Germans Try Mumbai’s Iconic Vada Pav – Their Reaction is Priceless!
Ditching Luxury for the Real Mumbai ✨🚶♂️🇮🇳
I had the pleasure of guiding incredible guests from London and Singapore, but what made it truly memorable was my London guests—Tata Group executives who have been living in Mumbai for the past five months.
Instead of experiencing the city from the comfort of their company-provided luxury cars, they wanted something different. They wanted the real Mumbai—the bustling streets, the hidden chai stalls, the vibrant chaos, the local trains, and the heart of the city that only a true Mumbaikar knows.
Walking through the soul of Mumbai with them, seeing their excitement at every turn, and watching them embrace the city's raw beauty was an absolute joy. These are the moments that make hosting so special—the moments where people step out of their bubbles and truly connect with a place.
Here’s to more authentic journeys and real adventures! 💛✨
St. Thomas Cathedral, Mumbai: A Colonial-Era Gem in the Heart of the City
Nestled in the bustling Fort area of Mumbai, St. Thomas Cathedral stands as a symbol of the city’s colonial past and rich spiritual heritage. Built during the British rule, this Anglican church is not just a place of worship but also a historical landmark that has witnessed the transformation of Mumbai from a trading post to a modern metropolis.
Fascinating Facts About St. Thomas Cathedral
1. The Oldest Anglican Church in Mumbai
St. Thomas Cathedral was the first Anglican church built in Mumbai. Its foundation stone was laid in 1676, but it was left incomplete for several years. The church was finally consecrated on Christmas Day, 1718, making it over 300 years old.
2. A Part of Mumbai’s Colonial History
The cathedral was built by the British East India Company to cater to the spiritual needs of the growing English population in Bombay (now Mumbai). It played a crucial role in the early colonial administration, serving as a central place for British officers and traders.
3. Named After St. Thomas the Apostle
The church is dedicated to St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who is believed to have traveled to India in the 1st century CE to spread Christianity.
4. Stunning British Architecture
The cathedral showcases beautiful Neo-Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. The grand arched windows, intricate woodwork, and marble plaques make it a remarkable example of British-era design in Mumbai.
5. Home to Historical Memorials
Inside the cathedral, you’ll find numerous memorial plaques and tombstones dedicated to British officers, soldiers, and civilians who lived and died in colonial Bombay. These inscriptions offer a glimpse into the lives of early settlers and their struggles.
6. Recognized for Its Heritage Value
St. Thomas Cathedral was awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Award in 2004, recognizing its historical and architectural significance. It remains one of Mumbai’s best-preserved colonial landmarks.
7. A Serene Escape in the Heart of Mumbai
Amidst the chaos of Mumbai’s financial district, St. Thomas Cathedral provides a quiet sanctuary for visitors. The peaceful ambiance inside the church contrasts sharply with the busy streets outside, making it a perfect spot for reflection and relaxation.
Why Visit St. Thomas Cathedral?
If you're a history lover, architecture enthusiast, or spiritual seeker, St. Thomas Cathedral is a must-visit in Mumbai. It offers a blend of history, culture, and tranquility—a rare find in this vibrant city.
🧺 Dhobi Ghat: Mumbai’s Hidden World of Washers 🌊
Tucked between Mumbai’s towering skyscrapers and chaotic streets lies Dhobi Ghat, the world’s largest open-air laundry—a place where history, hard work, and resilience come alive. For over 140 years, this bustling space has been home to 7,000+ dhobis (washermen and women), who, with practiced hands, scrub, beat, rinse, and dry thousands of clothes daily.
✨ Did You Know?
🔹 Dhobi Ghat holds a Guinness World Record for being the largest open-air laundry, processing over 100,000 pieces of clothing every day—all washed by hand!
🔹 The word “dhobi” comes from Hindi, meaning washerman, and many families have passed down this craft for generations.
🔹 Even in an age of high-tech laundromats, 80% of Mumbai’s hotels, hospitals, and homes still rely on Dhobi Ghat for spotless laundry.
🔹 Each dhobi has their own washing stone, marking system, and secret techniques, ensuring every piece finds its way back to its owner.
Beyond the clotheslines and the rhythmic splashes of water, Dhobi Ghat is a living legacy of Mumbai’s unstoppable spirit. It’s not just about laundry—it’s about the hands that keep the city fresh, one wash at a time.
So next time you’re near Mahalaxmi, take a moment. Watch the dhobis at work, listen to the stories in the splashes, and appreciate the artistry behind every clean shirt you see.

So here’s the story of how I ended up hosting a very German family reunion on the streets of Mumbai. It all started when this lovely couple from Berlin booked my tour. Now, with Germans, there’s one golden rule: arrive early. So, naturally, I got to the meeting point a full half-hour ahead. Surprise, surprise—they were already waiting for me! Germans and their punctuality, I tell you.
After some greetings and the usual “Guten Tag,” the lady drops a little bombshell: “Oh, by the way, there’s a surprise guest joining us today!” Before I could even guess, she whips out her phone and shows me a photo. And who do I see? Philip! An incredibly amazing guy I had hosted on a Mumbai tour just two months ago.
Turns out, Philip’s currently doing a one-year stint at the German embassy here in Mumbai. And no, Philip didn’t come alone, he brought reinforcements—his brother and his brother’s girlfriend. Before I knew it, there they all were, hugging and kissing each other like it was a Bollywood reunion scene, right in the middle of Mumbai’s bustling streets.
Philip’s parents had flown in from Berlin to “inspect” how their son was surviving Mumbai’s chaos. And let me tell you—Philip? He’s practically a Mumbaikar now. In just two months, the guy’s figured out where to find the best non-spicy food (a true skill here), and he even knows how to tackle Mumbai’s rush-hour madness like a pro. Oh, and his mom? Absolute gem. She casually told me she loves Mumbai’s local trains. Why? “The doors are open, and there’s so much fresh air!” Only a German could see Mumbai’s locals as a scenic ride.
By the end of the day, the whole family had fallen for Mumbai’s charm—the people, the energy, the endless surprises. As for me? I’m meeting Philip again in a few weeks during the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival. Now, who’s next for a family reunion in the streets of Mumbai? Bring it on! 🙌🏾🇮🇳
