away from her side to see the wound.
"Disinfectant” he orders, and his sibling immediately gets him. Red hisses when the acid substance hits her raw skin, and searches for something to hold onto. She finds Poison’s arm and grabs it, without even realizing it. Without saying a word, they let the girl ground herself, her eyes closed tightly.
When she feels the stickiness of a new patch, she opens her eyes.
“There we go. Done” Kobra says with a reassuring smile. “As good as new”.
Red slowly lets out a breath she didn’t know she was holding and immediately releases Poison’s arm, the latter smiling proudly, without her noticing.
It’s at this moment that a little radio set on the table starts crackling.
“They’re working!” Ghoul jumps on his feet to grab the object “The batteries work!” He grabs the radio with fervor and quickly comes back, sitting with the others, a big, genuine smile on his lips.
“Good job, man” Poison says proudly, patting his friend on the shoulder.
The radio stabilizes and a masculine, lively voice fills the room.
“Look alive, sunshine. 109 in the sky, but the pigs won't quit. You’re here with me, Dr. Death Defying. I’ll be your surgeon, your proctor, your helicopter, pumping out the slaughtermatic sounds to keep you alive. A system failure for the masses. Anti-matter for the master plan. Louder than God’s revolver and twice as shiny. This one’s for all of you rock’n’rollers, all you crash queens and motor babies. Listen up!”.
“What’s happening?” Red asks, confused. No one answers, completely raptured by the voice.
“The future is bulletproof, the aftermath is secondary. It’s time to do it now and do it loud. Killjoys, make some noise!”.
“How do they know-?”. Before Red can finish her sentence, her eyes fall on Star and Kobra looking into each other's eyes. A stupid smile on their faces, slightly red cheeks, breathing a bit ragged.
“He said ‘make some noise’ not ‘kiss some boys’!” Poison explodes, shaking their head, but a little smile appears on their lips as they hear a wheeze coming from behind. Red covers her mouth and turns away to hide from the others.
“See? Everyone loves gays” Jet Star laughs with a bit of pride, leaving a soft kiss on his boyfriend’s head.
Red quickly comes back together, but inside the only thing she can think about is “cute”.
“Well, it’s our moment!” Poison jumps, slightly agitated, as they wear their yellow mask.
Fun Ghoul takes Red by the hands and gets her on her feet, so quickly she doesn’t even realize what’s happening.
“Take it easy, Ghoul!” Kobra yells, putting on his motor helmet. “She still has to recover”.
“Oh, don’t listen to him” Ghoul giggles.
“We’ll show you how it’s done over here” Poison echoes their friend, as they give Red back her knives, winking.
“Ready to make some noise?”
