It’s perhaps a little shocking to anyone who isn’t in at least semi-regular contact with her to see Natasha as gentle. Still, that’s what she is as she touches Matt’s shoulder and presses a light kiss to his cheek before she settles in her usual spot across from him. Back always to the wall, always aware of all potential entrances.

When going without her for a time, Matt forgets the parts of Natasha that are soft to the touch, that make him feel the comfort that has been missing from his life for so long. He forgets the parts of her that are flavored more like friend than like ally, and it’s good to feel them all at once. He’s comfortable in the way that he knows that she’ll watch his back, and in that he knows that she’s more than capable of the act. 

He laughs. “Not of late, but I’m sure another will come out of the woodwork soon. How’s the Avenger life? Still not boring you?”

It’s a regular patrol tonight, something Matt does nearly every night these days. There is no rest in the city, this city that never sleeps, and Matt is not invulnerable to the pull of the nightless life. He’s come across what seems like dozens of webbed thugs tonight, stuck to the walls of buildings with no other harm done to them, and he comes upon another one just as it’s happening. He can hear the webs shooting across some thug, painting the wall in a way that paints across Matt’s “vision,” as it was. Matt grits his teeth. 

“You just leave them like that?” he asks, knowing that his presence may very well be startling, but not really giving enough of a damn to make it less so.

  Matt doesn’t do the hang out with other heroes thing. It’s never been his gig, hanging out, calling himself a hero, calling himself a hero, any of it. The closest he gets is a weekly drink with the Widow from the Avengers, and only sometimes weekly; they both have lives. This is the first time he’s seen her in a month, but he smiles to see her anyway. 

“Natasha. How’ve you been?”
