Boston - Saint Patrick’s Clash, a night of fights and music on Saturday, March 19th at the House of Blues in Boston will feature 5 amazing title fights! Murphys Boxings own, undefeated Jr. Lightweight, Logan “Cotton” McGuinness (23-0-1 10KOs) has been added to the card and will fight Ruben Vicente for the vacant NABA Jr. Lightweight Championship. Logan is coming of a successful 2015, that saw him fight 3 times, keeping his undefeated record in tact with 3 wins. With a win on the 19th Logan looks to climb back into the WBA top ten ranking, a spot he’s familiar with, having been ranked #7 by the WBA before a year of inactivity due to injury caused him to be removed. Logan is a former 3 division NABA Champion, and looks to reclaim the title he originally won with a spectacular 11th round KO of Benoit Gaudet. With a solid 2015 and over a year removed from injury, 2016 looks to be the year the undefeated Logan challenges for a major world championship.
Also on the card will be Stephen “The Rock” Ormond (20-2 11KOs) who fights the main event against against Marcos ‘El Tigre” Jimenez (21-6 14KOs) for the Lightweight IBF Intercontinental Championship. With a win, Ormond would not only capture the IBF Intercontinental Championship, but would climb into the top 10 IBF World rankings and take another step closer to fighting for a major world championship. Ormond looks to be on track for a such fight, with the winner of the WBO Lightweight Championship fight between Champion Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews being the logical choice. Ormond already holds a win against the challenger Mathews and lost by a highly questionable disqualification to the champion Flanagan.
Murphy’s Boxing newest fighter, undefeated TJ “The Power” Doheny (14-0 10KOs) defends his PABA Super Bantamweight title against tough Gerardo Marin Hernandez (13-3-1 8KOs). Doheny looks to this fight as the start of his climb to the Super Bantamweight Championship of the world, in a hopeful all Irish bout against current IBF Champion Carl Frampton, a man Doheny has already beaten in the amateurs. Doheny a slick boxing southpaw from Ireland, with fast hands and knockout power is a perfect 14 wins in 14 fights, with 10 of those coming by way of KO.
Rounding out the amazing night of championship fights will be two New England title fights. A highly contentious New England lightweight championship fight between Carlos “The Dragon” Candelario (6-1 3KOs) and Matt Doherty (4-1-1 2KOs), which looks on paper to be an action packed fight. Both fighters are out to stake claim to being the best Lightweight in New England. Carlos, a fighter known for his large fan base, is a rising prospect with concussive power in both hands. With fight of the night potential, and fans of both fighters packing the House of Blues, this is one fight not to be missed.
Another New England title fight not to be missed, pits Murphys Boxings own Michael McLaughlin (11-1-1 5KOs) against veteran Shakha Moore of nearby Connecticut, in a battle for the New England Welterweight Championship. McLaughlin from Donegal, Ireland now residing in Dorchester Mass., not only looks to win the N.E. Championship in front of a legion of friends celebrating the Saint Patrick’s day weekend but to position himself for bigger fights. A professional since 2010, McLaughlin hopes to fight for an Irish Title by years end, while securing himself a top ten ranking.

One of the busier bantamweights in the sport, Doheny has fought 7 times in the last 16 months and looks to continue that trend when he makes his U.S.A, as well as Murphy’s Boxing debut, fighting on the massive March 19th Saint Patrick’s Clash fight card. Doheny will be defending his PABA title against an opponent to be named shortly, Doheny, a 5 time Irish amateur champion, who was born in Ireland and now resides in Australia, looks to make a splash in front of the large Irish contingent, on the always raucous St Patrick’s day weekend in Boston.
Boasting an undefeated professional record, Doheny also has an impressive amateur pedigree, having over 150 fights, winning 5 Irish Championships and beating IBF World Super Bantamweight Champion Carl Frampton. With this amateur and professional experience, Doheny and his manager believed that fighting in the U.S. and signing with Murphy’s Boxing would be the last 2 pieces that will lead to a World Championship. The Saint Patrick’s Clash will feature a 12 round title fight with our own Stephen “The Rock” Ormond (20-2 11KOs) against Marcos ‘El Tigre” Jimenez (21-6 14KOs) for the Lightweight IBF Intercontinental Championship. After a hugely successful 2015 campaign, Lightweight contender Stephen Ormond (20-2 11KO) will start what looks to be a promising new year with an 8 round fight on The Clash of Clans fight card, taking place February 6th at National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Stephen looks to build on his hugely successful 2015 campaign that saw him 1st make a splash in the boxing world with a highly disputed 10th round disqualification loss in February 2015 against current WBO world lightweight champion Terry Flanagan to running off three consecutive KO victories, with the last two coming in the United States on PBC and Murphy’s Boxing promoted fight cards.
With a win in February, against an opponent to be named, Ormond looks to position himself for a major fight in the Lightweight division. Ormond, the former WBO European lightweight champion seems to be natural fit to fight the winner of the upcoming WBO World Championship fight between champion Terry Flanagan, who Ormond lost a highly questionable disqualification loss and the challenger Derry Mathews, who Ormond owns a unanimous decision win against.

Candelario from Lawrence, Ma. is a Lightweight prospect with concussive power in both hands. He has amassed a record of 6-1 3KO, but since switching management after a highly questionable loss, he has put together a record of 3-0 with 2KOs. Carlos has had some minor set backs in his career due to injury and multiple fights falling through, but with Murphys Boxing as his new promoter, Carlos is ready to take major steps forward in his career. Having last fought in January 2015, winning a 6 round unanimous decision, Carlos and his legion of fans are excited to be coming back under the umbrella of Murphys Boxing. Carlos has been sparring with world class fighters in preparation for his return to the ring. With an electrifying style, a huge fan base to back him, as well as the tools and team around him, Carlos figures to advance into a national Lightweight contender by 2017.

Murphys Boxing is proud to announce that Spike O’Sullivan (22-1 15KOs) has signed to fight Chris Eubank Jr (20-1 15KOs), on December 12th at the O2 Arena in London, England. The fight will take place on the Anthony Joshua versus Dillian Whyte mega fight card and will be the WBA middleweight title eliminator, with the winner facing either WBA champion Danny Jacobs or Peter Quillin, who face off a week earlier on December 5th in Brooklyn, New York.
Spike, after years of doggedly chasing Eubank Jr, finally has the fight he has been looking for and he is primed to capitalize on it. Spike enters the ring on a roll of 5 straight KO wins. 2015 has been quite a year for Spike, he has fought 4 times, all in the U.S. and among others has a KO win at the mecca of boxing, Madison Square Garden in March, as well as KO wins on two separate PBC, Murphys Boxing promoted televised cards, in May and most recently on October 10th where he destroyed veteran David Toribio with a devastating 2nd round KO. Spike has also been sparring with former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor and comes into the fight with Eubank, supremely confidant.
The Spike versus Eubank Jr. fight is shaping up to be one of the most talked about fights in England in recent memory. With a true disdain for each other, both men will enter the ring with bad intentions. With a war of words well under way on social media, the fight only looks to intensify as the lead up continues. For his part, Spike doesn’t like Eubank, branding him arrogant and living off his fathers name. That father would be Chris Eubank Sr. the former WBO super middleweight champion, who in an ironic twist lost his title and two fights to the Celtic Warrior, Steve Collins who just happens to be the brother of Spike’s trainer Packie Collins.
Spike, the Cork, Ireland middleweight knows that Eubank Jr. is the one man standing in his way of a title shot and is fully focused on taking care of business on December 12th. “I can’t wait to get in the ring and knock Eubank out” said O’Sullivan. “With this fight being made a WBA eliminator, I will be world champion in 2016” added O’Sullivan.

MELROSE, MASS – This past Friday night, October 30th Murphys Boxing put on another great night of old school boxing as they hosted their second annual Monster Brawl, taking place at the Melrose Memorial Hall. Headlining the night was heavyweight Alexis Santos (15-1 13KOs). Santos, the hometown hero from nearby Lawrence, Mass, started the fight with an impressive display of power punches that seemed to instantly hurt his opponent Aaron Kinch. Santos continuously landed thudding right hands as Kinch looked to survive the early rounds. In the 5th round with Alexis in full control, he once again caught Kinch on the ropes and unleashed an onslaught of power punches. With the referee seemingly having seen enough, he stepped in and halted the action before Kinch could absorb anymore punishment. With the 5th round TKO win Alexis has positioned himself to fight some of the bigger names in the heavyweight division in 2016.
In the co main event, in a bout that kept half of Ireland laying awake, new fan favorite Stephen “The Rock” Ormond (20-2 11KOs) from Dublin Ireland, notched his 20th win, when he squared off against tough veteran Orlando Vazquez (18-7-1 12KOs). Invoking shades of Lightweight sensation Roberto Duran, Ormond absolutely steamrolled Vazquez from the opening bell. With a relentless body attack and an abundance of punches, Ormond continued to cut off the ring and as he dug in his punches from his crouched position, one could not help but to see the resemblance to past champion Roberto Duran. With Ormond’s energy at such a high pace, the crowd seemed to love every second of the fight. As the Dublin native entered the ring wearing a hockey mask, and Boston Bruins jersey, it was clear victory was on his mind. Although Vazquez came to fight, the pure volume and power of the punches he was taking insured that this would not go the distance. In the fourth round with Ormond once again cutting the ring, he dropped Vazquez with a picture perfect 3 punch combination prompting the ref to halt the match at 2:20 of the 4th round. With his 20th win, 2016 looks to be the year that Stephen Ormond fights for a Lightweight Championship of the world.
In other action, Local Stoneham fighter Greg Vendetti improved to (8-2-1 6KOs) with a 2nd round TKO. Vendetti, with a pack of supporters in attendance, continuously walked his opponent, Jordan Rosario (0-2) down, while landing crisp power punches. In round 2 of the 6 round Jr Middleweight bout, Vendetti, who is known for his quick and powerful punches finally caught Rosario against the ropes and with Rosario taking power shots and not defending himself, the ref was forced to call the fight. With a legion of fans and a pleasing come forward style, Vendetti looks to be a fighter to keep an eye on in the coming year.
Another local fan favorite, Aleksandra Lopes (14-3-2) faced Andria Wawro, making her pro debut. In the 6 round Female Super Welterweight bout Aleksandra once again used her superior boxing skills to win an unanimous decision winning all three judges scorecards by shutout. Aleksandra continues to impress as she looks to challenge for a world title.
Welterweights Chris Gilbert (13-3 10KOs) of Windsor VT, and Shakha Moore of Norwalk CT, fought an entertaining 6 round bout, that saw the two of them relentlessly lay into each other. With good back and forth action, the fight looked like it seemingly could of been a draw, but in the end was ruled an unanimous decision win for Moore.
Local Quincy fighter, Paddy Irwin (1-0 1KO) made his professional debut in a 4 round Super lightweight bout against Theo Desjardin. In the 1st round Paddy came out tentatively as he looked to see what his opponent Desjardin offered. By the 2nd round Paddy seemed relaxed and was swinging with intensity, catching Desjardin with a right hand that drove him to the canvas, where he was unable to get up before the ref counted him out. It was an impressive outing for the debuting Irwin.
Lightweights Matt Doherty (3-1-1 2KOs) and Briam Granado (1-1-1) battled to a 4 round draw. In a fight that a lot of the crowd thought should of gone to Doherty, both men seemed to think a rematch was in order.
Godson Noel opened the night with a 1st round TKO of Rodrigo Almeida in their 4 round Super Middleweight bout.
Monster Brawl 2 was another night of great fights, promoted by Murphys Boxing. Welterweight contender Danny O’Connor, as well as ranked Lightweight contender Ryan Kielczweski and undefeated Middleweight Mark DeLuca took in the action ringside, as well as one time Welterweight Champion of the world, Tony Demarco.

LOWELL, Mass. (October, 10 2015) - Brooklyn welterweight Gabriel "Tito" Bracero (24-2, 5 KOs) came into hostile territory and knocked out hometown favorite Danny "Bhoy" O'Connor (26-3, 10 KOs) only 41 seconds into the first round, headlining tonight's loaded Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBCSN card at historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Bracero, who handed O'Connor his first pro loss four years ago, used an overhand right that O'Connor, fighting out of nearby Framingham (MA) did not see coming. O'Connor was out cold before he hit the mat.
"I worked on that punch for six weeks," Bracero said after the fight. "In my last fight, I fought a southpaw and made some mistakes. I specifically worked on that punch because Danny's a southpaw. I slipped to the side and threw the right. This was the first time I went away to camp, away from my family.
"I'm just so humbled and grateful. I knew coming in here that all the pressure was on him (O'Connor); the crowd would try to take the beast out of me and put me on the defense. Everything is going to work out (regarding his next fight). I'll let Tommy Gallagher and Lou DiBella take care of my next fight. I'm ready to go right back in the gym."
O'Connor was taken by ambulance to the nearby Lowell General Hospital for observation.
Hometown hero "Irish" Micky Ward and National Hockey League Hall-of-Famer Bobby Orr was in attendance supporting the New England and Irish fighters. NBCSN analyst "Sugar" Ray Leonard returned to the same building in which he captured a National Golden Gloves Tournament title in 1973.
Undefeated Dominican super bantamweight KO artist Jonathan "Salomon King" Guzman (20-0, 20 KOs), fighting out of nearby Lawrence (MA), made it a perfect 20 fights, 20 KO wins via a ninth-round stoppage of a game Danny Aquino (17-3, 10 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature.
Guzman dropped Aquino, a Mexican native fighting out of Connecticut, in the second round. The badly hurt Aquino, however, lasted until the ninth round when Guzman ended the show with a brutal left hook. Aquino, another New England Golden Gloves champion who won his title in this very building, had never been stopped as a professional.
Quincy (MA) featherweight Ryan "The Polish Prince" Kielczweski (24-1, 7 KOs), who won two New England Golden Gloves championships at Lowell Memorial Auditorium, won a 10-round, hard fought decision over Brooklyn's Rafael "Dynamite" Vazquez (16-2, 13 KOs).
Kielczweski out boxed Vazquez in the first four rounds, but Vasquez came charging back and opened a cut over Kielczweski's right eye in the eighth and rocked the local fighter in the final 30 seconds of the fight The judges had Kielczweski winning the entertaining fight by scores of 97-93 twice and 96-94.

"I kind of started off slow, but in the middle rounds, I started putting my punches together, throwing four, five, six punches at a time and it was working. But he came back every time and started trading with me.

"He's a tough guy. I really needed that fight. "We knew he wasn't much of a volume pincher. It didn't surprise us when he came on in the middle rounds.
"The blood wasn't in my eye. I didn't know I was cut until the referee came over.
"I like to entertain in the ring. I don't need to do this. I do it because I like to fight and entertain.
"This was my favorite venue to fight in as an amateur. I fought here 10-15 times as an amateur."
RAFAEL VAZQUEZ:
"He was a slick fighter, he moved and he had great power. He was in great shape. He's young, I will be 38 this year. No excuse, I moved up to 126 pounds to face him, I'm 122 pounds.
"I thought I won the last three rounds. Especially the ninth and tenth round. The tenth round was big. He maybe connected ten punches in the whole round. I rocked him. I hurt him. But, we're fighting in his hometown, and I'm grateful to him for giving me the opportunity."
Undercard Polish heavyweight Adam Kownacki (12-0, 10 KOs), fighting out of Brooklyn, kept his undefeated record intact, turning in a workmanlike effort to win an eight-round unanimous decision (78-73 X 3) over Rodney Hernandez (8-3-1, 1 KO).
Irish junior lightweight Patrick "The Punisher" Hyland (31-1, 14 KOs), a 2012 Interim world featherweight title challenger, lived up to is nickname. The Dubliner dropped tough David "El Finito" Martinez (18-7-1, 3 KOs) once on his way to a one-sided fight that ended at 18 seconds of the eighth round when Hyland caught Martinez with a vicious left hook.
Irish middleweight champion Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan (22-1, 15 KOs) outclassed light heavyweight veteran David Toribio (21-16, 14 KOs) and ended the fight with a second-round knockout. Former European champion Stephen "The Rock" Ormond (19-2, 10 KOs) dropped former world title challenger Michael "Cold Blood" Clark twice en route to an opening round victory by knockout.

O’Connor will be seeking revenge for 2011 loss to Bracero in the 10-round main event, while Kielczweski faces the toughest test of his career versus Vasquez in their 10-round bout to open the NBCSN broadcast at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
In the other scheduled televised fight, undefeated Dominican super bantamweight KO artist Jonathan “Salomon King” Guzman (19-0, 19 KOs), fighting out of nearby Lawrence (MA), takes on Connecticut’s upset-minded Danny Aquino (17-2, 10 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature.
Boston vs. New York is a classic matchup that has dominated sports headlines in the northeast for years as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox waged countless wars while the New England Patriots faced the New York Giants in two Super Bowls and continued their longtime rivalry with the New York Jets. The rich tradition of this rivalry has also spilled into the ring as many top fighters from each region have faced-off over the years.
The first significant Boston vs. NYC fight goes back to 1927 at Yankee Stadium, when Jack Dempsey stopped Jack “The Boston Gob” Sharkey in the seventh round of their heavyweight title eliminator to challenge world champion Gene Tunney. Controversy surrounded this fight as Sharkey, a sailor in the U.S. Navy, fought his boxing idol, Dempsey, who along with Babe Ruth ruled Manhattan during America’s Golden Age of Sports in the 1920s. Sharkey out-boxed Dempsey for six rounds until, complaining to the referee about Dempsey’s low punches, he was knocked out cold with a picture-perfect left hook.
Another legendary heavyweight champion from the Boston area, Rocky Marciano, wouldn’t have retired with his famous 49-0 record if one round or another were scored differently against Bronx favorite Roland LaStarza in 1950. Marciano took a questionable 10-round decision from LaStarza at Madison Square Garden. Three years later at the Polo Grounds, Marciano successfully defended his world title, knocking out LaStarza in the 11th round of their 1953 Fight of the Year.
A pair of Hall of Fame heavyweights from Brooklyn, Floyd Patterson and “Iron” Mike Tyson, respectively, knocked out Boston’s Tom McNeeley and his son, Peter McNeeley. McNeeley dropped Patterson once but he hit the deck 11 times before finally succumbing in the fourth round of their 1961 title fight in Toronto. His son, Peter, lost by first-round disqualification to Tyson who was fighting for the first since being released from prison.
A fireman from Boston with brittle hands, Paul Pender, twice defeated arguably the consensus Greatest of All-time, Harlem’s “Sugar” Ray Robinson, not once but twice by 15-round split decisions in 1960 world middleweight title fights at the Boston Garden.
“Marvelous” Marvin Hagler, a transplanted New Jersey fighter who lived in Marciano’s hometown of Brockton, Mass., felt ripped off when he was given a draw in his first world title fight against Brooklyn’s defending champion Vito Antuofermo in Las Vegas. Two years later in 1981, Hagler captured the coveted crown at the Boston Garden as Antuofermo retired after four rounds.
Even Lowell’s “Irish” Micky Ward had a New York City rival in Brooklyn’s Zab Judah, who he dropped a hard-fought 12-round decision to in 1998. For many years Judah said Ward was the toughest opponent he ever fought.
More recently, Irish Olympian Kevin McBride, fighting out of the Dorchester section of Boston, ended Tyson’s career in 2005 with a sixth-round TKO victory that left the boxing world in shock, and Boston heavyweight John Ruiz – the only Latino heavyweight champion of the world - won a 2008 fight in Mexico against Harlem’s Jameel McCline by 12-round decision in a world title eliminator.
On October 10, O’Connor, Bracero, Kielczweski and Vazquez will have their opportunity to not only represent their hometowns, but to etch themselves into the annals of the rivalry.

(October 1, 2015) – Forty-two years after he captured his first National Golden Gloves Tournament title at Lowell Memorial Auditorium, Hall-of-Famer Sugar Ray Leonard returns Saturday, October 10 to the same historic building as a television analyst for Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBCSN, promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Murphys Boxing, airing live from Lowell, Massachusetts.
PBC on NBCSN is headlined by a 10-round rematch between Framingham (MA) welterweight Danny “Bhoy” O’Connor (26-2, 10 KOs), who is fighting to avenge his 2011 loss to Brooklyn welterweight Gabriel “Tito” Bracero (23-2, 4 KOs). O’Connor and Leonard are two of only four people to ever win the National Golden Gloves and National Amateur Championship in the same year. O’Connor collected both accolades in 2008.
Leonard captured top honors in the lightweight division (132 pounds) of the 1973 National Golden Gloves Tournament, outpointing Hilmer Kenty in the championship final at Lowell Memorial Auditorium. Leonard won the National Golden Gloves Tournament at light welterweight title the following year, while seven years later Kenty became the first professional world champion from Emanuel Steward’s soon-to-become legendary Kronk Gym in Detroit.
“One of the most precious moments of my career happened in Lowell, Massachusetts,” Leonard recently said about his aforementioned experience. “It was priceless.”
In addition to Leonard and Kenty, five other future world champions – Marvin Hagler, Aaron Pryor, Art Frias, Leon and Michael Spinks – competed in the 1973 National Golden Gloves Tournament. Leonard, Hagler, Pryor and Michael Spinks are International Boxing Hall of Fame inductees.
Leonard has another tie to Lowell, the fourth-largest city in Massachusetts. In 1978, he won a 10-round decision over Dicky Eklund at Hynes Auditorium in Boston. Eklund was the head trainer of his half-brother, “The Pride of Lowell” and three-time “Fight of the Year” participant “Irish” Micky Ward, who celebrates his 50th birthday this coming October 4.

QUINCY, MASS- It was an explosive night of old school boxing on Saturday June 27th as Murphys Boxing, in association with Vincent Traietti, hosted another great night of fights at the Marina Bay Sportsplex in Quincy. Chris Traietti also of Quincy, Massachusetts closed out the night as the main event in his hometown against Jose Corral. Chris dominated the fight from the outset and seemed to land every punch he threw against the over matched Corral. Corral was game as he took every punch Traietti landed, but in the sixth round with Traietti continuously landing both devastating body and head shots, the ref had seen enough and stepped in to call and end to the fight in the 6th round, saving Corral from any further damage. With Traietti’s record now moving to (18-3 14KOs), he looks next to a fight that will put him in the top 10 Cruiserweight rankings.
In the Co Main Event, Murphys Boxing fan favorite Aleksandra Lopes won a unanimous 6 round decision against Althea Saunders in a rematch from a fight that took place almost exactly one year ago. Aleksandra used her jab and long reach to keep Saunders on the outside as she piled up the points landing her over hand right. With the win Aleksandra avenged her draw with Saunders from last year and has once again positioned herself to challenge for a World Title.
In the other Co Main Event, Murphys Boxing’s very own Michael McLaughlin faced off against Veteran Roberto Valenzuela in a six round Welterweight bout. McLaughlin looked as good as he ever has in dominating the tough Valenzuela. McLaughlin moved with intensity as he kept getting on the inside of Valenzuela, while landing three and four punch combinations. McLaughlin continued to trap Valenzuela on the ropes, while he landed the head, body, head combinations much to the delight of his overwhelming crowd. The fight was stopped after the 4th round due to an accidental cut below Valenzuela’s right eye and with McLaughlin leading on all judges scorecards by 40-36 margin, McLaughlin was awarded the unanimous shutout victory. The win lifts McLaughlin to (11-1-1) and Murphys Boxing now looks to land him a Irish Welterweight Title fight by years end.
In a preliminary bout, Niall Kennedy (2-0 1KO) made his long anticipated USA debut against Alando Pugh in a four round heavyweight bout. Niall who trains at the Celtic Warriors Gym in Ireland, which is run by Packie Collins and is also the training ground for Murphys Boxing’s Gary “Spike” O’ Sullivan, dominated Pugh from the opening bell, landing big overhand thudding rights. Niall started the first round showing the punching power that has all of Ireland talking, and kept it up in the second round when he hit Alando with a right to the head that sent him straight to the canvas at 1:27 of the round. With the crowd cheering wildly, Niall stood and watched as his opponent struggled to get to his knees as the ref counted him out. This was a dominate performance by the Irish Heavyweight, who instantly endeared himself to his new Murphys Boxing legion of fans.
In the two other preliminary bouts of the evening, Matt Doherty returned to fight on another Murphys Boxing card stopping opponent Brandon Garvin in 1:57 of the 1st round, while Greg Thomas beat Lionel Young by a four round split decision in an action packed Super Middleweight bout.
It was another great night of old school boxing at its finest, and the usual raucous Murphys Boxing crowd was in full effect. BOSTON (May 23, 2015) - James DeGale (21-1, 14 KOs) narrowly defeated Andre Dirrell (24-2, 16 KOs) Saturday afternoon on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC from Agganis Arena in Boston to earn the super middleweight world title.
Degale had Dirrell in trouble early knocking him down twice in the second round to open up a lead on the scorecards. Dirrell fought back strongly throughout the rest of the fight by using his jab and a series of combinations to occasionally stun DeGale, but was unable to make up the gap on the scorecards. The judges' scores were 114-112 twice and 117-109.
Worcester's Edwin Rodriguez (27-1, 18 KOs) impressed the crowd at Agganis Arena with a dominant third round stoppage over the previously undefeated Craig Baker (16-1, 12 KOs). The ref stopped the fight at 2:22 into the third round because of unanswered strikes to the head.
Another local favorite, Framingham's Danny O'Connor (26-2, 10 KOs) was determined to put on a show close to home and he delivered in a big way, stopping Chris Gilbert (13-2, 10 KOs) in the fifth round. O'Connor knocked Gilbert down in rounds two and three before getting the stoppage in round five.

"I am speechless. In my whole career, what I have been building up to is winning a world title and I have finally done it. It is an unbelievable feeling. I have made history; I am the first British Olympic Gold medalist to become a world champion.
"I am back now and injury free. I will take on any super middleweight in the world. There is no other super middleweight in the world who will beat me. I am hard to beat when I am at my best.
"Let's not forget Dirrell is a very good opponent who is very, very talented and hard to beat.
"I am super fit, feeling good and I am ready. I am a world champion."
ANDRE DIRRELL
"They said I ran from Carl Froch and they took that fight from me. He ran tonight and they gave it to him.
"All he did was run, no way I lost this fight."
EDWIN RODRIGUEZ
"I imposed my will and took him out. I was hitting him with some hard rights and it was only a matter of time.
"I hit him with a lot of clean rights but I really wanted to knock him down.
"I'm ready for a title fight now, but maybe it will take one more fight. That's up to my team."
CRAIG BAKER
"I felt like it was stopped too soon but it's done now and all I can do is go back to the gym and work harder and come back stronger next time.
"I commend Edwin and today I guess the better man won.
"My activity level wasn't high enough that's all.
"I'm a champion either way it goes, it's time to get back in the gym."
DANNY O'CONNOR
"The game plan was to be intelligent and use my skills. We didn't think he was as skillful and I didn't want to fight down to him. Luckily the body shots really affected him.
"As soon as Paulie Malignaggi got injured I turned my focus towards this fight. That's all I thought about. I still want to fight Paulie."
CHRIS GILBERT
"Danny O'Connor is a slick well rounded fighter. He just caught me with a great shot. I really appreciate the experience of fighting on this card but I feel like I have more to give.
"To improve on my performance in the future I just need more experience, I'll be back.

BOSTON (May 21, 2015) - Fighters participating on Saturday's Premier Boxing Champions onNBC card took part in the final press conference today at historic Fenway Park in Boston before their respective fights at Agganis Arena, with televised coverage starting at 4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT.
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Murphys Boxing, are priced at $250, $200, $100, $75, $50 and $35, not including applicable service charges and taxes, and are on sale now.
Here are what the press conference participants had to say:
ANDRE DIRRELL
"A title means everything. It completes you as a fighter. That's the top of the food chain in this sport, and that's the pedestal we're all trying to reach - world champion. Everybody wants to be a world champion. The greats had it and now we want it. It would mean more for my city, my family and my friends, and it's something I'll always be able to look back it. It would put me in the record books for life.
"DeGale is not quiet. Today he's chilling, maybe because he's a little out of his comfort zone. But there's a lot of tension when you're standing right there next to your opponent. He might just be a little cranky today.
"I like to lighten the mood and stay comfortable. This is all a part of the game. Let's have fun now. It's ass-kicking time when we get in that ring, but outside it's all love.
"There was a time when I didn't want to do interviews. I didn't want to go to fights. I didn't want to hear fans online and on social media. I closed all them down because I didn't want to hear people ask, 'When are you fighting again? Talking about talent wasted, or saying I'm glad he's gone.' It hurt because there was nothing I could do. I was powerless even with all the power in the world."
JAMES DEGALE
"Andre says the belt doesn't mean anything to him in the fight - well, the belt means everything to me and more. I am here to make history and it doesn't happen without that title.
"I could win on Saturday night and retire a happy man - that's how much I want to beat Andre Dirrell. But when I do win that title, I am going for the rest of the belts, creating a lasting legacy for my country, my fans and myself.
"Andre is a classy fighter and he showed in the press conference that he is a classy guy too - when two fighters who believe in their ability 100 percent and know they are going to win a fight, it is going to be explosive.
"There's nothing but respect between us, but ultimately, we're going to take each other to dark territory on Saturday night, it's going to be a brutal battle - and one that I am going to win."
EDWIN RODRIGUEZ
"This is home for me and I'm thrilled. I know I have a good undefeated fighter in front me, so I'm looking forward to a competitive matchup. It's going to be a great fight for the fans.
"This is an exciting day for me. I saw Pedro Martinez pitch so many times here at Fenway and he's going into the Hall of Fame. Also, my fellow countrymen Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz have made so much history here.
"Being here today and then having the weigh-in at Faneuil Hall tomorrow and fighting on Saturday, it's just an amazing experience.
CRAIG BAKER
"This is a great opportunity for me. I've dreamed of fighting on a grand scale like this since I first started boxing.

"A couple of years ago Ken Casey and I talked about bringing boxing back to the city of Boston. Fast-forward to today and we're doing it.

"I'm an aggressive come forward, in your face boxer from the first bell to the last.
"I was full steam ahead when I got the call for this fight. I train all the time, I don't take breaks and I'm always looking for an opportunity. I couldn't be happier.
