Just Another Mundane

Tyler Hale, 16, that smart kid who is completely ordinary.

"The only person that is allowed to call me ‘Little Red’ is Dad, and no one else.” Kat said annoyed. She hated it when people around the Institute called her that. The last guy who called her ‘Little Red’ walked out of the trainings room with a bleeding nose five minutes ago. Katerina was looking at him. “I told him three times not to call me that and no, I won’t apologize! He didn’t listen so he has to deal with the consequences now!”

"That really sucks for him.." Tyler said, watching the man walking away from the training room. "I think I saw tears, yup, there were definitely tears there. I know now that it's best not to cross you," he smirked, still trying to watch the man.

Tyler sat in the empty training room, his back against the wall, completely engrossed in his new book. He hardly noticed the person that had joined him.

“Oh, hey, can I help you?”

"Hey, champ. I hardly see you, anymore. What’ve you been up to?" Veronica piped in brightly, fortunate to have finally found Tyler perfectly alright. Lately, she’s been missing Tyler from peripheral view and it only worried her. She knew how extremely curious the kid could be.

"Oh, hey Vee," Tyler smiled at the sight of his sister. He didn't realize how much he had actually missed her, only going a few days without really seeing each other. It was nice to have familiar company. "I'm, uhm, training," he started, "my mind, that is," he held up the book in his hand.

Ahh, a fellow reader, Tyler thought. It was nice that he wasn’t the only one who seemed to enjoy reading in the training room as apposed to actual training, though he did feel a little uncomfortable having someone else in the room. “Some demonology thing,” he said, looking down at his book, “What about you?”

She looked down over the book in her hands, somehow she was embarrassed to admit she’s been reading about steeles and how can they affect downworlders if used against them. “Er, it’s about steeles. Very mundane, right?” she pursed her lips. “So, a demonology book. Quite the choice of book for someone like you.”

"Oh steeles... Steeles are cool, not really a topic of interest to me, but cool none-the-less," Tyler shrugged, holding his own book to his chest. "It's only some light reading, and I'm discovering it doesn't go as in-depth as I would like it to. Just familiarizing myself with all that is out there."

Tyler grinned as he recognized the girl as his friend. “Hi, Lena!” he chimed happily. There weren’t many people that he felt comfortable with here. But Lena was just different, though Tyler didn’t really know why. He closed the book, joining the girl. “What’re you up to?”

Lena smiled as she thought it would never leave. She knew nobody here, and even though it was easy for her to make new ones.. Old ones were always better. “I- umm.. I got a hobby? I guess?” Lena said looking at the pile of knifes on the metal table. “I come here everyday an- what are you doing here?” She said with a light grin, eyeing her friend.

"At least you got something. Wish I was good at those fighting things." he touched one of the knives on the table, but pulled away to lift up his book. "Reading, I'm just reading. A training room probably isn't the best thing to use as a reading nook, but I don't really care. It's quiet when no one else is here, I like it."

Tyler sat in the empty training room, his back against the wall, completely engrossed in his new book. He hardly noticed the person that had joined him.

“Oh, hey, can I help you?”

Tessa hadn’t realize she had company until someone spoke in the empty room.  ”Oh, I didn’t realize this room was occupied,” Tessa smiled. I came to do some reading, she gestured to the book in her hands. “But what are you doing here all alone?” she settled beside him.

"Oh," he spoke, surprised someone else wanted to read here, "I don't mind you reading in here, if you don't mind me doing the same," he held up the book for the other to see. "I didn't realize the training room was such a popular reading spot."

He looked from the girl, to her brownies and back to the girl before he decided to take one. He noticed she was munching on one herself, so they couldn’t have been poisoned, and she just looked like a nice enough girl. “Thanks,” he said, giving a little smile before taking a bite.

Amelia liked him the moment he took a brownie from her. Most times, the people here rejected her food. “You’re welcome.”  She continued munching on hers and smiled back. “How do you like them? They’re great, yeah?” She had a feeling she wasn’t going to get tired of having this boy around.

Tyler chewed slowly, analyzing the brownie as he did. They weren't bad, actually, they were quite good. Was that marshmallow he tasted? He liked marshmallow. "Yeah, they're pretty nice. You did a good job." he said, his mouth full as he finished off the brownie.

"Hey, I never said I knew everything, just that I knew more than you would think. There’s a difference." he scoffed. "Sorry if I seem.. rude.. I just, people tend to underestimate you when they find out you’re only a mundane, ya know? —Well.. I guess I could.. No harm in trying, right?"

"You’re right." She said, laughing. "No, it’s alright. —- I understand what you mean." Kat laughed. "Come on, then. It won’t be that hard. —- Especially not when we start with something easy. Have you laid your eyes on something special?"

Tyler looked around to the various weapons scattered around the room. So many options, but none of them seemed to spike his interest. "I haven't tried anything out.. Besides, I wouldn't know where to start anyways," he sighed, looking back at Kat, "You got any suggestions?"

Lena walked in the training room and went right into the table where the knifes were set. She was annoyed that she couldn’t make a shot and the pressure was on her. Why? She didn’t know- but she had to get her mind on something other than blood and this, this was getting her mind off it. She jumped when she heard a voice behind her as the blonde jumped and turned around to see a familiar face. 

  "Tyler?"

Randomly taking a seat, Cassidy folded her sleeves up before noticing the person not far from her. “Oh, I didn’t see you there. I was just catching up with my reading,” she held up the book in her hand. “what’re you reading, buddy?” her voice echoing on the empty hall.

Tyler kicked himself for not recognizing the vampire sooner. He could see it now, but this one just seemed nicer than the other vampires he had come across. “I’m sure you’ll be able to find that cat eventually,” he said, “Hey, It’s good to know that there’s someone else who doesn’t do the whole training thing. And I’m Tyler. It’s, uh, good to meet you Matt. “

“I hope so, I’m really craving a cigarette right now which is really annoying,” Matt laughed before sighing to  himself. He stepped over to Tyler with a grin, “Nice to meet you too, and take my word for it it’s not only the two of us. Do you want to give me a hand looking for Church? You can always tell your sister I  dragged you into it.”

Tyler laughed and nodded, fiddling with the closed book in his hand. He finally stood up. "Yeah, I think I can lend a hand. And any excuse not to train is an excuse that I shall use. So, where does this Church cat usually like to hide? The kitchen, maybe?"

"I’m curious.. What’s it like… You know, to never age. Must be really weird. Do you get bored with it? I think I’d get bored with it." he reached his hand for the sword on the ground, touching the cold metal with his fingertips. He wished he knew how to use it, but reading had never taught him. "I’m here, pretending to train to please my sister," he told her with a slight tone of annoyance sprinkled in. "Now, if you don’t mind.." he grabbed his book again, turning to the page he left off at.

"Why weird? And why would I get bored with it? I mean, I’m at the peak of my beauty and health. Forever. What’s not to like about that?” She asked him incredulously. “I’m here, because my best friend thought it would be a good idea.” She told him, nodding. “But you know, I don’t really need this.” She gestured to the sword. “I have these.” Gwen bared her fangs at him. “So there’s this obvious difference between us,” The girl stepped forward and grabbed the book out of the boys hands, throwing it aside. “And instead of reading, you should train, if you don’t want to be the first one getting killed in a fight.” Gwen told him with a wink, a grin gracing her lips.

"Yeah I guess those are some pretty nice perks. Imagine how many books one could read I being immortal! You'd run out of good ones eventually, certainly not the life for me," he stated flatly. He flinched at the sight of the vampires fangs, hoping she wouldn't notice that they did scare him the tiniest bit. "Hey!" he scrambled as she snatched his book away and discarded it to the side. "Yeah, I probably should train, but what does it matter to you?"

"Running? Oh geeze," he said, pushing himself up. "Okay, then.. I just run around the room? Uhm.. well.. here goes nothin’," he started jogging around the room, feeling awkward as he was watched. Keeping his steps steady, he continued his jog until he had completed a couple of laps. "Is that it, then?"

"You’ve only been running for five minutes, you can stop in ten minutes. Think about a book character who went through training, that helped me."

With a sigh Tyler continued his jog. After a couple more minutes and a couple more laps Tyler stopped in front of the girl, trying to hide the fact that he was already out of breath. "Well, I think I can take it from here, thanks.."

She lightly smiled. When her father died, she didn’t train for a whole year, and she read books to try to live another life. He kind of reminded her of herself. “That’s why you’re here, to learn how to do the fighting thing. You should start by running a bit to warm up.”

"Running? Oh geeze," he said, pushing himself up. "Okay, then.. I just run around the room? Uhm.. well.. here goes nothin'," he started jogging around the room, feeling awkward as he was watched. "I turn 18 every year." She told him facetiously, not wanting to reveal her real age. "Oh, you won’t believe how many times I’ve heard that," Gwen looked up to the mundane, fixing him with her eyes, "And proved them wrong." She told him with a sneer. At the answer of the boy, Gwen let out a laugh, dropping the sword to her side. "Well, why are you here then?" She asked him with the raise of one eyebrow.

"I'm curious.. What's it like... You know, to never age. Must be really weird. Do you get bored with it? “Vampire, I’ve died already there’s not much else smoking can do to me anymore,” he pointed out to the kid with a small shrug, “It’s a bad habit I know, it helps me keep my mind distracted.” He looked at the kid and gave him a dismissive wave, “On the topic of training, you’re not the only one who doesn’t keep up with their training so relax. I’m Matt by the way.”

Tyler kicked himself for not recognizing the vampire sooner. He could see it now, but this one just seemed nicer than the other vampires he had come across. "My Dad’s the Consul and my Mom kinda does his job here if he’s gone." She explained. "I guess it’s pretty hard.." Kat shrugged. "Trust me, just because you know everything that’s in the book, doesn’t mean you know really everything. There’s a lot more that’s not in the books. —- But you got a point there.” She smiled. “Well, I could show you some tricks, if you want?” The ginger offered.

"Yikes, fair enough. If I see her I won’t tell her," Matt said, wandering around the room and growling to himself. "Church isn’t my cat, he’s the Institute’s cat and he’s stolen my cigarettes."

"Yeah, she's going to be pissed at me anyways when she finds I haven't made any progress. I think I'll avoid her yelling at me for as long as I can," he laughed, setting his book to his side. "Sounds like a smart cat. He seems to know that smoking kills. He's only trying to protect you from yourself," he shrugged, a smile teasing the corners of his mouth.
