He doesn’t think it’ll happen to him. Literally. Figuratively? He’s not that deep. Maybe. It’s just one of those things he feels like it’s a waste of time pondering over when there are very real issues to be looking into.

It’s a little worrying when Mangetsu reacts like that, but it’s also strangely validating. After being publicly humiliated the way he had been, with practically nobody seeming inclined to take his side, it feels good to have someone on his side again.

Still… Suigetsu fidgets a bit. “Don’t go too far, okay? She’s not worth you getting in trouble over either.”

That’s all that really matters, right now. Only a day ago, he’d have been concerned for Lina – and he will never, ever tell his brother that he’d been wondering about the future and imagining someone vaguely Lina-shaped in his when he’d imagined a successful life – but being rejected so thoroughly has consequences.

In a twisted way, it’s almost merciful; he’s had one solid strike to cut those feelings down, rather than feeling them slip away a few painful little pieces at a time.

He barely pauses when washing up, just shrugging instead. How far’s too far anyway?

...How far indeed.

He’ll likely hear him out, but whether he’d do as told is another thing altogether. There’s no telling that Suigetsu would even find out when all is said and done-- maybe not for a few years.

Mangetsu rinses the rest of the dishes and loads them in the dishwasher. He’s not doing those by hand; that’s a lot of dishes.

“Remember Mai?” The girl Mangetsu had dated in high school before the thing with their mother happened. It’s been a while ago, nearly fifteen years now.

 Kasumi’s expression brightens–she’s practically beaming now in the shadow of the blade. It was almost like a dream to be holding one of the Seven Swords, more so to be given the chance to practice with it. If only her father could see her in this moment, but she’d keep everything hush from him for the meantime.

  “Ah, I believe it was in relation to a flower…Sakura maybe?” The name wasn’t set in deep enough, not having met the shinobi personally to justify her memory. She strengthened the posture he adjusted her for and gripped the blade handle more comfortably,”Who cares for Konoha women when Kirigakure’s got the like of me around!” Kasumi was not typically a person boasting with pride, but perhaps the Hozuki’s rubbed off on her more than she’d agree with.

   “Say, Mangetsu,” a sudden thought burrows into her mind like a parasite, young and hungry,”isn’t this kind of how every swordsman starts out–trained by the current successor? Do you think it’s possible we could find the missing swords?” She knew she wouldn’t ever take possession of Hiramekarei, but what of others like the Nubari? The Kabutowari? Maybe even reclaiming the Samehada to be within Kiri-hands again? It’s an idea that puts fire in her blood, motivation to achieve what had a bleak outlook. Ultimately, it’s a way to help he and his brother achieve their lifelong dream.

Sakura who? Oh right, one of those kids. About his brother’s age. Trained by the Sannin Tsunade and all that. Big deal; he didn’t give a hoot. She couldn’t land a hit on him anyway. So by the time Kasumi says the thing about ‘who cares Konoha women’, Mangetsu actually nods once. Who cares indeed.

But then she’s talking about training to be one of the Seven, and retrieving the lost swords. He can’t really tell her details, can he? Considering it’s a mission. So he answers her matter-of-factly. “Yep. Would be hella nice. Don’t think it’d be impossible, either. Jus’ gotta make it an official thing, get permission to set out of Kiri in search of ‘em.” Like he’s been doing for months.

He’s already retrieved Nuibari, Kubikiribocho and the Kiba blades for Kirigakure. That he’s done so has been a secret. Knowledge of the fact that Kirigakure was actively recovering what was once lost would only end in whoever had the swords now to hide them even better. And, given how many within Kiri’s ranks still needed to be thoroughly vetted to be trusted completely, there was no saying who among their own would end up impeding progress of the recovery mission.

But retrieving Samehada, though... “Gonna place a bet on who wins, me or Kisame?” Twisted, bittersweet memories, that. He’s always liked Kisame. Nice guy. But a traitor’s a traitor. Sure, he isn’t looking at things as black and white, but even so...

Mangetsu motions for Kasumi to lower Hiramekarei. He wants to show her something. Something she’s probably already seen in action, but it’s a different thing altogether when you had to experience it first hand.

“It’ll be fine. Not the first one I’ve got.” Suigetsu’s poking idly at his food. It takes him a while to eat anything. It takes him even longer to say anything.

“Y’know, when all that shit happened, she actually tried to claim she barely knew me?” Finally admitting to a bit more of what had happened back there. “Like… in front of everybody, outright told the ex I was just some buddy of her brother’s that’d come along for the free food’n shit.” Another vicious prod of his fork into the food on his plate. “Everybody heard her. Acting like I was just some loser friend her big bro picked up while he was out doing all the stuff that’s the reason he’s not the favourite. Not good enough for her, just another guy with big ideas.”

Twirling his fork between his fingers now. “Wasn’t just pretending to keep the peace, or she’d’ve pretended none of us were with her. I’m the only one she talked like that about.”

If Mangetsu dropped a dish into the sink, it wasn’t because it was too sudsy that it slipped. Uh, no. That’s him right there practically having thrown the dish in the sink after hearing that bit. It’s a good thing the dish is melamine, though. It’s not broken.

“The fuck?” He’s turning to face Suigetsu, carelessly wiping his soapy hands on his jeans.

Mangetsu pulls up a chair and sits opposite Suigetsu at the table. Sure, they’d struggled a bit in the past with money and things, had to worry about a roof over their heads, but things were fine now. Not good enough for Paris Hilton, apparently.

“Like I said.” He’s leaning forward. “That bitch didn’t deserve you.” Good for nothing cow who probably had no other skills she’d likely resort to selling sex tapes to get famous.

He hasn’t broken eye contact yet even after leaning back, gaze intense. He’s hatching a plan. “You forget that bitch a’ight? I’ll take care of the rest.”

Aha. Ahaha-- Just uh, abruptly getting up to do the dishes again. Take care of the rest, mhm. ...It’s not going to be good for this Lina person.

“Far as I can tell, yeah.” Suigetsu shrugs. “Seen him around ‘em a few times when you’re not there, he stays away from ‘em. Even ones just about any kid would be going over to pat.”

It’s not that he wants to sabotage his own chances of getting a dog… does he? Or make something out of what he wants and what Enkai wants conflicting… right? After all, he doesn’t resent the kid, not anymore.

Suigetsu sifts through his own motives, and has to accept that there is something a tiny bit petty there, even if most of it is the genuine concern that this isn’t going to work out.

“I don’t think he likes ‘em very much, all up,” he says, with complete honesty, concern completely overtaking that moment of pettiness.

It’s like he can’t win.

He doesn’t know what to tell his brother here. If Enkai truly was afraid of dogs, then they had a bit of a problem. He’s wondering if things would be different if they got a puppy and let Enkai grow up with it. He’s going to have to talk to the kid about this soon. Maybe tonight. 

Parents put their kids first, didn’t they? But... He’s also looking at his brother and... yeah...

He doesn’t want to have to choose.

If there’s a way they can work things out, that’s where he’ll be headed. So Mangetsu shrugs, expression blank, trying to hide the guilt.

“Let’s go see ‘em anyway. Maybe we can see if the kid’ll get used to a pup first. ...I’unno. M’gonna hafta talk to ‘im.”

Enkai’s going to have to face a lot more scarier things than dogs in the future.

That’s the first thing he wants to shout, and there are a lot of other things as well, but… that’s childish, and he’s not a little kid anymore.

Instead, he crawls out of bed, and comes to the door. He isn’t meeting Mangetsu’s eyes, and he’s so drawn that he looks about five years older, but he’s there.

“I’ll come down,” he mutters.

“Okay.” Ah jeez, that bitch really did it this time, didn’t she? He’s about ready to drive back there and do something stupid, but he fights back that idea. Nah, he’ll probably sit on it and plan out some long drawn out petty revenge instead.

But he heads downstairs anyway. Part of tonight’s date had been making dinner together. He’d eaten a bit with her, but they’d made plenty with Suigetsu in mind as well.

He doesn’t bother his brother with questions when the guy eventually comes down to eat, besides a casual: “Gotta make an appointment to get your eye checked out. M’free till noon tomorrow.”

“‘m fine, go talk to your girlfriend,” Suigetsu growls, his voice a little muffled because he has the covers pulled over his head. He’s been so wrapped up in his own feelings that he hasn’t even heard the taxi come and go.

“You got nothing to talk about here, so go on,” he adds, amplifying that last comment with more intensity.

He doesn’t want to see Mangetsu right now, or anybody else. All he wants is to stay here, in bed, by himself.

“She left.” Oh boy. They’re doing this again aren’t they?

He leans against Suigetsu’s door, arms crossed, ear pressed against the wood because well, his brother’s barely audible.

“Oi, come have dinner? There’s jelly an’ ice cream for dessert.” Pause. “...Want me to bring it up to ya?”
